And I would want to do that like that.

That would be the plan.

I would have it all ready to go,

but then, actually, the paper would come along,

and then I would kind of do this.

(Laughter)

And that would happen every single paper.

But then came my 90-page senior thesis,

So I planned things out,

This is how the year would go.

So I'd start off light,

and I'd bump it up in the middle months,

and then at the end, I would kick it up into high gear

just like a little staircase.

How hard could it be to walk up the stairs?

No big deal, right?

But then, the funniest thing happened.

Those first few months?

They came and went,

and I couldn't quite do stuff.

So we had an awesome new revised plan.

And then --

But then those middle months actually went by,

and I didn't really write words,

and so we were here.

and so I did the only thing I could:

I wrote 90 pages over 72 hours,

pulling not one but two all-nighters --

humans are not supposed to pull two all-nighters --

sprinted across campus,

dove in slow motion,

and got it in just at the deadline.

I thought that was the end of everything.

But a week later I get a call,

and it's the school.

And they say, "Is this Tim Urban?"

And I say, "Yeah."

And they say, "We need to talk about your thesis."

Anyway, today I'm a writer-blogger guy.

And a couple of years ago, I decided to write about procrastination.

My behavior has always perplexed the non-procrastinators around me,

and I wanted to explain to the non-procrastinators of the world

and why we are the way we are.

Now, I had a hypothesis

that the brains of procrastinators were actually different

So here's the brain of a non-procrastinator.

Now ...

here's my brain.

(Laughter)

There is a difference.

एउटा विलम्बकर्ताको लागि यसको मतलब के हो?

Both brains have a Rational Decision-Maker in them,

but the procrastinator's brain

also has an Instant Gratification Monkey.

Now, what does this mean for the procrastinator?

"All of that's going to take a while,

Now, what is going on here?

The Instant Gratification Monkey does not seem like a guy

He lives entirely in the present moment.

He has no memory of the past, no knowledge of the future,

And to the Monkey,

You have to keep well-slept, well-fed and propagating into the next generation,

Which is why we have another guy in our brain,

whatever makes sense to be doing right now.

Now, sometimes it makes sense

to be doing things that are easy and fun,

And that's when we have a conflict.

that conflict tends to end a certain way every time,

leaving him spending a lot of time in this orange zone,

an easy and fun place that's entirely out of the Makes Sense circle.

I call it the Dark Playground.

It's where leisure activities happen

at times when leisure activities are not supposed to be happening.

The fun you have in the Dark Playground

isn't actually fun, because it's completely unearned,

a less pleasant place, but where really important things happen?

Well, turns out the procrastinator has a guardian angel,

someone who's always looking down on him and watching over him

in his darkest moments --

someone called the Panic Monster.

Now, the Panic Monster is dormant most of the time,

but he suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close

or there's danger of public embarrassment,

a career disaster or some other scary consequence.

And importantly, he's the only thing the Monkey is terrified of.

Now, he became very relevant in my life pretty recently,

because the people of TED reached out to me about six months ago

and invited me to do a TED Talk.

Now, of course, I said yes.

It's always been a dream of mine to have done a TED Talk in the past.

Do we get what's going to be now happening one day in the future?

We need to sit down and work on this right now."

And the Monkey said, "Totally agree, but let's just open Google Earth

ताकि हामीलाई भारतको राम्रो ज्ञान होस्।”

and zoom in to the bottom of India, like 200 feet above the ground,

(सबैजना हाँस्छन्)

and scroll up for two and a half hours til we get to the top of the country,

हामीले त्यो दिन त्यही गर्यौँ।

so we can get a better feel for India."

(Laughter)

So that's what we did that day.

and a few seconds later, the whole system's in mayhem.

Now, the Panic Monster explains

When I did, I was amazed by the response.

जो विभिन्न खाले काममा संलग्न थिए।

ती मानिसहरू नर्स, बैंकर, चित्रकार, इन्जिनियर थिए

Literally thousands of emails came in,

अनि तीमध्ये धेरै नै पिएचडी विद्यार्थी थिए।

from all different kinds of people from all over the world,

(सबैजना हाँस्छन्)

doing all different kinds of things.

अनि उनीहरु सबैले एउटै कुरा लेखेका थिए:

These are people who were nurses, bankers, painters, engineers

“मलाई पनि यही समस्या छ।”

and lots and lots of PhD students.

तर मलाई उक्त पोष्टको हल्कापन र ती इमेलहरूको गाम्भीर्यता

(Laughter)

And they were all writing, saying the same thing:

बीचको भिन्नताले छोयो।

यी मानिसहरूले आफ्नो जीवनमा विलम्ब गर्ने बानीले के गर्‍यो

"I have this problem too."

But what struck me was the contrast between the light tone of the post

भनेर तीव्र निराशाका साथ लेखेका थिए,

and the heaviness of these emails.

र लेखेका थिए बाँदरले उनीहरुलाई के गर्यो।

These people were writing with intense frustration

मैले यस बारे सोचें, र भनेँ,

about what procrastination had done to their lives,

यदि विलम्बकर्ताको प्रणालीले काम गर्छ भने यो के भइरहेको छ?

about what this Monkey had done to them.

किन यी सबै मानिसहरु उदाश सुनिन्छन्?

And I thought about this, and I said,

खैर, खास कुरा यो रहेछ कि विलम्ब गराइका दुई प्रकार हुन्छन्।

well, if the procrastinator's system works, then what's going on?

आज मैले कुरा गरेका, अनि उदाहरण दिएका सबै कुराका

Why are all of these people in such a dark place?

समयसीमा हुन्छन्।

Well, it turns out that there's two kinds of procrastination.

