Probably a lot of you know the story of the two salesmen

ربما سمع الكثير منكم بقصة بائِعَي الأحذية

who went down to Africa in the 1900s.

They were sent down to find if there was any opportunity

لقد أُرسلا ليكتشفا ما إذا كان هناك أية إمكانية

for selling shoes,

and they wrote telegrams back to Manchester.

And one of them wrote,

"Situation hopeless. Stop. They don't wear shoes."

And the other one wrote,

بينما كتب الآخر " إنها لفرصة عظيمة

"Glorious opportunity. They don't have any shoes yet."

ليس لديهم أية أحذية بعد !"

Now, there's a similar situation in the classical music world,

والآن هناك وضع مشابه في عالم الموسيقى الكلاسيكية

because there are some people who think that classical music is dying.

لان هناك من يظن أن ..

أن الموسيقى الكلاسيكية في سبيلها الى الإضمحلال

And there are some of us who think you ain't seen nothing yet.

وهنالك آخرون يظنون أنها قد بدأت للتو ..وأننا لم نرى شيئاً بعد ..

And rather than go into statistics and trends,

وبدلا من الذهاب الى الارقام والمؤشرات

and tell you about all the orchestras that are closing,

وأخبركم عن عدد " الفرق الموسيقية " التي تُغلق

and the record companies that are folding,

أو عدد شركات التسجيل التي تُغلق أبوابها

I thought we should do an experiment tonight.

أضن انه يجب أن أقوم بليلة تجريبية - تجربة ..

Actually, it's not really an experiment, because I know the outcome.

But it's like an experiment.

Now, before we start --

Before we start, I need to do two things.

قبل أن نبدأ هناك أمرين أريدهما ..

One is I want to remind you of what a seven-year-old child

أولا أن أذكركم كيف يبدو طفل عمره 7 سنوات

sounds like when he plays the piano.

وهو يعزف البيانو ..

Maybe you have this child at home.

ربما لديكم هذا الطفل في منزلكم ..

He sounds something like this.

وهو يبدو كهذا ..

I see some of you recognize this child.

أرى أن بعضكم قد ميز هذا الطفل ..

Now, if he practices for a year and takes lessons, he's now eight

and he sounds like this.

سيبدو هكذا ..

He practices for another year and takes lessons -- he's nine.

ثم ان استمر في التعلم لسنة مقبلة .. وغدا ابن تاسعة

Then he practices for another year and takes lessons -- now he's 10.

ثم استمر في التعلم وأخذ الدورس وهو الآن ابن 10 سنوات

At that point, they usually give up.

وعادة في هذا الوقت يستسلم الجميع

Now, if you'd waited for one more year, you would have heard this.

Now, what happened was not maybe what you thought,

which is, he suddenly became passionate, engaged,

involved, got a new teacher, he hit puberty, or whatever it is.

What actually happened was the impulses were reduced.

You see, the first time, he was playing with an impulse on every note.

And the second, with an impulse every other note.

في الثانية كان يتحرك مرة ويتوقف مرة أخرى

You can see it by looking at my head.

The nine-year-old put an impulse on every four notes.

I don't know how we got into this position.

أعلم , أنا لاأعلم كيف وصلنا الى هذا الشيء .

I didn't say, "I'm going to move my shoulder over, move my body."

No, the music pushed me over,

which is why I call it one-buttock playing.

وأدعو هذا العزف " عزف الردف الواحد "

It can be the other buttock.

ويمكن أن يكون " الردف الآخر "

You know, a gentleman was once watching a presentation I was doing,

أتعلمون .. رجل محترم كان يشاهد أحد عروضي ذات مرة

عندما كنت أعمل مع عازف بيانو شاب ..

when I was working with a young pianist.

وقد كان رئيساً لاحد الشركات في أوهايو ..

He was the president of a corporation in Ohio.

وأنا كنت أعمل مع هذا العازف الشاب

I was working with this young pianist, and said,

"The trouble with you is you're a two-buttock player.

وقلت له " اتعلم أن مشكلتك أنك تعزف بكلا أردافك "

" يجب أن تكون عازف بردف واحد "

You should be a one-buttock player."

I moved his body while he was playing.

وقد حركت جسده هكذا عندما كان يعزف ..

And suddenly, the music took off. It took flight.

وفجأة انطلقت الموسيقى .. وأقلعت .

