As an Arab female photographer,

،وەک کچێکی وێنەگری عەرەبی

I have always found ample inspiration for my projects in personal experiences.

زۆر جار لە ئەزموونی تایبەتییەوە .ئیلهامی پڕۆژەم بۆ دێت

The passion I developed for knowledge,

،پەرۆشییم بۆ زانیاری پەرەی سەند

which allowed me to break barriers towards a better life

وای لێکردم هەموو ئەو بەربەستانە ببڕم بۆ گەیشتن بە ژیانێکی باشتر

was the motivation for my project I Read I Write.

پرۆژەکەم .دەخوێنمەوە و دەنوسم' ھاندەرم بوو '

Pushed by my own experience,

،بە ئەزمونی خۆم ھەوڵمدا

as I was not allowed initially to pursue my higher education,

لەکاتێکدا کە دەرفەتی ،تەواو کردنی خوێندنی باڵام پێنەدرا

I decided to explore and document stories of other women

بڕیارمدا بە دوای ئەو بەڵگەنامانەدا بگەڕێم کە چیرۆکی ئافرەتان لەخۆ دەگێرن

who changed their lives through education,

ئەوانەی ڕێگەی پەروەدرە و فێرکردنەوە ،ژیانی خۆیان گۆڕی

while exposing and questioning the barriers they face.

.لەکاتێکدا ڕووبەڕووی لێپرسینەوە دەبوونەوە

I covered a range of topics that concern women's education,

لێکۆڵینەوەم لە چەند بابەتێکی ،پەیوەندیدار بە فێربوونی ژنان کرد

keeping in mind the differences among Arab countries

‎ بە لەبەرچاوگرتنی جیاوازیەکانی وڵاتە عەرەبییەکان

due to economic and social factors.

.بەھۆی کێشە کۆمەڵایەتی و ئابورییەوە

These issues include female illiteracy, which is quite high in the region;

یەکێک لە کێشەکان نەخوێندەواری ئافرەتە :ئەم ڕێژەیەش لەم ناوچەیە زۆر بەرزە

educational reforms; programs for dropout students;

چاکسازی پەروەردەی؛ پڕۆگرام بۆ ئەو فێرخوازانەی وازیان لە خوێندن هێناوە

and political activism among university students.

‎و چالاکەوانی سیاسی .ناو فێرخوازانی زانکۆ

As I started this work,

‎،کاتێک دەستم بەم کارە کرد

it was not always easy to convince the women to participate.

کارێکی ئاسان نەبوو ئەم ئافرەتانە .ڕازی بکەم بەشداربن

Only after explaining to them

دوای ئەوەی بۆم ڕوون کردنەوە

how their stories might influence other women's lives,

چۆن بەسەرھاتی ژیانیان کاریگەری ،لەسەر ژیانی ئافرەتانی تر دەبێ

how they would become role models for their own community, did some agree.

‎چۆن بۆ کۆمەڵگەی خۆیان .دەبنە نمونەیەکی باش، ھەندێکیان ڕازی بوون

Seeking a collaborative and reflexive approach,

‎ گەڕان بە دوای کاری هەرەوەزی و ،تێڕوانینی گونجاو

I asked them to write their own words and ideas

‎ داوام لێ کردن ووشە و بیرۆکەی خۆیان بنووسن

on prints of their own images.

.لەسەر وێنە چاپکراوەکانی خۆیان

Those images were then shared in some of the classrooms,

پاشان ئەم وێنانە لە ھەندێک ،لە پۆلەکان بڵاو کرانەوە

and worked to inspire and motivate other women

و کاری لەسەر ئیلهام و ھاندانی ژنانی تر کرد

going through similar educations and situations.

.کە بە ھەمان بارودۆخدا ژیانیان دەگوزەراند

Aisha, a teacher from Yemen, wrote,

،عائیشە، لە یەمەن مامۆستایە، نوسیویەتی

"I sought education in order to be independent

بەداوای خوێندن گەڕام" بۆ ئەوەی کەسێکی سەربەخۆ بم

and to not count on men with everything."

