I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

मी इस्लामच्या दृष्टीकोनातून अनुकंपेबद्दल बोलतोय,

and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of

as being one that is grounded in compassion.

The truth of the matter is otherwise.

Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,

and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,

the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"

translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."

And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,

God says to his prophet Muhammad --

whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,

beginning with Adam, including Noah, including Moses, including Abraham,

including Jesus Christ, and ending with Muhammad --

that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,

For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,

whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet

is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.

And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,

"Adorn yourselves with the attributes of God."

And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --

in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"

वास्तविक, कुराण असं सांगतं की, “ईश्वरानं स्वतःला दयाळू बनण्याचा आदेश दिला"

or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --

अथवा, “स्वतःवर करुणेचा अंमल प्रस्थापित केला.”

therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,

म्हणूनच, आपलं उद्दिष्ट आणि ध्येय असलं पाहिजे, करुणेचे स्रोत बनणं,

activators of compassion, actors of compassion

करुणेचे संप्रेरक होणं, करुणेचे पाईक बनणं,

and speakers of compassion and doers of compassion.

करुणेचे प्रसारक बनणं, आणि करुणेचे कार्यकर्ते बनणं.

That is all well and good,

हे सर्व ठीक आहे,

but where do we go wrong,

पण आपलं चुकतं कुठं,

and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?

आणि या जगात करुणाहीनतेचे स्रोत काय आहेत?

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

याचं उत्तर आपण अध्यात्मिक मार्गानं शोधूयात.

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

प्रत्येक धार्मिक प्रथेमध्ये, एक बाह्य मार्ग असतो आणि एक अंतःमार्ग,

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

किंवा उघड मार्ग आणि गुप्त मार्ग.

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

And these doctors or these masters,

आणि हे पंडीत अथवा गुरु,

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

त्यानं आपल्या अनुयायांना सांगितलं, “आपण छोट्या युद्धाकडून परतत आहोत

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

मोठ्या युद्धाकडं, मोठ्या लढाईकडं.”

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

आणि ते म्हणाले, “हे देवदूता, आम्ही लढाईला विटलो आहोत.

How can we go to a greater battle?"

अजून मोठ्या लढाईला आम्ही कसं तोंड देणार?”

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

तो म्हणाला, “ती स्वतःची लढाई असेल, अहंकाराशी लढाई.”

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

मानवी समस्यांचं मूळ स्वार्थामध्येच असलं पाहिजे, 'मी' मध्ये.

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

प्रसिद्ध सुफी गुरु रुमी, जे तुमच्यापैकी बर्‍याचजणांना माहिती असतील,

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

त्यांच्या एका गोष्टीत ते एका व्यक्तीबद्दल बोलतात जी एका मित्राच्या घरी जाते

and he knocks on the door,

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

as we might say in English.

The voice says, "Go away."

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

he comes back.

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

आणि अतिशय विनम्रतेनं, ती परत दार ठोठावते.

The voice asks, "Who is there?"

आतून आवाज येतो, “कोण आहे?”

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

ती म्हणते, “तूच आहेस, पाषाणहृदयी.”

The door swings open, and the voice says,

धाडकन दार उघडतं, आणि आवाज येतो,

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

“आता आत ये, कारण या घरात दोन 'मी'साठी जागा नाही,

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

दोन इंग्रजी आय (I), आय म्हणजे डोळा नव्हे, दोन अहं साठी.

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

आणि रुमीच्या कथा अध्यात्मिक वाटेवरील रुपकं आहेत.

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

ईश्वराच्या उपस्थितीत, एका अहं पेक्षा जास्त जणांसाठी जागाच नसते,

and that is the "I" of divinity.

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

than what I have asked them to do."

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

तुमच्या कामगारांनी तुम्ही सांगितलेलं काम करावं अशी तुमची इच्छा असते,

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

आणि ते पूर्ण केल्यावर ते अधिक काम करु शकतात,

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

पण तुम्ही त्यांना जे करायला सांगितलंय त्याकडं दुर्लक्ष न करता.

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

आणि ईश्वर म्हणतो, “माझा सेवक माझ्या अधिकाधिक निकट येत राहतो,

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

मी त्यांना सांगितलेलं अधिकाधिक करुन,”

extra credit, we might call it --

आपण त्याला जास्तीचं पुण्य म्हणू शकतो,

"until I love him or love her.

“जोपर्यंत मी त्याच्यावर किंवा तिच्यावर प्रेमाचा वर्षाव करत नाही.

And when I love my servant," God says,

आणि जेव्हा मी माझ्या सेवकावर प्रेम करतो,” ईश्वर म्हणतो,

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

मी ते डोळे बनतो ज्यानं तो किंवा ती पाहू शकतात,

the ears by which he or she listens,

ते कान ज्यानं तो किंवा ती ऐकू शकतात,

the hand by which he or she grasps,

तो हात ज्यानं तो वा ती पकडू शकतात,

and the foot by which he or she walks,

आणि तो पाय ज्यानं तो वा ती चालू शकतात,

and the heart by which he or she understands."

