We're going to go on a dive to the deep sea,

자 이제부터 바닷속으로 한번 같이 들어가 볼까요?

and anyone that's had that lovely opportunity

한번이라도 심해저에 갔다 와본 사람은 다 압니다.

knows that for about two and half hours on the way down,

두시간 반만 내려가면 아름다울 정도로 완벽함

it's a perfectly positively pitch-black world.

어둠이 기다리고 있다는 걸 말이죠.

And we used to see the most mysterious animals out the window

잠수정의 창 밖으로는 뭐라 묘사하기도 힘든 신비한 생명체들이

that you couldn't describe:

왔다갔다 합니다. 반짝반짝 하면서 말이죠.

these blinking lights -- a world of bioluminescence, like fireflies.

마치 반딧불이처럼. 유기 발광의 세계입니다.

ORCA(해양연구보존회)에 유디트 위터라는 분이 계십니다.

Dr. Edith Widder -- she's now at the Ocean Research and Conservation Association --

심해의 광경을 찍을 수 있는

was able to come up with a camera

특수한 카메라를 고안해 내셨죠. 지금부터는

that could capture some of these incredible animals,

이 카메라에 잡힌 심해의 신비를 같이 보도록 하겠습니다.

and that's what you're seeing here on the screen.

That's all bioluminescence. Like I said: just like fireflies.

유기 발광의 세계입니다. 바닷속의 반딧불이입니다.

나무 밑에 날으는 칠면조가 있네요. (웃음)

There's a flying turkey under a tree.

(Laughter)

제 전공이 지질학이라서 그렇습니다. 괜찮아요.

I'm a geologist by training.

But I love that.

And you see, some of the bioluminescence they use to avoid being eaten,

심해의 생명체들은 이런 발광기능을 여러가지 용도로 써먹씁니다.

한쪽은 먹히지 않으려고..

some they use to attract prey,

또 한쪽은 먹으려고 말이죠.

but all of it, from an artistic point of view,

하지만 순전히 미의 관점에서만 보면 정말 아름답기 그지없죠.

is just positively amazing.

And a lot of what goes on inside --

안에서 무슨 일이 일어나나 한번 볼까요.

There's a fish with glowing eyes, pulsating eyes.

안광이 점멸하는 물고기네요.

Some of the colors are designed to hypnotize,

이 색깔들은 최면을 유도하기 위해 고안됐습니다.

these lovely patterns.

이 패턴들좀 보세요. 특히 이 마지막 것.

And then this last one,

one of my favorites, this pinwheel design.

소용돌이 무늬입니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 거죠.

Just absolutely amazing, every single dive.

매 다이빙이 놀라움의 극치입니다.

That's the unknown world, and today we've only explored

전혀 탐사되지 않은 신비의 영역입니다. 인류가 바다에 대해 아는 것은

about 3 percent of what's out there in the ocean.

전체의 3%에 지나지 않습니다.

Already we've found the world's highest mountains,

우리는 이미 세계에서 가장 높은 산을 발견했습니다.

가장 깊은 계곡도 발겼했고,

the world's deepest valleys,

underwater lakes, underwater waterfalls --

수중 호수와, 수중 폭포까지 발견했습니다.

a lot of that we shared with you from the stage.

지금까지 보신것들까지 포함해서 말이죠.

And in a place where we thought no life at all,

한가지 놀라운 것은, 생명체가 전혀 없으리라 여겨졌던

we find more life, we think, and diversity and density

그런 곳들이 사실은 그 어떤 곳보다 생명으로 가득했다는 것입니다.

than the tropical rainforest,

열대 밀림보다도 더 말입니다. 이게 뜻하는 건

which tells us that we don't know much about this planet at all.

우리가 이 행성에 대해 아는 게 전혀 없다는 거예요.

아직도 97%나 남아있어요. 이 97%가 놀라움으로 꽉 찼건 아니면 비었건간에

There's still 97 percent,

and either that 97 percent is empty or just full of surprises.

