The best kindergarten you’ve ever seen | Takaharu Tezuka

This is a kindergarten we designed in 2007.

આ છે,વતુઁળના ઢાંચામા બનાવામાં આવેલુ કિન્ડરગાર્ટન,

We made this kindergarten to be a circle.

જે ૨૦૦૭મા બનાવવામા આવેલુ છે.

It's a kind of endless circulation on top of the roof.

તેની છત અંતહીન રીતે ફેલાયેલી છે.

If you are a parent,

માતા-પિતા તો જાણતા જ હશે કે,

you know that kids love to keep making circles.

બાળકોને વર્તુળ બનાવવા સૌથી વધુ પસંદ હોઈ છે.

This is how the rooftop looks.

અેની છત એવી રીતે જ રીતે બનાવવામા આવી છે,

And why did we design this?

શા માટે એવી રીતે?

The principal of this kindergarten said,

કિન્ડરગાટનના આચાર્યઅે જણાવ્યુ કે ,

"No, I don't want a handrail."

"ના, મને કઠેરાની જરૂર નથી."

I said, "It's impossible."

મે જણાવ્યું, "તે અશકય છે."

But he insisted: "How about having a net sticking out from the edge of the roof?

પરંતુ તેમનો આગ્રહ હતો કે , "જાળ ને છતની ધાર પર લગાવીએ તો કેવું ?,

So that it can catch the children falling off?"

તો ગબડી પડતા બાળકોને એ જીલી શકે."

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

I said, "It's impossible."

મે જણાવ્યું કે, "તે અશકય છે."

And of course, the government official said,

અને અલબત,સરકારી અધીકારી એ પણ જણાવ્યું કે,

"Of course you have to have a handrail."

"કઠેરાની જરુર છે."

But we could keep that idea around the trees.

આપણે જરુરથી વૃક્ષ ની આજુબાજુ, જાળ લગાવી શકીએ.

There are three trees popping through.

તેવા ત્રણ વૃક્ષો છે,

And we were allowed to call this rope as a handrail.

જેને અાપણે દોરડાની જાળ લગાવી શકીએ, જે ને કઠેરાે ગણી શકાય.

But of course, rope has nothing to do with them.

પણ, દોરડાને એની સાથે કોય લેવા-દેવા નથી.

They fall into the net.

એ લોકો કુદશે જાળ પર.

And you get more,

થોડાક,

and more,

થોડા વધારે,

more.

હજી થોડા વધારે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

Sometimes 40 children are around a tree.

અને કયારેક તો પુરા ચાલીસ.

The boy on the branch,

પેલો ડાળી પર છોકરો છે,

he loves the tree so he is eating the tree.

એને વૃક્ષ બહુ ગમે છે, તેથી એને બટકું ભરી રહ્યો છે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

And at the time of an event,

અને કોયપણ , સમારોહ વખતે ,

they sit on the edge.

એ લોકો આવી રીતે છતની ધારે બેસે છે.

It looks so nice from underneath.

અે ખુબ જ સુંદર લાઞે છે.

Monkeys in the zoo.

જાણે કે, પ્રાણીસંગ્રહાલયના વાંદરા.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

Feeding time.

જમવાનો સમય.

(Laughter) (Applause)

(હાસ્ય) (તાળીઓ)

And we made the roof as low as possible,

અમે છત થોડી ઢળતી રાખી છે,

because we wanted to see children on top of the roof,

કારણ કે, અમે બાળકોને છત પર જોય શકીએ.

not only underneath the roof.

માત્ર છત નીચે જ નહિ.

And if the roof is too high, you see only the ceiling.

જો છત બહુ ઊંચી હોય તો, માત્ર છતને જ નીહાળી શકાય.

And the leg washing place -- there are many kinds of water taps.

અને છે અા પગ ધોવાની જગ્યા, અને એમાં અલગ-અલગ પ્રકારના નળ લગાવેલ છે.

You see with the flexible tubes,

પેલી નળી જોય,

you want to spray water to your friends,

એનાથી તેઅો તેમના મિત્રોપર પાણી ઉડાવી શકે છે,

and the shower,

તેમને ભીંના પણ કરી શકે છે.

and the one in front is quite normal.

આ ઘણું સામાન્ય લાઞે,

But if you look at this,

પણ પેલો બાળક,

the boy is not washing his boots,

એના જૂત્તા ધોઈ નથી રહ્યો,

he's putting water into his boots.

પણ એમા પાણી ભરી રહ્યો છે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

This kindergarten is completely open, most of the year.

આ કિન્ડરગાર્ટન,આખું વર્ષ ચાલુ રહે છે.

And there is no boundary between inside and outside.

કોયપણ જાતની અંદર-બાહરની સીમા નથી,

So it means basically this architecture is a roof.

માત્ર છે, તો છત.

And also there is no boundary between classrooms.

વગઁખંડ વચ્ચે કોય સીમા નથી.

