Probably a lot of you know the story of the two salesmen

皆さんの多くは、1900年代にアフリカに行った

who went down to Africa in the 1900s.

They were sent down to find if there was any opportunity

Now, there's a similar situation in the classical music world,

because there are some people who think that classical music is dying.

And there are some of us who think you ain't seen nothing yet.

他方では、まだまだこれからだと思っている人がいるからです

And rather than go into statistics and trends,

そこで、閉鎖しかかっているオーケストラの数や

and tell you about all the orchestras that are closing,

商売をたたもうとしているレコード会社などの

and the record companies that are folding,

統計の話はやめて

I thought we should do an experiment tonight.

今晩は実験をしてみようと思います　実験です

Actually, it's not really an experiment, because I know the outcome.

But it's like an experiment.

Now, before we start --

Before we start, I need to do two things.

One is I want to remind you of what a seven-year-old child

sounds like when he plays the piano.

Maybe you have this child at home.

At that point, they usually give up.

Now, if you'd waited for one more year, you would have heard this.

Now, what happened was not maybe what you thought,

which is, he suddenly became passionate, engaged,

involved, got a new teacher, he hit puberty, or whatever it is.

没頭したとか、いい先生についたとか、思春期とかそういうことではなくて

本当の理由はリズムを取るのが減ったからです

What actually happened was the impulses were reduced.

You see, the first time, he was playing with an impulse on every note.

つまり、最初に弾いた時は

それぞれの音符にアクセントがありました

And the second, with an impulse every other note.

二回目の時は一つおきにアクセント

You can see it by looking at my head.

私の頭を見ればわかりますよね

The nine-year-old put an impulse on every four notes.

The 10-year-old, on every eight notes.

And the 11-year-old, one impulse on the whole phrase.

I don't know how we got into this position.

I didn't say, "I'm going to move my shoulder over, move my body."

No, the music pushed me over,

which is why I call it one-buttock playing.

だからそれを「お尻一つ」奏法と呼んでいます

It can be the other buttock.

You know, a gentleman was once watching a presentation I was doing,

私が若いピアニストとやっているプレゼンテーションを

見ていた人がいて

when I was working with a young pianist.

彼はオハイオにある会社の社長さんだったんですが

He was the president of a corporation in Ohio.

私がその若いピアニストとやっていて言いました：

I was working with this young pianist, and said,

"The trouble with you is you're a two-buttock player.

「お尻二つで演奏しているからいけないんだ」

「お尻一つにしなさい」と

You should be a one-buttock player."

I moved his body while he was playing.

彼が弾いている時にこう押したわけです

And suddenly, the music took off. It took flight.

そうしたら演奏が突然良くなって　空に舞った

The audience gasped when they heard the difference.

その違いを聞いていた人たちから驚きの声が上がりました

Then I got a letter from this gentleman.

しばらくして その紳士から手紙をもらいました：

He said, "I was so moved.

「私は感激しました

帰ってから、会社のみんなにも

I went back and I transformed my entire company

into a one-buttock company."

『お尻一つ』でやらせることにしました」

(Laughter)

Now, the other thing I wanted to do is to tell you about you.

もう一つやっておきたいのは、皆さんに、自分自身を知ってほしい

たしか1600人いるんですよね

There are 1,600 people, I believe.

My estimation is that probably 45 of you

私の計算では、おそらくこのうち45人は

are absolutely passionate about classical music.

クラシック音楽に絶対的な情熱がある

You adore classical music. Your FM is always on that classical dial.

クラシックを深く愛している　FMラジオは常にクラシックチャンネルだし

You have CDs in your car, and you go to the symphony,

車にはCDがあって、音楽会も聴きに行く

your children are playing instruments.

子どもにも楽器を習わせ

クラシック音楽無しの人生なんて考えられない

You can't imagine your life without classical music.

That's the first group, quite small.

これが第一のグループ：非常に少数です

Then there's another bigger group.

そして他に、もっと大きなグループがあって

The people who don't mind classical music.

クラシック音楽なんて気にかけない

(Laughter)

You know, you've come home from a long day,

長い一日を終えて家に帰った

and you take a glass of wine, and you put your feet up.

A little Vivaldi in the background doesn't do any harm.

That's the second group.