The audience gasped when they heard the difference.

وقد تلهف المستمعون حينما ميزوا الفرق ..

Then I got a letter from this gentleman.

ومن ثم وصلتني رسالة من ذلك الرجل المحترم ..

He said, "I was so moved.

يقول فيها " لقد تأثرت ..

وقد عدت إلى شركتي وحولتها بأكملها ...

I went back and I transformed my entire company

into a one-buttock company."

إلى شركة بردف واحد "

Now, the other thing I wanted to do is to tell you about you.

والآن الشيء الثاني الذي أريد أن أخبركم إياه هو عنكم أنتم

هنا 1600 شخص على ما أعتقد

There are 1,600 people, I believe.

My estimation is that probably 45 of you

وتوقعاتي أن هنالك 45 شخصاً هنا ...

are absolutely passionate about classical music.

مولَعون تماما بالموسيقى الكلاسيكية

You adore classical music. Your FM is always on that classical dial.

فأنتم- 45 شخصاً - تعشقون الموسيقى الكلاسيكية .. فالراديو دائما يذيعها..

You have CDs in your car, and you go to the symphony,

ولديكم أقرص ليزرية في سياراتكم وتذهبون لحضور السمفونيات ..

your children are playing instruments.

وأولادكم يعزفون الآلات

ولايمكنكم تخيل حياتكم بدون الموسيقى الكلاسيكية ..

You can't imagine your life without classical music.

That's the first group, quite small.

هذه المجموعة الأولى : انها مجموعة صغيرة

Then there's another bigger group.

وهناك مجموعة أُخرى , مجموعة أكبر ...

The people who don't mind classical music.

هؤلاء هم الأشخاص اللذي لايمانعون االموسيقى الكلاسيكة

(Laughter)

You know, you've come home from a long day,

كما تعلمون عندما تعودون من يوم عمل طويل ..

and you take a glass of wine, and you put your feet up.

وتأخذون كأساً من النبيذ وتمددون أرجلكم ..

A little Vivaldi in the background doesn't do any harm.

فقليلاً من معزوفات " فيلفالدي " لن تضر أحد .

That's the second group.

هذه المجموعة الثانية

Now comes the third group:

الآن لنأتي إلى المجموعة الثالثة ..

people who never listen to classical music.

وهي مجموعة الأشخاص اللذي لايستمعون إلى الموسيقى الكلاسيكية على الإطلاق

فهي ببساطة ليست جزءا من حياتهم

It's just simply not part of your life.

You might hear it like second-hand smoke at the airport ...

حيث يمكن سماعها فقط في غرف التدخين في المطار ولكن ..

( ضحك )

(Laughter)

-- and maybe a little bit of a march from "Aida"

أو ربما عندما من مسيرة "مخيم عايدة "

عندما تمر بمركز المدينة , ولكن فيما عدا هذا لا تستمعون إليها

when you come into the hall.

But otherwise, you never hear it.

That's probably the largest group.

وهذه على الأغلب هي المجموعة الأكبر على الاطلاق

And then there's a very small group.

These are the people who think they're tone-deaf.

هؤلاء الذين يظنون أنهم لايملكون " أُذناً موسيقية "

Amazing number of people think they're tone-deaf.

Actually, I hear a lot, "My husband is tone-deaf."

في الواقع أسمع كثيراً عبارة " زوجي لا يملك أُذناً موسيقية "

Actually, you cannot be tone-deaf.

في الواقع لايمكن أن لا تملك " أُذناً موسيقية " لا أحد كذلك

Nobody is tone-deaf.

فأن كنت لاتملكها فلن تستطيع من تغير عيار السرعة ..

If you were tone-deaf, you couldn't change the gears

on your car, in a stick shift car.

في سيارتك ..بواسطة عصى تغير السرعة

You couldn't tell the difference between

حتى لن تستطيع تميز الفرق

somebody from Texas and somebody from Rome.

بين شخص من تكساس .. و آخر من روما

وعلى الهاتف , الهاتف , إذا إتصلت بك والدتك ..

And the telephone. The telephone.

If your mother calls

on the miserable telephone, she calls and says, "Hello,"

على الهاتف وقالت " مرحباً "

you not only know who it is, you know what mood she's in.

فأنت لن تميز مين يحادثك فحسب .. بل ستعلم كيف مزاجها أيضاً

You have a fantastic ear. Everybody has a fantastic ear.

