but this is not how I started.

When I was seven years old, I remember watching television

کاتێک ٧ ساڵ بووم، لەیادمە سەیری تەلەفیزیۆنم دەکرد

and seeing people throwing rocks,

،خەڵکم دەبینی بەرد فڕێدەدەن

and thinking, this must be a fun thing to do.

.پێموابوو ڕەنگە ئەمە شتێکی خۆشبێت

So I got out to the street and threw rocks,

،بۆیە چوومە سەر شەقامەکە و بەردم فڕێدا

not realizing I was supposed to throw rocks at Israeli cars.

نەمدەزانی دەبێت بەرد بگرمە .ئوتومبیلی ئیسرائیلییەکان

Instead, I ended up stoning my neighbors' cars. (Laughter)

لەبری ئەوە بەردم گرتە ئوتومبیلی (دراوسێکەمان (پێکەنین

They were not enthusiastic about my patriotism.

.بەم کارە شۆڕشگێرانەیەم دڵخۆش نەبوون

This is my picture with my brother.

.ئەمە وێنەی من و براکەمە

This is me, the little one, and I know what you're thinking:

بچوکەکەیان منم :دەزانم ڕەنگە بیر بکەنەوە

"You used to look cute, what the heck happened to you?"

"تۆ زۆر جوان بوویت، چیت بەسەر هاتووە؟"

But my brother, who is older than me,

،براکەم کە لە من گەورەتر بوو

was arrested when he was 18,

،لە ١٨ ساڵیدا دەستگیر کرا

taken to prison on charges of throwing stones.

.بە تۆمەتی بەردفڕێدان تاوانبار کرا

He was beaten up when he refused to confess that he threw stones,

،کاتێک دانی پێدا نەنا، ئەشکەنجە درا

and as a result, had internal injuries

لە کۆتاییدا توشی خوێن بەربوون بوو

that caused his death soon after he was released from prison.

.و بووە هۆی مردنی لەدوای ئازادکردنی

I was angry, I was bitter,

،توڕە و ڕق ئەستورتر بووم

and all I wanted was revenge.

.تەنها دەمویست تۆڵە بستێنمەوە

But that changed when I was 18.

بەڵام کە بووم بە ١٨ساڵ ئەم .بیرکردنەوەیەم گۆڕا

I decided that I needed Hebrew to get a job,

،دەبوو فێری عیبری ببم تا کارم دەست بکەوێت

and going to study Hebrew in that classroom

لە کڵاسی فێربونی عیبریدا، بۆ یەکەم جار

was the first time I ever met Jews who were not soldiers.

.کۆمەڵێک جولەکەم بینی کە سەرباز نەبووبن

And we connected over really small things, like the fact that I love country music,

بە هۆی چەند شتێکەوە پەیوەندیمان دروستکرد ،وەک خۆشەویستی بۆ موزیکی فۆلکلۆری ئەمەریکی

which is really strange for Palestinians.

کە زۆر نامۆیە بۆ فەڵەستینییەکان

But it was then that I realized also that we have a wall of anger,

ئەوکات زانیم، ئێمە دیواری ، توڕەی لە نێوانماندایە

of hatred and of ignorance that separates us.

.لە ڕق و نەزانی، کە جیامان دەکاتەوە

I decided that it doesn't matter what happens to me.

.ئەوکات بڕیارم دا، گرنگ نییە چیم بەسەر دێت

What really matters is how I deal with it.

.گرنگ ئەوەیە چۆن مامەڵەی لەگەڵ دەکەم

And therefore, I decided to dedicate my life

بۆیە بڕیارم دا، ژیانم تەرخان بکەم

to bringing down the walls that separate people.

بۆ ڕوخاندنی ئەو دیوارانەی .خەڵکی جیادەکەنەوە

I do so through many ways.

.بە چەند شێوەیەک ئەوە دەکەم

Tourism is one of them, but also media and education,

ئەوانیش گەشتیاری و میدیا و پەروەردەن

and you might be wondering, really, can tourism change things?

:ڕەنگە بپرسن گەشتوگوزار دەتوانێت هیچ بگۆڕێت؟

Can it bring down walls? Yes.

.دەتوانێت دیوارەکان بڕوخێنێت؟ بەڵێ

Tourism is the best sustainable way to bring down those walls

گەشتیاری باشترین شێوەیە بۆ ڕوخانی ئەو دیوارانە و

and to create a sustainable way of connecting with each other

دابینکردنی ڕێگەچارەیەک بۆ دروستکردنی پەیوەندی لە نێوانماندا

and creating friendships.