これが二番目のグループ

Now comes the third group:

三番目は

people who never listen to classical music.

クラシック音楽は全く聞かない

全然接点がない

It's just simply not part of your life.

You might hear it like second-hand smoke at the airport ...

空港の副流煙みたいなもので

(Laughter)

-- and maybe a little bit of a march from "Aida"

大講堂に入る時は

「アイーダ」の行進曲でもいいが、そうでもなければまったく耳にしない

when you come into the hall.

But otherwise, you never hear it.

That's probably the largest group.

それがおそらく一番大きなグループです

そしてさらに非常に小さなグループがある

And then there's a very small group.

These are the people who think they're tone-deaf.

それは自分たちが「音痴だ」と思っている人たちです

Amazing number of people think they're tone-deaf.

Actually, I hear a lot, "My husband is tone-deaf."

Actually, you cannot be tone-deaf.

Nobody is tone-deaf.

If you were tone-deaf, you couldn't change the gears

on your car, in a stick shift car.

You couldn't tell the difference between

somebody from Texas and somebody from Rome.

区別もできないんです

そして電話　電話です　お母さんが電話してきて

And the telephone. The telephone.

If your mother calls

on the miserable telephone, she calls and says, "Hello,"

彼女が「もしもし」という

you not only know who it is, you know what mood she's in.

あなたにはそれが誰だかわかるし、機嫌がいいか悪いかもわかる

You have a fantastic ear. Everybody has a fantastic ear.

あなたの耳は素晴らしい　誰の耳もみな素晴らしい

So nobody is tone-deaf.

つまり誰も音痴ではないのです

But I tell you what.

でも、私はこのまま放っておくわけにいかないんです

It doesn't work for me to go on with this thing,

with such a wide gulf between those who understand,

こういう風にクラシック音楽を理解し、

love and are passionate about classical music,

愛し、情熱を傾けている人たちと

それに全く関係がない人たちの隔たりをそのままにしておくのは

and those who have no relationship to it at all.

The tone-deaf people, they're no longer here.

音痴の人というのは、もうここにはいない

しかし、ここにいる三つのグループの人たちだけでも、互いにかけ離れている

But even between those three categories,

it's too wide a gulf.

So I'm not going to go on until every single person in this room,

だから、私はここにいる全ての人たち、

一階から一番上の席まで、それに他にも見ている人たちが

downstairs and in Aspen, and everybody else looking,

will come to love and understand classical music.

クラシック音楽を愛し理解するようにせずにはいられないのです

So that's what we're going to do.

Now, you notice that there is not the slightest doubt in my mind

それができるということを私自身が露ほども疑っていないのは、

that this is going to work, if you look at my face, right?

私の顔を見ればわかりますよね？

It's one of the characteristics of a leader that he not doubt

リーダーの特徴の一つは、指導を受けている人たちが

for one moment the capacity of the people he's leading

リーダーのどんな夢でも実現する能力があると

to realize whatever he's dreaming.

信じて疑わないことです

キング牧師は言うでしょうか?「私には夢がある

Imagine if Martin Luther King had said, "I have a dream.

Of course, I'm not sure they'll be up to it."

All right. So I'm going to take a piece of Chopin.

オーケー　それじゃショパンをやってみましょう

This is a beautiful prelude by Chopin.

これは美しいショパンの前奏曲で、知っている人もいるでしょう

Some of you will know it.

(Music)

今この部屋で起こったことを私がどう思ったかわかります？

Do you know what I think probably happened here?

When I started, you thought, "How beautiful that sounds."

私が弾き始めたら、思ったでしょ：「おおなんて美しい響きだ」

"I don't think we should go to the same place

「来年の夏休みは

別なところに行きたいわ」

for our summer holidays next year."

（笑）

(Laughter)

It's funny, isn't it?

It's funny how those thoughts kind of waft into your head.

どこからか思いつくなんて

And of course --

Of course, if the piece is long and you've had a long day,

you might actually drift off.

Then your companion will dig you in the ribs

and say, "Wake up! It's culture!" And then you feel even worse.

But has it ever occurred to you that the reason you feel sleepy

in classical music is not because of you, but because of us?

自分じゃなく演奏家のせいだって考えたことありませんか？

Did anybody think while I was playing,

誰か、私が演奏している時に

"Why is he using so many impulses?"