و لە ھەموو شتێکدا ".پشت بە پیاو نەبەستم

One of my first subjects was Umm El-Saad from Egypt.

یەکەم بابەتم لەسەر ئافرەتێکی مصری بوو .بە ناوی دایکی سعد

When we first met, she was barely able to write her name.

،کاتێک یەکەم جار چاومان پێک کەوت .بە ئاستەم توانی ناوی خۆی بنوسێت

She was attending a nine-month literacy program

بەشداری لە خولێکی خوێندەواریی نۆ-مانگیدا کردبوو

run by a local NGO in the Cairo suburbs.

لەلایەن ڕێکخراوێکی ناحکومی .لە دەرەوەی قاھیرە سەرپەرشتی دەکرا

Months later, she was joking that her husband

پاش چەند مانگێک، گاڵتەی دەکرد کە ھاوسەرەکەی

had threatened to pull her out of the classes,

ھەڕەشەی لێکردووە کە لە .قوتابخانە دەری دەهێنێت

as he found out that his now literate wife

کاتێک بۆی دەردەکەوێت ئێستا ژنە خوێندەوارەکەی

was going through his phone text messages.

.نامەکانی ناو مۆبایلەکەی دەخوێندەوە

Naughty Umm El-Saad.

.دایکی سعد هاروهاجە

Of course, that's not why Umm El-Saad joined the program.

بێگومان، ئەم ئافرەتە بۆ ئەم .مەبەستە بەشداری نەکرد

I saw how she was longing to gain control over her simple daily routines,

دەمبینی، کە چەند پەرۆشی زاڵبوون .بەسەر ڕۆتینیەکانی ژیانی ڕۆژانەی بوو

small details that we take for granted,

،ئەو وردەکاریانەی کە بایەخیان پێ نادەین

from counting money at the market to helping her kids in homework.

ژماردنی پارە لە مارکێتەکان و بۆ یارمەتی دانی منداڵەکانی

Despite her poverty and her community's mindset,

،سەرەڕای هەژاری و تێروانینی کۆمەڵگە

which belittles women's education,

،کە لە بەهای پەروەردەی ژنان کەم دەکەنەوە

Umm El-Saad, along with her Egyptian classmates,

،دایکی سعد، لەگەڵ هاوپۆلە مصریەکانی

was eager to learn how to read and write.

.زۆر بە پەرۆش بوون .بۆ فێربوونی بنوسن و بخوێندنەوە

In Tunisia, I met Asma,

،لە تونس، چاوم بە ئەسما کەوت

one of the four activist women I interviewed.

یەکێک بوو لەم چوار ئافرەتە چالاکەی کە چاوپێکەوتنم لەگەڵیان ئەنجامدا

The secular bioengineering student is quite active on social media.

ئەندازەی زیندەزانی بوو .و لە تۆڕە کۆمەڵاتییەکان چالاک بوو

Regarding her country, which treasured what has been called the Arab Spring,

تونس یەکێکە لەو وڵاتانەی کە بە ،بەهاری عەربی ناسراوە

she said, "I've always dreamt of discovering a new bacteria.

دەیوت، "من بەردەوام خەونم بە .دۆزینەوەی بەکتریای نۆی بینیووە

Now, after the revolution, we have a new one every single day."

،لە ئێستادا، لە دوای شۆڕشی بەهاری عەرەبی ".ھەموو رۆژێک دانەیەکی تر دەدۆزینەوە

Asma was referring to the rise of religious fundamentalism in the region,

ئەسما باسی سەرھەڵدانی بیری .دەمارگیری ئایینی لەو ناوچەیەدا دەکرد

which is another obstacle to women in particular.

.کە کۆسپێکی ترە لەبەردەم ئافرەتان

Out of all the women I met, Fayza from Yemen affected me the most.

فایزە کچە یەمەنیەکە. چیرۆکی ژیانی .لە هەموو ئافرەتەکانی تر کاریگەرتر بوو

Fayza was forced to drop out of school at the age of eight when she was married.

فایزە لە تەمەنی هەشت ساڵی لەو کاتەی .بە شوو درا و لە خوێندنگە دوورخرایەوە

That marriage lasted for a year.