So there is no acoustic barrier at all.

કોયપણ પકારની હદ નથી.

When you put many children in a quiet box,

ઘણીવાર બાળકો ને બંધરૂમ માં રાખવાથી,

some of them get really nervous.

ઘણાખરા બાળકો વ્યાકુલ થય જતા હોઈ છે,

But in this kindergarten,

પણ આ કિન્ડરગાર્ટનમા,

there is no reason they get nervous.

વ્યાકુળ થવાનું,કોઈ કારણ જ નથી.

Because there is no boundary.

કારણકે,અહિયાં કોઈ જ અવરોધ નથી.

And the principal says

આચાર્યા એ કહ્યું,

if the boy in the corner doesn't want to stay in the room,

'અગર , પેલા ખૂણા માં ઉભેલો બાળક, વર્ગખંડ માં રહેવા નથી માંગતો,

we let him go.

તો અમે તેને બહાર જવા દયેએ છીએ.

He will come back eventually, because it's a circle, it comes back.

આ ગોળાકારમાં ફેલાયેલું છે, એ આખરે અહિયાં જ પાછો આવશે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

But the point is, in that kind of occasion,

પણ સવાલ અ છે કે આના પાછળ નો હેતુ શું છે?

usually children try to hide somewhere.

બાળકો સંતાય જતા હોઈ છે,

But here, just they leave and come back.

પણ અહિયાં જતા રહે છે, પણ વળી ને પાછા અહિયાં જ આવે છે.

It's a natural process.

આ સ્વાભાવિક છે.

And secondly, we consider noise very important.

અને બીજું અમે માનીએ છે , શોરબકોર - અવાઝ ખુબ જ મહ્તવનો છે.

You know that children sleep better in noise.

તમે જાણો છો ? બાળકો શોરબકોરમાં વધારે સારી રીતે સુવે છે.

They don't sleep in a quiet space.

સુવા માટે, શાંત જગ્યા થોડી ઓછી પસંદ કરે છે.

And in this kindergarten,

તેમ છતાં,આ કિન્ડરગાર્ટનમાં,

these children show amazing concentration in class.

બાળકોની એકાગ્રતા અદ્દભૂત છે.

And you know, our kind grew up in the jungle with noise.

આપણે પણ , શોરબકોર માં જંગલમાં જ મોટા થયા છીએ.

They need noise.

શોરબકોર આપણને પણ ગમે છે.

And you know, you can talk to your friends in a noisy bar.

તમે ઘોંઘાટ વળી જગ્યામાં પણ, તમારા મિત્રો સાથે વાતો કરી શકો છો.

You are not supposed to be in silence.

તમને પણ શાંત વાતાવરણ માં રેહવું, ઓછું પસંદ આવે છે.

And you know, these days

અને આજકાલ,

we are trying to make everything under control.

આપણે બધું નિયંત્રણમાં રાખવા માંગીએ છીએ

You know, it's completely open.

પણ , અહિયાં બધી જ છૂટ છે,

And you should know that

એ પણ તમારે જાણવું જોયે.

we can go skiing in -20 degrees in winter.

આપણે 20 ડિગ્રી તાપમાન માં સ્કીઈંગ કરી શકીએ છીએ,

In summer you go swimming.

અને ઉનાળા માં સ્વીમ્મીંગ કરીએ છીએ,

The sand is 50 degrees.

જયારે રેતી 50 ડિગ્રી તપેલી હોઈ છે.

And also, you should know that you are waterproof.

આ પણ તમારે જાણવું જરુરી છે કે , તમે જલરોધક છો,

You never melt in rain.

વરસાદમાં ઓગળી નહિ જાવ.

So, children are supposed to be outside.

બાળકો ને વધુ પડતા ખુલ્લા વાતાવરણમાં, રેહવા દેવા જોયે.

So that is how we should treat them.

એમનો આવી રીતે જ ઉચ્છેર કરો.

This is how they divide classrooms.

આવી રીતે વર્ગખંડ અલગ કરવામાં આવ્યા છે,

They are supposed to help teachers.

બાળકોએ,તેમના શિક્ષકો ને મદદ કરાવી જોયે,

They don't.

જો કે તેઓ ,કરતા નથી.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

I didn't put him in.

ના , મેં નથી બેસાડ્યો અન્દર એને.

A classroom.

આ છે વર્ગખંડ.

And a washbasin.

અને આ જલ્કુંડી .

They talk to each other around the well.

એની ફરતે વિટળાયને,તેઓ વાતો કરતા રહે છે.

And there are always some trees in the classroom.

એક વર્ગખંડમાં એક વૃક્ષ તો હોય જ છે.

A monkey trying to fish another monkey from above.

આ જુઓ,એક બારકસ,ઉંપરવાળા બારકસ ને, પકડવા પ્રયત્ન કરી રહ્યો છે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

Monkeys.