فأنت تملك أُذناً رائعة .. الجميع يملكها ..

So nobody is tone-deaf.

لايوجد أحدٌ لايملك أُذناً موسيقية

But I tell you what.

ولكن سوف أخبركم شيئاً .. إن هذا لاينسحب .

It doesn't work for me to go on with this thing,

with such a wide gulf between those who understand,

على الفارق الكبير بين هؤلاء الذي يفهمون ..

love and are passionate about classical music,

يحبون ويهيمون بالموسيقى الكلاسيكية ..

وأولئك اللذين لا علاقة لهم بها على الاطلاق

and those who have no relationship to it at all.

The tone-deaf people, they're no longer here.

إذاً لم يعد هنا من لايملك أُذناً موسيقية ..

ولكن ورغم ذلك فبين الفئات الثلاث التي ذكرنا يوجد فارق كبير

But even between those three categories,

it's too wide a gulf.

So I'm not going to go on until every single person in this room,

لذا لن أترككم حتى كل فرد في هذه الغرفة

وفي الغرف السفلية .. وفي قاعة آسبن وكل شخص يشاهد الآن

downstairs and in Aspen, and everybody else looking,

will come to love and understand classical music.

يفهم ويحب الموسيقى الكلاسيكة .

لذا هذا ما سنقوم به .

So that's what we're going to do.

Now, you notice that there is not the slightest doubt in my mind

الآن كما ترون فانه لايوجد لدي أدنى شك أني ..

that this is going to work, if you look at my face, right?

سأنجح في هذا إن نظرتم إلى وجهي . أليس كذلك ؟

It's one of the characteristics of a leader that he not doubt

إن احدى صفات القائد انه لا يملك أي شك

for one moment the capacity of the people he's leading

ولا للحظة واحد بقدرة الأشخاص الذين يقودهم

to realize whatever he's dreaming.

لكي يحقق الذي يحلم به

تصورا ان قال " مارتن لوثر كينج " , " أنا أملكُ حلماً "

Imagine if Martin Luther King had said, "I have a dream.

Of course, I'm not sure they'll be up to it."

ولكن بالطبع " لست متأكداً من أنكم قادرون عليه "

All right. So I'm going to take a piece of Chopin.

حسناً سوف أأخذ مقطوعة من معزوفات " شوبان "

This is a beautiful prelude by Chopin.

هذه مقدمة رائعة ل " شوبان " وبعضكم يميزها

Some of you will know it.

هل تعلمون ماذا أظن أنه حدث في هذه الغرفة ؟

Do you know what I think probably happened here?

When I started, you thought, "How beautiful that sounds."

"I don't think we should go to the same place

It's funny, isn't it?

It's funny how those thoughts kind of waft into your head.

And of course --

Of course, if the piece is long and you've had a long day,

you might actually drift off.

Then your companion will dig you in the ribs

حتى يأتي شريكك وينخزك ليوقظك ..

and say, "Wake up! It's culture!" And then you feel even worse.

ويقول " إستيقظ ! انها ثقافة " وسيغدو يومك أسوأ

ولكن هل خطر على بالك أن السبب الذي يجعلنا نصاب بالنعاس

But has it ever occurred to you that the reason you feel sleepy

in classical music is not because of you, but because of us?

مع الموسيقى الكلاسيكية ليس سببه أنت بل سببه نحن ؟

Did anybody think while I was playing,

هل فكر أحدكم لماذا عندما كنت أعزف

"Why is he using so many impulses?"

" لماذا يومىء برأسه كل هذا ؟ "

If I'd done this with my head you certainly would have thought it.

إذا قمت بهذا برأسي سوف تفكرون بهذا بالتأكيد

And for the rest of your life, every time you hear classical music,

you'll always be able to know if you hear those impulses.

So let's see what's really going on here.

لدينا " ب " . هذه " ب " والنوتة التالية هي " س "

We have a B. This is a B.

The next note is a C.

And the job of the C is to make the B sad.

وظيفة " س " هي جعل " ب " تبدو حزينة . وهي كذلك . أليس كذلك ؟

And it does, doesn't it?

Composers know that.

المؤلفون الموسيقيون يعلمون هذا .. فإذا أرادوا موسيقى حزينة

If they want sad music, they just play those two notes.

