Feisal Abdul Rauf: Lose your ego, find your compassion

I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

من درباره شفقت از نقطه نظر اسلام صحبت می کنم،

and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of

و شاید ایمان من به عنوان یک ایمانی که

as being one that is grounded in compassion.

پایه اش در شفقت باشد بنظر نیاید.

The truth of the matter is otherwise.

حقیقت موضوع چیز دیگریست.

Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,

قرآن، کتاب مقدس ما، شامل ۱۱۴ سوره میباشد،

and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,

و هر سوره با "بسم الله" آغاز میشود،

the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"

که می گوید بنام خداوند رحمان و بخشنده،

or, as Sir Richard Burton --

یا به قول سر ریچارد بورتون،

not the Richard Burton who was married to Elizabeth Taylor,

نه ریچارد بورتونی که با الیزابت تیلور ازدواج کرد،

but the Sir Richard Burton who lived a century before that

همان سر ریچارد بورتونی که یک قرن پیش زندگی می کرد،

and who was a worldwide traveler

و یک جهانگرد بزرگ بود،

and translator of many works of literature --

و مترجم کارهای ادبی بسیار بود،

translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."

که به این صورت ترجمه کرده: "بنام خداوند رحمان و رحیم."

And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,

و در قرآن، که از نظر مسلمین گفتار خداوند با بشریت است،

God says to his prophet Muhammad --

خداوند به پیامبرش محمد (ص)،

whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,

که به اعتقاد ما، آخرین پیامبر سلسله پیامبران،

beginning with Adam, including Noah, including Moses, including Abraham,

که با حضرت آدم شروع شده و شامل حضرات نوح و موسی و ابراهیم،

including Jesus Christ, and ending with Muhammad --

عیسی مسیح و خاتم آن حضرت محمد (ص) است،

that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,

فرمود: "ای محمد، تو را نفرستادیم

except as a 'rahmah,' except as a source of compassion to humanity."

مگر برای رحم و منبع رحمت برای بشریت."

For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,

و برای ما انسانها و مخصوصا برای ما مسلمانان،

whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet

که ماموریت و هدف از پیمودن راه پیامبر،

is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.

خود را تا آنجا که می شود شبیه پیامبر کردن، میباشد،

And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,

و پیامبر، در یکی از روایاتش گفته است:

"Adorn yourselves with the attributes of God."

"خود را با صفات خداوند بیارایید."

And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --

و چون خود خدا فرمود که اولین صفتش رحمت است،

in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"

در حقیقت، قرآن می گوید که: "خداوند بر خود شفقت را حکم کرد،"

or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --

یا "با شفقت خود را حکمفرما فرمود."

therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,

بنابراین، مقصود و ماموریت ما باید منبع شفقت بودن،

activators of compassion, actors of compassion

فعال کننده شفقت، بازیگران شفقت،

and speakers of compassion and doers of compassion.

مبلغین شفقت و مجریان شفقت باشد.

That is all well and good,

که همه خوب هستند،

but where do we go wrong,

ولی در کجا از این راه سرگردان شدیم،

and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?

و منبع کمبود شفقت در جهان چیست؟

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

برای جواب این سوال، ما رو به سوی طریقت روحانیمان میکنیم.

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

در تمام سنتهای مذهبی، هم مسیر درونی و هم مسیر بیرونی وجود دارد،

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

یا مسیر خارجی و عمومی و مسیر درونی و محرمانه.

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

مسیر درونی و محرمانه در اسلام بیشتر مشهور به صوفیسم (Sufism) و یا تصوف، به زبان عربی، است.

And these doctors or these masters,

و این دکترها یا این اساتید،

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

این اساتید روحانی سنت عرفانی،

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

به آموزه ها و نمونه های پیامبرمان،

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

که به ما منبع مشکل هایمان را می آموزدند، اشاره می کنند.

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

در یکی از جنگهایی که پیمابر شرکت کرد،

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

به پیروانش فرمود: "ما از جنگ کوچکتر برمیگردیم

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

به جنگی بزگتر، به مبازره ای بزرگتر."

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

و آنها گفتند؛ "ای پیامبر خدا، ما که از جنگ بیزاریم،

How can we go to a greater battle?"

