I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

Voor dit antwoord, keren we ons naar ons spirtuele pad.

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

In elke religieuze traditie is er wat men noemt het uiterlijke en innerlijke pad.

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

of het exoterische pad en het esotherische pad.

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

Het esoterisch pad van de Islam is beter gekend als soefisme of tasavvuf in Arabisch.

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

En deze dokters of deze meesters,

And these doctors or these masters,

deze spirituele meesters van de soefitraditie,

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

verwijzen naar leerscholen en voorbeelden van onze profeet,

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

wat ons leert waar de bron van onze problemen liggen.

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

In één van de gevechten dat de profeet leverde,

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

vertelde hij zijn volgelingen, "We zijn terug aan het keren van de kleine oorlog

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

naar de grotere oorlog, tot de grotere strijd."

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

En zei zeiden, "Boodschapper van God, we zijn moe van de strijd.

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

Hoe kunnen we naar een grotere strijd gaan?"

How can we go to a greater battle?"

Hij zei, "Dat is de strijd van de zelf, de strijd van het ego."

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

De bronnen van menselijke problemen hebben te maken met hoogmoed, 'ik'.

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

De bekende soefimeester Rumi, die de meesten van jullie zeer goed kennen,

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

heeft een verhaal waarin hij over een man spreekt die naar het huis van een vriend gaat

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

en klopt op de deur,

and he knocks on the door,

en een stem antwoordt, "Wie is daar?"

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

as we might say in English.

De stem zegt, "Ga weg."

The voice says, "Go away."

Na velen jaren van training, discipline, zoeken en worstelen,

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

komt hij terug,

he comes back.

en met een veel grotere nederigheid klopt hij weer op de deur.

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

De stem vraagt, "Wie is daar?"

The voice asks, "Who is there?"

Hij zeg, "Jij bent het, o hartenbreker."

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

De deur zwiert open, en de stem zegt,

The door swings open, and the voice says,

"Kom binnen, in dit huis is er geen plaats voor twee Ikken,

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

met twee grote I's, niet deze ogen voor twee egos.

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

En Rumi's verhalen zijn metaforen voor het spirituele pad.

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

In Gods aanwezigheid is er geen ruimte voor meer dan één ik,

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

en dat is de "ik" van goddelijkheid.

and that is the "I" of divinity.

In een lering, een hadith qudsi in onze traditie,

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

zegt God dat "mijn dienaar," of "mijn wezen, mijn menselijk wezen,

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

God zegt, "Mijn dienaar komt steeds dichter bij me,

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

extra punten zouden we heb kunnen noemen,

extra credit, we might call it --

"tot ik van hem of haar hou.

"until I love him or love her.

En als ik van mijn dienaar hou,", zegt God,

And when I love my servant," God says,

word ik de ogen waardoor hij of zij kijkt,

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

de oren waarmee hij of zij luistert,

the ears by which he or she listens,

de hand waarmee hij of zij grijpt,

the hand by which he or she grasps,

en de voet waarmee hij of zij wandelt,

and the foot by which he or she walks,

en het hart waarmee hij of zij begrijpt."

and the heart by which he or she understands."

Het is de eenwording van onze zelf met de goddelijkheid

It is this merging of our self with divinity

dat is de les en het doel van ons spiritueel pad en al onze geloofstradities

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

Moslims zien Jezus als de meester van soefisme,

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

de grootste profeet en boodschapper die kwam om het spirituele pad te benadrukken.

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

Als hij zegt; "ik ben de geest en ik ben de weg,"

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

als de profeet Mohammed zei, "Wie mij zag heeft God gezien,"

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

is het omdat ze zo een instrument van God werden,

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

ze werden een deel van Gods stoom,

they became part of God's team --

zo dat Gods wil manifesteerde door hen

so that God's will was manifest through them,

niet door te handelen uit de zelf en eigen ego

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

Medeleven op aarde is gegeven, het is in ons.

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

Het enige wat we moeten doen is onze ego's links laten liggen,

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

get our egotism out of the way.

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

een spirituele ervaring heeft gehad,

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

een moment in ons leven wanneer, voor enkele seconden, misschien een minuut,

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

de grenzen van het ego oplostten.

the boundaries of your ego dissolved.

En in die minuut, je je één voelde met het universum,

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

één met die kruik water, één met ieder menselijk wezen,

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

één met de schepper,

one with the Creator --

en je voelde je in het bijzijn van kracht, van verwondering,

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

de diepste liefde, het diepste gevoel van medeleven en genade

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

dat je ooit ervaarde in jullie levens.

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

Dat moment is een gift van God aan ons,

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

een gift als, voor een moment, hij die grens opheft

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,

en voor wiens doel we zullen sterven,

and for whose purpose we shall die,

en voor wiens doel we herrijzen,

and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again

om aan God te verantwoorden hoe medelevende wezens we zijn geweest.

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

Onze boodschap vandaag, en ons doel vandaag,

Our message today, and our purpose today,

en van diegenen die hier vandaag zijn,

and those of you who are here today,

en het doel van dit handvest van medeleven, is om te herineren.

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

Omdat de Koran ons altijd aanspoort om te herinneren, en elkaar te herinneren,

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

omdat de kennis van de waarheid in iedereen zit.