But basically, it's just a B, with four sads.

Now, it goes down to A.

Everybody knows, who's expecting that E.

Chopin didn't want to reach the E there,

because what will have happened?

It will be over, like Hamlet. Do you remember?

هل تتذكرون هاملت ؟ المقطع الأول المشهد الثالث

Act One, scene three,

he finds out his uncle killed his father.

عندما يكتشف أن عمه قتل والده

أتذكرون كيف كان يذهب إلى عمه

He keeps on going up to his uncle and almost killing him.

ويوشك على قتله ثم يتراجع في اللحظة الأخيرة

ثم يذهب ويوشك على قتله مرة أخرى

And then he backs away, he goes up to him again, almost kills him.

وكان يظن المراقبون اللذين يجلسون في الصفوف يتابعون

The critics sitting in the back row there,

ويقولون في نفسهم " هاملت رجل متردد "

they have to have an opinion, so they say, "Hamlet is a procrastinator."

( ضحك )

أو يقولون " هاملت لديه عقدة نفسية معقدة "

Or they say, "Hamlet has an Oedipus complex."

No, otherwise the play would be over, stupid.

لا . فإن قام بقتله سوف تنتهي المسرحية أيها الأغبياء !

لهذا وضع شكسبير كل هذه التعقيدات في هاملت

That's why Shakespeare puts all that stuff in Hamlet --

Ophelia going mad, the play within the play,

كما تعلمون فقد جُنت " أوليفيا " في المسرحية

and Yorick's skull, and the gravediggers.

That's in order to delay --

كل هذا هدف التأخير حتى الفصل الخامس حين يقتله

until Act Five, he can kill him.

It's the same with the Chopin.

He's just about to reach the E,

and he says, "Oops, better go back up and do it again."

ثم يقول في نفسه " أوبس , الأفضل أن أعود إلى الأعلى - في السلم الموسيقي - لأقوم بذلك مرة أخرى "

لذا يقوم بذلك مرة أخرى

So he does it again.

Now, he gets excited.

That's excitement, don't worry about it.

ليس عليكم أن تقلقوا بشأن هذا .

Now, he gets to F-sharp, and finally he goes down to E,

الآن هو يصل الى " ف " الحادة ثم يصل أخيراً إلى " ي "

ولكن هذا هو التناغم الخاطىء .. لان التناغم الذي يبحث عنه

but it's the wrong chord --

because the chord he's looking for is this one,

and instead he does ...

الآن نحن ندعو هذا " الايقاع بالخدعة " لانه يخدعنا

Now, we call that a deceptive cadence,

because it deceives us.

I tell my students, "If you have a deceptive cadence,

وانا اخبر طلابي دوما " ان كان لديك خدعة كتلك ..

إحرص على رفع حاجبيك حتى يتبين الجميع ذلك "

raise your eyebrows, and everybody will know."

Right.

حسناً . هو يصل إلى " ي " ولكن ليس هذا التناغم الذي يبحث عنه

He gets to E, but it's the wrong chord.

Now, he tries E again.

That chord doesn't work.

Now, he tries the E again. That chord doesn't work.

And then finally ...

هناك رجلٌ محترم في المقدمة قال " ممم "

There was a gentleman in the front row who went, "Mmm."

(Laughter)

It's the same gesture he makes when he comes home

انه نفس التعبير الذي يقوم به عندما يصل الى منزله

بعد يوم طويل من العمل , بعد أن يغلق سيارته ويقول ..

after a long day, turns off the key in his car and says,

"Aah, I'm home."

" آه , أنا في المنزل " لاننا نعلم جميعاً أين المنزل هو ..

Because we all know where home is.

So this is a piece which goes from away to home.

لذا في المعزوفة السابقة هي التي تأخذك بعيداً إلى المنزل

I'm going to play it all the way through and you're going to follow.

وسوف أقوم بعزفها طيلة الوقت ..

وأنتم سوف تتابعون التناغم " ب , س , ب , س , ب , س --

B, C, B, C, B, C, B --

down to A, down to G, down to F.

نزولا إلى " أ " ثم إلى " ج " ثم إلى " ف "

Almost goes to E, but otherwise the play would be over.

حتى يكاد يصل إلى " ي " , ولكنه لايفعل لكي لاتنتهي المعزوفة ..

He goes back up to B, he gets very excited.

