I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,

and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of

as being one that is grounded in compassion.

The truth of the matter is otherwise.

Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,

and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,

the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"

or, as Sir Richard Burton --

and who was a worldwide traveler

and translator of many works of literature --

translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."

מתרגם זאת "בשם אללה מלא החמלה והרחמן."

And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,

וכמאמר הקוראן, שלמוסלמים מייצג את דבר האלוהים לאנושות,

God says to his prophet Muhammad --

אלוהים אומר לנביאו מוחמד,

whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,

שלפי אמונתנו הינו האחרון בשרשרת נביאים,

beginning with Adam, including Noah, including Moses, including Abraham,

שראשיתה באדם, המשכה בנוח, משה, אברהם,

including Jesus Christ, and ending with Muhammad --

ישו הנוצרי וסופה במוחמד,

that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,

הוא אומר, "לא שלחנו אותך, הו מוחמד,

except as a 'rahmah,' except as a source of compassion to humanity."

אלא רק כדי שתהיה רחמן ומקור של חמלה לאנושות."

For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,

ועבורנו בני האדם, ובוודאי שעבורנו המוסלמים,

whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet

ששליחותנו וייעודנו, כהולכים בדרכו של הנביא,

is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.

And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,

והנביא, באחת מאימרותיו, אמר,

"Adorn yourselves with the attributes of God."

"קשטו עצמכם בסגולותיו של האל."

And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --

וכיוון שאלוהים עצמו אמר שסגולתו העיקרית היא החמלה,

in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"

ולמעשה, הקוראן אומר, "אלוהים גזר על עצמו חמלה,"

or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --

או, "השליט על עצמו חמלה."

therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,

כך שמטרתנו וייעודנו צריכות להיות הפיכתנו למקורות חמלה,

activators of compassion, actors of compassion

ליוצרי חמלה, לנושאי חמלה,

and speakers of compassion and doers of compassion.

That is all well and good,

but where do we go wrong,

and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?

For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.

In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,

or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.

The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.

דרכו האזוטרית של האיסלם ידועה יותר כ"סופיזם", או "תסאווף" בערבית.

And these doctors or these masters,

והרופאים או המורים הללו,

these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,

המורים הרוחניים האלו של המסורת הסופית,

refer to teachings and examples of our prophet

מתייחסים ללימודים ולמופתים של נביאנו,

that teach us where the source of our problems lies.

שמלמדים אותנו היכן טמון מקור בעיותינו.

In one of the battles that the prophet waged,

באחד הקרבות שניהל הנביא,

he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war

הוא אמר לתלמידיו, "אנחנו חוזרים מהמלחמה החשובה פחות

to the greater war, to the greater battle."

למלחמה החשובה יותר, לקרב הגדול יותר."

And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.

והם אמרו, "שליח האל, עייפנו מן הקרב.

How can we go to a greater battle?"

כיצד זה נוכל לצאת לקרב גדול יותר?"

He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."

ענה, "זהו הקרב של העצמי, הקרב של האגו."

The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."

בעיותיו של האדם קשורות באגואיזם, ב"אני".

The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,

למורה הסופיזם המפורסם רומי, שמוכר היטב למרביתכם,

has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,

יש סיפור שבו הוא מדבר על אדם שהולך לבית חברו

and he knocks on the door,

ומקיש על הדלת,

and a voice answers, "Who's there?"

וקול עונה, "מי שם?"

"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"

"זה אני," או נכון יותר מבחינה תחבירית, "זהו אנוכי,"

as we might say in English.

כמו שהיינו אומרים באנגלית.

The voice says, "Go away."

והקול אומר, "לך מכאן."

After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,

אחרי שנים רבות של הכשרה, רכישת משמעת, חיפוש ומאבק,

he comes back.

הוא חוזר,

With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.

ובענווה רבה יותר, מקיש שוב על הדלת.

The voice asks, "Who is there?"

הקול שואל, "מי שם?"

He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."

והוא עונה, "אתה הוא, הו שובר לבבות."