.ئەم هاوسەرگیریە تا یەک ساڵ بەردەوام بوو

At 14, she became the third wife of a 60-year-old man,

‎لە تەمەنی ١٤ ساڵیدا، دەبێتە ،ژنی سێیەمی پیاوێکی تەمەن شەست ساڵی

and by the time she was 18, she was a divorced mother of three.

،و لەو کاتەی تەمەنی ھەژدە ساڵ بوو .ژنێکی تەڵاقدراوی خاوەن ٣ منداڵ بوو

Despite her poverty,

،سەڕەرای هەژاریەکەی

despite her social status as a divorcée in an ultra-conservative society,

سەڕەرای بارودۆخی وەک ژنێکی ،تەڵاقدراو لە کۆمەڵگەیەکی داخراو

and despite the opposition of her parents to her going back to school,

و سەڕەرای ئەو ڕێگرییەی ،دایک و باوکی بۆ گەڕانەوەی بۆ خوێندنگە

Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education.

فەیزا دەیزانی تاکە ڕێگە بۆ ئەوەی کۆنترۆلی .ژیانی خۆی پێ بکات خوێندن و فێربوونە

She is now 26.

.ئێستا تەمەنی ٢٦ ساڵە

She received a grant from a local NGO

لە لایەن ڕێکخراویێکی ناحکومی یارمەتی درا

to fund her business studies at the university.

و پارەی خوێندن لە بواری بەرێوەبردن .لە زانکۆ بۆ دابین کرا

Her goal is to find a job, rent a place to live in,

،ئامانجی بریتیە لە دۆزینەوەی کارێک ،بەکرێ گرتنی خانویەک بۆ ئەوەی تێدا بژی

and bring her kids back with her.

.و منداڵەکانی بھێنێتەوە لای خۆی

The Arab states are going through tremendous change,

‎وڵاتە عەرەبیەکان بەرەو گۆڕانکاریەکی ،گەورە و مەزن هەنگاو دەنێن

and the struggles women face are overwhelming.

و ئەو بەربەستانەی ئافرەەت ڕ.وبەرووی دەبێتەوە تاقەت پڕوکێنن

Just like the women I photographed,

،وەک ئەو ئافرەتانەی کە وێنەم گرتووە

I had to overcome many barriers to becoming the photographer I am today,

من بۆ بوونم بە وێنەگر لەڕۆژگاری ،ئەمڕۆ دەبوایە بەسەر گشت کۆسپەکان زاڵ بم

many people along the way telling me what I can and cannot do.

لەم گەشتەمدا لەم ئافرەتە بوێرانە فێربووم .کە چی بکەم و چی نەکەم

Umm El-Saad, Asma and Fayza, and many women across the Arab world,

دایکی ئەسعد، ئەسما و فایزە و زۆربەی ،ئافرەتان لەسەرتاسەری جیھانی عەرەبی

show that it is possible to overcome barriers to education,

دەیسەلمێنن کە دەکرێت بەسەر ئەو بەربەستانەدا زاڵبن کە ڕووبەڕووی دەبنەوە

which they know is the best means to a better future.

دەزانن بۆ داھاتویەکی باشتر .بە سوودترین شتە

And here I would like to end with a quote by Yasmine,

لێرە دەمەوێ بە وتەیەکی ،یاسمین کۆتای بە قسەکانم بهێنم

one of the four activist women I interviewed in Tunisia.

یەکێک بوو لەو چوار ئافرەتە چالاکەی .لە تونس چاوم پێکەوت

Yasmine wrote,

‎،یاسمین نووسی

"Question your convictions.

‎.باوەڕی خۆت بخە ژێر پرسیارەوە"

Be who you to want to be, not who they want you to be.

،ببە بەو کەسەی کە خۆت دەتەوێ ت .نەک ببی بەو کەسەی کە ئەوان دەیانەوێت

Don't accept their enslavement, for your mother birthed you free."

،چونکە تۆ بە ئازادی لەدایک بوویت ".بۆیە کۆیلایەتی ئەوانیش قبوڵ مەکەن
