This is a kindergarten we designed in 2007.

ෙම් අපි 2007 දී නිර්මාණය කරපු ෙපර පාසලක්.

We made this kindergarten to be a circle.

අපි මේක හැදුවේ කවයක ආකාරයට.

It's a kind of endless circulation on top of the roof.

ඒක නිසා වහල උඩ නිරන්තර වාතාශ්‍රයක් ලැබෙනවා.

If you are a parent,

ඔබ අම්මා තාත්තා කෙනෙක් නම්,

you know that kids love to keep making circles.

ඔබ දන්නවා ළමයි අාසයි වෘත්ත හදන්න.

This is how the rooftop looks.

මේක තමයි වහල.

And why did we design this?

ඇයි අපි ෙම්ක නිර්මාණය කරේ?

The principal of this kindergarten said,

මේ පෙර පාසලේ විදුහල්පති කිව්වා,

"No, I don't want a handrail."

"නෑ, මට අත්වැලක් එපා."

I said, "It's impossible."

මම කිව්වා, "ඒක කරන්න බැහැ." කියලා.

But he insisted: "How about having a net sticking out from the edge of the roof?

ඒත් ඔහු බල කළා: "වහල අග පිටතට නෙරා එන දැලක් දැම්මොත් කොහොමද?

So that it can catch the children falling off?"

වැටෙන ළමයි ඒකෙන් අල්ලගන්න?"

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

I said, "It's impossible."

මම කිව්වා, "ඒක කරන්න බැහැ" කියලා.

And of course, the government official said,

ආණ්ඩුවේ නිලධාරියත් කිව්වා,

"Of course you have to have a handrail."

"අත්වැලක් තියෙන්නම ඕනෑ." කියලා.

But we could keep that idea around the trees.

ඒත් අපිට ගස් වටා නිර්මාණය තියන්න දුන්නා.

There are three trees popping through.

උඩින් මතුවන ගස් තුනක් තිබෙනවා.

And we were allowed to call this rope as a handrail.

ඒ වගේම අපිට මේ ලණුව අත්වැලක් ලෙස පාවිච්චි කරන්න ඉඩ දුන්නා.

But of course, rope has nothing to do with them.

ඒත්, ඒගොල්ලෝ ලණුව පාවිච්චි කරන්නේ නැහැ.

They fall into the net.

ඒගොල්ලෝ වැටෙන්නේ දැල අැතුළට.

And you get more,

එනවා තව,

and more,

තව,

more.

තවත් ළමයි.

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

Sometimes 40 children are around a tree.

සමහර වෙලාවට ළමුන් 40ක් ගහ වටේට.

The boy on the branch,

අත්තේ ඉන්න පිරිමි ළමයා,

he loves the tree so he is eating the tree.

එයා ගසට ආසා නිසා ගස කනවා.

(Laughter)

And at the time of an event,

යම් වැදගත් අවස්ථාවකදී,

they sit on the edge.

ඒ අය කෙළවරේ වාඩි වෙනවා.

It looks so nice from underneath.

පල්ලෙහා ඉඳන් බැලුවම ලස්සනට පේනවා.

Monkeys in the zoo.

සත්තු වත්තේ වඳුරෝ.

(Laughter)

Feeding time.

කන්න දෙන වෙලාව.

(Laughter) (Applause)

(සිනහව) (අත්පොළසන්)

And we made the roof as low as possible,

අපි වහල පුළුවන් තරම් මිටි කරා,

because we wanted to see children on top of the roof,

මොකද අපිට අවශ්‍ය වුණා ළමුන් වහල උඩ ඉන්නවා දකින්න,

not only underneath the roof.

වහල යට විතරක් නෙවෙයි.

And if the roof is too high, you see only the ceiling.

වහල උස වැඩි නම්, සිවිලිම විතරයි පේන්නේ.

And the leg washing place -- there are many kinds of water taps.

කකුල් හෝදන ස්ථානයේ-- එතැන විවිධාකාර වතුර කරාම තිබෙනවා.

You see with the flexible tubes,

නම්‍යශීලී පයිප්ප වලින්,

you want to spray water to your friends,

යාළුවන්ට වතුර ගහන්න පුළුවන්,

and the shower,

ඒත් වතුර මලයි

and the one in front is quite normal.

ඊට ඉස්සරහ තබෙන එකයි සාමාන්‍ය ඒවා.

But if you look at this,

ඒත් මේක බැලුවොත්,

the boy is not washing his boots,

මේ ළමයා එයාගේ බූට්ස් දෙක හෝදනවා නෙවෙයි,

he's putting water into his boots.

එයා බූට්ස් දෙක ඇතුළට වතුර දමනවා.

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

This kindergarten is completely open, most of the year.

මේ පෙර පාසල වසරේ වැඩි දවසක් සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ඇරලා.

And there is no boundary between inside and outside.

අැතුළයි එළියයි කියලා මායිමක් නැහැ.

So it means basically this architecture is a roof.