چگونه به جنگ بزرگتر برویم؟

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

فرمودند: " آن جنگ با خویش است، نبرد با نفس."

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

منابع مشکلات بشریت ربط به خودپرستی دارد، به "من".

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

استاد نامی عرفان، حضرت مولانا، که بیشتر شما به خوبی او را میشناسید،

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

داستانی دارد که در آن مردی به خانه دوستش می رود

and he knocks on the door,

و درب را میزند،

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

صدایی جواب میدهد: "کیست؟"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

"منم"، یا به صورت گرامری صحیحتر، "این من هستم"

as we might say in English.

همانطوری که در انگلیسی میگوییم.

The voice says, "Go away."

صدا گفت: "برو دور شو"

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

بعد از سالها آموزش و انتظام و جستجو و تفحص،

he comes back.

آن شخص برمی گردد،

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

با فروتنی بسیار بیشتر، دوباره درب را می زند.

The voice asks, "Who is there?"

صدا می پرسد: "کیست؟"

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

او گفت: "تو، ای دلربا"

The door swings open, and the voice says,

در باز می شود و صدا می گوید:

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

"بیا تو، چون در این خانه جا برای دو من نیست"،

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

منظور دو کلمه من و نه چشمها برای دو نفس.

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

و داستانهای مولانا استعاره هایی هستند برای مسیر روحانی.

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

در حضور خدا، جایی برای بیشتر از یک من وجود ندارد،

and that is the "I" of divinity.

که آن من الوهیت است.

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

در حدیث قدسی،

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

خداوند میفرماید: "بنده من" یا "مخلوق من، بشر آفریده من،

does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me

بسوی من بجز بصورت آنچه که برایم عزیزتر است،

than what I have asked them to do."

که آن آنچه که از او خواسته ام میباشد، نمیاید."

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

و از شما، آنهایی که کارفرما هستید، می دانید که دقیقا منظور من چیست.

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

شما از کارمندتان می خواهید چیزی را که خواسته اید انجام دهند،

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

و اگر آن کار را انجام دهند، پس می توانند اضافه تر هم کار کنند،

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

ولی فراموش نکنید که از آنها چه خواسته اید که انجام دهند.

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

و خدا میفرماید: " بنده من، با اطاعت از دستوراتم،

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

به من نزدیکتر می شود،"

extra credit, we might call it --

شاید بخواهیم آن را اعتبار اضافه بنامیم،

"until I love him or love her.

"تا زمانی که عاشقش شوم

And when I love my servant," God says,

خدا میفرماید: "زمانی که من عاشق بنده ام می شوم،

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

من آن چشمی میشوم که او از پشت آن میبیند،

the ears by which he or she listens,

گوشی که او از آن میشنود،

the hand by which he or she grasps,

دستانی که با آنها میگیرد،

and the foot by which he or she walks,

پایی که با آن راه میرود،

and the heart by which he or she understands."

و قلبی که با آن درک میکند."

It is this merging of our self with divinity

این ادغام ما با الهیات است که

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

تعلیم و هدف مسیر روحانی و تمام سنتهای اعتقادی ماست.

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

مسلمانها حضرت عیسی را به عنوان یک استاد عرفان میشمارند،

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

بزرگترین پیامبر که برای تایید طریقت روحانی ظهور فرمود.

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

زمانی که میفرماید: "من روح هستم، و من مسیر هستم،"

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

زمانی که حضرت محمد (ص) میفرماید: "هر کسی که مرا دیده، خدا را دیده،"

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

بخاطر این است که آنها تبدیل به ابزار خداوند شده اند،

they became part of God's team --

آنها پاره ای از دم خدا شده اند،

so that God's will was manifest through them,

و خواست خداوند از طریق آنها آشکار میشود،

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

نه از طریق خودشان و یا نفسشان.

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

شفقت روی زمین بخشیده شده و در درون ماست.

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

تنها کاری که ما باید انجام بدهیم این است که نفس خود را از سر راهش برداریم،

get our egotism out of the way.

نفسانیت و خودپرستی خودمان را از سر راه برداریم.

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

مطمئنم، شاید همه شما، همانا اکثریت شما،

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

یک تجربه روحانی داشته اید،

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

لحظه ای در زندگیتان که برای چند ثانیه، گویا چند دقیقه،

the boundaries of your ego dissolved.

