The best kindergarten you’ve ever seen | Takaharu Tezuka

This is a kindergarten we designed in 2007.

ही बालवाडी आहे, आम्ही २००७ साली बांधलेली.

We made this kindergarten to be a circle.

आम्ही ही बालवाडी एका वर्तुळाच्या आकारात बांधली आहे.

It's a kind of endless circulation on top of the roof.

म्हणजे छपरावर हा एक प्रकारचा अखंड मार्ग आहे.

If you are a parent,

तुम्ही जर पालक असाल,

you know that kids love to keep making circles.

तर तुम्हाला ठाऊक असेलच,की मुलांना गोल गोल फिरायला खूप आवडतं.

This is how the rooftop looks.

हे पहा, छप्पर वरून असं दिसतं.

And why did we design this?

तर, आम्ही हे असं का बांधलं?

The principal of this kindergarten said,

या बालवाडीचे मुख्याध्यापक म्हणाले,

"No, I don't want a handrail."

" नाही. मला इथे कठडा नको."

I said, "It's impossible."

मी म्हणालो, "ते शक्य नाही."

But he insisted: "How about having a net sticking out from the edge of the roof?

पण त्यांनी आग्रह सोडला नाही. छपराच्या कडेने एक जाळी सोडली तर?

So that it can catch the children falling off?"

पडणारी मुलं त्यात पकडता येतील.

(Laughter)

(हशा )

I said, "It's impossible."

मी म्हणालो, "ते शक्य नाही."

And of course, the government official said,

अर्थात, सरकारी अधिकारी म्हणाले,

"Of course you have to have a handrail."

"कठडा तर हवाच."

But we could keep that idea around the trees.

पण ही कल्पना झाडांभोवती ठेवता येईल.

There are three trees popping through.

इथे छपरामधून डोकं वर काढणारी तीन झाडं आहेत.

And we were allowed to call this rope as a handrail.

या दोरालाच कठडा म्हणायची आम्हाला परवानगी मिळाली.

But of course, rope has nothing to do with them.

पण अर्थातच, त्या दोराशी मुलांचा काही संबंध नाही.

They fall into the net.

ती आपली सरळ त्या जाळीत पडतात.

And you get more,

आणखी मुलं.

and more,

आणखी जास्त.

more.

आणखी.

(Laughter)

Sometimes 40 children are around a tree.

कधीकधी एका झाडाभोवती चाळीस मुलं असतात.

The boy on the branch,

त्या फांदीवरच्या मुलाला

he loves the tree so he is eating the tree.

ते झाड इतकं आवडतंय, की तो ते चाखतो आहे.

(Laughter)

And at the time of an event,

काही कार्यक्रम असेल,

they sit on the edge.

तेव्हा मुलं छपराच्या कडेवर बसतात.

It looks so nice from underneath.

खालून पाहताना ते किती छान दिसतं.

Monkeys in the zoo.

प्राणीसंग्रहालयातली माकडं.

(Laughter)

(हशा )

Feeding time.

जेवायची वेळ.

(Laughter) (Applause)

(हशा आणि टाळ्या)

And we made the roof as low as possible,

आम्ही या छपराची उंची कमीत कमी ठेवली.

because we wanted to see children on top of the roof,

कारण आम्हाला छपरावरची मुलं बघायची होती.

not only underneath the roof.

फक्त छपराखालचीच नव्हेत.

And if the roof is too high, you see only the ceiling.

जर छप्पर खूप उंच केलं असतं, तर फक्त आतलं छत दिसलं असतं.

And the leg washing place -- there are many kinds of water taps.

आणि ही पाय धुवायची जागा. पाण्याचे नळ अनेक प्रकारचे असतात.

You see with the flexible tubes,

या लवचिक नळ्या वापरून

you want to spray water to your friends,

मित्रांवर पाणी उडवता येतं.

and the shower,

आणि हा शॉवर.

and the one in front is quite normal.

हा साधाच आहे.

But if you look at this,

पण हे पाहिलंत का,

the boy is not washing his boots,

हा मुलगा आपले बूट धुवत नसून,

he's putting water into his boots.

त्या बुटात पाणी भरतो आहे.

(Laughter)

(हशा )

This kindergarten is completely open, most of the year.