आणि ते हृदय ज्यानं त्याला वा तिला जाणीव येते.”

It is this merging of our self with divinity

आपली हीच ईश्वराबरोबरची एकरुपता आहे,

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

जी आपल्या अध्यात्माची आणि सर्व श्रद्धा परंपरांची शिकवण व उद्दीष्ट आहे.

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

मुस्लिम येशूला सूफी गुरु मानतात,

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

तो महान प्रेषित व दूत जो अध्यात्मिक मार्गाचं महत्त्व पटवून द्यायला आला.

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

जेव्हा तो म्हणतो, “मीच आत्मा आहे, आणि मीच मार्ग आहे,”

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

जेव्हा प्रेषित मोहम्मद म्हणाले, “माझं दर्शन घेणार्‍याला ईश्वराचंच दर्शन घडतं,”

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

कारण ते ईश्वराचं इतकं एकरुप साधन बनले,

they became part of God's team --

की ते ईश्वराचाच अंश बनले,

so that God's will was manifest through them,

इतकं की ईश्वरेच्छा त्यांच्याच माध्यमातून प्रकट झाली

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

आणि त्यांनी स्वतंचं अस्तित्व आणि अहंकार सोडून दिले.

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

करुणा ही आपल्यामध्ये असतेच.

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

आपल्याला फक्त आपल्या अहंकाराला बाजूला सारायचं आहे,

get our egotism out of the way.

आपला स्वार्थ दूर लोटायचा आहे.

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

मला खात्री आहे, कदाचित तुमच्यापैकी सर्वांनी, किंवा तुमच्यापैकी बहुतेकांनी,

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

एक अशी अध्यात्मिक स्थिती अनुभवली आहे,

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

तुमच्या आयुष्यातील तो क्षण, काही सेकंद, कदाचित एखादा मिनीट,

the boundaries of your ego dissolved.

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

one with the Creator --

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

जी तुमच्या आयुष्यामध्ये आजवर अनुभवली नव्हती.

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

हाच क्षण म्हणजे आपल्याला मिळालेली दैवी देणगी आहे,

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

अशी भेट की, एका क्षणासाठी, तो पुसून टाकतो ती सीमारेषा

which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"

जी आपल्याला भरीस पाडते मी, मी, मी, माझं, माझं, माझं म्हणायला,

and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,

we say, "Oh, this is all you.

This is all you. And this is all us.

And us, and I, and us are all part of you.

O, Creator! O, the Objective! The source of our being

सर्व ईश्वरीय, सर्व उद्दिष्टं, आपला जीवनस्रोत,

and the end of our journey,

आणि आपला अंत.

you are also the breaker of our hearts.

तू आमची हृदयं तोडणाराही आहेस.

You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,

तूच आहेस ज्याच्याकडं आम्ही सर्वांनी बघायचं, ज्याच्या हेतूसाठी आम्ही जगायचं,

and for whose purpose we shall die,

आणि ज्याच्या हेतूसाठी आम्ही मरायचं,

and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again

आणि ज्याच्या हेतूसाठी आमचं पुनरुत्थान केलं जाईल

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

ईश्वराला उत्तर देण्यासाठी की आम्ही किती करुणामय जीव आहोत.

Our message today, and our purpose today,

आज आमचा संदेश, आणि आमचा उद्देश,

and those of you who are here today,

आणि तुमच्यापैकी जे आज इथं आहेत,

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

आणि या करुणेच्या सनदेचा उद्देश आहे, आठवण करुन देणं.

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

कारण कुराण नेहमीच आम्हाला लक्षात ठेवायला उद्युक्त करतं, एकमेकांना आठवण करुन देण्यासाठी,

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

कारण सत्यज्ञान हे प्रत्येक मनुष्यप्राण्यात असतं.

We know it all.

आपण हे सर्व जाणतो.

We have access to it all.

आपल्यासाठी हे सर्व उपलब्ध आहे.

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

जंगनं त्याला सुप्त मन संबोधलं असेल.

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

आपल्या सुप्त मनातून, तुमच्या स्वप्नांतून,

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

ज्याला कुराणमध्ये म्हटलं आहे, आपली निद्रीतावस्था, दुय्यम मृत्यु,

"the temporary death" --

क्षणिक मृत्यु.

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

आपल्या निद्रीतावस्थेत आपल्याला स्वप्नं पडतात, आपल्याला दिव्य दृष्टी मिळते,

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

आपण आपल्या शरीराच्या बाहेरही भ्रमण करतो, आपल्यापैकी बरेचजण,

and we see wonderful things.

आणि आपल्याला विस्मयकारक गोष्टी दिसतात.

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

ईश्वर, बोख, तुम्हाला जे नाव द्यावं वाटेल ते, अल्लाह, राम, ओम,

whatever the name might be through which you name

कुठलंही नाव ज्यायोगे तुम्ही संबोधता

or access the presence of divinity,

अथवा मिळवता दैवी अस्तित्व,

it is the locus of absolute being,

तेच निःसंशय अस्तित्वाचं निश्चित स्थान आहे,

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

निःसंशय प्रेम आणि दया आणि करुणा,

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

आणि निःसंशय ज्ञान व विद्वत्ता,

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

ज्याला हिंदू म्हणतात सच्चिदानंद.

