As an Arab female photographer,

အာရပ်အမျိုးသမီး ဓာတ်ပုံသမား တစ်ယောက်အနေနဲ့

I have always found ample inspiration for my projects in personal experiences.

ကျွန်မ ပရောဂျက်တွေအတွက် ကိုယ်တိုင်အတွေ့အကြုံ ထဲကနေပြီး

စေ့ဆော်မှုအများအပြားကို ရရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

အသိပညာအတွက် ကျွန်မ တည်ဆောက်ချမှတ်ရန်

The passion I developed for knowledge,

ပြင်းပြနေခဲ့တဲ့ စိတ်ဓာတ်က

which allowed me to break barriers towards a better life

ကျွန်မကို ပိုမိုကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ဘဝဆီ ရှေးရှုနိုင်ခဲ့ကာ

အတားအဆီးတွေကို ကျော်ဖြတ်ဖို့အခွင့်ပေးပြီး

was the motivation for my project I Read I Write.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ I Read I Write ဆိုတဲ့ပရောဂျက်အတွက် တွန်းအားဖြစ်ခဲ့တာပေါ့။

Pushed by my own experience,

အဆင့်မြင့်ပညာရေးကို လိုက်စားခွင့်မရှိခဲ့လို့

as I was not allowed initially to pursue my higher education,

ကိုယ်ပိုင်တွန်းအားနဲ့ ပညာရေးကနေပြီး သူတို့ရဲ့ဘဝတွေကို

ပြောင်းလဲနိုင်ခဲ့ကြတဲ့ အခြားသော အမျိုးသမီးတွေရဲ့

I decided to explore and document stories of other women

ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကို လေ့လာဖော်ထုတ်ပြီး

who changed their lives through education,

မှတ်တမ်းပြုဖို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်ချလိုက်ပါတယ်။

သူတို့ရင်ဆိုင်ရတဲ့ အတားအဆီးတွေကို

while exposing and questioning the barriers they face.

ဖော်ထုတ်၊ မေးမြန်းရင်းပေါ့။

အမျိုသမီးတွေရဲ့ ပညာရေးနဲ့ပတ်သက်တဲ့

I covered a range of topics that concern women's education,

အကြောင်းအရာစုံကို ရေးသားခဲ့ပါတယ်၊

keeping in mind the differences among Arab countries

စီးပွားရေးနဲ့ လူမှုရေးတွေကြောင့်

အာရပ်နိူင်ငံတွေကြားက ကွာခြားမှုတွေကို

due to economic and social factors.

နှလုံးသွင်းထားရင်းပေါ့။

These issues include female illiteracy, which is quite high in the region;

ပါဝင်တဲ့ကိစ္စရပ်တွေက အမျိုးသမီး စာမတတ်မှု

ဒါက ဒီဒေသထဲမှာ တော်တော်လေးမြင့်မားပါတယ်၊

educational reforms; programs for dropout students;

ပညာရေးဆိုင်ရာ ပြုပြင်ပြောင်းလဲမှုတွေ၊

ပညာတစ်ပိုင်းတစ်စနဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေအတွက် အစီအစဉ်တွေ

ပြီးတော့ တက္ကသိုလ်ကျောင်းသားတွေထဲက

and political activism among university students.

နိူင်ငံရေးလှုပ်ရှားမှုတွေပေါ့။

As I started this work,

ဒီအလုပ်ကိုစတော့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေကို

it was not always easy to convince the women to participate.

ပါဝင်ဖို့စည်းရုံးသိမ်းသွင်းရတာ

အမြဲတမ်းကြီးတော့ မလွယ်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။

Only after explaining to them

ဒီအကြောင်းတွေဟာ အခြားသောအမျိုးသမီးတွေရဲ့

how their stories might influence other women's lives,

ဘဝတွေအပေါ် ဘယ်လိုသက်ရောက်မှုရှိစေတယ်၊

သူတို့အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းမှာ

how they would become role models for their own community, did some agree.