In 2009, I cofounded Mejdi Tours,

،لە ٢٠٠٩ دا، مەجدی گەشتیاریم دامەزراند

a social enterprise that aims to connect people,

پڕۆژەیەکی کۆمەڵایەتییە بۆ ،ئاشناکردنی خەڵکی بە یەکدی

with two Jewish friends, by the way,

and what we'll do, the model we did,

for example, in Jerusalem, we would have two tour guides,

بۆ نمونە لە قودس ،دوو ڕێبەر لەگەڵیان دەڕۆین

one Israeli and one Palestinian, guiding the trips together,

ئیسرائیلییەک و فەڵەستینییەک پێکەوە ڕێنیشاندەری گەشتیارەکان دەکەن،

telling history and narrative and archaeology and conflict

باسی مێژوو و چیرۆک و ئارکیۆلۆژی و ململانێکانیان بۆ دەکەین

from totally different perspectives.

.لە دوو دیدی تەواو جیاوازەوە

I remember running a trip together with a friend named Kobi --

لەیادمە گەشتێکم بەڕێوەر دەبرد لەگەڵ هاوڕێیەکم بە ناوی کۆبی

Jewish congregation from Chicago, the trip was in Jerusalem --

کۆمەڵێک جولەکە بوون لە شیکاکۆوە دەچوون بۆ قودس

and we took them to a refugee camp, a Palestinian refugee camp,

،بردمانن بۆ کەمپێکی ئاوارە فەڵەستینییەکان

and there we had this amazing food.

.ئەم خواردنە خۆشەمان خوارد

By the way, this is my mother. She's cool.

.ئەمە دایکمە، زۆر میهرەبانە

And that's the Palestinian food called maqluba.

ئەوە خواردنێکی فەڵەستینییە .پێی دەگوترێت مەقلوبە

It means "upside-down."

واتە هەڵاوگێڕاو

You cook it with rice and chicken, and you flip it upside-down.

برنج و مریشک لێدەنێیت و دواتر سەرەوخواری دەکەیتەوە

It's the best meal ever.

.خۆشترین ژەمە خۆراکە

And we'll eat together.

.دواتر پێکەوە نانمان خوارد

Then we had a joint band, Israeli and Palestinian musicians,

دواتر چووین بۆ لای باندێکی میوزیکی ،فەڵەستینی و ئیسرائیلی

and we did some belly-dancing.

پاشان سەمامان کرد

If you don't know any, I'll teach you later.

.گەر نازانن چۆنە دواتر فێرتان دەکەم

But when we left, both sides,

،کاتێک ڕۆشتین، هەردوولا

they were crying because they did not want to leave.

.دەگریان، چونکە نەیاندەویست بڕۆن

Three years later, those relationships still exist.

سێ ساڵ تێپەڕیوە و ئەو پەیوەندییەیان .هێشتا بەردەوامە

Imagine with me if the one billion people

بیهێننە پێش چاوی خۆتان ئەگەر یەک مليار خەڵک

who travel internationally every year travel like this,

،کە ساڵانە لە دونیاندا بەم جۆرە گەشت دەکەن

not being taken in the bus from one side to another,

تەنها بە پاس ئەم شوێن و ئەو ،شوێنیان پێنەکرێت

from one hotel to another,

،لەم ئوتێل بۆ ئەو ئوتێل

taking pictures from the windows of their buses of people and cultures,

لە پاسەکانیانەوە فۆتۆی خەڵک و ،کلتوری ئەو وڵاتە نەگرن

but actually connecting with people.

بەڵکو بە ڕاستی لەگەڵ ئەو .خەڵکە پەیوەندی دروست بکەن

You know, I remember having a Muslim group from the U.K.

بیرمە گروپێکی موسوڵمان .لە بریتانیاوە هاتن

going to the house of an Orthodox Jewish family,

،چوین بۆ خانوی خیزانێکی جولەکەی ئەرتەدۆکسی

and having their first Friday night dinners, that Sabbath dinner,

یەکەم خواردنی شەوی هەینی لەوێ ،لەگەڵ ئەو خیزانە جولەکەیە

and eating together hamin, which is a Jewish food, a stew,

هامین)مان خوارد، کە خواردنێکی جولەکەکانە)

just having the connection of realizing, after a while,

دوای قسەکردن و پەیوەندیکردنی پیکەوە ،دواتر درکیان بەوە کرد

that a hundred years ago, their families came out

سەدەها ساڵ پێشتر خێزانەکانی هەردووکیان

of the same place in Northern Africa.

.لە یەک شوێنی باکوری ئەفریقاوە هاتوون

This is not disaster tourism.

.ئەمە گەشتێکی شکستخواردوو نییە

This is the future of travel,

،ئەمە داهاتووی گەشتکردنە

and I invite you to join me to do that, to change your travel.

بانگێشتتان دەکەم تا لەگەڵم .بێن تا گەشتەکانتان بگۆڕم

We're doing it all over the world now,

،ئێستا لە هەموو جیهاندا ئەمە دەکەین

from Ireland to Iran to Turkey,

،لە ئەیرلەنداوە بۆ ئێران بۆ تورکیا

and we see ourselves going everywhere to change the world.

خۆمان دەبینین کە دەچینە هەموو شوێنێک .بۆ گۆڕینی جیهان