ثم يصعد مرة أخرى الى " ب " ويزداد حماسة ويذهب الى " ف " الحادة ثم إلى "ي"

Goes to F-sharp. Goes to E.

انه التناغم الخاطىء.انه التناغم الخاطىء.انه التناغم الخاطىء

It's the wrong chord. It's the wrong chord.

And finally goes to E, and it's home.

وأخيراً يذهب إلى " ي " , وهو في منزله الأن

And what you're going to see is one-buttock playing.

والذي سوف ترونه الأن هو عزف بردف واحد

Because for me, to join the B to the E,

لانه بالنسبة لي لكي أصل من " ب " إلى " ي "

I have to stop thinking about every single note along the way,

and start thinking about the long, long line from B to E.

You know, we were just in South Africa, and you can't go to South Africa

أتعلمون لقد كنا في جنوب أفريقيا , ولايمكنك الذهاب الى جنوب أفريقا ..

دون أن تفكر في السنوات ال 27 التي قضاها مانديلا في السجن

without thinking of Mandela in jail for 27 years.

What was he thinking about? Lunch?

مالذي كان يفكر آنذاك ؟ أبالغداء ؟

No, he was thinking about the vision for South Africa

لا , بل كان يفكر برؤية لجنوب أفريقيا ..

and for human beings.

وللبشرية جمعاء .. هذا ما أبقاه

This is about vision. This is about the long line.

هذه هي الرؤية .. أنها عن النظرة الأوسع والأشمل

Like the bird who flies over the field

مثل الطائر الذي يحلق فوق الحقول ..

and doesn't care about the fences underneath, all right?

فهو لا يفكر بالحواجز أسفل منه , صحيح ؟

So now, you're going to follow the line all the way from B to E.

لذا عليكم الآن أن تسيروا مع النوتة حتى النهاية من " ب " إلى " ي"

And I've one last request before I play this piece all the way through.

ولدي طلب أخير قبل ان أعزف هذه المعزوفة

Would you think of somebody who you adore,

who's no longer there?

كجدتكم المحبوبة , أحدٌ تعشقونه

A beloved grandmother, a lover --

somebody in your life who you love with all your heart,

ولكن هذا الشخص لم يعد موجوداً بقربكم ..

but that person is no longer with you.

Bring that person into your mind,

and at the same time,

Now, you may be wondering --

You may be wondering why I'm clapping.

Well, I did this at a school in Boston

حسناً , لقد قمت بهذا في مدرسة في بوسطن

with about 70 seventh graders, 12-year-olds.

مع 70 طالب من الصف السابع أبناء 12 عاماً

I did exactly what I did with you,

وقد قمت تماما بما قمت به معكم ومن ثم أخبرتهم ..

and I explained the whole thing.

وشرحت لهم كل ما سبق ..

وفي النهاية جُن جنونهم .. وأخذوا يصفقوا و يصفقوا ..

At the end, they went crazy, clapping.

I was clapping. They were clapping.

وكنت أصفق .. وكانوا يصفقون

Finally, I said, "Why am I clapping?"

في النهاية سئلت نفسي " لماذا أصفق ؟ "

And one of them said, "Because we were listening."

وأجاب أحد الأطفال الصغار " لاننا كنا نستمع ! "

Think of it. 1,600 people, busy people,

فكروا بهذا . 1600 شخص - أشخاص مشغولون -

منخرطون بأعمال من كافة الأنواع

involved in all sorts of different things,

listening, understanding and being moved

يستمعون ويفهمون ويتأثرون بمقطوعة من " شوبان "

by a piece by Chopin.

Now, that is something.

إن هذا لهو شيءٌ حقاً

Am I sure that every single person followed that,

والآن أنا متأكد من أن كل شخص تبع المعزوفة ..

understood it, was moved by it?

فهمها وتأثر بها وبالطبع لايمكنني أن أجزم بهذا

Of course, I can't be sure.

But I'll tell you what happened to me in Ireland

وسأخبركم ماذا حدث لي .

كنت أيرلندا أثناء المشاكل منذ عشرة أعوام

during the Troubles, 10 years ago,

and I was working with some Catholic and Protestant kids

وكنت أعمل مع بعض الأطفال الكاثوليك والبروتستانت

on conflict resolution.

بعد إنتهاء احد الصراعات .. وقد قمت بهذا معهم ..