مرزهای نفستان ناپدید شدند.

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

و در آن لحظه، خود را یک با جهان حس کردید،

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

یک با آن پارچ آب، یک با تمام بشریت،

one with the Creator --

یک با آفریدگار،

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

و خود را در حضور قدرت، هیبت،

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

عمیقترین عشق، عمیقترین حس رحمت و مرحمتی

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

که در تمام زندگیتان ترجبه کرده اید، حس کردید.

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

آن لحظه هدیه خداوند به ماست،

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

هدیه ای است که، زمانیکه برای یک لحظه، او آن مرزها را بر میدارد،

which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"

مرزهایی که ما را اصرار به من، من، من می کند،

and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,

یکدفعه، مانند آن شخص در داستان مولانا،

we say, "Oh, this is all you.

می گوییم: "وای، همه چیز تویی."

This is all you. And this is all us.

همه چیز تویی و همه چیز ماییم.

And us, and I, and us are all part of you.

O, Creator! O, the Objective! The source of our being

همش آفریدگارست، تمام اهداف، منشاء هستی ما،

and the end of our journey,

و پایان سفر ما.

you are also the breaker of our hearts.

تو هم شکننده قلبهای ما هستی.

You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,

تو آنی که ما میبایست بسویش حرکت کنیم، دلیلی که ما بخاطرش زندگی کنیم،

and for whose purpose we shall die,

و دلیلی که بخاطرش بایست بمیریم،

and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again

و دلیلی که بخاطرش دوباره قیام کنیم

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

تا به خدا، به حدی که انسانی شفیق بوده ایم، گزارش دهیم.

Our message today, and our purpose today,

پیام و هدف امروز ما،

and those of you who are here today,

و همه شماها که امروز اینجا هستید،

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

و هدف این منشور شفقت، یادآورن است.

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

چرا که قرآن همیشه ما را به یادآوری تشویق می کند، که همدیگر را یادآور کنیم،

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

چون دانش حقیقت در درون همه انسانهاست.

We know it all.

ما همه چیز را میدانیم.

We have access to it all.

و به همه چیز دستیابی داریم.

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

کارل گوستاو یونگ آنرا ضمیر ناخودآگاه نامید.

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

از طریق ضمیر ناخودآگاهمام و رویاهایمان،

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

که قرآن حالت خواب را مرگ خفیف مینامد،

"the temporary death" --

مرگ موقتی.

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

در خواب، ما رویا می بینیم، مشاهداتی داریم،

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

حتی بیرون از بدنمان سفر میکنیم،

and we see wonderful things.

و چیزهای خارق العاده ای را می بینیم.

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

ما، ماوراء محدودیتهای فضایی و زمانی

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

سفر میکنیم.

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

ولی همه اینها از برای اینست تا ما نام آفریدگار را تجلیل کنیم،

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

که اسم احدش، رحمان و رحیم میباشد.

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

خدا یا هر چیز دیگه ای که می خواهید بنامیدش، اللّه، رم، اُم،

whatever the name might be through which you name

هر نامی، که بوسیله آن

or access the presence of divinity,

دسترسی به حضور الوهیت میدارید،

it is the locus of absolute being,

آن مکان وجود مطلق است،

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

عشق، شقفت و رحمت مطلق،

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

و دانش و معرفت مطلق،

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

که هندوها آنرا "ستچی داناندا" می نامند.

The language differs,

زبانها تفاوت دارند،

but the objective is the same.

ولی هدف یکی است.

Rumi has another story

مولانا داستان دیگری دارد،

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

درباره سه نفر، یک ترک و یک عرب،

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

و سومین نفر را فراموش کرده ام، ولی به نظرم می تونه مالای باشه.

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

یکی در جستجوی انگور بود، بگوییم که او انگلیسی بود،

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

یکی به دنبال عنب و دیگری به دنبال grape بود.

And they have a fight and an argument because

بین آنها بحث و دعوا شد چون،

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

من grape می خواهم و من عنب می خواهم و من انگور،

not knowing that the word that they're using

بدون اینکه بدانند که لغتی را که دارند استفاده میکنند،

refers to the same reality in different languages.