But I want to jump up to shallow water now

어쨌거나 한번 얕은 물에 한번이라도 들어가보면 알아요.

and look at some creatures that are positively amazing.

그 얕은 곳의 생명만 봐도 놀라움을 금할 길이 없습니다.

Cephalopods -- head-foots.

머리-발로 이루어진 두족류입니다. 어릴땐 그냥 오징어라 불렀죠.

As a kid I knew them as calamari, mostly.

(Laughter)

이건 문어입니다.

This is an octopus.

This is the work of Dr. Roger Hanlon at the Marine Biological Lab,

해양생물학 연구소의 로저 핸런 박사가 발견한 것으로,

뛰어난 시지각을 가진 두족류가 어떻게

and it's just fascinating how cephalopods can,

with their incredible eyes, sense their surroundings,

주위의 사물을 감지하고, 빛을 보고 또 패턴을 인지하는지를

look at light, look at patterns.

보면 입을 다물수가 없습니다.

Here's an octopus moving across the reef,

산호초를 근처에 문어가 있습니다.

finds a spot to settle down, curls up and then disappears into the background.

적당한 위치를 찾아 몸을 둘둘 말아서는 배경 속으로 그냥 사라져버립니다.

Tough thing to do.

쉬운 일이 아닐텐데 말이죠.

In the next bit, we're going to see a couple squid.

이번엔 쌍오징어를 보도록 하겠습니다.

Now males, when they fight,

숫놈입니다. 얘네들은 싸울 때

if they're really aggressive, they turn white.

진짜 화가나면 흰 색으로 변합니다.

여기 숫놈 두마리가 싸우고 있습니다.

And these two males are fighting.

They do it by bouncing their butts together,

서로 엉덩이를 퉁기는게 싸우는 겁니다.

재미있는 발상이죠. 이번엔 숫놈이 왼쪽에 있고

which is an interesting concept.

Now, here's a male on the left and a female on the right,

암놈이 오른쪽에 있습니다.

and the male has managed to split his coloration

숫놈이 갑자기 몸의 색을 둘로 나눕니다.

so the female only always sees the kinder, gentler squid in him.

암놈이 저를 친절하고 착한 놈으로 여기게 하려는 속셈이죠.

이 숫놈은.. (웃음) 다시 한번 보시죠.

(Laughter)

Let's take a look at it again. Watch the coloration:

다시 한번 보시겠습니다. 색의 변화에 주목하세요.

white on the right, brown on the left.

오른쪽은 흰색이고, 왼쪽은 갈색이네요.

He takes a step back,

한발짝 뒤로 물러서서는 여전히 다른 숫놈과 싸우면서

he's keeping off the other males by splitting his body,

색을 반으로 나눠 반대쪽만 암컷에게 보여주는겁니다.

and comes up on the other side --

Bingo!

짠~! 제가 아까 얘기 했죠.

Now, I'm told that's not not just a squid phenomenon with males,

이 모든 게 숫놈 오징어에만 해당되는 게 아니라고. 저도 잘 몰라요.

but I don't know.

(박수)

(Laughter)

Cuttlefish. I love cuttlefish.

제가 좋아하는 갑오징어입니다. 호주 왕갑오징어죠.

This is a Giant Australian Cuttlefish.

And there he is, his droopy little eyes up here.

힘이 잔뜩 들어간 눈좀 보세요.

얘네들한테도 놀라운 재주가 많습니다.

But they can do pretty amazing things, too.

곧 얘네들이 어떻게 '클로킹'을 하는지 보실겁니다.

Here we're going to see one backing into a crevice,

and watch his tentacles --

얘네 발좀 보세요.

he just pulls them in, makes them look just like algae.

발을 안으로 끌어들여서는, 꼭 말미잘인 척 하네요.

Disappears right into the background.

이정도면 완벽한 클로킹이죠. 배경과 하나가 됐습니다.

Positively amazing.