ඒ කියන්නේ මේක වාස්තු විද්‍යාව අතින් වහලක්.

And also there is no boundary between classrooms.

ඒ වගේම පංති අතරත් මායිමක් නැහැ.

So there is no acoustic barrier at all.

ඒක නිසා ශබ්ද වලට බාධවක් නැහැ.

When you put many children in a quiet box,

ළමයි ගොඩ දෙනෙක් නිහඬ පෙට්ටියකට දැම්මම,

some of them get really nervous.

සමහර අය බය වෙනවා.

But in this kindergarten,

ඒත් මේ පෙර පාසලේ

there is no reason they get nervous.

එහෙම බය වෙන්න හේතුවක් නැහැ.

Because there is no boundary.

ඒ මොකද මෙතන මායිමක් නැහැ.

And the principal says

විදුහල්පති කියනවා,

if the boy in the corner doesn't want to stay in the room,

කොණේ ඉන්න පිරිමි ළමයා කාමරේ ඉන්න අකැමැති වුණොත්,

we let him go.

අපි එයාට යන්න දෙනවා කියලා.

He will come back eventually, because it's a circle, it comes back.

එයා කොහොම හරි ආපහු ඒවි, මොකද මේක කවයක්, රවුමේ ආපහු එවෙනවා.

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

But the point is, in that kind of occasion,

ඒ වගේ වෙලාවලදී,

usually children try to hide somewhere.

සාමන්‍යයෙන් ළමයි කොහෙ හරි හැංගෙන්න බලනවා.

But here, just they leave and come back.

ඒත්, මෙතන ඒගොල්ලෝ එළියට ගිහින් ආපහු එනවා.

It's a natural process.

ඒක ස්වාභාවික ක්‍රියාවලියක්.

And secondly, we consider noise very important.

දෙවනුව, අපි ශබ්දය වැදගත් කියලා සලකනවා.

You know that children sleep better in noise.

ඕගොල්ලෝ දන්නවා ළමයි හොඳට නිදා ගන්නේ ශබ්දය තිබෙන තැනක.

They don't sleep in a quiet space.

නිශ්ශබ්ද තැනක නිදා ගන්නේ නැහැ.

And in this kindergarten,

ඉතින් මේ පෙර පාසලේදී,

these children show amazing concentration in class.

මේ ළමයි පුදුමාකාර සිත එක්තැන් වීමක් පෙන්වනවා.

And you know, our kind grew up in the jungle with noise.

දන්නවාද, අපේ වර්ගයා වර්ධනය වුණේ ශබ්ද සහිත කැළේ.

They need noise.

ඒගොල්ලන්ට ශබ්දය අවශ්‍යයයි.

And you know, you can talk to your friends in a noisy bar.

ඔබ දන්නවානේ කැකෝගසන බීමහලක ඉඳගෙන ඔබට යාළුවෝ එක්ක කථා කරන්න පුළුවන් කියලා.

You are not supposed to be in silence.

ඔබ හැදිලා තිබෙන්නේ නිශ්ශබ්දතාව තුළ ඉන්න නෙවෙයි.

And you know, these days

දන්නවාද, මේ දවස්වල

we are trying to make everything under control.

අපි හැමදෙයක්ම පාලනය කරන්න හදනවා.

You know, it's completely open.

ඒත් හැමදෙයක්ම විවෘතයි.

And you should know that

ඔබ දැනගත යුතුයි,

we can go skiing in -20 degrees in winter.

In summer you go swimming.

ගිම්හාන කාලෙදී පීනන්න යනවා.

The sand is 50 degrees.

And also, you should know that you are waterproof.

ඔබ දැනගන්න ඕනෑ ඔබ ජලයට ඔරොත්තු දෙන බව.

You never melt in rain.

ඔබව වැස්සට දියවෙන්නේ නැහැ.

So, children are supposed to be outside.

ඉතින් ළමුන් ඉන්නත් ඕනෑ එළිමහනේ.

So that is how we should treat them.

අපි ඒ විදියටයි ඒගොල්ලන්ට සලකන්න ඕනේ.

This is how they divide classrooms.

මෙහෙම තමයි එහෙදී පංති බෙදන්නේ.

They are supposed to help teachers.

ඔවුන් ගුරුවරුන්ට උදව් කරන්න ඕනෑ.

They don't.

ඒගොල්ලෝ එහෙම කරන්නේ නැහැ.

(Laughter)

I didn't put him in.

මම එයාව ඇතුළට දැම්මේ නැහැ.

A classroom.

පංතිකාමරයක්.

And a washbasin.

වතුර බේසමක්.

They talk to each other around the well.

ඒගොල්ලෝ ළිඳ වටේට ඉඳගෙන කථා කරනවා.

And there are always some trees in the classroom.

ඒ වගේම හැමතිස්සේම පංතිකාමරය ඇතුළේ ගස් කීපයක් තිබෙනවා.

A monkey trying to fish another monkey from above.

වඳුරෙක් තව වඳුරෙක්ව උඩ ඉඳන් බා ගන්න හදනවා.