به یک واقعیت در زبانهای مختلف اشاره می کند.

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

در تعریف، تنها یک واقعیت مطلق،

one absolute being by definition,

و یک هستی مطلق وجود دارد،

because absolute is, by definition, single,

زیرا، که در تعریف، مطلق واحد است،

and absolute and singular.

و مطلق و منفرد.

There's this absolute concentration of being,

یک مجموعه هستی مطلق،

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

یک مجموعه آگاهی مطلق،

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

هشیاری، یک مرکز مطلق رحمت و عشق وجود دارد،

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

که صفات اولیه وحدانیت را توصیف می کند.

And these should also be

و آن نیز میبایست

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

صفات اولیه انسان باشد.

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

چون آنچه که بشریت را تعریف می کند، از لحاظ بیولوژیکی،

is our physiology,

فیزیولوژی ماست،

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

ولی خدا بشریت را با روحانیت تعریف می کند با طبیعتمان.

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

و در قرآن، خدا با فرشتگان صحبت می کند و میفرماید:

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

"زمانی که آدم را از گل رس شکل دادم،

and breathed into him of my spirit,

و از روح خودم درونش دمیدم،

then, fall in prostration to him."

در آنزمان، او را سجده کنید."

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

فرشتگان سجده کردند، نه بسوی جسم انسانی،

but before the human soul.

بلکه بسوی روح انسان.

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

چرا؟ چون روح، روح انسان،

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

تکه ای از دم الهی را در جسم نگه دارد،

a piece of the divine soul.

تکه ای از روح الهی.

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

در زبان انجیل نیز به این مسئله اشاره شده

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

زمانی که یاد گرفتیم که خداوند ما را بصورت خود آفرید.

What is the imagery of God?

تصویر خداوند چیست؟

The imagery of God is absolute being,

تصویر خدا وجود مطلق است،

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

آگاهی و دانش و معرفت مطلق

and absolute compassion and love.

و عشق و رحمت مطلق.

And therefore, for us to be human --

پس بنابراین برای اینکه ما انسان باشیم،

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

در والاترین معنای انسان بودن،

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

در لذت بخشترین معنای انسان بودن،

means that we too have to be proper stewards

الزام بر این دارد که ما نیز

of the breath of divinity within us,

خادم شایسته ی آن دم الهی در درونمان باشیم،

and seek to perfect within ourselves the attribute of being,

و بکوشیم تا صفات هستی،

of being alive, of beingness;

زنده بودن، بودن،

the attribute of wisdom, of consciousness, of awareness;

معرفت، آگاهی، هشیاری،

and the attribute of being compassionate and loving beings.

و صفت رحمان بودن و عاشق بودن را، در وجودمان کامل کنیم.

This is what I understand from my faith tradition,

این چیزی است که من از آموزه های ایمانی ام درک کرده ام،

and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,

و این چیزی است که از مطالعه آموزه های ایمانی دیگر فهمیده ام،

and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,

و این سکویی عمومی است که همه ما باید روی آن بایستیم،

and when we stand on this platform as such,

و زمانی که همچنان روی چنین سکویی بایستیم،

I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.

معتقدم که می توانیم دنیای شگفت آوری را بسازیم.

And I believe, personally, that we're on the verge

و شخصا معتقدم که ما نزدیک هستیم،

and that, with the presence and help of people like you here,

و با حضور و کمک افرادی چون شما،

we can bring about the prophecy of Isaiah.

می توانیم پیشگویی مسیح را به وقوع بپیواندانیم.

For he foretold of a period

زیرا او زمانی را پیش بینی کرد

when people shall transform their swords into plowshares

که مردم شمشیرهایشان را به گاوآهن تبدیل خواهند کرد،

and will not learn war or make war anymore.

و دیگر جنگ نخواهند کرد.

We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:

ما به مرحله ای از تاریخ بشریت رسیده ایم که گزینه دیگری نداریم.

we must, we must lower our egos,

ما باید نفس خود را فرو کشیم،

control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,

نفس خود را کنترل کنیم، چه بخواهد نفس شخصی، انفرادی،

family ego, national ego --

خانوادگی، یا ملی باشد،

and let all be for the glorification of the one.

و بگذاریم همه آنها جهت تکریم آن احد باشد.