वर्षभर ही बालवाडी अशी पूर्णपणे खुली असते.

And there is no boundary between inside and outside.

आत आणि बाहेर यामध्ये सीमारेषाच नसते.

So it means basically this architecture is a roof.

तर याचा अर्थ असा की, ही इमारत म्हणजे केवळ एक छप्पर आहे.

And also there is no boundary between classrooms.

आणि दोन वर्गांमध्येही भिंती नाहीत.

So there is no acoustic barrier at all.

म्हणजेच, आवाजाला अटकाव नाही.

When you put many children in a quiet box,

पुष्कळ मुलांना जर एखाद्या शांत खोलीत बसवलं,

some of them get really nervous.

तर त्यातली काही मुलं अतिशय अस्वस्थ होतील.

But in this kindergarten,

पण या बालवाडीत

there is no reason they get nervous.

त्यांना अस्वस्थ वाटायचं काहीच कारण नाही.

Because there is no boundary.

कारण इथे भिंतीच नाहीत.

And the principal says

आणि मुख्याध्यापक म्हणतात,

if the boy in the corner doesn't want to stay in the room,

जर त्या कोपऱ्यातल्या मुलाला वर्गात बसावसं वाटत नसेल,

we let him go.

आम्ही त्याला बाहेर जाऊ देतो.

He will come back eventually, because it's a circle, it comes back.

तो अखेरीस परत येईल. कारण हे वर्तुळ आहे. ते परत येणारच.

(Laughter)

(हशा )

But the point is, in that kind of occasion,

पण मुद्दा असा आहे, की अशा परिस्थितीत

usually children try to hide somewhere.

मुलं कुठेतरी लपून बसण्याचा प्रयत्न करतात.

But here, just they leave and come back.

पण इथे मात्र, ती जातात आणि परत येतात.

It's a natural process.

स्वाभाविकच आहे ते.

And secondly, we consider noise very important.

दुसरं, आम्हाला गडबड गोंधळ खूप महत्त्वाचा वाटतो.

You know that children sleep better in noise.

मुलं गोंधळातच शांत झोपतात.

They don't sleep in a quiet space.

शांत जागी त्यांना झोप लागत नाही.

And in this kindergarten,

आणि या बालवाडीमध्ये,

these children show amazing concentration in class.

मुलं वर्गात कमालीची एकाग्रता दाखवतात.

And you know, our kind grew up in the jungle with noise.

आपल्यासारखे प्राणी जंगलात, गोंधळातच वाढतात.

They need noise.

गोंधळ हा त्यांना गरजेचा असतो.

And you know, you can talk to your friends in a noisy bar.

एखाद्या बारमध्ये गलका असला, तरीही तिथे आपण मित्रांशी बोलू शकतो.

You are not supposed to be in silence.

गप्प बसून राहणं हा आपला स्वभावच नव्हे.

And you know, these days

आजकाल

we are trying to make everything under control.

आपण सगळ्या गोष्टींवर नियंत्रण ठेवू पाहतो.

You know, it's completely open.

ही शाळा पूर्णपणे खुली आहे.

And you should know that

तुम्हाला ठाऊक असेलच, की

we can go skiing in -20 degrees in winter.

हिवाळ्यात उणे २० डिग्री तापमान असताना स्कीईंग करता येतं.

In summer you go swimming.

उन्हाळ्यात आपण जेव्हा पोहायला जातो,

The sand is 50 degrees.

तेव्हा वाळूचं तापमान असतं ५० डिग्री.

And also, you should know that you are waterproof.

तसंच तुम्हाला ठाऊक असायला हवं, की आपण जलरोधक असतो.

You never melt in rain.

आपण पावसात विरघळत नाही.

So, children are supposed to be outside.

तर, मुलांनी बाहेरच राहायचं असतं.

So that is how we should treat them.

आणि आपण त्यांना तसंच राहू दिलं पाहिजे.

This is how they divide classrooms.

तर ही मुलं वर्गाची अशी विभागणी करताहेत.

They are supposed to help teachers.

त्यांनी शिक्षकांना मदत करायला हवी.

They don't.

पण ते कुठे मदत करताहेत?

