We're going to go on a dive to the deep sea,

بە نیازین کە گەشتێک بکەین بەناو دەریا قوڵەکاندا

and anyone that's had that lovely opportunity

هەرکەسێک کە پێشتر ئەو دەرفەتە زێڕینەی هەبووبێت، ئەوە دەزانێت کە

knows that for about two and half hours on the way down,

نزیکەی دوو کاتژمێر و نیو دەخایەنێت تاوەکو بچنە قوڵایی-ەوە

it's a perfectly positively pitch-black world.

بەتەواوەتی دڵخۆشکەرە بۆ ئەم جیهانە ڕەشە

And we used to see the most mysterious animals out the window

وە دەتوانین زۆربەی ئاژەڵە ئاڵۆز و نادیارەکان لە دەرەوە ببینین

that you couldn't describe:

کە ئێوە ناتوانن وەسفیان بکەن: ئەم ڕوناکیە ئاڵۆزانە

these blinking lights -- a world of bioluminescence, like fireflies.

جیهانێکی ساردی تیشکاویە. وەک مەشخەڵە ئاگرینەکانە

دکتۆر ئیدث ویدەر..کە ئێستا لە دامەزراوەی پاراستن و لێکۆڵینەوەی دەریاییە

Dr. Edith Widder -- she's now at the Ocean Research and Conservation Association --

توانی خۆی و کامێراکەی بێت و

was able to come up with a camera

وێنەی هەندێک لە و زیندەوەرە سەیروسەمەرانە بگرێت

that could capture some of these incredible animals,

وەک ئەوانەی دەیانبینن لەسەر شاشەکە

and that's what you're seeing here on the screen.

That's all bioluminescence. Like I said: just like fireflies.

ئەمانە هەموویان تیشکدەرەوەکانن.. وەک پێشتر وتم.. هەروەک یاری ئاگرینەکان وان

ئەوە قەلێکە لە ژێر دارێکدا، پێکەنین

There's a flying turkey under a tree.

(Laughter)

وەک دەزانن من زەوی ناسم. بەڵام ئاشقی ئەوەم

I'm a geologist by training.

But I love that.

And you see, some of the bioluminescence they use to avoid being eaten,

وەک دەبینن ئەمانە زیندەوەری تیشکدەرن

دەبێت خۆتان بە دوور بگرن لە خواردنیان

some they use to attract prey,

وە هەندێکیان وەک نێچیرێکی سەرنج ڕاکێش ڕاو دەکرێن

but all of it, from an artistic point of view,

بەڵام لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا هەموویان دیمەنێکی سەرنج ڕاکێشیان دروست کردوە

is just positively amazing.

And a lot of what goes on inside --

شتی زۆر ڕوودەدات لە ناوەوە

There's a fish with glowing eyes, pulsating eyes.

لەوێدا ماسیەکی لێیە چاوەکانی دەدروەشێتەوە

Some of the colors are designed to hypnotize,

دیزاینی ڕەنگەکانی وەک خەواندنی موگناتیسی وایە

these lovely patterns.

زۆر جوان و خۆشەویستن. ئەمەی دواهەمینیشیان

And then this last one,

one of my favorites, this pinwheel design.

پەسەندترینیانە لای من. ئەمە دیزایینەکەی وەک دەمبوس وایە

Just absolutely amazing, every single dive.

لەگەڵ هەموو خۆنقوم کردنێکی دا بەتەواوەتی سەرنج ڕاکێش دەبێت

That's the unknown world, and today we've only explored

ئەوە جیهانێکی نەزانراوە، لە ئەمڕۆدا ئێمە تەنها لە سەدا ٣ ی ئەو جیهانەمان دۆزیوەتەوە

about 3 percent of what's out there in the ocean.

کە لە زەریاکاندا بونیان هەیە

Already we've found the world's highest mountains,

وە بەرزترین شاخەکانمان دۆزیوەتەوە

وە نزمترین دۆڵەکانی جیهان

the world's deepest valleys,

underwater lakes, underwater waterfalls --

دەریاچە و تافگەکانی ژێر ئاو

a lot of that we shared with you from the stage.

وە زۆر شتی تر کە ئێستا کە لەسەر ئەم شانۆیە نیشانی ئێوە دەدرێت

And in a place where we thought no life at all,

وە شوێنێک کە هەرگیز ئێمە بە بیرماندا نەهاتووە کە ژیانی تێدا بێت

we find more life, we think, and diversity and density

ژیانی زیاتر دەدۆزینەوە، بیرکردنەوەمان، لەگەڵ دەرئەنجام و چارەنوسەکان

than the tropical rainforest,

دارستانەکانی هێڵی یەکسانی ئەوەمان پێدەڵێن

which tells us that we don't know much about this planet at all.

کە ئێمە زۆر دەربارەی هەسارەکەمان نازانین

هێشتا ٪٩٧ ی شتەکان شاراوەن و پڕن لە شتی سەیر و سەمەرە

There's still 97 percent,

and either that 97 percent is empty or just full of surprises.