अनि जब समयसीमा हुन्छन्,

विलम्ब गराइका असर अल्पकालीन हुन्छन्

Everything I've talked about today, the examples I've given,

अत्यासी राक्षसको संलग्नता हुने हुनाले।

तर विलम्ब गराइको दोश्रो प्रकार पनि हुन्छ

they all have deadlines.

जसमा समयसीमा हुँदैन।

And when there's deadlines,

the effects of procrastination are contained to the short term

यदि तपाईं आफैँ सुरुवाती पहल गर्नुपर्ने पेशा चाहनुहुन्छ

because the Panic Monster gets involved.

जस्तो कि: कलाको क्षेत्र वा व्यापार-व्यवसाय

But there's a second kind of procrastination

ती कामहरुमा सुरुमै समयसीमा हुँदैनन्,

that happens in situations when there is no deadline.

So if you wanted a career where you're a self-starter --

किनकी तपाईंले गाह्रो काम नगरेसम्म

something in the arts, something entrepreneurial --

केही अगाडि बढ्दैन, चलायमान हुँदैन।

पेशा-व्यवसाय बाहेक पनि जीवनमा धेरै अरु महत्वपूर्ण कुरा हुन्छन्

there's no deadlines on those things at first, because nothing's happening,

जसमा समयसीमा हुँदैन,

not until you've gone out and done the hard work

जस्तो कि: परिवार भेट्ने, कसरत गर्ने, आफ्नो स्वास्थ्यको ख्याल राख्ने,

to get momentum, get things going.

प्रेमिल सम्बन्ध बनाइ राख्ने

There's also all kinds of important things outside of your career

वा राम्रोसँग नचलिरहेको प्रेमिल सम्बन्ध टुटाउने।

that don't involve any deadlines,

विलम्बकर्ताको यी गार्हा काम गर्ने पद्दति

like seeing your family or exercising and taking care of your health,

working on your relationship

or getting out of a relationship that isn't working.

अत्यासी राक्षस मात्र भए त्यो समस्या हो।

किनकी यी सबै समयसीमा नभएका अवस्थाहरु हुन्,

Now if the procrastinator's only mechanism of doing these hard things

जसमा अत्यासी राक्षस देखापर्दैन।

ऊ जाग्नु पर्ने केही कारण छैन,

is the Panic Monster, that's a problem,

त्यसैले विलम्बका असर नियन्त्रित हुँदैनन्,

because in all of these non-deadline situations,

the Panic Monster doesn't show up.

He has nothing to wake up for,

so the effects of procrastination, they're not contained;

they just extend outward forever.

And it's this long-term kind of procrastination

that's much less visible and much less talked about

than the funnier, short-term deadline-based kind.

दीर्घकालीन बेखुसी, र अफसोसको।

It's usually suffered quietly and privately.

र मैले सोचेँ त्यही भएर यी सबै मानिसहरुले मलाई इमेल लेखे

And it can be the source

र त्यही नै कारणले उनीहरु दु:खी भएर बाँचिरहेका छन्।

of a huge amount of long-term unhappiness, and regrets.

न कि एउटा प्रोजेक्ट छोटो समयमा सक्न मरेर लागेका छन्।

And I thought, that's why those people are emailing,

दीर्घकालीन विलम्ब गराइले उनीहरुलाई कहिलेकाहीँ

and that's why they're in such a bad place.

आफ्नै जीवनमा दर्शक भएको अनुभव गराइरहेको छ।

It's not that they're cramming for some project.

निराशा यो होइन कि उनीहरूले आफ्नो सपना पूरा गर्न सकेनन्;

It's that long-term procrastination has made them feel like a spectator,

बरु यो हो कि ती सपनालाई पछ्याउन सुरु गर्न पनि उनीहरू सक्षम थिएनन्।

at times, in their own lives.

मैले ती इमेलहरू पढें र अलिकति दिव्यदर्शन पाएँ --

The frustration is not that they couldn't achieve their dreams;

it's that they weren't even able to start chasing them.

कि मलाई लाग्दैन गैर-विलम्बकर्ताहरु अस्तित्वमा छन्।

So I read these emails and I had a little bit of an epiphany --

हो- तपाईंहरु सबै विलम्बकर्ता हुनुहुन्छ भन्ने मलाई लाग्छ।

तपाईंहरु सबै भद्रगोले नहुनु होला,

that I don't think non-procrastinators exist.

जुन कि हामीमध्ये कोही छौँ,

That's right -- I think all of you are procrastinators.

समयसीमासँग तपाईंहरुमध्ये केहीको राम्रो सम्बन्ध होला,

Now, you might not all be a mess,

तर याद गर्नुहोस् कि बाँदरले आफ्नो चतुर दाउ तब चाल्छ

like some of us,

जब कुनै समयसीमा हुँदैन।

(Laughter)

and some of you may have a healthy relationship with deadlines,

अन्तमा तपाईंहरुलाई एक चिज देखाउन चाहन्छु।

म यसलाई जीवन पात्रो भन्छु।

but remember: the Monkey's sneakiest trick

यसमा ९० वर्षको जीवनको प्रत्येक हप्ताको लागि एउटा बक्स छ।

is when the deadlines aren't there.

Now, I want to show you one last thing.

त्यो भनेको खासै धेरै होइन,

I call this a Life Calendar.

That's one box for every week of a 90-year life.

That's not that many boxes,

especially since we've already used a bunch of those.

So I think we need to all take a long, hard look at that calendar.

We need to think about what we're really procrastinating on,

because everyone is procrastinating on something in life.

We need to stay aware of the Instant Gratification Monkey.

That's a job for all of us.
