I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of

as being one that is grounded in compassion.

The truth of the matter is otherwise.

Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,

and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,

the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"

not the Richard Burton who was married to Elizabeth Taylor,

translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."

वो उस शब्द का अनुवाद करते हैं " ईश्वर के नाम में, जो कि संवेदनशील और करुणापूर्ण हैं"

And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,

और क़ुरान, जो कि मुसलमानों के लिए ईश्वर का मानवता को सन्देश है, उसकी एक कहावत में,

God says to his prophet Muhammad --

ईश्वर अपने पैगंबर मुहम्मद से,

whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,

beginning with Adam, including Noah, including Moses, including Abraham,

including Jesus Christ, and ending with Muhammad --

that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,

except as a 'rahmah,' except as a source of compassion to humanity."

For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,

whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet

is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.

And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,

And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --

in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"

or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --

therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,

That is all well and good,

but where do we go wrong,

and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

हर धार्मिक परंपरा में एक बाहरी और एक आंतरिक पथ होता हैं,

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

या कहें की भीतर की चेतना और बाहर की चेतना का पथ

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

भीतर की चेतना के पथ को इस्लाम में सूफ़ीवाद, या अरबी में तसव्वुफ़ कहा जाता है

And these doctors or these masters,

और ये हकीम या ये गुरु,

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

सूफी परंपरा के ये आध्यात्मिक गुरु,

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

हमारे पैगम्बर की शिक्षाओं और उदाहरणों को उद्धृत करते हैं,

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

जो हमें सिखाता है कि हमारी समस्याओं का स्रोत कहाँ है,

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

पैगम्बर ने जो युद्ध लड़े उनमें से एक में,

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

How can we go to a greater battle?"

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

and he knocks on the door,

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

as we might say in English.

The voice says, "Go away."

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

The door swings open, and the voice says,

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

और रूमी की कहानियां आध्यात्म के मार्ग की उपमा हैं.

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

ईश्वर की उपस्थिति में एक से ज्यादा मैं की जगह नहीं.

and that is the "I" of divinity.

और यह मैं देवत्व का है.

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

ईश्वर कहते है, "मेरे सेवक", या "मेरे जीव, मेरे मानव जीव,

does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me

जो मुझे प्यारा है उसके सहारे मेरे पास नहीं आता

than what I have asked them to do."

बल्कि उसके सहारे जो मैंने करने को कहा है

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

और आप में से जो नियोक्ता हैं, वे अच्छी तरह जानते हैं की मैं क्या कहना चाहता हूँ

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

और ईश्वर कहते है, मेरे सेवक मेरे और करीब होते जाते हैं,

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

मैंने जो उनसे करने को कहा है, उससे ज्यादा कुछ करके,

extra credit, we might call it --

हम उसे कुछ ज्यादा साख कह सकते हैं,

"until I love him or love her.

जब तक मैं उसको प्यार नहीं करता,

And when I love my servant," God says,

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

the ears by which he or she listens,

कान जिनसे वह सुनते हैं.

the hand by which he or she grasps,

हाथ जिससे वह पकड़ते हैं.

and the foot by which he or she walks,

पैर जिससे वह चलते हैं.

and the heart by which he or she understands."

और दिल जिससे वह समझता या समझती हैं."

It is this merging of our self with divinity

यह हमारे अहम् और देवत्व का वह समामेलन है.

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

यह हमारे अध्यात्मिक मार्ग और हमारी सभी धार्मिक परम्पराओं का उद्देश्य और सबक है.

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

मुसलमान यीशु को सूफीवाद का गुरु मानते हैं,

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

महानतम पैगम्बर और संदेशवाहक जो आध्यात्मिक मार्ग पर जोर देने आया.

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

जब वह कहता है, " मैं आत्मा हूँ, मैं रास्ता हूँ."

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

जब पैगम्बर मोहम्मद कहते हैं, "'जिसने मुझे देखा है उसने ईश्वर को देख लिया,"

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

ऐसा इस लिए क्यों कि वे ईश्वर के पुर्जे बन गए,

they became part of God's team --

वे ईश्वर की वाष्प का हिस्सा बन गए,

so that God's will was manifest through them,

ताकि ईश्वर की इच्छा उनके जरिये फ़ैली

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

अपने स्व और अहम् के जरिये काम नहीं किया.

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

धरती पर मानवीयता दी गयी है, यह हममें है.

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

हमें बस यही करना है कि रास्ते से अपने अहम् हटा देना है,

get our egotism out of the way.

अपने अहंकरवाद रास्ते से हटा देना है.

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

one with the Creator --

परम पिता में,

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

और तुमने स्वयं को शक्ति, विस्मय के सानिध्य में पाया,

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

सबसे गहरे प्यार, संवेदना और दया की सबसे गहरी भावना में

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

जो तुमने अपनी जिंदगी में कभी महसूस किया है

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

ये वह लम्हा है जो ईश्वर का हमें तोहफा है,

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

एक तोहफा जब एक लम्हे के लिए वह सीमा हटा देता है,

which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"

and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,

we say, "Oh, this is all you.

You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,

तुम वो हो जिसकी ओर हम सबको होना चाहिए, जो हमारे जीने का कारण होना चाहिए,

and for whose purpose we shall die,

और जिसके लिए हमें मरना चाहिए,

and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again

औए जिसके लिए हमें पुनर्जन्म लेना चाहिए.