သူတို့ဟာ ဘယ်လိုစံပြ ဖြစ်စေလိမ့်မယ်ဆိုတာကို

ရှင်းပြပြီးမှပဲ သဘောတူကြတာလေ။

Seeking a collaborative and reflexive approach,

ပူးပေါင်းပါဝင်ခြင်း၊ ကိုယ်တို​င် ဖွင့်ဆိုရေးသားခြင်းနည်းနဲ့

သူတို့ရဲ့ကိုယ်ပိုင် ပုံရိပ်တွေကိုပုံနှိပ်ရာမှာ

I asked them to write their own words and ideas

သူတို့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် စကားလုံးတွေနဲ့

on prints of their own images.

စိတ်ကူးတွေကို ရေးသားစေခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Those images were then shared in some of the classrooms,

ဒီပုံတွေကို အဲဒီတုန်းက စာသင်ခန်း တွေထဲမှာမျှဝေပြီး

and worked to inspire and motivate other women

အလားတူပညာရေးတွေနဲ့ အခြေအနေတွေကို ဖြတ်သန်းခဲ့ကြတဲ့

အခြားအမျိုးသမီးတွေကို လှုံ့ဆော် အားပေးဖို့

going through similar educations and situations.

လုပ်ဆောင်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။

Aisha, a teacher from Yemen, wrote,

Aisha ဆိုတဲ့ ယီမင်က ကျောင်းဆရာမ တစ်ယောက်ရေးသားတာက

"I sought education in order to be independent

"ကျွန်မ ပညာသင်ယူခဲ့တာက အမှီအခိုကင်းဖို့နဲ့ အရာရာကို

and to not count on men with everything."

ယောက်ျားတွေကို အားကိုစရာ မလိုအောင်ပါ။"

ကျွန်မဖေါ်ပြတဲ့ ပထမဆုံးပုံတွေထဲက တစ်ယောက်ကတော့

One of my first subjects was Umm El-Saad from Egypt.

အီဂျစ်က Umm El-Saad ပါ၊

When we first met, she was barely able to write her name.

ကျွန်မတို့ ပထမတွေ့တုန်းက သူမဟာ နာမည်လောက်ပဲ ရေးတတ်ရုံပါ။

ကိုင်ရိုဆင်ခြေဖုံးမှာ နယ်ခံ NGO တစ်ခုကပြုလုပ်တဲ့

She was attending a nine-month literacy program

၉ လကြာ စာတတ်မြောက်ရေး

run by a local NGO in the Cairo suburbs.

အစီအစဉ်တစ်ခုကို သူမတက်နေတုန်းပေါ့။

လတွေကြာပြီးနောက် သူ့ယောက်ျားက သူမကို

Months later, she was joking that her husband

စာသင်ခန်းတွေထဲနေ ဆွဲထုတ်ဖို့ ခြိမ်းခြောက်ခံရတာကို

had threatened to pull her out of the classes,

သူမကက အရွှန်းဖောက်နေသေးတယ်၊

as he found out that his now literate wife

အခုစာတတ်နေပြီဖြစ်တဲ့ ဇနီးက ဖုန်းထဲကစာတိုတွေကို

was going through his phone text messages.

စစ်ဆေးနေတာကို သိသွားလို့တဲ့လေ။

Naughty Umm El-Saad.

တော်တော်နောက်တဲ့ Umm El-Saad နော်

Of course, that's not why Umm El-Saad joined the program.

တကယ်တော့ ဒါကြောင့်Umm El-Saad.က

ဒီအစီအစဉ်ကိုတက်ခဲ့တာမဟုတ်ပါဘူး၊

I saw how she was longing to gain control over her simple daily routines,

သူမရဲ့ ရိုးရှင်းတဲ့နေ့စဉ် လုပ်ကိုင်နေရတာတွေကို

ထိန်းချုပ်ဖို့ လိုအပ်ခဲ့တာကို ကျွန်မနားလည်လိုက်ပါတယ်။

small details that we take for granted,

ကျွန်မတို့က လွယ်လွယ်နဲ့ရလို့ အလေးမထားကြတဲ့ အသေးအဖွဲကလေးတွေပါ၊

from counting money at the market to helping her kids in homework.

