وەک ئافرەتێکی عەرەبی وێنەگر،

هەمیشە ئیلهامی زۆرم لە ئەزموونە کەسییەکاندا بۆ پڕۆژەکانم دۆزیوەتەوە.

ئەو سۆزەی بۆ زانین هەمە،

ڕێگەی پێدام بەربەستەکان بشکێنم بەرەو ژیانێکی باشتر و

As an Arab female photographer,

هاندەر بوو بۆ خوێندنەوە و نووسینی پڕۆژەکانم.

I have always found ample inspiration for my projects in personal experiences.

بە ئەزموونی هانی خۆم داوە،

The passion I developed for knowledge,

لە سەرەتادا ڕێگەم پێنەدرا بەدواداچوون لە خوێندنم بکەن،

which allowed me to break barriers towards a better life

بڕیارم دا بە دوای بەڵگەنامە و چیرۆکی ژنانی تر بگەڕێم،

was the motivation for my project I Read I Write.

کە لە ڕێگەی پەروەردەوە ژیانی خۆیان گۆڕیوە،

Pushed by my own experience,

لە کاتی خستنەڕوو و پرسیارکردن لەو بەربەستانەی کەڕووبەڕووی دەبنەوە.

as I was not allowed initially to pursue my higher education,

کۆمەڵێک بابەتم داپۆشیوە کە پەیوەندی بە پەروەردەی ژنانەوە هەیە،

I decided to explore and document stories of other women

لەبیریت بێت، جیاوازی نێوان وڵاتانی عەرەبی،

who changed their lives through education,

بەهۆی لایەنی ئابووری و کۆمەڵایەتییەوە.

while exposing and questioning the barriers they face.

کێشەکان نەخوێندەواری مێینە لەخۆدەگرێت کە لە هەرێمەکەدا زۆر بەرزە:

I covered a range of topics that concern women's education,

چاکسازی پەروەردەیی؛ بەرنامەکان بۆ خوێندکارانی دەرچوو;

keeping in mind the differences among Arab countries

due to economic and social factors.

هەروەها چالاکی سیاسی لە نێو خوێندکارانی زانکۆدا.

These issues include female illiteracy, which is quite high in the region;

کاتێک دەستم بەم کارە کرد،

قایکردنی ژنان بۆ بەشداریکردن هەمیشە ئاسان نەبووە.

educational reforms; programs for dropout students;

تەنیا دوای ئەوەی بۆیان ڕوونکرایەوە

چۆن چیرۆکەکانیان ل کاریگەری لەسەر ژیانی ژنانی تر دەبێت،

and political activism among university students.

چۆن دەبنە پێشەنگ بۆ کۆمەڵگەی خۆیان.

As I started this work,

it was not always easy to convince the women to participate.

گەڕان بە دوای هاوکارێک.

Only after explaining to them

داوام لێکردن بیرۆکەکانی خۆیان بنووسن

how their stories might influence other women's lives,

how they would become role models for their own community, did some agree.

لەسەر چاپکردنی وێنەکانی خۆیان.

دواتر ئەو وێنانە بڵاوکرانەوە لە هەندێک لە پۆلەکاندا،

Seeking a collaborative and reflexive approach,

هەروەها کاری کرد تاکو ئیلهام ببەخشێت و هانی ژنانی تر بدات

I asked them to write their own words and ideas

بە بارودۆخ و پەروەردەیەکی هاوشێوەدا تێپەڕی.

on prints of their own images.

عائیشە مامۆستایەکیخەڵکی یەمەنە و نوسیویەتی،

Those images were then shared in some of the classrooms,

بەدوای پەروەردەدا گەڕام بە مەبەستی سەربەخۆ بێت

and worked to inspire and motivate other women

بۆ ئەوەی بە هەموو شتێک لەسەر پیاوان حساب نەکەن.

going through similar educations and situations.

یەکێک لە بابەتەکانی یەکەمم بریتی بوو لەو ئەو شتانەی کە لە میسر بوون.

Aisha, a teacher from Yemen, wrote,

کاتێک کە یەکەم جار بینیمان، بوو زۆر بە زەحمەت توانی ناوی بنووسێت.

"I sought education in order to be independent

بەشداری بەرنامەیەکی ٩ مانگی خوێندەواری کرد لەلایە ڕێکخراوی

and to not count on men with everything."

قازانج نەویستی ناوخۆیی لە قەراغی قاهیرە بەڕێوەدەچێت.

One of my first subjects was Umm El-Saad from Egypt.

