I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

ข้าพเจ้ากำลังพูดถึงความเมตตาจากมุมมองของชาวมุสลิม

and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of

และบางทีหลายคนก็คิดว่าความเชื่อของข้าพเจ้านั้น

as being one that is grounded in compassion.

The truth of the matter is otherwise.

Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,

and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,

the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"

and who was a worldwide traveler

ซึ่งเป็นนักเดินทางไปทั่วโลก

and translator of many works of literature --

และเป็นผู้แปลวรรณกรรมไว้หลายชิ้น

translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."

ได้แปลไว้ว่า "ในนามของพระเจ้า ผู้ทรงเมตตา ผู้เปี่ยมด้วยความเมตตา"

And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,

และในหลักคำสอนจากกุรอาน ซึ่งสำหรับชาวมุสลิมแล้ว เป็นถ้อยคำที่พระเจ้ากล่าวกับมวลมนุษยชาติ

God says to his prophet Muhammad --

พระเจ้าได้ตรัสกับท่านศาสนฑูตของพระองค์ ท่านมูฮัมหมัด

whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,

ซึ่งเราเชื่อกันว่าเป็นท่านสุดท้าย ในบรรดาองค์ศาสนฑูต

beginning with Adam, including Noah, including Moses, including Abraham,

including Jesus Christ, and ending with Muhammad --

รวมถึงพระเยซูคริสต์ และสิ้นสุดที่ท่านมูฮัมหมัด

that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,

except as a 'rahmah,' except as a source of compassion to humanity."

นอกจากเพื่อเป็นราฮาม เป็นความเมตตาแก่มวลประชาทั้งหลาย"

For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,

สำหรับเราในฐานะมนุษย์คนหนึ่ง และแน่นอนสำหรับเราชาวมุสลิม

whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet

ผู้มีภารกิจและเป้าประสงค์ ในการดำเนินรอยตามองค์ศาสดา

is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.

พึงกระทำตนเยี่ยงองค์ศาสดาให้ดีที่สุด

And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,

ซึ่งองค์ศาสดาได้กล่าวไว้ครั้งหนึ่งว่า

"Adorn yourselves with the attributes of God."

"จงประดับตัวท่านด้วยคุณลักษณะของพระเจ้า"

And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --

และเพราะพระเจ้าเองได้ตรัสไว้ว่าคุณลักษณะ อันสำคัญที่สุดของพระองค์ก็คือ ความเมตตา

in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"

กุรอ่านเองก็กล่าวไว้ว่า "พระเจ้าทรงมีบัญชาแก่พระองค์เองด้วยความเมตตา"

or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --

หรือ "ทรงปกครองพระองค์เองด้วยความเมตตา"

therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,

ฉะนั้น จุดประสงค์และภารกิจของเราคือการเป็นผู้ที่เปี่ยมไปด้วยความเมตตา

activators of compassion, actors of compassion

สร้างความเมตตาให้เกิดขึ้นในใจ, แสดงความเมตตาต่อผู้อื่น

and speakers of compassion and doers of compassion.

พึงพูดกับผู้อื่นด้วยความเมตตา และปฏิบัติต่อผู้อื่นด้วยความเมตตา

That is all well and good,

เหล่านี้ล้วนประเสริฐและดี

but where do we go wrong,

แต่ความผิดพลาดเกิดขึ้นที่ตรงไหน

and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?

และอะไรเป็นเหตุให้โลกขาดความเมตตา

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

เพื่อตอบคำถามนี้ เราพึงพิจารณาถึงมรรคาแห่งจิตวิญญาณ

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

ศาสนาทุกศาสนาล้วนมีสิ่งที่เราเรียกว่า วิถีแห่งโลกภายนอกและวิถีของโลกภายใน

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

หรือวิถีทางวัตถุและวิถีแห่งจิตวิญญาณ

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

วิถีแห่งจิตวิญญาณของมุสลิมนั้นรู้จักกันทั่วไปในชื่อของนิกายซูฟีย์ หรือตะเซาวุฟ ในภาษาอาหรับ

