As an Arab female photographer,

I have always found ample inspiration for my projects in personal experiences.

لطالما وجدت إلهاما كبيرا في التجارب الشخصية

The passion I developed for knowledge,

إن الطموح الذي طورته للمعرفة

which allowed me to break barriers towards a better life

والذي مكنني من كسر الحواجز نحو حياة أفضل

was the motivation for my project I Read I Write.

هو الحافز وراء مشروعي "أنا أقرأ، أنا أكتب"

Pushed by my own experience,

منطلقة من تجربتي الشخصية حيث

as I was not allowed initially to pursue my higher education,

لم يكن مسموحا لي أن أكمل تعليمي الجامعي في بادئ الأمر

I decided to explore and document stories of other women

قررت أن استكشف وأوثق قصص نساء أخريات

who changed their lives through education,

من اللواتي كن قادرات على تغيير حياتهن من خلال التعليم

while exposing and questioning the barriers they face.

عن طريق كشف الحواجز التي واجهتهن والاستفسار عنها

I covered a range of topics that concern women's education,

فغطيت عدد من المواضيع التي تهم تعليم النساء

keeping in mind the differences among Arab countries

آخذة بعين الاعتبار الاختلافات بين الدول العربية

due to economic and social factors.

الناجمة عن عوامل اقتصادية وسياسية

These issues include female illiteracy, which is quite high in the region;

وهذه المشاكل تتشمل نسبة الأمية بين الإناث، وهي نسبة مرتفعة بالمنطقة

educational reforms; programs for dropout students;

والإصلاح التعليمي وبرامج للطلاب المتسربين

بالإضافة إلى النشاط السياسي بين طلاب الجامعة

and political activism among university students.

منذ أن بدأت هذا العمل،

As I started this work,

it was not always easy to convince the women to participate.

لم يكن من السهل إقناع النساء بالتعاون.

إلا بعد الشرح لهن

Only after explaining to them

how their stories might influence other women's lives,

كيف أن قصصهن قد تؤثر إيجابًا في حياة نساء أخريات

how they would become role models for their own community, did some agree.

وكيف أنهن قد يصبحن قدوات يحتذى بهن في مجتمعاتهن

حينها فقط وافق البعض منهن على المشاركة

لأنني أردت أن يتعاونّ ويعكسن أنفسهن

Seeking a collaborative and reflexive approach,

I asked them to write their own words and ideas

طلبت منهن أن يكتبن كلماتهن وأفكارهن

على نسخ من صور شخصية لهن

on prints of their own images.

بعدها، وزعت تلك الصور على صفوف دراسية مختلفة

Those images were then shared in some of the classrooms,

and worked to inspire and motivate other women

وعملت كإلهام ومحفز لنساء أخريات

going through similar educations and situations.

يمرون بنفس الأوضاع والتجارب التعليمية.

Aisha, a teacher from Yemen, wrote,

(عائشة) وهي معلمة من اليمن، كتبت

"I sought education in order to be independent

"تعلمت حتى لا أعتمد على الرجل بكل شيء وأحس باستقلاليتي"

and to not count on men with everything."

أم السعد من أوائل اللاتي تعاملت معهن من مصر

One of my first subjects was Umm El-Saad from Egypt.

When we first met, she was barely able to write her name.

وعندما تقابلنا لأول مرة، كانت بالكاد تقدر أن تكتب اسمها

She was attending a nine-month literacy program

وكانت تحضر برنامجًا لمحو الأمية لمدة تسعة أشهر

ممول من إحدى المنظمات غير الحكومية المحلية (NGO)

run by a local NGO in the Cairo suburbs.

في أرياف القاهرة

Months later, she was joking that her husband

بعد عدة أشهر، قالت مازحة أن زوجها

had threatened to pull her out of the classes,

هدد بسحبها من البرنامج

as he found out that his now literate wife

عندما وجد أن زوجته التي أصبحت متعلمة الآن

was going through his phone text messages.

تفتش الرسائل النصية على جواله.

(ضحك) يا لك من مشاكسة يا أم السعد.

(Laughter)

Naughty Umm El-Saad.

Of course, that's not why Umm El-Saad joined the program.

بالتأكيد لم يكن هذا هو السبب لانضمام أم السعد للبرنامج.

لأنني رأيت كيف كانت تواقة لتتحكم

I saw how she was longing to gain control over her simple daily routines,

بتفاصيل حياتها الصغيرة التي نعتبرها من المسلمات

small details that we take for granted,

from counting money at the market to helping her kids in homework.