તોફાની બારકસો.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

And each classroom has at least one skylight.

દરેક વર્ગખંડ ને, એક તો બારી છે જ,

And this is where Santa Claus comes down at the time of Christmas.

અને નાતાલ ના સમય માં, અહિયાં સંતા ક્લૌસે આવે છે.

This is the annex building,

આ અન્નેક્ષ ઈમારત છે,

right next to that oval-shaped kindergarten.

જે લંબગોલ કિન્ડરગાર્ટનની, જમણી બાજુ માં આવેલ છે.

The building is only five meters tall with seven floors.

જે પાંચ મીટર ઊંચું છે, અને સાત માળનું બનેલું છે.

And of course, the ceiling height is very low.

છત ની ઉંચાય બહુ જ ઓછી રાખેલી છે.

So you have to consider safety.

સલામતી માટે સૌથી પેહલા વિચારવું રહ્યું.

So, we put our children, a daughter and a son.

આપણે આપના બાળકો - દીકરા ને દીકરી ને મોક્લીશું,

They tried to go in.

એ લોકો અંદર જશે.

He hit his head.

આ જુઓ,માથું ભટકાયું.

He's okay. His skull is quite strong.

તે સલામત છે,એની ખોપડી મજબૂત છે.

He is resilient. It's my son.

તે જલ્દીથી મૂળ પરિસ્થિતિમાં, આવવા ટેવાયેલો છે.તે મારો દીકરો છે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

And he is trying to see if it is safe to jump off.

એ અંદાજ લગાવી રહ્યો છે, અહિયાથી કુદકો મારવો કેટલો સલામત છે?

And then we put other children.

અને પાછળ પાછળ,બીજા બાળકો .

The traffic jam is awful in Tokyo, as you know.

ટોક્યોમાં,વાહનવ્યવહાર સ્થગીત થવું, ગંભીર મનાય છે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

The driver in front, she needs to learn how to drive.

ચાલક મોખરે છે, એને શીખવું જરૂરી છે,કે કેમ આગળ વધવું ?

Now these days,

ક્યારેક,

kids need a small dosage of danger.

બાળકોને ભય વિષે પણ શીખવાડવાની જરૂર હોઈ છે.

And in this kind of occasion,

અને આવા સમયે,

they learn to help each other.

એકબીજાની કેવી રીતે મદદ કરવી, એ શીખવા મળતું હોઈ છે.

This is society. This is the kind of opportunity we are losing these days.

આપણે સમાજ માં રહીએ એ છીએ, પણ આ તક આપણે ગુમાવી દીધી છે.

Now, this drawing is showing the movement of a boy

આ ચિત્ર બાળક ની 9:10 થી 9:30 વચ્ચેની

between 9:10 and 9:30.

સક્રિયતા બતાવે છે,

And the circumference of this building is 183 meters.

આ ઈમારત નો ઘેરાવો,183 મીટર છે.

So it's not exactly small at all.

આ બાળકે, સવાર-સવારમાં 6000 મીટર,

And this boy did 6,000 meters in the morning.

અંતર કાપ્યું છે, અને આ ઘણું વધારે કેહવાય.

But the surprise is yet to come.

આશ્ચર્યની વાત તો એ છે કે,

The children in this kindergarten do 4,000 meters on average.

આ કિન્ડરગાર્ટનના બાળકો, સરેરાશ 4000 મીટેર કાપતા હોઈ છે.

And these children have the highest athletic abilities

બીજા બાળકોની સરખામણીમાં,

among many kindergartens.

આ બાળકો શરીરક રીતે ઘણા ખડતલ હોય છે.

The principal says,

આચાર્ય એ જણાવ્યું કે,

"I don't train them. We leave them on top of the roof.

હું એમને તાલીમ નથી આપતો, છુટા મુક્કી દયે છીએ,

Just like sheep."

ઘેટા-બકરાં ની જેમ.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

They keep running.

અને એ લોકો દોડ્યા કરે છે.

(Laughter)

(હાસ્ય)

My point is don't control them,

મુદ્દાની વાત એ છે કે, એમને નિયંત્રણ માં ના રાખો,

don't protect them too much,

એમનો બચાવ કરવાની જરૂર નથી,

and they need to tumble sometimes.

એમને ક્યારેક ગબડવા દો,

They need to get some injury.

એમને ક્યારેક વાગવું જોયએ.

And that makes them learn

આજબધું એમને શીખવાsશે કે,

how to live in this world.

આ દુનિયામાં કેવી રીતે જીવવું જોયે.

I think architecture is capable of changing this world,

મને લાગે છે,આ ઢાંચો લોકોની જીંદગી અને દુનિયા,

and people's lives.

બદલવા સક્ષમ છે.

And this is one of the attempts to change the lives of children.

આ એક પ્રયત્ન છે, બાળકોની જીવનશૈલી બદલવાનો.