And these doctors or these masters,

บรรดาผู้รู้หรือปรมาจารย์เหล่านี้

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

ปรมาจารย์ทางจิตวิญญาณของซูฟีย์

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

ได้กล่าวถึงคำสอนและตัวอย่างของท่านองค์ศาสดา

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

ซึ่งจะช่วยชี้แนะเราว่าสิ่งใดกันคือบ่อเกิดของปัญหา

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

ในการศึกหนึ่งซึ่งองค์ศาสดาได้ร่วมรบ

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

ท่านกล่าวต่อสานุศิษย์ว่า "เรากลับจากสงครามเล็กน้อยนี้"

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

ไปสู่สงครามอันยิ่งใหญ่ สู่การศึกอันยิ่ง"

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

สานุศิษย์กล่าวว่า "องค์ฑูตแห่งสวรรค์ เราหน่ายการศึกแล้ว

How can we go to a greater battle?"

จะเอากำลังแต่ไหน สู้ศึกอันยิ่ง?"

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

องค์ศาสดาตอบว่า "การศึกนั้นหรือคือการศึกกับตน การศึกต่ออัตตา"

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

ต้นเหตุของปัญหาของมนุษย์ ล้วนเกี่ยวกับการยึดอัตตาเป็นใหญ่ หรือ 'ตัวข้าฯ'

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

ปรมาจารย์ซูฟีย์ผู้โด่งดัง ท่านรูมี ผู้ที่ท่านส่วนใหญ่รู้จักเป็นอย่างดี

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

มีเรื่องเล่าว่าด้วยชายผู้หนึ่ง ซึ่งเดินทางไปยังบ้านของสหาย

and he knocks on the door,

เขาเคาะประตูบ้าน

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

เสียงตอบกลับมาว่า "นั่นใคร?"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

"ฉันเอง" หรือพูดอีกอย่างก็คือ

as we might say in English.

"ข้าฯ" เอง

The voice says, "Go away."

เสียงนั้นว่า "ไปให้พ้น"

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

หลังจากฝึกฝน บำเพ็ญตน แสวงหา และเพียรพยายามอยู่หลายปี

he comes back.

เขาก็กลับมา

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

และด้วยความถ่อมตนกว่าแต่ก่อนนัก เขาเคาะประตูอีกครั้ง

The voice asks, "Who is there?"

เสียงนั้นถามว่า "นั่นใคร"

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

เขาตอบว่า "ก็ท่านไง โอ้ สหายรักของข้า"

The door swings open, and the voice says,

แล้วประตูก็เปิดออก และเสียงนั้นกล่าวว่า

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

"เข้ามาเถิด เพราะว่าในนี้ไม่มีที่พอสำหรับ 'ข้าฯ' ทั้งสอง"

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

ข้าฯ หรืออัตตาทั้งสองนะครับ

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

เรื่องที่ท่านรูมีเล่าไว้ เป็นการอุปมาถึงการเดินทาง ทางจิตวิญญาณนั่นเอง

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

ขณะใดที่พระเจ้าปรากฏ จะไม่เหลือเนื้อที่ให้อัตตาได้อาศัย

and that is the "I" of divinity.

อัตตวาทุปาทานจึงสลาย หลอมรวมเข้ากับสรรพสิ่ง

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

ในหลักคำสอน ซึ่งชาวมุสลิมเรียกว่า ฮะดีษกุดซีย์ นั้น

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

พระเจ้าตรัสว่า "สาวกของเรา" หรือ "สรรพชีวิต สรรพมนุษย์"

does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me

ไม่พึงติดตามเราได้ ด้วยการปฏิบัติอันนอกเหนือไปจาก

than what I have asked them to do."

