I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of

as being one that is grounded in compassion.

The truth of the matter is otherwise.

Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,

and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,

the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"

or, as Sir Richard Burton --

not the Richard Burton who was married to Elizabeth Taylor,

but the Sir Richard Burton who lived a century before that

বরং তিনি জনাব রিচার্ড বাটন যিনি ইহার শতাব্দী পূর্বে বসবাস করতেন

and who was a worldwide traveler

এবং যিনি একজন বিশ্ব বিখ্যাত পর্যটক ছিলেন

and translator of many works of literature --

এবং বহু সাহিত্যের অনুবাদক ছিলেন,

translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."

অনুবাদ করেন "দয়াশীল ও দয়ালু ইশ্বরের নামে"

And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,

God says to his prophet Muhammad --

whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,

that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,

যে, "আঁমি তোমাকে প্রেরণ করিনি, হে মুহাম্মদ,

except as a 'rahmah,' except as a source of compassion to humanity."

মানবতার তরে 'রহমত' ব্যতিত, 'দয়ার উৎস' ব্যতিত"

For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,

মানুষ হিসেবে আমাদের জন্য এবং বিশেষ করে মুসলিম হিসেবে,

whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet

যাদের উদ্দেশ্য এবং যাদের লক্ষ্য নবীর পথ অবলম্বন করা

is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.

নিজেদের নবীর মত করে তৈরি করা ।

And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,

এবং মহানবী তাহার এক বর্ণনায় বলেন,

"Adorn yourselves with the attributes of God."

"আল্লাহর বৈশিষ্ট্যাবলী দিয়ে নিজেকে বিভূষিত কর।"

And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --

এবং স্বভূমিকায় ঈশ্বর বলেন যে তাঁহার প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য হল সমবেদনা-

in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"

বাস্তবিকই, কোরান বর্ণিত যে "ঈশ্বর নিঁজেকে নিবন্ধিত করেছেন সমবেদনায়"

or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --

অথবা "অলংকৃত করেছেন সমবেদনায়"--

therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,

সুতরাং, সমবেদনার উৎস হওয়া আমাদের উদ্দেশ্য এবং লক্ষ্য হতে হবে

activators of compassion, actors of compassion

and speakers of compassion and doers of compassion.

That is all well and good,

but where do we go wrong,

and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

অথবা আছে বাহ্য পথ এবং আভ্যন্তরীণ পথ

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

ইসলামের অভ্যন্তরীণ পথের জনপ্রিয় নাম যা সুফিবাদ বা আরবিতে "তাসাউফ"

And these doctors or these masters,

এবং এই বিদ্বানগণ বা এই শিক্ষকগণ

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

এই সুফী ঐতিহ্যের আধ্যাত্মিক শিক্ষকগণ,

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

আমাদের নবীর শিক্ষা এবং উদাহরণকে তুলে ধরেন

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

যা আমাদের শিক্ষা দেয় আমাদের সমস্যার মূল কোথায় ।

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

একটি যুদ্ধে যেখানে নবীজি যুদ্ধরত ছিলেন,

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

How can we go to a greater battle?"

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

মানুষের সমস্যার মূল কারণ হয়ে থাকে আত্মঅহমিকা যা "আমি" এর বর্হিপ্রকাশ।

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

জনপ্রিয় সুফি শিক্ষক রুমি, যিনি আপনাদের সবার কাছে পরিচিত

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

একটি ঘটনায় তিনি একজন ব্যক্তির কথা বলেন যে তার বন্ধুর বাড়িতে যায়

and he knocks on the door,

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

as we might say in English.

The voice says, "Go away."

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

he comes back.

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

The voice asks, "Who is there?"

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

The door swings open, and the voice says,

দরজা খুলল এবং কন্ঠটি বলল,

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

"ভিতরে আসুন,এ ঘরের কক্ষে দুটি "আমি"র স্থান নেই।"

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

-দুটি প্রধান অক্ষর "আমি"-এই চোখ নয়- বরং "দুটি অহংকার" এর জন্য

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

এবং রুমির ঘটনাগুলো হলো আধ্যাত্মিক পথের রূপক

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

সৃষ্টিকর্তার উপস্থিতিতে একটি "আমি"র বেশি কোনো স্থান নেই

and that is the "I" of divinity.

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me

আঁমার প্রিয় কোনো কিছু দ্বারা আমার সন্নিকটে আসে না

than what I have asked them to do."

বরং ঐ কর্ম দ্বারা যা আঁমি পালন করতে বলি"

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

এবং আপনারা যারা কর্মকর্তা নিশ্চয় বুঝতে পারছেন আমি কি বলছি

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

আপনি চান আপনার কর্মচারী তাই করুক যা আপনি তাদের করতে বলছেন

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

যদি তারা তা করে তবে তারা আরো একটু বেশি করতে পাবে

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

এবং সৃষ্টিকর্তা বলেছেন,"আঁমার বান্দারা প্রতিনিয়ত আঁমার সন্নিকটে আসতে থাকে,

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

বেশি কর্ম সাধন দ্বারা যা আঁমি তাদের করতে বলেছি"-

extra credit, we might call it --

"until I love him or love her.