The door swings open, and the voice says,

הדלת נפתחת לרווחה, והקול אומר,

"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"

"היכנס, כי אין מקום בבית זה לשני 'אני',

-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."

שני 'עצמי', שני 'אגו'.

And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.

והסיפורים של רומי הם דימויים של הדרך הרוחנית.

In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"

בנוכחות האל, אין מקום ליותר מ'אני' אחד,

and that is the "I" of divinity.

וזהו ה'אני' של האלוהות.

In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --

באחת ההלכות מהמסורת שלנו, בשם "חדית' קודסי",

God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,

אלוהים אומר, "המשרת שלי", או "יצור שלי, יצור אנושי שלי,

does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me

אינו קרב אלי עם דבר שיקר לי יותר

than what I have asked them to do."

מאשר מה שביקשתיו לעשות."

And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.

והמעסיקים שביניכם יודעים בדיוק למה כוונתי.

You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,

אתם רוצים שעובדיכם יעשו מה שביקשתם מהם לעשות,

and if they've done that, then they can do extra.

ואם עשו כן, הם יכולים לעשות יותר,

But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.

אך אל תתעלמו ממה שביקשתם מהם לעשות.

"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,

ואלוהים אומר, "משרתי קרב אלי יותר,

by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --

בעשותו יותר ממה שביקשתיו לעשות,"

extra credit, we might call it --

נקודות זכות נוספות, היינו מכנים זאת,

"until I love him or love her.

"עד שאוהב אותו או אותה.

And when I love my servant," God says,

וכשאני אוהב את משרתי", אלוהים אומר,

"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,

"אני הופך לעיניים שבעזרתן הוא או היא רואים,

the ears by which he or she listens,

לאוזניים שבעזרתן הוא או היא מקשיבים,

the hand by which he or she grasps,

וליד שבעזרתה הוא או היא אוחזים,

and the foot by which he or she walks,

ולרגל שבעזרתה הוא או היא הולכים,

and the heart by which he or she understands."

וללב שבעזרתו הוא או היא מבינים."

It is this merging of our self with divinity

זוהי ההתמזגות של העצמי עם האלוהי

that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.

והלקח והמטרה של דרכנו הרוחנית ושל כל מסורות הדת שלנו.

Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,

המוסלמים רואים בישו את אדון הסופיזם,

the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.

הנביא והשליח הגדול ביותר שבא להדגיש את הדרך הרוחנית.

When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"

באומרו, "אני הוא הרוח, ואני היא הדרך,"

and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"

כשהנביא מוחמד אומר, "מי שראה אותי ראה את האל,"

it is because they became so much an instrument of God,

הרי זה מפני שהם הפכו למכשיריו של האל עד כדי כך,

they became part of God's team --

שהם נעשו לחלק מהבל פיו של האל,

so that God's will was manifest through them,

כדי שרצון האל יתגשם דרכם

and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.

ולא כמי שפועלים מטעם עצמם או האגו שלהם.

Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.

החמלה עלי אדמות כבר ניתנה, היא בתוכנו.

All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,

כל שעלינו לעשות הוא לסלק את האגו מעל דרכנו,

get our egotism out of the way.

לסלק את האנוכיות מן הדרך.

I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,

בטוחני שכולכם, או ודאי שרובכם המוחלט,

have had what you might call a spiritual experience,

חוו מה שמכונה 'חוויה רוחנית',

a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,

רגע בחיים, שבו לכמה שניות, אולי דקה,

the boundaries of your ego dissolved.

גבולות האגו התמוססו.

And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --

ובאותו רגע חשתם מאוחדים עם היקום,

one with that jug of water, one with every human being,

מאוחדים עם כד המים הזה, מאוחדים עם כל האדם,

one with the Creator --

מאוחדים עם הבורא,

and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,

וחשתם בנוכחות הכוח, היראה,

of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy

של האהבה ותחושת החמלה והרחמים העמוקות ביותר

that you have ever experienced in your lives.