And I did this with them --

a risky thing to do, because they were street kids.

وقد كان شيءٌ خطير قمت به .. لانهم كانوا أطفال شارع

وفي صباح اليوم التالي قدم إلي أحدهم وقال

And one of them came to me the next morning

and he said,

"You know, I've never listened to classical music in my life,

" أتعلم أنا لم أستمع في حياتي للموسيقى الكلاسيكية ..

but when you played that shopping piece ..."

ولكن عندما قدمت أنت وعزفت لنا مقطوعة " شوبينغ = تسويق " ..."

(ضحك)

(Laughter)

He said, "My brother was shot last year and I didn't cry for him.

ثم أردف " لقد قتل أخي السنة الماضية برصاصة ولكني لم أبكي عليه ..

But last night, when you played that piece,

ولن الليلة الماضية عندما عزفت هذه المقطوعة

he was the one I was thinking about.

لم أكن أفكر سوى فيه ..

And I felt the tears streaming down my face.

وشعرت بالدموع تهطل على وجهي .

And it felt really good to cry for my brother."

وتعلم . لقد شعرت أنه من الجيد أنني بكيت على أخي "

So I made up my mind at that moment

ومنذ تلك اللحظة إقتنعتُ

أن الموسيقى الكلاسيكية للجميع . للجميع

that classical music is for everybody.

Everybody.

Now, how would you walk --

فكيف تعرف كيف تمشي .. لانك تعرف فحسب !

my profession, the music profession doesn't see it that way.

معلميَّ , معلمي الموسيقى لم يروا هذا الامر بنفس الشاكلة

They say three percent of the population likes classical music.

فهم مقتنعون أن 3% فقط من الناس تعجبهم الموسيقى الكلاسيكية

وإذا استطعنا فقط ان نرفع تلك النسبة الى 4% فأن مشكلاتنا سوف تُحل

If only we could move it to four percent, our problems would be over.

(Laughter)

How would you walk? How would you talk? How would you be?

وأنا أقول " كيف ستسير ؟ كيف ستتحدث ؟ كيف ستكون ؟ ..

ان اقتنعت أن فقط 3% من الناس تحب الموسيقى الكلاسيكية ؟

If you thought, "Three percent of the population likes classical music,

if only we could move it to four percent."

وأن عليك فقط رفعها إلى 4% . كيف ستسير ؟

How would you walk or talk? How would you be?

كيف ستتحدث ؟ كيف ستكون ؟

If you thought, "Everybody loves classical music --

إن إعتقدت أن الناس جميعاً تحب الموسيقى الكلاسيكية --

ولكنهم لم يدركوا ذلك بعد "

they just haven't found out about it yet."

See, these are totally different worlds.

أريتم . عالمان مختلفان تماماً

Now, I had an amazing experience.

لقد خضت تجربة رائعة عندما كنت في 45 من عمري

I was 45 years old,

فقد كنت مايسترو لمدة 20 عام ومن ثم فجأة رأيت ..

I'd been conducting for 20 years,

and I suddenly had a realization.

The conductor of an orchestra doesn't make a sound.

أن مايسترو الاوركسترا لايصدر أي صوت ..

My picture appears on the front of the CD --

وصورتي تظهر على غلاف القرص الليزري -

(ضحك)

(Laughter)

But the conductor doesn't make a sound.

- ولكن المايسترو لايصدر اي صوت

He depends, for his power,

فهو يعتمد على قوة قدرته بجعل الآخرين أقوياء

on his ability to make other people powerful.

وقد غير هذا المفهوم كل شيء لدي .. لقد كان مفصل حياة

And that changed everything for me.

It was totally life-changing.

People in my orchestra said,

وجاء إلي العازفون في الاوركسترا خاصتي وقالوا لي ..

"Ben, what happened?" That's what happened.

" بين , ماذا حدث ؟ " وهذا ما حدث

لقد أدركت أن وظيفتي هي إيقاظ القدرات في الأشخاص الآخرين

I realized my job was to awaken possibility in other people.

وبالطبع كنت أريد دلالة على أني أقوم بهذا ..

And of course, I wanted to know whether I was doing that.

وهل تعلمون كيف يمكنكم أن تعلموا هذا ؟ عليكم بالنظر إلى أعينهم .

How do you find out?

You look at their eyes.