ที่เราได้พร่ำสอน"

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

และท่านผู้ฟังที่เป็นนายจ้างคงเข้าใจดีว่าหมายถึงอะไร

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

ท่านย่อมอยากให้ลูกจ้างของท่าน ทำในสิ่งที่ท่านสั่งไว้

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

เมื่อทำได้แล้ว จึงค่อยทำสิ่งอื่นนอกจากนั้น

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

แต่อย่าเพิกเฉยในสิ่งที่ท่านได้สั่งไว้

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

และพระเจ้าตรัสว่า "สาวกของเราจะยิ่งใกล้เรามากขึ้นอีก

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

ด้วยการปฏิบัติให้มากขึ้นในสิ่งที่เราสอน"

extra credit, we might call it --

เป็นคะแนนพิเศษ ก็น่าจะเรียกได้

"until I love him or love her.

"จนกว่าเราจะรักเขาหรือเธอ

And when I love my servant," God says,

และเมื่อเรารักสาวกของเราแล้ว" พระเจ้าตรัส

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

เราจะกลายเป็นดวงตาที่เขาหรือเธอใช้ดู

the ears by which he or she listens,

เป็นหูที่เขาหรือเธอใช้ฟัง

the hand by which he or she grasps,

เป็นมือที่เขาหรือเธอใช้ยึดจับ

and the foot by which he or she walks,

และเป็นเท้าที่เขาหรือเธอใช้เดิน

and the heart by which he or she understands."

และเป็นหัวใจที่เขาหรือเธอใช้เข้าใจสรรพสิ่ง

It is this merging of our self with divinity

การหลอมรวมตัวตนเข้ากับความจริงสูงสุดนี้

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

เป็นบทศึกษาและจุดมุ่งหมายของการเดินทางทางจิตวิญญาณของศาสนศรัทธาทั้งมวล

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

ชาวมุสลิมนับถือพระเยซูว่า เป็นปรมาจารย์แห่งซูฟีย์

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

เป็นองค์ศาสดาและผู้นำสาส์น ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุด ผู้เน้นย้ำวิถีแห่งจิตวิญญาณ

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

พระเยซูกล่าวว่า "เราคือพระจิต เราคือวิถีทาง"

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

องค์ศาสดามูฮัมหมัดกล่าวว่า "ผู้ใดเห็นเรา ก็เท่ากับเห็นพระเจ้า"

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

ที่กล่าวเช่นนั้นได้ เพราะองค์ศาสดาคือสื่อของพระเจ้า

they became part of God's team --

เป็นพระจิตของพระเจ้า

so that God's will was manifest through them,

ดังนั้นแล้ว พระประสงค์ของพระเจ้าจึงสำแดงผ่านพวกท่านได้

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

และมิได้กระทำการจากตัวตนหรืออัตตาของพวกท่านเอง

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

ความเมตตาบนโลกนั้นได้ถูกประทานมาให้แล้ว มันอยู่ในตัวเรานี่เอง

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

สิ่งที่เราต้องทำมีเพียงแค่ขจัดอัตตาไปให้พ้นจากวิถีทางของเรา

get our egotism out of the way.

ขจัดการเอาอัตตาเป็นใหญ่ไปให้พ้นจากวิถีทางของเรา

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

ข้าพเจ้าแน่ใจว่า ทุกท่านในที่นี้น่าจะ หรือส่วนใหญ่ของท่านผู้ฟังต้อง

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

เคยประสบสิ่งที่ท่านอาจเรียกว่า ประสบการณ์ทางจิตวิญญาณ

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

ซึ่งเป็นห้วงเวลาหนึ่งในชีวิตของท่าน อาจนานเพียงไม่กี่วินาทีหรือนาที

the boundaries of your ego dissolved.

ที่พรมแดนของอัตตาของท่านได้สลายหายไป

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

และ ณ นาทีนั้นเอง ท่านก็รู้สึกเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันกับจักรวาล

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันกับเหยือกน้ำอันนั้น เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันกับมนุษยชาติ

one with the Creator --

เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันกับพระผู้สร้าง

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

และท่านรู้สึกได้ในการดำรงอยู่ของอำนาจนั้น ถึงความน่าเกรงขาม

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

ถึงความรักอันลึกล้ำที่สุด ความเมตตาและปราณีอันลึกล้ำที่สุด

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

เท่าที่ท่านได้เคยประสบมาในชีวิต

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

นั่นแหละคือช่วงเวลาที่พระเจ้าทรงประทาน เป็นของขวัญแก่เรา

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

ของขวัญที่ ณ ห้วงเวลาหนึ่ง พระองค์ทรงยกพรมแดนนั้น

which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"

ที่ทำให้เราเอาแต่ยืนกรานว่า ฉัน ฉัน ฉัน ข้า ข้า ข้า

and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,

และเปลี่ยนไป เป็นเช่นเดียวกับชายในเรื่องของท่านรูมี

we say, "Oh, this is all you.