שאי-פעם חשתם בחייכם.

That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --

רגע זה הוא מתנתו של האל לנו,

a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary

מתנה שבה הוא מסלק לרגע את הגבול

which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"

שגורם לנו להתעקש על 'אני', 'אני', 'אני', 'עצמי', 'עצמי', 'עצמי',

and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,

we say, "Oh, this is all you.

This is all you. And this is all us.

And us, and I, and us are all part of you.

O, Creator! O, the Objective! The source of our being

and the end of our journey,

וקץ מסענו.

you are also the breaker of our hearts.

אתה הוא גם שובר לבבותינו.

You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,

ואליך על כולנו להתכוון, למען מטרותיך אנו חיים,

and for whose purpose we shall die,

למען מטרותיך נמות,

and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again

ולמען מטרותיך עוד נשוב ונעלה מן המתים

to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."

להראות לאל עד כמה היינו יצורים מלאי חמלה.

Our message today, and our purpose today,

היום, המסר שלנו והמטרה שלנו,

and those of you who are here today,

ושל אלו מכם שנמצאים כאן היום,

and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.

והמטרה של הצהרת חמלה זו, היא להזכיר.

For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,

כי הקוראן תמיד דוחק בנו לזכור, להזכיר זה לזה,

because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.

שהרי ידע האמת טמון בכל אדם ואדם.

We know it all.

כולנו מכירים אותה.

We have access to it all.

לכולנו יש גישה אליה.

Jung may have called it "the subconscious."

יונג היה מכנה זאת 'תת-מודע'.

Through our subconscious, in your dreams --

דרך תת-המודע שלנו, בחלומותיכם,

the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"

שאותם מכנה הקוראן, 'מצב השינה' שלנו, 'המוות הנחות',

"the temporary death" --

המוות הזמני.

in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,

במצב השינה שלנו יש לנו חלומות, יש לנו חזיונות,

we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,

רבים מאיתנו אף חורגים מגופינו,

and we see wonderful things.

ורואים דברים נפלאים.

We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,

אנחנו נעים אל מעבר לגבולות המרחב המוכר לנו,

and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.

ומעבר לגבולות הזמן המוכר לנו.

But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator

אבל כל זה כדי שנהלל את שם הבורא

whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.

ששמו הראשון הוא הרחמן, הרחום.

God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,

אלוהים, בודהה, בכל שם שתכנו אותו: אללה, רם, אום,

whatever the name might be through which you name

יהא אשר יהא השם שתעניקו לו

or access the presence of divinity,

או שתתקרבו בעזרתו אל נוכחות האלוהות,

it is the locus of absolute being,

זהו מקום של ישות מוחלטת,

absolute love and mercy and compassion,

אהבה, רחמים וחמלה מוחלטות,

and absolute knowledge and wisdom,

וגם ידע וחוכמה מוחלטות,

what Hindus call "satchidananda."

מה שההינדים מכנים "סאצ'ידאנאנדה".

The language differs,

השפות שונות,

but the objective is the same.

אבל המטרה היא אחת.

Rumi has another story

לרומי יש סיפור נוסף

about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --

על שלושה אנשים. טורקי, ערבי,

and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.

שכחתי מי השלישי, אך לצורך העניין הוא עשוי להיות מלאי,

One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --

האחד מבקש "אנגור", אחד, נניח שהאנגלי,

one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.

מבקש "ענב", והשלישי מבקש "ענבים".

And they have a fight and an argument because

והם רבים ומתווכחים,

-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --

"אני רוצה ענבים, אני רוצה ענב, אני רוצה אנגור,"

not knowing that the word that they're using

מבלי לדעת שהמלים השונות בהן הם משתמשים

refers to the same reality in different languages.

מתייחסות בשפות שונות לאותה הממשות.

There's only one absolute reality by definition,

מעצם הגדרתה, יש רק ממשות מוחלטת אחת,

one absolute being by definition,

ישות מוחלטת אחת מעצם הגדרתה,

because absolute is, by definition, single,

כי מעצם הגדרתו, המוחלט הוא אחד ויחיד,

and absolute and singular.