(Laughter)

(हशा )

I didn't put him in.

मी नाही त्याला आत घातलं!

A classroom.

हा वर्ग.

And a washbasin.

हे बेसिन.

They talk to each other around the well.

पाणवठ्याभोवती मुलं एकमेकांशी गप्पा मारतात.

And there are always some trees in the classroom.

आणि वर्गात नेहमीच झाडं असतात.

A monkey trying to fish another monkey from above.

एका माकडाला वर ओढून घेणारा दुसरा माकड.

Monkeys.

माकडं.

(Laughter)

And each classroom has at least one skylight.

प्रत्येक वर्गात एकतरी झरोका असतोच.

And this is where Santa Claus comes down at the time of Christmas.

आणि ख्रिसमसला, सेंटाक्लॉस इथून खाली उतरतो.

This is the annex building,

आणि ही शाळेला जोडलेली इमारत.

right next to that oval-shaped kindergarten.

त्या गोल बालवाडीच्या शेजारची.

The building is only five meters tall with seven floors.

ही सातमजली इमारत फक्त पाच मीटर उंच आहे.

And of course, the ceiling height is very low.

So you have to consider safety.

So, we put our children, a daughter and a son.

And he is trying to see if it is safe to jump off.

And then we put other children.

मग आम्ही इतर मुलांना तिथे जाऊ दिलं.

The traffic jam is awful in Tokyo, as you know.

तोक्योतला ट्रैफ़िक जैम भयंकर असतो.

(Laughter)

The driver in front, she needs to learn how to drive.

त्या पुढच्या ड्रायव्हरने ड्रायव्हिंग शिकायला हवंय.

Now these days,

आजकालच्या दिवसांत,

kids need a small dosage of danger.

मुलांना धोक्याची लहानशी गुटी मिळायला हवी.

And in this kind of occasion,

आणि अशा परिस्थितीत,

they learn to help each other.

ते एकमेकांना मदत करायला शिकतात.

This is society. This is the kind of opportunity we are losing these days.

यालाच समाज म्हणातात. हल्ली अशा संधी आपण गमावत चाललो आहोत.

Now, this drawing is showing the movement of a boy

आता या चित्रात एका मुलाची हालचाल दाखवली आहे.

between 9:10 and 9:30.

९:१० ते ९:३० या वेळेतली.

And the circumference of this building is 183 meters.

आणि या इमारतीचा परीघ १८३ मीटर आहे.

So it's not exactly small at all.

म्हणजे हे अंतर अगदी छोटं आहे असं म्हणता येणार नाही.

And this boy did 6,000 meters in the morning.

या मुलाने सकाळी ६००० मीटर अंतर पार केलं.

But the surprise is yet to come.

पण खरं आश्चर्य तर पुढेच आहे.

The children in this kindergarten do 4,000 meters on average.

या बालवाडीतली मुलं सरासरी ४००० मीटर अंतर पार करतात.

And these children have the highest athletic abilities

आणि या मुलांची शारीरिक क्षमता

among many kindergartens.

इतर मुलांपेक्षा जास्त आहे.

The principal says,

मुख्याध्यापक म्हणतात,

"I don't train them. We leave them on top of the roof.

आम्ही त्यांना प्रशिक्षण देत नाही. फक्त छपरावर सोडतो.

Just like sheep."

मेंढरांसारखं.

(Laughter)

(हशा )

They keep running.

ती धावत राहतात.

(Laughter)

(हशा )

My point is don't control them,

माझं मत असं, की त्यांना नियंत्रणात ठेवू नका.

don't protect them too much,

त्यांना फार जपू नका.

and they need to tumble sometimes.

त्यांनी थोडं धडपडायला हवं.

They need to get some injury.

त्यांना थोडी दुखापत व्हायला हवी.

And that makes them learn

त्यातूनच ती शिकतात,

how to live in this world.

या जगात कसं जगायचं.

I think architecture is capable of changing this world,

मला वाटतं, स्थापत्यशास्त्र जग बदलू शकतं.

and people's lives.

आणि लोकांचं आयुष्यही.

And this is one of the attempts to change the lives of children.

आणि हा एक प्रयत्न आहे, मुलांचं आयुष्य बदलण्याचा.