စျေးမှာ ပိုက်ဆံရေတွက်ဖို့ကနေ ကလေးတွေကို

အိမ်စာ ကူလုပ်ဖို့ ဆိုတာတွေထိပါ။

Despite her poverty and her community's mindset,

သူမရဲ့ဆင်းရဲမှုနဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေရဲ့ပညာရေးကို

သေးသိမ်အောင်လုပ်တဲ့

which belittles women's education,

သူမပတ်ဝန်းကျင်က သဘောထားရှိပေမယ့်လည်း

Umm El-Saad, along with her Egyptian classmates,

သူမရဲ့အီဂျစ်အတန်းဖော်တွေနဲ့အတူ Umm El-Saad ဟာ

was eager to learn how to read and write.

စာရေး၊ စာဖတ်လုပ်တာကို သင်ယူချင်စိတ်ရှိခဲ့ပါတယ်။

တူနီးရှားမှာ Asma နဲ့ဆုံခဲ့တယ်၊

In Tunisia, I met Asma,

ကျွန်မတွေ့ဆုံမေးမြန်းခဲ့တဲ့ အမျိုးသမီး

one of the four activist women I interviewed.

လှုပ်ရှားပြောင်းလဲရေးဝါဒီ ၄ ယောက်ထဲက တစ်ယောက်ပါ။

ဒီဘာသာရေးမနွယ်တဲ့ မျိုးရိုးဗီဇ အင်ဂျင်နီယာ ကျောင်းသူဟာ

The secular bioengineering student is quite active on social media.

လူမှုရေးမီဒီယာမှာ တော်တော်လေးတက်ကြွသူပါ။

အာရပ်နွေဦးလို့ခေါ်တာကို တန်ဖိုးထားတဲ့

Regarding her country, which treasured what has been called the Arab Spring,

သူမရဲ့တိုင်းပြည်နဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး သူမပြောတာက

"ကျွန်မဟာ ဘက်တီးရီးယား အသစ်တစ်ခုကို

she said, "I've always dreamt of discovering a new bacteria.

ရှာဖွေဖို့ အမြဲစိတ်ကူးထားပါတယ်"တဲ့လေ။

Now, after the revolution, we have a new one every single day."

ကဲအခု တော်လှန်ရေးပြီးတော့ နေ့တိုင်းမှာကို

အသစ်တစ်ခု၊ တစ်ခုရနေတာပေါ့။

Asma was referring to the rise of religious fundamentalism in the region,

Asma ရည်ညွှန်းတာက ဒေသတွင်းက တင်းကျပ်တဲ့

ဘာသာရေး သဘောထားရဲ့ အုံကြွမှုကိုပါ။

ဒါဟာ အထူးသဖြင့်တော့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေအတွက်

which is another obstacle to women in particular.

နောက်ထပ် အတားအဆီးဆစ်ခုပါ။

Out of all the women I met, Fayza from Yemen affected me the most.

ကျွန်မတွေ့ဆုံခဲ့တဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေထဲက ယီမင်က Fayza ကတော့

စိတ်လှုပ်ရှားမှု အဖြစ်ဆုံးပါ။

Fayza was forced to drop out of school at the age of eight when she was married.

Fayza ဟာ အိမ်ထောင်ကျတော့ အသက် ၈ နှစ်မှာ ကျောင်းကနေ

အတင်းထွက်ခိုင်းတာ ခံခဲ့ရတယ်။

That marriage lasted for a year.

အိမ်ထောင်သက်က ၁ နှစ်ပဲကြာတယ်။

At 14, she became the third wife of a 60-year-old man,

၁၄ နှစ်မှာ အသက် ၆၀ အဖိုးကြီးရဲ့ တတိယမယားဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

၁၈နှစ်မပြည့်ခင်မှာပဲ ကလေး၃ယောက်နဲ့

and by the time she was 18, she was a divorced mother of three.

