As an Arab female photographer,

I have always found ample inspiration for my projects in personal experiences.

個人的な体験は 私のプロジェクトに 溢れるほどのインスピレーションを与えてくれます

The passion I developed for knowledge,

より良い人生を掴む障害を 乗り越えられたのは

which allowed me to break barriers towards a better life

私に知識への情熱が あったからで

was the motivation for my project I Read I Write.

それが私のプロジェクト “I Read I Write” の 原動力になっています

Pushed by my own experience,

最初は高等教育を受けることを 許されなかった

as I was not allowed initially to pursue my higher education,

私自身の体験に後押しされて

I decided to explore and document stories of other women

直面する障害に 疑問を抱きながらも

who changed their lives through education,

教育によって自分の人生を 変えてきた女性達の物語を

while exposing and questioning the barriers they face.

探し 記録しようと決めました

I covered a range of topics that concern women's education,

私は女性の教育に関する 様々なことを扱ってきましたが

keeping in mind the differences among Arab countries

経済的・社会的要因による アラブ諸国間の違いに

due to economic and social factors.

留意するようにしました

These issues include female illiteracy, which is quite high in the region;

取り上げた問題の中には この地域で非常に高い女性の非識字率

educational reforms; programs for dropout students;

教育改革 落ちこぼれた生徒のためのプログラム

and political activism among university students.

政治を変えようとする学生達 などがあります

このプロジェクトを始めた頃

As I started this work,

it was not always easy to convince the women to participate.

女性に協力してもらうのは 容易ではありませんでした

Only after explaining to them

「あなたの話が 他の女性達の人生に影響を与えるんだ」

how their stories might influence other women's lives,

how they would become role models for their own community, did some agree.

「あなたは自分のコミュニティの ロールモデルになるんだ」と説得して

ようやく 何人かが承諾してくれる という感じでした

Seeking a collaborative and reflexive approach,

自らを見つめる姿を 協力してとらえようとする中で

I asked them to write their own words and ideas

自分が写った写真の上に 自分の言葉や想いを書いてくれよう

on prints of their own images.

彼女達に頼みました

Those images were then shared in some of the classrooms,

同じような境遇にある 他の女性達に

and worked to inspire and motivate other women

刺激や動機付けを 与えられるよう

going through similar educations and situations.

そういった写真を教室で 見てもらったりもしました

Aisha, a teacher from Yemen, wrote,

イエメンの教師であるアイシャは こう書いています

"I sought education in order to be independent

「私が教育を求めたのは 自立して

何でも男に頼らなくて 済むようにするためでした」

and to not count on men with everything."

One of my first subjects was Umm El-Saad from Egypt.

私の最初の被写体の１人だった エジプトのウム・エル=サイドは

When we first met, she was barely able to write her name.

最初会った時 自分の名前も 満足に書けませんでした

She was attending a nine-month literacy program

彼女はカイロ郊外で 地元のNGOが実施する

run by a local NGO in the Cairo suburbs.

９ヶ月の読み書き講座に 参加していました

何ヶ月かして彼女は 冗談交じりに言いました

Months later, she was joking that her husband

had threatened to pull her out of the classes,

文字を読めるようになった妻に

as he found out that his now literate wife

携帯のメールが チェックされるのを恐れて

was going through his phone text messages.

夫が教室をやめさせるぞと 脅しているんだと

(Laughter)

(笑)

やんちゃな ウム・エル=サイド

Naughty Umm El-Saad.

Of course, that's not why Umm El-Saad joined the program.

もちろん 彼女はそんな理由で 講座に参加したわけではありません

日常的なことをもっと自分で決めたいという 彼女の強い思いが私には分かりました

I saw how she was longing to gain control over her simple daily routines,

small details that we take for granted,

市場で勘定するとか 子供の宿題を手伝うといった

from counting money at the market to helping her kids in homework.