「なんでこいつはこんなにリズムをとっているんだ？」って思いましたか？

If I'd done this with my head you certainly would have thought it.

私が弾きながら頭を動かしていたら皆さんそう思ったでしょう

そしてこれから一生ずっと、クラシック音楽を聞くたびに

And for the rest of your life, every time you hear classical music,

こういうリズムが聞こえるか、わかるようになるでしょう

you'll always be able to know if you hear those impulses.

So let's see what's really going on here.

これは「シ」です　「シ」　上の音は「ド」です

We have a B. This is a B.

The next note is a C.

And the job of the C is to make the B sad.

そして「ド」の役割は「シ」を悲しく響かせることです

And it does, doesn't it?

(Laughter)

Composers know that.

作曲家は知ってるんです　悲しい曲にしたいなら

If they want sad music, they just play those two notes.

シとドを弾くんです

But basically, it's just a B, with four sads.

基本的にはシ、哀しみのシ

(Laughter)

Now, it goes down to A.

さて、そこからラ、ソ、ファと下りていく

Now to G.

And then to F.

So we have B, A, G, F.

つまりシ、ラ、ソ、ファ、そしてシラソファっていくと

And if we have B, A, G, F,

what do we expect next?

次は何が来ます？　ほら、まぐれだっていいんだから

That might have been a fluke.

Let's try it again.

And you notice nobody is tone-deaf, right?

You know, every village in Bangladesh

and every hamlet in China -- everybody knows:

da, da, da, da -- da.

ラ、ラ、ラ、ラ―ラ―――　だれでも次は「ミ」だってわかってるんです

Everybody knows, who's expecting that E.

さて、ショパンは「ミ」には行きたくなかった

Chopin didn't want to reach the E there,

because what will have happened?

なぜって？　だって終わっちゃうんだもん　「ハムレット」みたいに

It will be over, like Hamlet. Do you remember?

ハムレット覚えてます？　第一幕第五場：

Act One, scene three,

he finds out his uncle killed his father.

叔父が父王を殺したのを知る

彼は叔父に近づき

He keeps on going up to his uncle and almost killing him.

殺す直前で思いとどまる

そしてまた近づき、もう少しで殺すところまで行く

And then he backs away, he goes up to him again, almost kills him.

ずっと後ろの席に座っている批評家達は

The critics sitting in the back row there,

何か書かなきゃいけないのでこう言う：「ハムレットは先延ばし屋だ」

they have to have an opinion, so they say, "Hamlet is a procrastinator."

（笑）

それか「ハムレットはエディプスコンプレックスだ」

Or they say, "Hamlet has an Oedipus complex."

No, otherwise the play would be over, stupid.

ちがう　でないと劇が終わっちゃうじゃないか　ばかばかしい

(Laughter)

だからシェイクスピアは「ハムレット」にいろいろ詰め込んだんです

That's why Shakespeare puts all that stuff in Hamlet --

Ophelia going mad, the play within the play,

つまりオフィーリアが発狂し、劇中劇があり、

and Yorick's skull, and the gravediggers.

ヨリックの骸骨やら、墓掘りやら…

That's in order to delay --

要するに引き延ばしで―第五幕になってようやく殺せる

until Act Five, he can kill him.

ショパンも同じです　彼もミにたどり着きそうになり言うのです：

It's the same with the Chopin.

He's just about to reach the E,

and he says, "Oops, better go back up and do it again."

「ふむ、いっかい戻ってまたやってみよう」

でもう一度やる

So he does it again.

Now, he gets excited.

(Music)

そして興奮する

That's excitement, don't worry about it.

興奮は別に気にしなくてもいいです

Now, he gets to F-sharp, and finally he goes down to E,

そしてファのシャープにたどり着き、最後にミに落ち着く

but it's the wrong chord --

because the chord he's looking for is this one,

and instead he does ...

Now, we call that a deceptive cadence,

because it deceives us.

I tell my students, "If you have a deceptive cadence,

自分の生徒には言ってます：「偽終止を使う時は、

眉をつり上げるんだ　そうするとみんなわかるから」

raise your eyebrows, and everybody will know."

(Laughter)

Right.

でしょ？　それで彼はミにたどり着いたが、和音が違う

He gets to E, but it's the wrong chord.

