As an Arab female photographer,

ഒരു അറേബ്യന്‍ വനിതാ ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫര്‍ എന്ന നിലക്ക്

I have always found ample inspiration for my projects in personal experiences.

വൈയക്തികനുഭവങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നു തന്നെ യഥേഷ്ടം പ്രചോദനം ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു.

The passion I developed for knowledge,

അറിവിനു വേണ്ടി ഞാന്‍ വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുത്ത കടുത്ത ആഗ്രഹം

which allowed me to break barriers towards a better life

മെച്ചപെട്ട ജീവിതജീവിതതിലേക്ക് തടസ്സമായ എല്ലാ പ്രതിസന്ധികളെയും പൊട്ടിച്ചെറിയാനെന്നെ അനുവദിച്ചു.

was the motivation for my project I Read I Write.

അതായിരുന്നു ഞാന്‍ എഴുതുന്നു ഞാന്‍ വായിക്കുന്നു എന്ന എന്‍റെ പ്രോജെക്ട്ടിന്‍റെ ചാലക ശക്തി.

Pushed by my own experience,

എന്‍റെ തന്നെ അനുഭവങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് പാഠം ഉള്‍ക്കൊണ്ട്,

as I was not allowed initially to pursue my higher education,

എന്തെന്നാല്‍ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനു എനിക്ക് അനുവാദം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല,

I decided to explore and document stories of other women

മറ്റു സ്ത്രീകളുടെ കഥകള്‍ അന്വേഷിക്കാനും പകര്‍ത്താനും ഞാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു

who changed their lives through education,

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെ ജീവിതം മാറ്റിമറിച്ചവരുടെ,

while exposing and questioning the barriers they face.

അവര്‍ അഭിമുഖീകരിച്ച തടസങ്ങള്‍ ചോദിക്കുകയും അറിയുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിനിടെ

I covered a range of topics that concern women's education,

ഞാന്‍ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം സംബന്ധിച്ച ഒരു കൂട്ടം പ്രശ്നങ്ങളിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോയി.

keeping in mind the differences among Arab countries

അറബ് രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ത്തന്നെയുള്ള വ്യത്യാസങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സില്‍ വച്ചുകൊണ്ട്

due to economic and social factors.

സാമ്പത്തികവും സാമൂഹികവും ആയ കാരണങ്ങളാല്‍

These issues include female illiteracy, which is quite high in the region;

സ്ത്രീകളുടെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും ഈ പ്രശ്നങ്ങളില്‍ ഉള്‍പെടുന്നു. ഇത് ഈ മേഖലയില്‍ കൂടുതലാണുതാനും.

educational reforms; programs for dropout students;

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ പരിഷ്കരണങ്ങള്‍; കൊഴിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥികള്‍ക്കു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പദ്ധതികള്‍;

and political activism among university students.

കോളേജ് വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ടയിലെ രാഷ്ടീയ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം.

As I started this work,

ഈ ഉദ്യമം തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോളത്തെ പോലെ

it was not always easy to convince the women to participate.

എളുപ്പമായിരുന്നില്ല സ്ത്രീകളെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കി പങ്കെടുപ്പിക്കുക എന്നത്.

Only after explaining to them

അവര്‍ക്ക് കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വിശദീകരിച്ചു കൊടുത്തതിനു ശേഷം മാത്രം

how their stories might influence other women's lives,

എങ്ങനെ അവരുടെ കഥകള്‍ മറ്റു സ്ത്രീകളെ സ്വാധീനിക്കും എന്ന്

how they would become role models for their own community, did some agree.

എങ്ങനെ അവരുടെ സമുദായത്തിന് അവര്‍ മാതൃകകള്‍ ആവുന്നു എന്ന് വിശദീകരിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം ചിലര്‍ അംഗീകരിച്ചു..

Seeking a collaborative and reflexive approach,

പരസ്പരപൂരകമായ സംയോജിച്ചുള്ള സമീപനം അന്വേഷിച്ച്

I asked them to write their own words and ideas

ഞാന്‍ അവരോടു സ്വന്തം ആശയങ്ങളും വാക്കുകളും എഴുതാന്‍ ആവശ്യപെട്ടു.

on prints of their own images.

അവരുടെ ചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പകര്‍പ്പിന്മേല്‍..

Those images were then shared in some of the classrooms,

ആ ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ പിന്നീട് പല ക്ലാസ്സ്‌ മുറികളില്‍ വച്ച് കൈമാറി,

and worked to inspire and motivate other women

മറ്റു സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് പ്രചോദനവും പ്രോത്സാഹനവും നല്‍കാന്‍ വേണ്ടി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചു.,

going through similar educations and situations.

സമാനമായ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെയും സാഹചര്യങ്ങളിലൂടെയും കടന്നു പോകെ,

Aisha, a teacher from Yemen, wrote,

അയ്ഷ, യെമെനില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള ഒരു ടീച്ചര്‍ ഇങ്ങനെ എഴുതി,

"I sought education in order to be independent

ഞാന്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടിയത് സ്വതന്ത്രയവാനും.

and to not count on men with everything."