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

ईश्वर को जवाब देने के लिए कि हम संवेदनशील रहे हैं.

Our message today, and our purpose today,

आज हमारा सन्देश, और आज हमारा उद्देश्य,

and those of you who are here today,

और तुममे में से जो आज यहाँ हैं,

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

और संवेदना के इस अधिकारपत्र का उद्देश्य याद दिलाना है.

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

क्योंकि कुरान हमेशा हमें याद रखने को, एक दूसरे को याद दिलाने को कहती है,

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

क्योंकि सत्य का ज्ञान हर एक इंसान के भीतर है.

We know it all.

हम यह सब जानते हैं.

We have access to it all.

हमारे पास इसका जरिया है.

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

जंग इसे अवचेतना कह सकते थे.

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

हमारी अवचेतना के जरिये, तुम्हारे ख्वाबों में,

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

जिसे कुरान कहती है, हमारी निद्रा की स्थिति, अल्प मौत,

"the temporary death" --

अस्थाई मौत.

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

अपनी निद्रा की स्थिति में हमें स्वप्न आते हैं, हमें आभास होता है,

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

हम अपने शरीर के बाहर यात्रा करते हैं, हममे से बहुत,

and we see wonderful things.

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

जिसका मूल नाम दयावान, दयालु है.

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

गौड, बोख, चाहे जिस नाम से पुकारो, अल्ला, राम, ॐ,

whatever the name might be through which you name

नाम कोई भी हो सकता है जिससे तुम नाम देते हो

or access the presence of divinity,

या देवत्व की मौजूदगी प्राप्त करते हो,

it is the locus of absolute being,

पूर्ण तत्व का केंद्र बिंदु है.

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

पूर्ण प्रेम और दया और संवेदना,

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

और पूर्ण ज्ञान और विवेक,

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

जिसे हिन्दू सच्चिनंद कहते हैं.

The language differs,

भाषा अलग है,

but the objective is the same.

पर उद्देश्य समान है.

Rumi has another story

रूमी के पास एक और कहानी है

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

कोई अंगूर मांग रहा है, जैसे कि एक अंग्रेज़,

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

कोई एनेब मांग रहा है और कोई ग्रेप्स मांग रहा है.

And they have a fight and an argument because

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

not knowing that the word that they're using

refers to the same reality in different languages.

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

one absolute being by definition,

परिभाषा के अनुसार एक पूर्ण अस्तित्व है,

because absolute is, by definition, single,

क्योंकि परिभाषा के अनुसार पूर्ण, एकल है,

and absolute and singular.

और पूर्ण और एकल,.

There's this absolute concentration of being,

यह अस्तित्व का पूर्ण केन्द्रीकरण है,

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

अवचेतना का पूर्ण केन्द्रीकरण है,

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

जागरूकता, संवेदना और प्रेम का पूर्ण केन्द्रीकरण

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

जो देवत्व के मूल भाव को पारिभाषित करता है.

And these should also be

और वह होना भी चाहिए

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

इन्सान होने का जो मतलब है, उसका मूल भाव.

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

जो इंसानियत को पारिभाषित करता है, शायद शारीरिक रूप से,

is our physiology,

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

and breathed into him of my spirit,

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

फ़रिश्ते साष्टांग होते हैं, लेकिन मानव शारीर के समक्ष नहीं,

but before the human soul.

बल्कि मानव आत्मा के समक्ष.

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

क्यों? क्योंकि आत्मा, मानव आत्मा,

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

दैवी श्वास के एक हिस्से का मूर्त रूप है,

a piece of the divine soul.

दैवी आत्मा का एक टुकड़ा है .

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

यह बाईबिल के कोष में भी वर्णित है

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

जब हमें यह सिखाया जाता है कि हम दैवी तस्वीर में बनाये गए थे.

What is the imagery of God?

ईश्वर का चित्र क्या है?

The imagery of God is absolute being,

ईश्वर का चित्र पूर्ण अस्तित्व है.

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

पूर्ण जागरूकता, ज्ञान और विवेक

and absolute compassion and love.

और पूर्ण संवेदना और प्रेम.

And therefore, for us to be human --

और, इसलिए, हमें इन्सान होने के लिए,

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

इन्सान होने का क्या मतलब है इसके सबसे बड़े मायने में,

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

means that we too have to be proper stewards

This is what I understand from my faith tradition,

यही है वह जो मैं अपने धर्म की परम्पराओं से समझता हूँ,

and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,

यही है वह जो मैं दूसरे धर्म की परम्पराओं के अपने अध्धयन से समझता हूँ,

and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,

और यह एक समान मंच है जिस पर हम सबको जरूर खड़े होना चाहिए,

and when we stand on this platform as such,

और इस मंच पर जब हम ऐसे खड़े होंगे,

I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.

And I believe, personally, that we're on the verge

and that, with the presence and help of people like you here,

we can bring about the prophecy of Isaiah.

For he foretold of a period

We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:

we must, we must lower our egos,

हमें जरूर, जरूर ही अपने अहम् को गिराना होगा,

control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,

हमारे अहम् पर नियंत्रण, चाहे वह एक का अहम् हो, व्यक्तिगत अहम् हो,

family ego, national ego --

परिवार का अहम्, राष्ट्र का अहम्,

and let all be for the glorification of the one.

और सब परमेश्वर के गुणगान में जुटें,