ミにいってみる　この和音も違う

Now, he tries E again.

That chord doesn't work.

Now, he tries the E again. That chord doesn't work.

Now, he tries E again, and that doesn't work.

またミ　まだ和音が違う

And then finally ...

そしてついに…

一番前の男性で、こうなさいました　「ふぅーっ」って

There was a gentleman in the front row who went, "Mmm."

(Laughter)

It's the same gesture he makes when he comes home

彼はきっと家に帰って

長い一日、車のエンジンを切って、言う：

after a long day, turns off the key in his car and says,

"Aah, I'm home."

「ああ、帰り着いた」　みんな帰る場所がどこか知ってます

Because we all know where home is.

So this is a piece which goes from away to home.

だからこれは遠くから家に帰ってくる曲なんです

I'm going to play it all the way through and you're going to follow.

この後、通しでお聞かせします

そしてシドシドシドシ…

B, C, B, C, B, C, B --

down to A, down to G, down to F.

下がってラ、ソ、ファ、

Almost goes to E, but otherwise the play would be over.

もうミはすぐそこ　でもそれじゃ終わっちゃう

He goes back up to B, he gets very excited.

でまたシへ上る　興奮する　ファのシャープ、ミにいく

Goes to F-sharp. Goes to E.

でも和音が違う　違うんだ　そうじゃない

It's the wrong chord. It's the wrong chord.

And finally goes to E, and it's home.

そしてついにミ　おかえりなさい

And what you're going to see is one-buttock playing.

そしてごらんのとおり、「お尻一つ」の演奏です

Because for me, to join the B to the E,

なぜなら、シからミに行くのに

I have to stop thinking about every single note along the way,

途中の一つ一つの音について考えるのをやめて

長い、長いシからミへの流れを考えはじめるからです

and start thinking about the long, long line from B to E.

You know, we were just in South Africa, and you can't go to South Africa

南アフリカにいるとしましょう　南アフリカに行ったら

ネルソン・マンデラの牢獄の27年を考えないわけにはいかない

without thinking of Mandela in jail for 27 years.

What was he thinking about? Lunch?

彼は何を思っていたか？　昼飯のことか？

No, he was thinking about the vision for South Africa

いや違う　彼は南アフリカのビジョンについて考え

and for human beings.

人間について考えた　それがつまり―

This is about vision. This is about the long line.

ビジョンの話で、長い線の話です

Like the bird who flies over the field

and doesn't care about the fences underneath, all right?

So now, you're going to follow the line all the way from B to E.

それでシからミへのつながりを追いかけてみます

And I've one last request before I play this piece all the way through.

Would you think of somebody who you adore,

あなたが深く敬愛しているが、もういない人のことを想ってみて下さい

who's no longer there?

大好きだったおばあちゃん、恋人、

A beloved grandmother, a lover --

somebody in your life who you love with all your heart,

あなたの人生で、心の底から愛している人、

だが、その人はもういない

but that person is no longer with you.

Bring that person into your mind,

その人を心に想い、そして同時に

and at the same time,

シからミへの繋がりを追ってみて下さい

follow the line all the way from B to E,

and you'll hear everything that Chopin had to say.

You may be wondering why I'm clapping.

Well, I did this at a school in Boston

私はボストンの学校で

with about 70 seventh graders, 12-year-olds.

70人の7年生―12歳の子供たちを相手に これをやったことがあります

I did exactly what I did with you,

今と全く同じことをしました　彼らに話し、

and I explained the whole thing.

全てを説明しました

そして彼らは最後に、驚喜して拍手しました　手をたたいていたんです

At the end, they went crazy, clapping.

I was clapping. They were clapping.

私もです　皆が拍手していました

Finally, I said, "Why am I clapping?"

And one of them said, "Because we were listening."

そうしたら、小さい子どもが言ったんです：

「僕らがお利口に聞いていたから」（笑）

Think of it. 1,600 people, busy people,

考えてみて下さい、ここにいる、忙しくて

あらゆることに関わっている1600人の皆さん

involved in all sorts of different things,

listening, understanding and being moved

ショパンの曲を聴いて、理解して、心を動かされたのです

by a piece by Chopin.

Now, that is something.

それはすごいことでしょう

Am I sure that every single person followed that,

understood it, was moved by it?