เราก็พูดว่า "อ้อ นี่คือท่านทั้งหมดเลย"

This is all you. And this is all us.

นี่คือท่านทั้งหมด และนี่คือเราทั้งหมด

And us, and I, and us are all part of you.

O, Creator! O, the Objective! The source of our being

and the end of our journey,

you are also the breaker of our hearts.

และท่านยังเป็นสหายรักของเรา

You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,

ท่านเป็นเพียงผู้เดียวที่เราควรมุ่งตาม เพื่อจุดประสงค์ของท่านที่เราจะมีชีวิตอยู่

and for whose purpose we shall die,

และเพื่อจุดประสงค์ของท่าน ที่เราจะตาย

and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

เพื่ออธิบายต่อพระเจ้า ว่าเราได้ใช้ชีวิตอย่างมีเมตตามากน้อยปานใด

Our message today, and our purpose today,

สาส์นของเราในวันนี้ และจุดประสงค์ของเราในวันนี้

and those of you who are here today,

และท่านทั้งหลายที่อยู่ที่นี่ในวันนี้

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

และจุดประสงค์ของบัญญัติแห่งความเมตตาอันนี้ ก็คือเพื่อเตือนให้รำลึก

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

ดังที่กุรอานตักเตือนเราอยู่เสมอให้จดจำ และคอยเตือนกันและกันให้รำลึก

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

เพราะว่าความรู้แห่งสัจจะนั้น ล้วนดำรงอยู่ในมนุษย์ทุกคน

We know it all.

เรารู้ทุกอย่าง

We have access to it all.

เราเข้าถึงได้ทุกอย่าง

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

คาร์ล จุงเรียกสิ่งนี้ไว้ว่า จิตใต้สำนึก

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

โดยผ่านจิตใต้สำนึก ภายในความฝันของท่าน

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

ซึ่งกุรอานเรียกว่า สถานะหลับใหลของเรา ความตายขั้นต่ำกว่า

"the temporary death" --

ความตายชั่วขณะ

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

ในขณะหลับใหลนั้น เรามีความฝัน เราเห็นภาพจินตนาการ

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

สำหรับหลายๆคนแล้ว เราเดินทางออกไปแม้แต่นอกร่างกายของเรา

and we see wonderful things.

และเราก็ได้เห็นสิ่งอันแสนวิเศษ

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

เราเดินทางไปไกลเกินขอบเขตของอวกาศที่เรารู้จัก

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

และไกลเกินขอบเขตของเวลาที่เรารู้จัก

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

แต่ทั้งหมดนี้ก็เพื่อให้เราได้สรรเสริญพระนามของ พระผู้ทรงสร้าง

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

ผู้ที่มีพระนามเบื้องต้นว่า ผู้เมตตา ผู้ทรงเปี่ยมเมตตา

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

พระเจ้า บ็อค หรือพระนามใดก็ตาม ที่ท่านจะเรียกขานพระองค์ อัลเลาะห์ ราม โอม

whatever the name might be through which you name

ไม่ว่าพระนามนั้นคืออะไรก็ตามที่ท่านตั้งให้

or access the presence of divinity,

หรือเพื่ออ้างอิงถึงการดำรงอยู่ของวิญญาณศักดิ์สิทธิ์

it is the locus of absolute being,

ล้วนแล้วเป็นแหล่งแห่งสิ่งมีชีวิตสูงสุด

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

ความรักและปราณีและเมตตาอันสูงสุด

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

และความรู้และปัญญาอันสูงสุด

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

สิ่งที่ชาวฮินดูเรียกว่า 'สัตจิตานันทะ'

The language differs,

ภาษาอาจต่างกัน

but the objective is the same.