ומוחלט וייחודי.

There's this absolute concentration of being,

ישנה ההווייה המרוכזת והמוחלטת,

the absolute concentration of consciousness,

ריכוז המודעות המוחלט,

awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love

המודעות, אתר מוחלט של חמלה ואהבה

that defines the primary attributes of divinity.

שמגדיר את סגולותיה העיקריות של האלוהות.

And these should also be

ואלה צריכות להיות גם

the primary attributes of what it means to be human.

הסגולות העיקריות של משמעות היות אנושי.

For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,

כי מה שמגדיר את האנושיות, אולי מההיבט הביולוגי,

is our physiology,

הוא הפיזיולוגיה שלנו,

but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.

אך האל מגדיר את האנושיות על פי רוחניותנו וטבענו.

And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,

ובקוראן כתוב שהוא מדבר אל המלאכים ואומר,

"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,

"והיה בסיימי ליצור את האדם מחומר,

and breathed into him of my spirit,

ונתתי בו רוח מאפי,

then, fall in prostration to him."

נפלתי אפיים לפניו."

The angels prostrate, not before the human body,

המלאכים השתטחו, ולא לפני הגוף האנושי,

but before the human soul.

אלא לפני הנשמה האנושית.

Why? Because the soul, the human soul,

מדוע? כי הנשמה, הנשמה האנושית,

embodies a piece of the divine breath,

מגלמת משהו מהנשימה האלוהית,

a piece of the divine soul.

משהו מהנשמה האלוהית.

This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary

דבר זה מתבטא גם באוצר המלים התנ"כי

when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.

שבו מלמדים אותנו כי נוצרנו בצלם האל.

What is the imagery of God?

מהו צלם האל?

The imagery of God is absolute being,

צלם האל הינו הווייה מוחלטת,

absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom

מודעות, ידיעה וחוכמה מוחלטת

and absolute compassion and love.

וחמלה ואהבה מוחלטות.

And therefore, for us to be human --

כך שמבחינתנו, להיות אנושיים,

in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,

במובן הנעלה ביותר של משמעות היות אנושי

in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --

במובן המאושר ביותר של משמעות היות אנושי,

means that we too have to be proper stewards

משמעו שגם עלינו מוטל להיות שומרים נאמנים

of the breath of divinity within us,

של רוח האל שבתוכנו,

and seek to perfect within ourselves the attribute of being,

ולשאוף להביא לכלל שלמות את סגולת ההווייה שבתוככנו,

of being alive, of beingness;

של היות חי, של היות,

the attribute of wisdom, of consciousness, of awareness;

את סגולת החוכמה, המודעות והערנות,

and the attribute of being compassionate and loving beings.

ואת סגולת היות יצורים אוהבים ובעלי חמלה.

This is what I understand from my faith tradition,

זה מה שאני מבין ממסורתי הדתית,

and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,

וזה מה שאני מבין ממחקרי במסורות דת אחרות,

and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,

וזה צריך להיות הבסיס המשותף של כולנו,

and when we stand on this platform as such,

I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.

And I believe, personally, that we're on the verge

and that, with the presence and help of people like you here,

we can bring about the prophecy of Isaiah.

For he foretold of a period

שדיבר על בואו של עידן

when people shall transform their swords into plowshares

שבו אנשים יכתתו חרבותם לאתים

and will not learn war or make war anymore.

ולא עוד ילמדו או יעשו מלחמה,

We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:

הגענו לשלב בהיסטוריה האנושית שלא נותרה לנו ברירה.

we must, we must lower our egos,

אנו חייבים, מוכרחים, להנמיך את האגו שלנו,

control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,

להשתלט עליו, בין אם זה אגו אישי,

family ego, national ego --

משפחתי או לאומי,

and let all be for the glorification of the one.

ולהקדיש הכל למען תהילת היחיד.