ابتداء من عدّ النقود إلى مساعدة أولادها في وظائفهم الدراسية

Despite her poverty and her community's mindset,

على الرغم من فقرها ونظرة المجتمع لها

which belittles women's education,

الذي يقلل من أهمية تعلم المرأة

Umm El-Saad, along with her Egyptian classmates,

أم السعد ورفيقاتها المصريات في البرنامج

was eager to learn how to read and write.

كن تواقات ليتعلمن كيف يكتبن ويقرأن

In Tunisia, I met Asma,

في تونس، قابلت أسماء

one of the four activist women I interviewed.

وهي إحدى الناشطات الأربع اللاتي قابلت.

The secular bioengineering student is quite active on social media.

طالبة الهندسة البيولوجية العلمانية هذه هي أيضا ناشطة بالتواصل الاجتماعي

Regarding her country, which treasured what has been called the Arab Spring,

فيما يخص دولتها التي تثمن ما سمي بـ (الربيع العربي) قالت:

she said, "I've always dreamt of discovering a new bacteria.

"لطالما حلمت باستكشاف بكتيريا جديدة أما الآن...

Now, after the revolution, we have a new one every single day."

وبعد الثورة، فلدينا نوع جديد كل يوم"

Asma was referring to the rise of religious fundamentalism in the region,

أسماء كانت تشير إلى ارتفاع التعصب الديني في المنطقة

which is another obstacle to women in particular.

والذي يعتبر عائقًا آخر أمام النساء بالتحديد

Out of all the women I met, Fayza from Yemen affected me the most.

من بين كل النساء اللاتي قابلت، فايزة من اليمن كانت الأكثر تأثيرا علي

Fayza was forced to drop out of school at the age of eight when she was married.

اضطرت فايزة لترك المدرسة بعمر 8 سنوات لأنها تزوجت

That marriage lasted for a year.

هذا الزواج استمر لمدة عام!

At 14, she became the third wife of a 60-year-old man,

في عمر الـ 14 أصبحت الزوجة الثالثة لرجل في الـ 60

and by the time she was 18, she was a divorced mother of three.

وفي عمر الـ 18 أصبحت أما مطلقة لثلاث أطفال

Despite her poverty,

على الرغم من فقرها

despite her social status as a divorcée in an ultra-conservative society,

ووضعها الاجتماعي كمطلقة في مجتمع محافظ جدًا

and despite the opposition of her parents to her going back to school,

ومعارضة أهلها لعودتها للتعليم

Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education.

علمت فايزة أن الطريق الوحيد لها لتتحكم بحياتها هو بتعلمها

She is now 26.

هي الآن في الـ 26

She received a grant from a local NGO

وحصلت على منحة من مؤسسة غير حكومية محلية (NGO)

to fund her business studies at the university.

لتمول دراستها في تخصص الاقتصاد في الجامعة

Her goal is to find a job, rent a place to live in,

هدفها هو أن تجد وظيفة وأن تستأجر بيتًا لتعيش فيه

and bring her kids back with her.

ولتحتضن أبنائها معها مرة أخرى

The Arab states are going through tremendous change,

الدول العربية تمر بتغييرات هائلة

and the struggles women face are overwhelming.

والتحديات التي تواجه النساء كبيرة جدًا

Just like the women I photographed,

مثل هؤلاء النسوة اللاتي صورت

I had to overcome many barriers to becoming the photographer I am today,

اضطرت أن أتخطى الحواجز لأصبح ما أنا عليه الآن

many people along the way telling me what I can and cannot do.

وكثير من الناس يخبرونني ما أو ما لا يمكنني أن أفعل

Umm El-Saad, Asma and Fayza, and many women across the Arab world,

أم السعد وأسماء وفايزة والكثيرات في العالم العربي

show that it is possible to overcome barriers to education,

أظهرن أنه بالإمكان تخطي الحواجز لأجل التعليم

which they know is the best means to a better future.

والذي عرفن أنه أفضل طريق لمستقبل أفضل

And here I would like to end with a quote by Yasmine,

وهنا أود أن انهي باقتباس من ياسمين،

one of the four activist women I interviewed in Tunisia.

وهي إحدى الناشطات الأربع اللاتي قابلت في تونس

Yasmine wrote,

ياسمين كتبت:

"Question your convictions.

"سائلي قناعاتك.

Be who you to want to be, not who they want you to be.

كوني من تريدين لا من يريدون.

Don't accept their enslavement, for your mother birthed you free."

لا تقبلي استعبادهم، فقد ولدتك أمك حرة".