But I want to jump up to shallow water now

بەڵام ئێستا دەمەوێت باز بدەین و بچینە ئاوێکی تەنکەوە

and look at some creatures that are positively amazing.

سەیری هەندێک لەو زیندەوەرە سەیرانە بکەین

Cephalopods -- head-foots.

سیپالۆپۆدس، سەر-قاچ، کە بە منداڵی پێم دەگوتن کالاماری . (پێکەنین)

As a kid I knew them as calamari, mostly.

(Laughter)

ئەمە ئەختەبوتە

This is an octopus.

This is the work of Dr. Roger Hanlon at the Marine Biological Lab,

دکتۆر ڕۆجەر هانلۆن ئیشی لەسەر دەکات لە تاقیگەی بایۆلۆجی دەریایی

سەیرکەن چۆن سیپالۆپۆدس دەتوانێت بەشێوەیەکی سەرنجڕاکێش

and it's just fascinating how cephalopods can,

with their incredible eyes, sense their surroundings,

بەهۆی چاوە زۆر جوان و سەرنجڕاکێشەکانی، هەست بکات بە دەوروبەری

look at light, look at patterns.

سەیری ڕووناکیەکەی بکەن، سەیری شێوازەکانی بکەن

Here's an octopus moving across the reef,

لەوێدا ئەختەبوتێکی لێیە کە بەناو مەرجانەکاندا دەڕوات

finds a spot to settle down, curls up and then disappears into the background.

کونێک دەدۆزێتەوە بۆ ئەوەی تیێدا پشوو بدات،خۆی لول دەکات و خۆی تێدا دەشارێەتەوە

Tough thing to do.

ئەمە شتێکی گرانە

In the next bit, we're going to see a couple squid.

لە ماوەیەکی کورتدا، دوو ئاژەڵی دەریایی دەبینین

Now males, when they fight,

ئەمانە زیندەوەرەکانن. کاتێک نێرینەکان شەڕدەکەن

if they're really aggressive, they turn white.

ئەگەر ئەوان بەڕاستی شەڕ بکەن. ڕەنگیان دەگۆڕێت بۆ سپی

ئەم دوو نێرینەیە شەڕ دەکەن

And these two males are fighting.

They do it by bouncing their butts together,

زۆر بەجۆش و خرۆشەوە هێرش دەکەنە سەریەکترو

شتێکی زۆر خۆش ڕوودەدات. ئێستا، نێرینەیەک لە لای چەپەوەیە

which is an interesting concept.

Now, here's a male on the left and a female on the right,

وە مێینەیەک لەلای ڕاستە

and the male has managed to split his coloration

نێرینەکە ڕەنگی خۆی جیادەکاتەوەو ڕێکی دەخات

so the female only always sees the kinder, gentler squid in him.

بۆ ئەوەی وەک زیندەوەرێکی میهرەبان دەربکەوێت و سەرنجی مێینەکە ڕابکێشێت بە لای خۆیدا

وە نێرینەکە...(پێکەنین) با جارێکی تر ئەمە ببینینەوە

(Laughter)

Let's take a look at it again. Watch the coloration:

با جارێکی تر سەیری بکەینەوە. سەیری ڕەنگەکە بکەن

white on the right, brown on the left.

سپی لەلای ڕاستەوەیە، ڕەنگ قاوەییەکیش لەلای چەپەوەیە

He takes a step back,

نێرینەکە هەنگاوێک دەڕواتە دواوە.. بۆ ئەوەی خۆی بپارێزێت لە نێرینەکانی تر

he's keeping off the other males by splitting his body,

بە جیاکردنەوەی لاشەی.. وە هاتنی بۆ لایەکی تر

and comes up on the other side --

Bingo!

ئەڵێی قومارە دەکەن! ئەوەی ئێستا پێم وتن

Now, I'm told that's not not just a squid phenomenon with males,

ئەم دیاردەیەتەنها تایبەت نیە بە زیندەوەرە نێرینە دەریاییەکانەوە، بەڵام نازانم

but I don't know.

(پێکەنین)

(Laughter)

Cuttlefish. I love cuttlefish.

کاتڵفیش. من کاتڵفیشم خۆش دەوێت. ئەمە زیندەوەرێکی دەریایی گەورەی ئوستوڕاڵییە

This is a Giant Australian Cuttlefish.

And there he is, his droopy little eyes up here.

ئەوەتا لەوێدایە، چاوەکانی کەمێک لە سەرەوە شۆڕبۆتەوە

بەڵام دەتوانن شێوەیەکی سەرنجڕاکێشیان هەبێت

But they can do pretty amazing things, too.

لێرەدا دەتوانین ئەو دانەیە ببینین کە گەڕایەوە لەو کونە

Here we're going to see one backing into a crevice,

and watch his tentacles --

سەیری قۆچە هەستیارەکانی بکەن

he just pulls them in, makes them look just like algae.

ڕایان دەکێشێت بە لای خۆیدا، شێوەی قەوزە وەردەگرن

Disappears right into the background.