And when I love my servant," God says,

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

ঐ হৃদয় যা দিয়ে ও অনুধাবন করে"

It is this merging of our self with divinity

ইহা স্বর্গীয়তার সহিত আপনসত্তার একাত্ততা

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

ইহাই আমাদের আধ্যাত্মিক পথের এবং সাথে অন্যান্য সকল বিশ্বাসের শিক্ষা ও উদ্দেশ্য ।

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

মুসলিমরা যীশুখ্রিস্টকে সূফীবাদের গুরু মানে,

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

একজন মহান নবী এবং দূত যিনি এসেছিলেন আধ্যাত্মিক পথের গুরুত্ব অনুধাবন করাতে ।

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

যখন তিনি বলেন, " আমি-ই সত্ত্বা, এবং আমি-ই পথ,"

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

so that God's will was manifest through them,

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

এবং তাহারা নিজেদের সত্ত্বা ও নিজেদের অহংকার হতে অভিনয় করেননি ।

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

সহানুভূতি এ পৃথিবীতেই দেয়া হয়েছে, এটা আমাদের মাঝেই আছে ।

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

আর আমাদেরকে যা করতে হবে তা হল আমাদের অহংকারকে পথ থেকে সরাতে হবে,

get our egotism out of the way.

আত্মপ্রাধান্য/আত্মম্ভরিতা কে পথ থেকে দূর করতে হবে ।

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

আমি নিশ্চিন্ত, সম্ভবত আপনারা এখানে সকলে, বা নিশ্চিতভাবে আপনাদের সিংহভাগ

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

অনুধাবন করেছেন যাকে আপনারা আধ্যাত্মিক অভিজ্ঞতা বলতে পারেন,

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

the boundaries of your ego dissolved.

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

একজন যে ঐ জলের ধরা সহ, একজন যে সকল মানুষের সাথে,

one with the Creator --

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

সেই উপহার, যখন কিছুক্ষণের জন্য, তিনি সে সীমানা তুলে নেন

which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"

যেখানে আমরা জোর দিয়ে বার বার বলতে থাকি "আমি, আমি, আমি, আমার, আমার, আমার"

and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,

বরং এর পরিবর্তে রুমির গল্পের সেই মানুষদের মত,

we say, "Oh, this is all you.

আমরা বলি, "ওহে, ইহা শুধু তোমরা ।

This is all you. And this is all us.

তোমরাই সব । এবং ইহা হলাম আমরা ।

And us, and I, and us are all part of you.

O, Creator! O, the Objective! The source of our being

and the end of our journey,

you are also the breaker of our hearts.

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

তুলে ধরতে কতটুকু পর্যন্ত আমরা নিজেদের করুনাময় সত্ত্বা করতে পেরেছি ।"

Our message today, and our purpose today,

আমাদের আজকের বার্তা, এবং আমাদের আজকের উদ্দেশ্য,

and those of you who are here today,

এবং আপনারা যারা আজ এখানে উপস্থিত আছেন,

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

এবং এ সমবেদনার প্রতিনিধি যার উদ্দেশ্য, মনে করিয়ে দেয়া ।

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

কোরআন এ জন্যই সর্বদা আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয়, একে অপরকে মনে করিয়ে দিতে ।

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

কারন সত্যের জ্ঞান আমাদের সকল মানুষের মাঝেই আছে ।

We know it all.

আমরা সবাই তা জানি ।

We have access to it all.

আমাদের সবার এতে অনুপ্রবেশ আছে ।

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

অপরিনতরা হয়ত একে বলেছে "অবচেতন"

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

আমাদের অবচেতনার মাধ্যমে, আপনার স্বপ্নে -

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

কোরআন আমাদের ঘুমন্ত অবস্থাকে বলে "ক্ষুদ্রতর মৃত্যু"

"the temporary death" --

"অস্থায়ী মৃত্যু" -

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

নিদ্রাবস্থায় আমরা স্বপ্ন দেখি, কল্পনা করি,

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

আমাদের অনেকেই আবার নিজেদের শরীর থেকে বাহিরে ভ্রমন করি

and we see wonderful things.

এবং আমরা অনেক সৌন্দর্য দেখি

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

আমরা স্থানের সীমাবদ্ধতা যা আমরা জানি তা থেকেও বাহিরে ভ্রমন করি,

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

এমনকি কালের সীমাবদ্ধতার বাহিরেও যা আমরা জানি ।

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

যাঁহার মূল নাম পরম করুনা প্রদর্শনকারী, পরম করুনাময়

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

ঈশ্বর, খোদা, যে নামেই ডাকতে চান, আল্লাহ, রাম, ওম,

whatever the name might be through which you name

আপনি যে নামেই তাঁকে ডাকেন না কেন

or access the presence of divinity,

বা স্বর্গীয়তার উপস্থিতি উপলব্ধি করেন,

it is the locus of absolute being,

ইহা ই কেন্দ্রবিন্দু পরম সত্তার,

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

পরম ভালবাসার এবং ক্ষমা ও করুনার,

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

এবং পরম জ্ঞান এবং বিজ্ঞতার,

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

যাকে হিন্দুগন বলে "সতচিদানন্দ"।

The language differs,

ভাষা ভিন্ন,

but the objective is the same.