တစ်ခုလပ် အမေတစ်ယောက် ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Despite her poverty,

ဆင်းရဲပေမဲ့၊

despite her social status as a divorcée in an ultra-conservative society,

လွန်ကဲတဲ့ ရှေးရိုးစွဲ လူ့အဖွဲ့အစည်း တစ်ခုမှာ ရှိနေတဲ့

သူမရဲ့ တစ်ခုလပ်ဆိုတဲ့ လူမှုရေးဂုဏ်ဒြပ်တစ်ခုနဲ့၊

and despite the opposition of her parents to her going back to school,

သူ မကျောင်းပြန်တက်ဖို့ မိဘတွေကို အတိုက်အခံပြုရပေမဲ့

Fayza သိတာက သူမဘဝကို ထိန်းချုပ်ဖို့

Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education.

နည်းလမ်းက ပညာရေးနဲ့ပဲ ဆိုတာပါ။

She is now 26.

အခု သူမ အသက်၂၆နှစ်ပါ၊

She received a grant from a local NGO

တက္ကသိုလ်က စီးပွားရေးလေ့လာမှု

ဘာသာရပ်အတွက် ဒေသတွင်း

to fund her business studies at the university.

NGO တစ်ခုက သူမကို ငွေကြေးထောက်ပံ့ပါတယ်။

Her goal is to find a job, rent a place to live in,

သူမရည်ရွယ်ချက်က အလုပ်တစ်ခုရှာ၊ နေစရာတစ်ခုငှားပြီး

and bring her kids back with her.

သူမရဲ့ကလေးတွေကို ပြန်ခေါ်ဖို့ပါ။

အာရပ်နိုင်ငံတွေဟာ ကြီးမားတဲ့ အပြောင်းအလဲကို

The Arab states are going through tremendous change,

ဖြတ်သန်းနေကြရပါတယ်၊

အမျိုးသမီးတွေ ရင်ဆိုင်ရတဲ့ ရုန်းကန်လှုပ်ရှားမှုတွေကတော့

and the struggles women face are overwhelming.

စိတ်ထိခိုက်စရာကောင်းလှပါတယ်။

ကျွန်မ ဓာတ်ပုံရိုက်ယူခဲ့တဲ့ အမျိုးသမီးတွေလိုပဲ

Just like the women I photographed,

အခုကျွန်မ ဒီနေ့မှာလို

I had to overcome many barriers to becoming the photographer I am today,

ဓာတ်ပုံသမား တစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ဖို့ အတားအဆီးတွေအများကြီး

ကျော်လွှားခဲ့ရတာပေါ့။

many people along the way telling me what I can and cannot do.

ကြုံလာရာ လမ်းတစ်လျှောက်မှာ လူများစွာတို့က ကျွန်မဘာကို

ဘယလုပ်နိူင်တယ်၊ မလုပ်နိူင်ဘူးဆိုတာကို ပြောနေကြတယ်လေ။

Umm El-Saad, Asma and Fayza, and many women across the Arab world,

Umm El-Saad, Asma နဲ့ Fayza တို့လို

များစွာသော အာရပ်ကမ္ဘာတစ်လွှားက အမျိုးသမီးတွေကပြဆိုတာက

show that it is possible to overcome barriers to education,

ပညာရေးဆီကိုသွားဖို့ အတားအဆီးတွေကို

ကျော်လွှားဖို့ဆိုတာ ဖြစ်နိူင်တယ်လို့ပါ၊

which they know is the best means to a better future.

ပညာရေးဟာ ပိုကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ အနာဂတ်ဆီကိုရောက်ဖို့

အကောင်းဆုံးနည်းလမ်းဆိုတာ သူတို့သိကြတယ်လေ။

Don't accept their enslavement, for your mother birthed you free."