私たちなら当たり前と思っている 些細なことです

Despite her poverty and her community's mindset,

貧しさや

女性の教育を軽んじている 地域の風潮にかかわらず

which belittles women's education,

Umm El-Saad, along with her Egyptian classmates,

彼女はエジプト人の クラスメートとともに

was eager to learn how to read and write.

読み書きができるようになりたいと 強く願っています

In Tunisia, I met Asma,

チュニジアでは アスマに会いました

one of the four activist women I interviewed.

私がインタビューした ４人の活動家の１人です

The secular bioengineering student is quite active on social media.

宗教には無関心な生物工学を学ぶ学生で ソーシャルメディアでとても積極的に活動しています

Regarding her country, which treasured what has been called the Arab Spring,

アラブの春と呼ばれる大きな勝利を得た国ですが 彼女はこう言いました

she said, "I've always dreamt of discovering a new bacteria.

「新種のバクテリアを 発見するのが夢だったけど

Now, after the revolution, we have a new one every single day."

革命の後は毎日そんなのが現れる」

Asma was referring to the rise of religious fundamentalism in the region,

アスマは その地域にはびこる 宗教的原理主義者のことを言っています

which is another obstacle to women in particular.

これもまた女性には特に 障害となるものです

Out of all the women I met, Fayza from Yemen affected me the most.

出会った女性達の中で 私は イエメンのファイザに最も強く心を打たれました

Fayza was forced to drop out of school at the age of eight when she was married.

ファイザは８歳の時 学校をやめ結婚させられました

That marriage lasted for a year.

その結婚は１年しか 続きませんでした

At 14, she became the third wife of a 60-year-old man,

14歳の時 60歳の男の第３夫人になり

and by the time she was 18, she was a divorced mother of three.

18歳の時には ３人の子供の 離婚した母親となっていました

Despite her poverty,

貧しさにもかかわらず

despite her social status as a divorcée in an ultra-conservative society,

超保守的な社会における 離婚女性という社会的立場にもかかわらず

and despite the opposition of her parents to her going back to school,

学校に戻ることへ反対する 両親の存在にもかかわらず

Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education.

自分の人生を自分で決められるようになる唯一の方法は 教育を受けることだと彼女は分かっていました

She is now 26.

彼女は今 26歳です

She received a grant from a local NGO

地元のNGOから 援助を受けて

to fund her business studies at the university.

大学でビジネスについて 学んでいます

Her goal is to find a job, rent a place to live in,

彼女の目標は 仕事を見つけ 住む所を借り

and bring her kids back with her.

子供達と一緒に暮らすことです

The Arab states are going through tremendous change,

アラブの国々は今 ものすごい変化を経験しています

and the struggles women face are overwhelming.

女性達は圧倒されるような 困難に直面しています

Just like the women I photographed,

私が撮ってきた女性達同様

I had to overcome many barriers to becoming the photographer I am today,

私も今のような写真家になるまでには 幾多の障害を乗り越えなければなりませんでした

many people along the way telling me what I can and cannot do.

そうする中で多くの人から これはして良いとか 悪いとか 言われてきました

Umm El-Saad, Asma and Fayza, and many women across the Arab world,

ウム・エル=サイド　アスマ　ファイザ そしてアラブ世界のたくさんの女性達が

show that it is possible to overcome barriers to education,

教育の障害を乗り越えることは 可能だと示してくれました

which they know is the best means to a better future.

彼女達は それがより良い未来のための 最善の方法だと知っています

And here I would like to end with a quote by Yasmine,

ヤスミンの言葉で 締めくくりたいと思います

one of the four activist women I interviewed in Tunisia.

Yasmine wrote,

彼女はこう書きました

「自分の思い込んでいることに疑問を持つこと

"Question your convictions.

Be who you to want to be, not who they want you to be.

周りがなって欲しい人間ではなく 自分がなりたい人間になること

奴隷の立場を受け入れないこと お母さんは自由の身に生んでくれたのだから」

Don't accept their enslavement, for your mother birthed you free."