แต่เป้าประสงค์กลับไม่ต่างกัน

Rumi has another story

ท่านรูมีมีเรื่องอีกเรื่องหนึ่ง

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

เกี่ยวกับคนสามคน ชาวเติร์ก ชาวอาหรับ

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

และคนที่สามซึ่งข้าพเจ้าลืมเสียแล้ว เอาเป็นว่าชาวมาเลย์ก็แล้วกัน

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

คนหนึ่งร้องขอ 'อังกูร์' อีกคน สมมติว่าเป็นคนที่พูดไทยได้แล้วกัน

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

ก็ร้องขอ 'อีเน็บ' และอีกคนก็ร้องขอ "องุ่น"

And they have a fight and an argument because

แล้วทั้งสามก็ทะเลาะถกเถียงกันเพราะว่า

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

ฉันจะเอาองุ่น ฉันจะเอาอีเน็บ ฉันจะเอาอังกูร์

not knowing that the word that they're using

โดยไม่รู้เลยว่าคำที่พวกเขากำลังใช้อยู่นั้น

refers to the same reality in different languages.

ต่างมีความหมายเดียวกันในภาษาที่ต่างกัน

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

มีความจริงสูงสุดได้เพียงหนึ่งเดียวเท่านั้นตามนิยาม

one absolute being by definition,

สิ่งมีชีวิตสูงสุดเพียงหนึ่งเดียว ตามนิยาม

because absolute is, by definition, single,

เพราะคำว่าสูงสุด ตามความหมาย ย่อมมีหนึ่งเดียว

and absolute and singular.

เป็นสิ่งสูงสุด และเป็นเอกพจน์

There's this absolute concentration of being,

มีสิ่งนี้อยู่ซึ่งเป็นจุดศูนย์รวมสูงสุดของสิ่งมีชีวิต

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

จุดศูนย์รวมสูงสุดของจิตสำนึกรู้

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

จิตตระหนักรู้ เป็นแหล่งสูงสุดแห่งความเมตตาและความรัก

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่กำหนดคุณลักษณะเบื้องต้น ของพระผู้ศักดิ์สิทธิ์

And these should also be

และสิ่งนั้นแหละที่ควรเป็น

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

คุณลักษณะเบื้องต้นของความหมาย ของการได้เป็นมนุษย์

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

เพราะว่าสิ่งที่นิยามมนุษย์นั้น ในทางชีววิทยา

is our physiology,

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

แต่พระเจ้าทรงนิยามมนุษย์ด้วยจิตวิญญาณของเรา ด้วยธรรมชาติของเรา

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

และกุรอานกล่าวไว้ว่า พระองค์ตรัสกับบรรดาเทวดาและกล่าวว่า

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

and breathed into him of my spirit,

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

but before the human soul.

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

เพราะอะไรหรือ? ก็เพราะว่าวิญญาณ วิญญาณมนุษย์นั้น

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

มีลมหายใจศักดิ์สิทธิ์สถิตอยู่

a piece of the divine soul.

มีพระวิญญาณศักดิ์สิทธิ์สถิตอยู่

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

เรื่องนี้ก็ถูกเล่าไว้ในคัมภีร์ไบเบิ้ลเช่นกัน

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

ที่กล่าวว่า เราถูกสร้างขึ้นมาตามพระฉายาศักดิ์สิทธิ์

What is the imagery of God?

อะไรคือพระฉายาของพระเจ้า?

The imagery of God is absolute being,

พระฉายาของพระเจ้าคือสิ่งมีชีวิตสูงสุด

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

จิตตระหนักรู้ และความรู้ และปัญญาอันสูงสุด

and absolute compassion and love.

และเป็นความเมตตาและความรักอันสูงสุด

And therefore, for us to be human --

และ ฉะนั้นแล้ว หากเราจะเป็นมนุษย์

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

and let all be for the glorification of the one.