فإذا كانت تلمع فأنت تقوم بالامر ..

If their eyes are shining, you know you're doing it.

You could light up a village with this guy's eyes.

يمكنك أن تضيء قرية بأعين هذا الرجل

(ضحك)

(Laughter)

Right. So if the eyes are shining, you know you're doing it.

حسناً . فإذا كانت تلمع الأعين فأنت تقوم بالأمر

وإذا لم تكن تلمع عليك أن تسأل نفسك سؤالاً

If the eyes are not shining, you get to ask a question.

وهذا السؤال هو :

And this is the question:

" ماذا أنا لكي لا أجعل أعين عازفيَّ تلمع "

who am I being

that my players' eyes are not shining?

We can do that with our children, too.

وينسحب هذا على أطفالنا أيضاً

Who am I being,

" ماذا أنا لكي لا أجعل أعين أطفاليّ تلمع "

that my children's eyes are not shining?

That's a totally different world.

وهذا عالمٌ مختلفٌ تماماً

Now, we're all about to end this magical, on-the-mountain week,

ونحن الآن على وشك الانتهاء من هذا الاسبوع الساحر على قمة الجبل

we're going back into the world.

ومن ثم سنعود إلى العالم

And I say, it's appropriate for us to ask the question,

وأنا أقول أنه من الواجب أن نسأل أنفسنا :

who are we being as we go back out into the world?

كيف سنغدو حين نعود إلى العالم ؟

And you know, I have a definition of success.

أتعلمون , لدي تعريف للنجاح

For me, it's very simple.

وهو بسيطٌ جداً وهو ليس عن الثروة أو الشهرة أو السلطة

It's not about wealth and fame and power.

انما هو عدد الأعين التي تلمع من حولي

It's about how many shining eyes I have around me.

So now, I have one last thought,

والآن لدي فكرة أخيرة

which is that it really makes a difference what we say --

وهي تغير فعلا الطريقة التي نتحدث بها ..

الكلام الذي يخرج من أفواهنا ..

the words that come out of our mouth.

وقد تعلمتها من أمرأة نجت من معتقل " أوشفيتز "

I learned this from a woman who survived Auschwitz,

one of the rare survivors.

واحدة من القلة التي نجت

She went to Auschwitz when she was 15 years old.

فقد دخلت إلى " أوشفيتز " وهي إبنة 15 عاما

And ...

وكان أخوها ابن 8 أعوام وكانت قد فقدت والديها ..

And her brother was eight,

and the parents were lost.

And she told me this, she said,

وقد أخبرتني هذا .. قالت ..

"We were in the train going to Auschwitz,

" عندما كنا نُنقل في القطار إلى " أوشفيتز " نظرت أسفلاً ..

and I looked down and saw my brother's shoes were missing.

ورأيت أن أخي قد فقد حذائه ..

I said, 'Why are you so stupid, can't you keep your things together

فقلت له : لماذا أنت غبيٌ لدرجة أنك لا يمكنك الحفاظ على أشيائك ..

for goodness' sake?'"

بحق الإله ؟ " - كما قد تتحدث أيُ أخت كبيرة ..

The way an elder sister might speak to a younger brother.

إلى أخيها الصغير .

ولسوء الحظ كان تلك آخر عبارات أقولها له

Unfortunately, it was the last thing she ever said to him,

لانها عندما رأته مرة أخرى كان قد فارق الحياة

because she never saw him again.

He did not survive.

And so when she came out of Auschwitz, she made a vow.

لذلك عندما خرجت من " أوشفيتز " كانت قد أقسمت على نفسها ..

She told me this.

لقد أخبرتني بهذا .. قالت " عندما خرجت من " أوشفيتز " إلى الحياة ..

She said, "I walked out of Auschwitz into life

أقسمت على نفسي . وكان القسم : أنني لن أتسرع بقول أي شيء ..

and I made a vow.

And the vow was,

"I will never say anything that couldn't stand as the last thing I ever say."

لانه قد يكون آخر شيء أقوله لذلك الشخص وقد أندم على هذا "

هل يمكننا القيام بهذا ؟ - لا - لأننا سنُخطىء

Now, can we do that? No.

And we'll make ourselves wrong and others wrong.

وسيُخطىء غيرنا . ولكنها فرضية يمكننا العيش بها . شُكراً

But it is a possibility to live into.