그저 놀랍습니다. 두마리 숫놈이 싸고 있습니다.

Here's two males fighting.

다시 말씀드리지만, 얘네들 진짜 영리합니다.

Once again, they're smart enough, these cephalopods;

they know not to hurt each other.

어떻게 상처 안입히고 싸울지를 알아요.

But look at the patterns that they can do with their skin.

피부로 무슨 짓을 하는지 잘 보세요.

That's an amazing thing.

신기하지 않나요?

문어입니다. 얘들도 돌아다니면서 가급적이면 눈에 띄지 말아야 할 때가 있죠.

Here's an octopus.

Sometimes they don't want to be seen when they move,

더 큰 놈한테 잡아 먹힐 수도 있으니까요.

because predators can see them.

여기, 이녀석은 특기가 바위인 척 하기인데,

This guy can make himself look like a rock,

주위를 살피더니

and, looking at his environment,

바닥으로 미끄러져 들어갑니다.

can actually slide across the bottom,

물결과 그림자를 이용해 교묘히 위장하는거죠.

using the waves and the shadows so he can't be seen.

그냥 배경에 녹아들어요. 움직임까지도 말입니다.

His motion blends right into the background --

the moving rock trick.

돌인척하기 특기 입니다. 이런 것들이 얕은 바다에서 볼 수 있는 광경입니다.

So, we're learning lots new from the shallow water.

Still exploring the deep, but learning lots from the shallow water.

깊은 바다에도 배울 게 많지만,

얕은 곳에도 새로운게 없는 게 아닙니다.

There's a good reason why:

얕은 바다가 포식자로 가득한 데에는 다 이유가 있습니다.

the shallow water's full of predators -- here's a barracuda --

여기 바라쿠다가 있습니다.

and if you're an octopus or a cephalopod,

여러분들이 만약 문어나 오징어라면

you need to really understand how to use your surroundings to hide.

어떻게 주위를 은폐물로 활용하는지 이해할 수 있을겁니다.

다음 장면에서 여러분은 아름다운 산호초 밑부분을 보시게 됩니다.

In the next scene, you're going to see a nice coral bottom.

보시다시피 문어는 위장술을 쓰지 않으면

And you see that an octopus would stand out

눈에 엄청 잘 띌 수밖에 없습니다.

very easily there if you couldn't use your camouflage,

피부 질감과 색을 바꿔야 하는 거죠.

use your skin to change color and texture.

전경엔 말미잘 등의 해조류가 있습니다.

Here's some algae in the foreground --

and an octopus.

이게 바로 문어입니다. 장난이 아니죠. 로저가 이렇게 자극을 하면,

Ain't that amazing?

Now, Roger spooked him, so he took off in a cloud of ink,

잉크 연막을 치고는 사라져버리죠.

and when he lands, the octopus says, "Oh, I've been seen.

이 문어는 아마 안도의 한숨을 쉬며 생각했을 겁니다.

The best thing to do is to get as big as I can get."

"눈에 띄었나 보네. 담번엔 최대한 커다란 척을 해야겠어."

That big brown makes his eyespot very big.

저 갈색 점은 마치 큰 눈처럼 보입니다.

So, he's bluffing. Let's do it backwards.

허풍이죠. 거꾸로 돌려볼까요?

I thought he was joking when he first showed it to me.

전 이걸 첨 봤을 때 로저가 저한테 장난을 치는줄 알았습니다.

I thought it was all graphics. So here it is in reverse.

다 컴퓨터 그래픽이라고 여겼죠. 그래서 거꾸로 보여드립니다.

피부색 변하는거 보세요. 피부 질감도요.

Watch the skin color; watch the skin texture.

Just an amazing animal, it can change color and texture

참으로 놀랍죠. 색만 바꾸는게 아니라

to match the surroundings.

질감까지도 바꿉니다. 어떻게 말미잘인척 하는지 한번 보세요.

Watch him blend right into this algae.

One, two, three.

하나, 둘, 셋.