എന്തിനും ഏതിനും പുരുഷനെ അശ്രയിക്കതിരിക്കാനും ആണ്.

One of my first subjects was Umm El-Saad from Egypt.

എന്റെ ആദ്യ വിഷയങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായ ഉം എല്‍ - സാദ് ഈജിപ്റ്റില്‍ നിന്നായിരുന്നു.

When we first met, she was barely able to write her name.

ഞങ്ങള്‍ ആദ്യം കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ അവള്‍ക്കു അവളുടെ പേര് എഴുതാന്‍ തന്നെ വിഷമമായിരുന്നു.

She was attending a nine-month literacy program

അവള്‍ ഒരു ഒന്‍പതു-മാസം നീണ്ട സാക്ഷരതാ പരിപാടിയില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

run by a local NGO in the Cairo suburbs.

കൈറോ ഭാഗത്തുള്ള ഒരു എന്‍. ജി. ഓ.(NGO) നടത്തുന്നതായിരുന്നു അത്.

Months later, she was joking that her husband

മാസങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ശേഷം, അവള്‍ തമാശയായി പറയുമായിരുന്നു അവളുടെ ഭര്‍ത്താവ്

had threatened to pull her out of the classes,

as he found out that his now literate wife

was going through his phone text messages.

Naughty Umm El-Saad.

Of course, that's not why Umm El-Saad joined the program.

ശരിക്കും ഉം എല്‍ - സാദ് അതിനുവേണ്ടിയല്ല പരിപാടിയില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തത്.

I saw how she was longing to gain control over her simple daily routines,

നിസാരമായ അവളുടെ വീട്ടുകാര്യങ്ങളെ സ്വയം നിയന്ത്രണത്തില്‍വരുത്താനുള്ള അവളുടെ കാത്തിരുപ്പ് ഞാന്‍ കണ്ടു.

small details that we take for granted,

അതിപരിചയം കൊണ്ട് നമ്മള്‍ക്ക് ശരിയായി മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ പോലും പറ്റാത്തത്ര ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍.

from counting money at the market to helping her kids in homework.

മാര്‍ക്കറ്റില്‍ പണം എന്നുന്നത് മുതല്‍ അവളുടെ കുട്ടികളുടെ ഹോം വര്‍ക്കില്‍ സഹായിക്കല്‍ വരെ.

Despite her poverty and her community's mindset,

അവളുടെ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തെയും സമുദായത്തിന്റെ മനസ്ഥിതിയെയും കൂട്ടാക്കാതെ,

which belittles women's education,

സ്ത്രീകളുടെ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തെ വില കുറച്ചു കണ്ടവരെ കൂട്ടാക്കാതെ

Umm El-Saad, along with her Egyptian classmates,

ഉം എല്‍ - സാദ് അവളുടെ ഈജിപ്ഷ്യന്‍ സഹപാഠികളോടൊപ്പം,

was eager to learn how to read and write.

In Tunisia, I met Asma,

ടുണീഷ്യയില്‍ ഞാന്‍ അസ്മയെ കണ്ടു മുട്ടി

one of the four activist women I interviewed.

ഞാന്‍ ടുണീഷ്യയില്‍ വച്ച് അഭിമുഖം നടത്തിയ നാലു വനിതാ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരില്‍ ഒരാള്‍

സെക്കുലര്‍ ചിന്താഗതിയുള്ള ആ ബയോ എന്‍ജിനീയരിംഗ് വിദ്യാര്‍ത്ഥിനി സോഷ്യല്‍ മീഡിയയില്‍ സജീവമായി ഇടപെട്ടു

The secular bioengineering student is quite active on social media.

അറബ് വസന്തം എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ട അവളുടെ രാജ്യത്തെ പുതു ചോദനകളെക്കുറിച്ച്

Regarding her country, which treasured what has been called the Arab Spring,

she said, "I've always dreamt of discovering a new bacteria.

അവള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. “ഞാന്‍ എപ്പോളും ഒരു പുതിയ ബാക്ടീരിയയെ കണ്ടുപിടിക്കുന്നതായി സ്വപ്നം കാണുമായിരുന്നു.

Now, after the revolution, we have a new one every single day."

Asma was referring to the rise of religious fundamentalism in the region,

which is another obstacle to women in particular.

അത് മറ്റൊരു തടസ്സമാണ്. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക്.

Out of all the women I met, Fayza from Yemen affected me the most.

ഞാന്‍ കണ്ട മുഴുവന്‍ സ്ത്രീകളിലേക്കുംവച്ചു എന്നെ ഏറ്റവും സ്വാധീനിച്ചത് യെമെനില്‍ വച്ച് കണ്ട ഫയ്സയാണ്.

Fayza was forced to drop out of school at the age of eight when she was married.

