I'm a tourism entrepreneur and a peacebuilder,

but this is not how I started.

When I was seven years old, I remember watching television

and seeing people throwing rocks,

and thinking, this must be a fun thing to do.

So I got out to the street and threw rocks,

not realizing I was supposed to throw rocks at Israeli cars.

Instead, I ended up stoning my neighbors' cars. (Laughter)

They were not enthusiastic about my patriotism.

This is me, the little one, and I know what you're thinking:

But my brother, who is older than me,

was arrested when he was 18,

18살때 체포되었고

taken to prison on charges of throwing stones.

돌을 던진 혐의로 감옥에 들어갔어요.

He was beaten up when he refused to confess that he threw stones,

형은 돌을 던졌다는 것을 부인했을 때 두들겨 맞았죠.

and as a result, had internal injuries

그 결과 내상을 입었고

that caused his death soon after he was released from prison.

감옥에서 풀려난 직후 죽었습니다.

I was angry, I was bitter,

저는 화가 났고 비통해 했고

and all I wanted was revenge.

복수를 하고 싶었어요.

But that changed when I was 18.

그러나 제가 18살이 되었을때 변화가 있었어요.

I decided that I needed Hebrew to get a job,

저는 직업을 구하기 위해 히브리어가 필요하다고 생각했고

and going to study Hebrew in that classroom

히브리어를 배우기 위해 수업에 갔는데

was the first time I ever met Jews who were not soldiers.

그 것이 제가 처음으로 군인이 아닌 유대인을 만난 것이었죠.

And we connected over really small things, like the fact that I love country music,

제가 컨트리 음악을 좋아하는 것과 같은 매우 작은 것에도 우리는 연결되었어요.

which is really strange for Palestinians.

컨트리 뮤직은 팔레스타인에게는 매우 드문 거죠.

But it was then that I realized also that we have a wall of anger,

of hatred and of ignorance that separates us.

I decided that it doesn't matter what happens to me.

What really matters is how I deal with it.

And therefore, I decided to dedicate my life

to bringing down the walls that separate people.

I do so through many ways.

그리고 여러가지 방법을 통해 그 일을 합니다.

Tourism is one of them, but also media and education,

미디어나 교육뿐 아니라 관광은 그 것들중 하나죠.

and you might be wondering, really, can tourism change things?

여러분이 관광이 그 것들을 바꿀 수 있나 궁금해 하시겠죠.

Can it bring down walls? Yes.

관광이 장벽을 허물수 있을까요? 네.

Tourism is the best sustainable way to bring down those walls

관광은 장벽을 허물기 위해

사람들을 연결하고 관계를 만들기위해 지속가능한 방법을 만들기위한

and to create a sustainable way of connecting with each other

and creating friendships.

In 2009, I cofounded Mejdi Tours,

2009년에 저는 메즈디 투어를 공동설립했습니다.

a social enterprise that aims to connect people,

사람들을 연결시키는 사회적 기업입니다.

with two Jewish friends, by the way,

두명의 유대인을 통해서요.

and what we'll do, the model we did,

우리가 하는 것, 우리가 하는 모델은

for example, in Jerusalem, we would have two tour guides,

one Israeli and one Palestinian, guiding the trips together,

한명은 이스라엘, 한명은 팔레스타인 사람이 동시에 여행 가이드를 하고

telling history and narrative and archaeology and conflict

전혀 다른 관점에서 역사, 이야기, 고고학, 분쟁에 관해 말해 줍니다.

from totally different perspectives.

I remember running a trip together with a friend named Kobi --

저는 코비라는 이름의 친구와 함께 여행을 했던 것이 기억나네요.

Jewish congregation from Chicago, the trip was in Jerusalem --

시카고에서온 유대 신자인데 그 여행은 예루살렘에서 있었죠.

and we took them to a refugee camp, a Palestinian refugee camp,

우리는 그들을 데리고 난민촌, 팔레스타인 난민촌을 갔고

and there we had this amazing food.

그곳에서 우리는 이 굉장한 음식을 먹었습니다.

By the way, this is my mother. She's cool.

참고로 이분은 저의 어머니입니다. 멋진 분이죠.

And that's the Palestinian food called maqluba.

그리고 그것은 마크루배라고 불리는 팔레스타인 음식입니다.

It means "upside-down."

"거꾸로"라는 의미입니다.

You cook it with rice and chicken, and you flip it upside-down.

밥과 치킨을 가지고 요리하고 이것을 위아래로 뒤집어요.

It's the best meal ever.

정말 최고의 음식이죠.

And we'll eat together.

우리는 같이 멋을 것입니다.

Then we had a joint band, Israeli and Palestinian musicians,

그런다음 우리는 이스라엘과 팔레스타인의 합동밴드를 가졌고

and we did some belly-dancing.

벨리댄스를 추었죠.

If you don't know any, I'll teach you later.

But when we left, both sides,

they were crying because they did not want to leave.

Three years later, those relationships still exist.

Imagine with me if the one billion people

who travel internationally every year travel like this,

not being taken in the bus from one side to another,

다른 곳을 가는 것이 아니라

from one hotel to another,

이처럼 국제여행을 하는 1억명의 사람들이

taking pictures from the windows of their buses of people and cultures,

단순히 버스 창문에서 사람들과 문화를 사진찍는 것이 아니라

but actually connecting with people.

실제로 사람들과 소통하는 것이죠.

You know, I remember having a Muslim group from the U.K.

저는 영국에서온 이슬람교 그룹을 기억하는데

going to the house of an Orthodox Jewish family,

전통 유대인 가족의 집을 방문해

and having their first Friday night dinners, that Sabbath dinner,

안식일 저녁인, 첫번째 금요일 저녁을 하고

and eating together hamin, which is a Jewish food, a stew,

유대인 음식(스튜)인 하민을 같이 먹고

just having the connection of realizing, after a while,

잠시후에, 수백년전 그들의 가족들이

that a hundred years ago, their families came out

북아프리카의 같은 곳에서 왔다는 사실의

of the same place in Northern Africa.

깨달음의 연결을 가집니다.