Of course, I can't be sure.

But I'll tell you what happened to me in Ireland

でも私に起きたことを話しましょう

私は10年前、紛争の時期にアイルランドに行きました

during the Troubles, 10 years ago,

and I was working with some Catholic and Protestant kids

そしてカトリックとプロテスタントの子どもたちと

on conflict resolution.

対立解決の仕事をしました　彼らと一緒にやったのです

And I did this with them --

a risky thing to do, because they were street kids.

彼らはストリートキッズで、やるのはリスクがありました

翌朝、彼らの一人がやってきて言ったんです：

And one of them came to me the next morning

and he said,

"You know, I've never listened to classical music in my life,

「俺はさ、いっぺんもクラシックは聞いたことがなかったんだけど、

but when you played that shopping piece ..."

ショッピング(ショパン)の曲を弾いた時は…」（笑）

(Laughter)

He said, "My brother was shot last year and I didn't cry for him.

「俺の弟は去年、撃ち殺されて、その時も俺は泣かなかったんだけど

But last night, when you played that piece,

昨日あんたがピアノを弾いたのを聞いた時、

he was the one I was thinking about.

俺は弟のことを考えてたんだ

And I felt the tears streaming down my face.

その時涙が流れているのに気づいて

And it felt really good to cry for my brother."

それでさ、弟のために泣くのはほんとにいいもんだ、って感じたんだ」

So I made up my mind at that moment

そして私はその瞬間に

クラシック音楽は、みんなの、万人のものだと確信したんです

that classical music is for everybody.

Everybody.

Now, how would you walk --

さて、どう先導しますか？　―というのも

my profession, the music profession doesn't see it that way.

私の分野の専門家はものごとをそういう風には見ない

They say three percent of the population likes classical music.

彼らはクラシック音楽を好きなのは人口の3パーセントだと言っている

それを4パーセントに増やせれば満足だと言う

If only we could move it to four percent, our problems would be over.

(Laughter)

How would you walk? How would you talk? How would you be?

「どう導けば、どう話せば、どうしたらいい？

If you thought, "Three percent of the population likes classical music,

if only we could move it to four percent."

それが4パーセントに増えたからって…

How would you walk or talk? How would you be?

こう言ってみたらどうだろう？

If you thought, "Everybody loves classical music --

クラシック音楽はみんな大好きなんだ！

それに気づいてないだけなんだ、っていうのは？」

they just haven't found out about it yet."

See, these are totally different worlds.

その二つは全く違う

Now, I had an amazing experience.

私は驚くべき経験をしたことがあります　45歳の時でした

I was 45 years old,

20年指揮をしていて、突然気づいたんです

I'd been conducting for 20 years,

and I suddenly had a realization.

The conductor of an orchestra doesn't make a sound.

オーケストラの指揮者は音を出していない、って

My picture appears on the front of the CD --

CDには私の写真が載っている

（笑）

(Laughter)

But the conductor doesn't make a sound.

でも指揮者は音を出していない

He depends, for his power,

指揮者は自分のパワーを、他人を力づける能力に依存しているのです

on his ability to make other people powerful.

それが私のすべてを変えました　人生が変わってしまった

And that changed everything for me.

It was totally life-changing.

People in my orchestra said,

うちのオーケストラの団員がきて言うんです：

"Ben, what happened?" That's what happened.

「ベン、いったいどうしたんだ？」って　そういうことだったんです

I realized my job was to awaken possibility in other people.

If the eyes are not shining, you get to ask a question.

We can do that with our children, too.

Now, we're all about to end this magical, on-the-mountain week,

I learned this from a woman who survived Auschwitz,

one of the rare survivors.

She went to Auschwitz when she was 15 years old.

And her brother was eight,

and the parents were lost.

And she told me this, she said,

"We were in the train going to Auschwitz,

and I looked down and saw my brother's shoes were missing.

I said, 'Why are you so stupid, can't you keep your things together

The way an elder sister might speak to a younger brother.

―姉が普通に弟にいう言葉ですよね

Unfortunately, it was the last thing she ever said to him,

because she never saw him again.

He did not survive.

And so when she came out of Auschwitz, she made a vow.

She told me this.

She said, "I walked out of Auschwitz into life