ഫയ്സ അവളുടെ എട്ടാമത്തെ വയസ്സില്‍ വിവാഹത്തിന് വേണ്ടി സ്കൂള്‍ വിടാന്‍ നിര്‍ബന്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

That marriage lasted for a year.

ആ വിവാഹം ഒരു വര്‍ഷമേ നീണ്ടു നിന്നുള്ളൂ.

At 14, she became the third wife of a 60-year-old man,

പതിനാലാം വയസ്സില്‍ അവള്‍ ഒരു 60 വയസ്സുകാരന്‍റെ മൂന്നാം ഭാര്യയായി.

and by the time she was 18, she was a divorced mother of three.

18 വയസ്സില്‍ വിവാഹമോചിതയായപ്പോള്‍ അവള്‍ മൂന്ന് കുട്ടികളുടെ അമ്മയായിരുന്നു.

Despite her poverty,

അവളുടെ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിന് എതിരായി,

despite her social status as a divorcée in an ultra-conservative society,

വിധവകളുടെ സാമൂഹിക അവസ്ഥകള്‍ക്കും യഥാസ്ഥിതിക സമൂഹത്തിനു എതിരായി,

and despite the opposition of her parents to her going back to school,

രക്ഷിതാക്കളുടെ തടസ്സങ്ങള്‍ക്കും എതിരെ,

Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education.

ഫയ്സക്കറിയാമായിരുന്നു അവളുടെ ജീവിതം നിയന്ത്രണത്തിലാക്കാനുള്ള ഒരേയൊരു വഴി വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെയാണെന്ന്.

She is now 26.

ഇന്നവള്‍ക്ക്‌ 26 വയസ്സായി.

She received a grant from a local NGO

അവള്‍ക്ക് ആ പ്രദേശത്തെ NGO യില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒരു ഗ്രാന്‍റ് ലഭിച്ചു

to fund her business studies at the university.

അവളുടെ യൂണിവെഴ്സിറ്റിയിലെ ബിസ്സിനെസ്സ് പഠനത്തിനു വേണ്ടി

Her goal is to find a job, rent a place to live in,

അവളുടെ ലക്‌ഷ്യം ഒരു ജോലിയാണ്, താമസിക്കാന്‍ വാടകയ്ക്ക് ഒരു ഇടത്തിനുവേണ്ടി

and bring her kids back with her.

അവളുടെകുട്ടികളെ തിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് വരന്‍ വേണ്ടി

The Arab states are going through tremendous change,

അറേബ്യന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ വലിയ മാറ്റത്തിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോവുകയാണ്

and the struggles women face are overwhelming.

സ്ത്രീകള്‍ അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകള്‍ അതികമായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്ക്യാണ്

Just like the women I photographed,

ഞാന്‍ ഫോട്ടോയില്‍ പകര്‍ത്തിയ സ്ത്രീകളെപ്പോലെ,

I had to overcome many barriers to becoming the photographer I am today,

ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന പോലത്തെ ഒരു ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫര്‍ അവ്വന്‍ എനിക്ക് ഒരുപാട് തടസ്സങ്ങള്‍ മറികടക്കേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്.

many people along the way telling me what I can and cannot do.

ഈ വഴിയിലുടനീളം പലരും എനിക്ക് ചെയ്യാന്‍ പറ്റുന്നതും പറ്റാത്തതും പറയുന്നു.

Umm El-Saad, Asma and Fayza, and many women across the Arab world,

ഉം എല്‍ - സാദ്, അസ്മ, ഫയ്സ ഇതുപോലെ അറബ് രാജ്യങ്ങളില്‍ ഉടനീളമുള്ള ഒരുപാട് സ്ത്രീകള്‍

show that it is possible to overcome barriers to education,

വിദ്യാഭ്യാസട്ടിന് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പ്രതിസന്ധികള്‍ മറികടക്കാന്‍ സാധിക്കും എന്ന് കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു.

which they know is the best means to a better future.

അവര്‍ക്കറിയാം നല്ല ഭാവിയിലേക്കുള്ള മികച്ച വഴി അതാണെന്ന്.

And here I would like to end with a quote by Yasmine,

യസ്മിന്‍റെ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ ഞാന്‍ ഇത് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കട്ടെ,

one of the four activist women I interviewed in Tunisia.

Yasmine wrote,

"Question your convictions.

നിങ്ങളുടെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യൂ

Be who you to want to be, not who they want you to be.

നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് എന്താവണം എന്നാണോ അതാവുക. അല്ലാതെ അവര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ട നിങ്ങള്‍ നിങ്ങളാവാതിരിക്കുക.

Don't accept their enslavement, for your mother birthed you free."

അവരുടെ അടിമത്വം സ്വീകരിക്കാതിരിക്കുക. കാരണം നിങ്ങളുടെ അമ്മ നിങ്ങളെപ്പെറ്റത് സ്വതന്ത്രയയാണ്‌.