بە خێرایی خۆی ون دەکات

Positively amazing.

زۆر سەرنجڕاکێشە. لێرەدا دوو نێرینە شەڕدەکەن

Here's two males fighting.

جارێکی تر، بەتەواوەتی زیرەکن، ئەمانە سیپالۆپۆدسن

Once again, they're smart enough, these cephalopods;

they know not to hurt each other.

دەزانن کە ئازاری یەکتری نادەن

But look at the patterns that they can do with their skin.

بە ڵام سەیری شێوازەکانیان بکە و چی لە پێستیان دەکەن

That's an amazing thing.

ئەوە شتێکی تەواو سەرنجڕاکێشە

لێرەدا ئەختەبوتێکی لێیە. هەندێک جار کە دەجوڵێن نایانەوێت دەربکەون

Here's an octopus.

Sometimes they don't want to be seen when they move,

لەبەرئەوەی چەتەکان دەیان بینن

because predators can see them.

لە ڕاستیدا ئەم برادەرە دەتونێت وەک بەردێک خۆی نیشان بدات

This guy can make himself look like a rock,

سەیری ژینگەی ئەو بکەن

and, looking at his environment,

دەتوانێت خۆی بخزێنێتە نزماییەکان

can actually slide across the bottom,

بە بەکارهێنانی شەپۆلەکان و سێبەرەکان ناتوانرێت ئەو ببینرێت

using the waves and the shadows so he can't be seen.

بە هۆی جوڵەی گونجاوەوە دەتوانیت خۆی بشارێتەوە

His motion blends right into the background --

the moving rock trick.

وەک بەردێکی جوڵاو. کەواتە. زۆر شت لە تەنکاوەکانەوە فێر دەبین

So, we're learning lots new from the shallow water.

Still exploring the deep, but learning lots from the shallow water.

هێشتا لێکۆڵینەوە ماوە لە قوڵاییەکان

بەڵام زۆر شتیش فێر بوین لە تەنکاوەکانەوە

There's a good reason why:

هۆکارێکی باش هەیە کە بۆچی تەنکاوەکان

the shallow water's full of predators -- here's a barracuda --

پڕبن لە چەتەکان.. ئەوە باراکودایە

and if you're an octopus or a cephalopod,

ئەگەر تۆ ئەختەبوتێک یان سیپالۆپۆدس بیت

you need to really understand how to use your surroundings to hide.

دەبێت لەوە تێبگەیت کە پێویستت بەوە هەیە لەو دەوروبەرە خۆت بشاریتەوە

لە دیمەنی داهاتودا، مەرجانێکی زۆر جوان دەبینن لە خوارەوە

In the next scene, you're going to see a nice coral bottom.

ئەختەبوتێکیش دەبینن، کە زۆر ئاشکرا و دیارە

And you see that an octopus would stand out

ئەگەر فێڵ بەکار نەهێنێت

very easily there if you couldn't use your camouflage,

بە بەکارهێنانی گۆڕینی ڕەنگی پێستی و چرچ بونی

use your skin to change color and texture.

ئەوەی لەبەردەممدایە هەندێک قەوزەیە

Here's some algae in the foreground --

and an octopus.

لەگەڵ ئەختەبوتێک. ئەوە سەیر نیە؟ ئێستا تارمایی ڕۆجەری چووە سەر

Ain't that amazing?

Now, Roger spooked him, so he took off in a cloud of ink,

هەڵدێت وەک پەڵە هەورێکی مورەکەب، کاتێک

and when he lands, the octopus says, "Oh, I've been seen.

ئەختەبوتەکە دەڕوات دەڵێین ئۆو بینیمان

The best thing to do is to get as big as I can get."

باشترین شت کە بکرێت، بە دەستهێنانی گەورەترینە کە لە توانادا بێت

That big brown makes his eyespot very big.

ئەم ڕەنگە قاوەییە چاوەکانی گەورە دەردەخات

So, he's bluffing. Let's do it backwards.

کەواتە، ئەو ساختەچییە. با بگەڕێینەوە بۆ دواوە

I thought he was joking when he first showed it to me.

وا هەستم کرد گاڵتەم لەگەڵ دەکات کاتێک یەکەم جار ئەمەی نیشاندام

I thought it was all graphics. So here it is in reverse.

وامدەزانی ئەوانە هەمووی هێڵکاریین.. بەڵام ئەوەتا پێچەوانەیە

سەیری ڕەنگی پێستی بکەن، سەیری پێکهاتەی پێستی بکەن

Watch the skin color; watch the skin texture.

Just an amazing animal, it can change color and texture

تەنها زیندەوەرە کە بتوانێت ڕەنگی و پێکهاتەکەی بگۆڕێت و

to match the surroundings.

سەیری دەوروبەری بکات، سەیری ئەو خۆ گونجاندنەی بکەن لەگەڵ ئەم قەوزەدا

Watch him blend right into this algae.

One, two, three.

یەک، دوو، سێ. (پێکەنین)

And now he's gone, and so am I. Thank you very much.
