So I asked myself, where do people like this come from?

And my initial conclusion was that they're just better people.

That's why they're attracted to the military.

What I learned was that it's the environment,

It's this deep sense of trust and cooperation.

The problem with concepts of trust and cooperation

If you go back 50,000 years

what we find is that the world

When a leader makes the choice

The reason we like flying Southwest Airlines

Great leaders would never sacrifice

Bob Chapman, who runs

සති හතරක පඩි නැති නිවාඩුවක් ගැනීම අනිවාර්ය කරා.

They could take it any time they wanted,

ඒක ඕනෑම වෙලාවක ගන්න පුළුවන්,

and they did not have to take it consecutively.

ඒවගේම එක දිගට ගත යුතුත් නැහැ.

But it was how Bob announced the program

බොබ් එය දැනුම් දුන් විදිය

that mattered so much.

බොහෝ වැදගත් වුණා.

He said, it's better that we should all suffer a little

ඔහු කිව්වා, අපි ඔක්කෝම ටිකක් දුක් විඳින එක හොඳයි

than any of us should have to suffer a lot,

ටික දෙනෙක් ගොඩක් දුක් විඳිනවාට වඩා,

and morale went up.

They saved 20 million dollars,

and most importantly, as would be expected,

when the people feel safe and protected by the leadership in the organization,

the natural reaction is to trust and cooperate.

ඉබේම විශ්වාසය හා සහයෝගය ඇති වෙනවා.

And quite spontaneously, nobody expected,

ඒ වගේම, එකවරම, නොසිතපු ලෙසින්

people started trading with each other.

සේවක පිරිස එකිනෙකා සමඟ හුවමාරු කරගත්තා.

Those who could afford it more

වියදම දැරිය හැකි අය

would trade with those who could afford it less.

හුවමාරු කරගත්තා එසේ නොහැකි අය සමඟ.

People would take five weeks

සමහර අය සති පහක් නිවාඩු ගත්තා

so that somebody else only had to take three.

වෙන කෙනෙකුට සති තුනක නිවාඩු ගන්න පුළුවන් වෙන්න.

Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank.

නායකත්වය කියන්නේ කැමැත්තෙන් කරන දෙයක්. ඒක නිළයක් නෙවෙයි.

I know many people at the seniormost

මම දන්නවා බොහෝ ජේ‍්‍යෂ්ඨයින්

levels of organizations

අායතනවල

who are absolutely not leaders.

එහෙත් ඒ අය නායකයින් වන්නේ නෑ.

They are authorities, and we do what they say

ඒ අය බලධාරීන්, අපි ඒ අය කියන දේ කරනවා

because they have authority over us,

ඒ අයට බලය තිබෙන නිසා,

but we would not follow them.

ඒත් අපි ඔවුන් අනුගමනය කරන්ෙන් නැහැ.

And I know many people

ඒ වගේම මම බොහෝ මිනිසුන් දන්නවා

who are at the bottoms of organizations

ආයතනවල පහළින් සිටින

who have no authority

ඔවුන්ට කිසිම බලයක් නැහැ

and they are absolutely leaders,

නමුත් ඔවුන් සැබවින්ම නායකයින්,

and this is because they have chosen to look after

ඒ මොකද ඒ අය තෝරා ගෙන තිබෙනවා බලා ගන්න

the person to the left of them,

ඔවුන්ට වමතින් සිටින කෙනාවත්,

and they have chosen to look after

ඒ වගේම ඔවුන් බලා ගන්නවා

the person to the right of them.

ඔවුන්ට දකුණතින් සිටින කෙනාවත්.

This is what a leader is.

මේ තමයි නායකයෙක් කියන කෙනා.

I heard a story

මට කථාවක් අහන්න ලැබුණා

of some Marines

මරීන් භට පිරිසක් ගැන

who were out in theater,

ඔවුන් නාට්‍යයක් බලන්න ගිහින්

and as is the Marine custom,

මරීන් හමුදාවේ චාරත්‍රය පරිදි

the officer ate last,

නිලධාරියා තමයි අවසානයටම ආහාර ගත්තේ,

and he let his men eat first,

ඔහු ඔහුගේ පිරිසට පළමුව ආහාර ගන්න ඉඩ දුන්නා,

and when they were done,

ඔවුන් ආහාර අරගෙන ඉවර වෙලා බලද්දී

there was no food left for him.

ඔහුට කන්න කෑම ඉතිරි වෙලා නැහැ.

And when they went back out in the field,

ඔවුන් අාපහු වැඩට ගියාම

his men brought him some of their food

ඔහුගේ පිරිස ඔවුන්ගේ ආහාර වලින් කොටසක් ඔහුට ගෙනැත් දුන්නා

so that he may eat,

ඔහුට කන්න

because that's what happens.

ඒ මොකද ඒක තමයි සිද්ධ වෙන්නේ.

We call them leaders because they go first.

නායකයෙක් කියා කියන්නේ ඔහු ප්‍රථමයෙන්ම ගමන් කරන නිසා.

We call them leaders because they take the risk

නායකයෙක් කියන්නේ ඔහු අවදානම ගන්න නිසා

before anybody else does.

වෙන කෙනෙකුට කලින්.

We call them leaders because they will choose

නායකයෙක් යැයි කියන්නේ ඔහු තෝරන නිසා

to sacrifice so that their people

කැප කරන්න ඔහුගේ පිරිස

may be safe and protected

රැක ගැනීමට

and so their people may gain,

ඉන් ඔහුගේ පිරිසට වාසි ලැබීමට හැකි වන්න

and when we do, the natural response

අපි එහෙම කරාම ඉබේම

is that our people will sacrifice for us.

අපේ පිරිස අපි වෙනුවෙන් කැප කිරීම් කරනවා.

They will give us their blood and sweat and tears

ඔවුන් අපි වෙනුවෙන් ලේ, ඩහදිය හා කඳුළු හෙළනවා

to see that their leader's vision comes to life,

ඔවුන්ගේ නායකයාගේ දර්ශනය සත්‍යයක් කරන්න,

and when we ask them, "Why would you do that?

අපි ඇහුවම "ඇයි එහෙම කරන්නේ?

Why would you give your blood and sweat and tears

ඇයි ඔබේ ලේ, කඳුළු, ඩහදිය දෙන්නේ

for that person?" they all say the same thing:

ඒ කෙනා වෙනුවෙන්?" සෑම කෙනෙක්ම කියන්නේ:

"Because they would have done it for me."

"ඔවුනුත් මං වෙනුවෙන් ඒ දේම කරන නිසා."

And isn't that the organization

එවැනි ආයතනයක නෙවෙයිද

we would all like to work in?

අපි සෑම කෙනෙක්ම රැකියාව කරන්න කැමති වන්නේ?