কিন্তু উদ্দেশ্য একই।

Rumi has another story

রুমির আছে ভিন্ন কাহিনী

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

তিনজনকে ঘিরে, একজন তুর্কি, একজন আরব-

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

এবং তৃতীয় বাক্তি আমি ভুলে গিয়েছি, ধরে নিন একজন মালয়

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

একজন আঙ্গুর চাইলেন,একজন, ধরে নিন ইংরেজ-

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

একজন চাইলেন এনেব, এবং একজন চাইলেন গ্রেইপ

And they have a fight and an argument because

এবং তারা মারামারি এবং ঝগড়া করলো কারণ

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

not knowing that the word that they're using

refers to the same reality in different languages.

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

one absolute being by definition,

because absolute is, by definition, single,

There's this absolute concentration of being,

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

চেতনার সম্পূর্ণ কেন্দ্রীকরণ,

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

সজ্ঞানতার, সম্পূর্ণ সঠিক করুনা ও ভালবাসাকে

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

স্বর্গীয়তার মূল উৎস সংজ্ঞায়িত করে

And these should also be

এবং ইহা অবশ্যই

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

মানব হবার মূল উপকরন

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

যা মানবতাকে সংজ্ঞায়িত করে, জীববিজ্ঞানের ভিত্তিতে,

is our physiology,

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

"আমি আদমকে মাটি হইতে গঠন করিয়াছি।

and breathed into him of my spirit,

then, fall in prostration to him."

সুতরাং তাহার অধোমুখে পতিত হও ।"

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

ফেরেশতারা পতিত হয়েছিলেন, তবে মানব শরীরের নিকট নয়,

but before the human soul.

বরং মানব আত্নার নিকট ।

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

কেন? কারন আত্না, মানব আত্না,

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

a piece of the divine soul.

এক স্বর্গীয় আত্নার স্বরূপ ।

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

ইহা বাইবেলের ভাষায়ও প্রকাশিত হয়েছে

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

আমাদেরকে শিখানো হয়েছিল যে আমরা স্বর্গীয়রূপে সৃষ্ট হয়েছিলাম ।

What is the imagery of God?

স্বর্গীয়রূপ কি?

The imagery of God is absolute being,

স্বর্গীয়রূপ হল পরম সত্তা,

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

সম্পূর্ণ সজ্ঞানতা এবং পরিপূর্ণ জ্ঞান ও বিচক্ষণতা

and absolute compassion and love.

এবং পরিপূর্ণ করুনা ও ভালবাসা

And therefore, for us to be human --

এবং, এ কারণে আমাদের মানুষ হবার জন্য

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

বৃহৎস্বার্থে মানুষ হবার জন্য যা বুঝায়,

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

আনন্দ অনুভুতির সাথে মানুষ হবার জন্য যা বুঝায় -

means that we too have to be proper stewards

তা হল আমাদেরকেও প্রকৃত সেবক হতে হবে

of the breath of divinity within us,

আমাদের মধ্যকার বহমান স্বর্গীয় শ্বাস - প্রশ্বাসের,

and seek to perfect within ourselves the attribute of being,

এবং অন্বেষণ করতে হবে আমাদের মধ্যকার সত্তার গুন নিখুঁত করতে,

of being alive, of beingness;

বেঁচে থাকতে, সামগ্রিকতার তরে;

the attribute of wisdom, of consciousness, of awareness;

বিজ্ঞতা, উপলব্ধি, সচেতনতার বৈশিষ্ট্য,

and the attribute of being compassionate and loving beings.

এবং দয়াশীল ও স্নেহশীল সত্ত্বার বৈশিষ্ট্য ।

This is what I understand from my faith tradition,

আমার বিশ্বাসের প্রথা হতে আমি এটাই বুঝি,

and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,

এবং এটাই আমি বুঝি অন্য সকল বিশ্বাসের প্রথা অধ্যয়ন শেষে,

and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,

এবং এই একই মঞ্চে আমাদের সকলকে একত্রে দাঁড়াতে হতে হবে ।

and when we stand on this platform as such,

I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.

We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:

আমরা মানব ইতিহাসের এক পর্যায়ে উপনিত হয়েছি, যেখানে আমাদের আর কোনো উপায় নেই ;

we must, we must lower our egos,

আমাদেরকে অবশ্যই, আমাদের উচিত অহংবোধকে অবনমিত করা,

control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,

অহংকারকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করা, হোক তা বাক্তিগত অহংকার, নিজস্ব্ব অহংকার,

family ego, national ego --

পারিবারিক অহংকার, জাতীয় অহংকার-

and let all be for the glorification of the one.

এবং চলুন সকল কিছু এক এককের উদ্দেশ্যে নিবেদন করি ।