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

We weten het allemaal.

We know it all.

We hebben toegang tot dit alles.

We have access to it all.

Jung mag het het onderbewuste genoemd hebben.

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

Door ons onderbewuste, in onze dromen,

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

het slapen, wat de Koran de "kleine dood" noemt,

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

de tijdelijke dood.

"the temporary death" --

In onze slaap dromen we, hebben we visioenen,

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

reizen we zelfs uit onze lichamen, voor velen van ons,

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

en zien we wonderbaarlijke dingen.

and we see wonderful things.

Reizen we buiten de grenzen van de ruimte zoals we het kennen om,

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

en buiten de grenzen van tijd zoals we die kennen.

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

Maar dit alles is voor ons om de naam van de schepper te eren

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

God, Bokh, hoe je hem ook wilt noemen, Allah, Ram, Om,

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

whatever the name might be through which you name

of je met de aanwezigheid van goddelijkheid verbindt

or access the presence of divinity,

is de kern van het absolute zijn,

it is the locus of absolute being,

absolute liefde, vergeving en medeleven,

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

en absolute kennis en wijsheid,

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

wat Hindoes satchidananda noemen.

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

De taal verschilt,

The language differs,

maar het doel is hetzelfde.

but the objective is the same.

Rumi heeft nog een ander verhaal

Rumi has another story

over 3 personen; een Turk, een Arabier,

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

en ik vergeet de derde persoon, wat mij betreft kan het een Maleisiër zijn

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

Eén vraagt naar angour, zeg dat het een Engelsman is,

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

En ze hebben ruzie omdat,

And they have a fight and an argument because

ik wil druiven, ik wil eneb, ik wil angour,

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

niet wetende dat het woord wat ze gebruiken

not knowing that the word that they're using

naar dezelfde realiteit verwijst in verschillende talen

refers to the same reality in different languages.

Er is maar één absolute realiteit per definitie,

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

één absolute zijn, per definitie,

one absolute being by definition,

omdat absoluut is, per definitie, alleen,

because absolute is, by definition, single,

én absoluut én enkelvoudig.

and absolute and singular.

Er is deze absolute concentratie van zijn,

There's this absolute concentration of being,

de absolute concentratie van bewustzijn,

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

besef, en absolute kern van medeleven en liefde

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

wat de hoofdeigenschappen van goddelijkheid zijn.

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

En dat zouden ook

And these should also be

de hoofdeigenschappen moeten zijn van wat het betekend mens te zijn.

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

Hetgene wat menselijkheid definieert, misschien biologisch,

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

is onze fysiologie,

is our physiology,

maar God definieert menselijkheid door onze spiritualiteit, door onze aard.

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

De engelen zwichten, niet voor het menselijk lichaam,

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

maar voor de menselijke ziel.

but before the human soul.

Waarom? Omdat de ziel, de menselijke ziel,

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

een deel van de goddelijke adem belichaamd,

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

een stuk van de goddelijke ziel.

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

als we leren dat we gemaakt zijn naar het goddelijke beeld.

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

Wat is het beeld van God?

What is the imagery of God?

Het beeld van God is het absolute zijn,

The imagery of God is absolute being,

absolute bewustzijn en kennis en wijsheid

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

en absolute medeleven en liefde.

and absolute compassion and love.

Dus, om menselijk te zijn,

And therefore, for us to be human --

in de grootste betekenis om mens te zijn,

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

in de meest vreugdevolle manier om mens te zijn,

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

betekent ook dat we zelf ook degelijke vertegenwoordigers

means that we too have to be proper stewards

van de goddelijke adem in ons zijn,

of the breath of divinity within us,

en zoeken naar het verbeteren van het zijn in onszelf,

and seek to perfect within ourselves the attribute of being,

het levend zijn, het zijn,

of being alive, of beingness;

the attribute of wisdom, of consciousness, of awareness;

en medelevende, liefdevolle wezens te zijn.

and the attribute of being compassionate and loving beings.

Dat is wat ik begrijp van mijn geloofstraditie,

This is what I understand from my faith tradition,

en wat ik geloof van mijn studie van andere geloofstradities,

and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,

wat het platform is waar we allemaal op moeten staan,

and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,

en als we op zulk een platform staan,

and when we stand on this platform as such,

geloof ik dat we een sublieme wereld kunnen maken.

I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.

En ik geloof, persoonlijk, dat we op de rand staan,

And I believe, personally, that we're on the verge

en met de aanwezigheid en hulp van mensen zoals jullie hier,

and that, with the presence and help of people like you here,

kunnen we de voorspelling van Jesaja kunnen brengen.

we can bring about the prophecy of Isaiah.

Hij voorspelde een periode

For he foretold of a period

waar mensen hun zwaarden zouden veranderen in ploegscharen

when people shall transform their swords into plowshares

en oorlogsvoering zullen vergeten.

and will not learn war or make war anymore.

We hebben een punt als mens bereikt, waar we geen optie meer hebben.

We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:

We moeten, we moeten onze ego's verlagen,

we must, we must lower our egos,

onze ego's beheersen, individueel ego, persoonlijk ego,

control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,

familiaal ego, nationaal ego,

family ego, national ego --

en de verheerlijking van het individu laten.

and let all be for the glorification of the one.