The language differs,

भाषा वेगळी असेल,

but the objective is the same.

पण उद्देश एकच आहे.

Rumi has another story

रुमीची अजून एक कथा आहे

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

तिघांबद्दल, एक तुर्क, एक अरब,

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

आणि तिसरा कोण ते मी विसरलो, पण माझ्यामते, तो मलय असू शकतो.

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

एकजण अंगूर मागत असतो, एक जण, एक इंग्रज समजू,

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

And they have a fight and an argument because

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

not knowing that the word that they're using

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

because absolute is, by definition, single,

कारण निःसंशय म्हणजेच, एकमेव,

and absolute and singular.

आणि परिपूर्ण व एकमेवाद्वितीय.

There's this absolute concentration of being,

हेच परिपूर्ण अस्तित्वाचं केंद्रीकरण,

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

हेच परिपूर्ण शुद्धीचं केंद्रीकरण,

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

जाणीव, करुणा व प्रेमाचं निःसंशय स्थान

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

हेच ठरवतं देवत्वाचे मुलभूत गुणधर्म.

And these should also be

आणि तेच असले पाहिजेत

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

मानवी अस्तित्वाचे मुलभूत गुणधर्म.

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

कारण मानवजातीची व्याख्या, बहुदा जीवशास्त्रीयदृष्ट्या

is our physiology,

शरीरविज्ञानशास्त्र म्हणून होते,

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

पण ईश्वर मानवतेची व्याख्या करतो आपल्या परमार्थानुसार, आपल्या स्वभावानुसार.

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

आणि कुराणात म्हटलंय, तो देवदूतांशी बोलतो व म्हणतो,

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

“जेव्हा मी मातीपासून आदम निर्माण केला,

and breathed into him of my spirit,

आणि त्यामध्ये माझे प्राण फुंकले,

then, fall in prostration to him."

तेव्हा अतिशय थकून गेलो.”

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

देवदूत थकतात, मानवी शरीरासमोर नव्हे,

but before the human soul.

तर मानवी आत्म्यासमोर.

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

का? कारण त्या आत्म्यामध्ये, मानवी आत्म्यामध्ये,

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

दैवी श्वासाचा एक अंश असतो,

a piece of the divine soul.

ईश्वरीय आत्म्याचा एक अंश.

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

हे बायबलच्या शब्दकोशातही व्यक्त केलं आहे

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

जेव्हा आपल्याला शिकवलं जातं की ईश्वरीय प्रतिमेतूनच आपली निर्मिती झाली.

What is the imagery of God?

ईश्वराचं वर्णन कसं कराल?

The imagery of God is absolute being,

ईश्वराचं वर्णन म्हणजे परिपूर्ण अस्तित्व,

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

परिपूर्ण जाणीव आणि ज्ञान आणि विद्वत्ता

and absolute compassion and love.

आणि परिपूर्ण करुणा व प्रेम.

And therefore, for us to be human --

आणि, म्हणूनच, आपल्याला मनुष्य बनण्यासाठी,

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

मनुष्य बनण्याच्या व्यापक अर्थानं,

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

मानवतेच्या सर्वात सुखी कल्पनेनं,

means that we too have to be proper stewards

of the breath of divinity within us,

and seek to perfect within ourselves the attribute of being,

of being alive, of beingness;

जगण्याचे, अस्तित्वाचे,

the attribute of wisdom, of consciousness, of awareness;

विद्वत्तेच्या, शुद्धीच्या, जाणीवेच्या गुणधर्माचे,

and the attribute of being compassionate and loving beings.

आणि करुणामय व प्रेमळ बनण्याच्या गुणधर्माचे.

This is what I understand from my faith tradition,

माझ्या श्रद्धा परंपरांमधून मला हेच समजतं,

and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,

आणि इतर श्रद्धा परंपरांच्या माझ्या अभ्यासातून मला हेच समजतं,

and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,

आणि अशा समान व्यासपीठावर आपण एकत्र आलं पाहिजे,

and when we stand on this platform as such,

I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.

And I believe, personally, that we're on the verge

आणि अजून परत युद्ध करणार नाहीत.

We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:

आपण मानवी इतिहासाच्या त्या स्थितीप्रत आलो आहोत, जिथं आपल्याकडं पर्याय नाही.

we must, we must lower our egos,

आपल्याला आपला अहंकार उतरवलाच पाहिजे

control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,

अहंकारावर नियंत्रण आणलंच पाहिजे, मग तो वैयक्तिक अहंकार असेल, व्यक्तिगत अहंकार असेल,

family ego, national ego --

कौटुंबिक अहंकार, की राष्ट्रीय अहंकार,

and let all be for the glorification of the one.

आणि सर्वजण त्या एकमेवाद्वितीयाचं गुणगान गावोत.