(Laughter)

Monkeys.

වඳුරෝ.

(Laughter)

And each classroom has at least one skylight.

සෑම පංතියකම වහලේ එක කවුළුවක් හරි තිබෙනවා.

And this is where Santa Claus comes down at the time of Christmas.

මෙතැනින් තමයි නත්තල් කාලෙට නත්තල් සීයා පහළට එන්නේ.

This is the annex building,

මේක ඈඳපු ගොඩනැගිල්ලක්,

right next to that oval-shaped kindergarten.

ඕවලාකාර ඒ පෙර පාසලට අල්ලලා තිබෙන.

The building is only five meters tall with seven floors.

ඒ ගොඩනැගිල්ලේ උස මීටර් පහක් පමණයි, තට්ටු හතක් තිබෙනවා.

And of course, the ceiling height is very low.

අැත්තටම, සිවිලම හරි මිටියි.

So you have to consider safety.

ඒක නිසා ආරක්ෂාව ගැන හිතන්න වෙනවා.

So, we put our children, a daughter and a son.

අපි අපේ දරුවෝ දෙන්නාව දැම්මා, දුවෙකුයි පුතෙකුයි.

They tried to go in.

ඒ දෙන්නා ඇතුළට යන්න හැදුවා.

He hit his head.

පුතාගේ ඔළුව වැදුණා.

He's okay. His skull is quite strong.

එයාට ප්‍රශ්නයක් නැහැ. එයාගේ හිස්කබල ශක්තිමත්.

He is resilient. It's my son.

ඉක්මණට හොඳ වෙනවා. මගේ පුතානේ.

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

And he is trying to see if it is safe to jump off.

එයා බලනවා පනින එක ආරක්ෂා සහිතද කියලා.

And then we put other children.

ඊට පස්සේ අපි අනිත් ළමයිවත් දැම්මා.

The traffic jam is awful in Tokyo, as you know.

ටෝකියෝවල වාහන තදබදය භයානකයි, ඕගොල්ලෝ දන්නවානේ.

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

The driver in front, she needs to learn how to drive.

ඉස්සරහා ඉන්න රියදුරා, ඈ එළවන්න ඉගෙන ගන්න ඕනෑ

Now these days,

මේ දවස්වල,

kids need a small dosage of danger.

දරැවන්ට කුඩා මාත්‍රාවකින් අනතුරැදායිබව අවශ්‍යයයි.

And in this kind of occasion,

මේ වගේ වෙලාවක,

they learn to help each other.

ඒගොල්ලෝ එකිනෙකාට උදව් කරන්න ඉගෙන ගන්නවා.

This is society. This is the kind of opportunity we are losing these days.

මේක තමයි සමාජය. මේ වගේ අවස්ථා තමයි අද අපිට නැති වෙන්නේ.

Now, this drawing is showing the movement of a boy

මේ චිත්‍රයන් පිරිමි ළමයෙක්ගේ යන එන තැන් පෙන්වනවා

between 9:10 and 9:30.

9:10 ත් 9:30ත් අතර.

And the circumference of this building is 183 meters.

මේ ගොඩනැගිල්ලේ පරිධිය මීටර් 183ක්.

So it's not exactly small at all.

ඒ කියන්නේ එච්චර පොඩි නැහැ.

And this boy did 6,000 meters in the morning.

But the surprise is yet to come.

And these children have the highest athletic abilities

among many kindergartens.

බොහෝ පෙර පාසල්වලට සාපේක්ෂව.

The principal says,

විදුහල්පති කිව්වා,

"I don't train them. We leave them on top of the roof.

"මම ඒගොල්ලන්ව පුහුණ කරන්නේ නැහැ. අපි ඒගොල්ලන්ව වහල උඩ තියනවා.

Just like sheep."

බැටළුවෝ වගේ."

(Laughter)

They keep running.

ඒගොල්ලෝ නොකඩවා දුවනවා.

(Laughter)

(සිනහව)

My point is don't control them,

මම කියන්නේ ඒගොල්ලන්ව පාලනය කරන්න එපා,

don't protect them too much,

වැඩිය ආරක්ෂා කරන්න යන්න එපා,

and they need to tumble sometimes.

සමහර වෙලාවට ඒගොල්ලෝ වැෙටන්න ඕනෑ.

They need to get some injury.

තුවාල ෙවන්න ඕනෑ.

And that makes them learn

ඒකෙන් ඒගොල්ලෝ ඉගෙන ගන්නවා

how to live in this world.

මේ ලෝකයේ ජීවත් වෙන්න.

I think architecture is capable of changing this world,

මම හිතන්නේ වාස්තු විද්‍යාවට පුළුවන් මේ ලෝකය ෙවනස් කරන්න,

and people's lives.

ඒවගේම මිනිස් ජීවිතත්.

And this is one of the attempts to change the lives of children.

මේ ළමයින්ගේ ජීවිත වෙනස් කරන්න එක් උත්සාහයක්.