چەند مانگێک دواتر گاڵتەی دەکرد کە مێردەکەی

هەڕەشەی ئەوەی کردبوو کە ڕایبکێشێتە دەرەوەی پۆل،

When we first met, she was barely able to write her name.

کە زانی هاوسەرە خوێندەوارەکەی ئێستای

She was attending a nine-month literacy program

بە پەیامە نوسراوەکانی تەلەفۆنەکەیدا تێپەڕیبوو.

run by a local NGO in the Cairo suburbs.

Months later, she was joking that her husband

بە دڵنیاییەوە، لەبەر ئەوە نییە ئم ئەلسەعد بەشداری بەرنامەکەی کرد

had threatened to pull her out of the classes,

as he found out that his now literate wife

من بینیم کە چۆن ئەو پەرۆشی بەدەست هێنانی بوو کۆنتڕۆڵکردن بەسەر ڕۆتینە سادەکانی

was going through his phone text messages.

(Laughter)

ڕۆژانەی ووردەکارییە بچووکەکان کە ئێمە دەیگرین بۆی

Naughty Umm El-Saad.

لە ژماردنی پارە لە بازاڕدا بۆ یارمەتیدانی منداڵەکانی لە ئەرکی ماڵەوە.

Of course, that's not why Umm El-Saad joined the program.

سەرەڕای هەژاریی وە عەقڵییەتی کۆمەڵگاکەی

I saw how she was longing to gain control over her simple daily routines,

کە پەروەدەی ژنان سەرزەنشت دەکات.

small details that we take for granted,

ئەی ئەلسەعد، لەگەڵ لە هەموو ئەو کەسانەدا کە لە هەمووی دەتانەوێت,

from counting money at the market to helping her kids in homework.

زۆر بەپەرۆش بوو بۆ فێربوونی چۆنیەتی خوێندنەوە و نووسین.

Despite her poverty and her community's mindset,

لە تونس، ئەسمام بینی,

which belittles women's education,

یەکێک لەو چوار ژنە چالاکوانە من چاوپێکەوتنم کرد.

Umm El-Saad, along with her Egyptian classmates,

خوێندکارە بایۆمەلۆجیە عەلمانییەکان لە تۆڕە کۆمەڵایەتییەکاندا زۆر چالاکە.

was eager to learn how to read and write.

سەبارەت بەوڵاتەکەی کە خەزێنەی تێدابوو ئەوەی پێی دەوترێت بەهاری عەرەبی.

In Tunisia, I met Asma,

one of the four activist women I interviewed.

ئەو وتی: “من هەمیشە خەونم بینی لە دۆزینەوەی بەکتریایەکی نوێ

The secular bioengineering student is quite active on social media.

ئێستا دوای شۆڕش ئێمە هەموو ڕۆژێک نوێمان هەیە.

Regarding her country, which treasured what has been called the Arab Spring,

ئەسما ئاماژەی بە بەرزبوونەوەی دەکرد لەبنەچەی ئایینی لەهەرێمدا،

she said, "I've always dreamt of discovering a new bacteria.

کە بەربەستێکی ترە بۆ ژنان بەتایبەتی.

Now, after the revolution, we have a new one every single day."

لە هەموو ئەو ژنانەی کە بینیم فەیزە لە یەمەنەوە زۆرترین کاریگەری لەسەر من کرد.

Asma was referring to the rise of religious fundamentalism in the region,

فەیزە ناچارکرا واز لەخوێندن بهێنێت له‌ تەمەنی هەشت ساڵیدا کاتێک هاوسەرگیری دەکرد.

which is another obstacle to women in particular.

ئەو هاوسەرگیرییە بۆ ماوەی ساڵێک بەردەوام بوو.

Out of all the women I met, Fayza from Yemen affected me the most.

لە 14 ساڵیدا بوو بە ژنی سێیەم لە پیاوێکی تەمەن 60 ساڵدا،

Fayza was forced to drop out of school at the age of eight when she was married.

کاتێک تەمەنی 18 ساڵی بوو ئەو دایکێکی تەڵاقدار بوو لە سێ.

سەرەڕای هەژارییەکەی

That marriage lasted for a year.

سەرەرای باری کۆمەڵایەتی وەک دیڤیۆرسی لە کۆمەڵگایەکی زۆر کۆنەپارێزدا

At 14, she became the third wife of a 60-year-old man,

and by the time she was 18, she was a divorced mother of three.

و سەرەڕای دژایەتی دایک و باوکی بۆ گەڕانەوە بۆ قوتابخانە

Despite her poverty,

فەیزە دەیزانی کە تەنیا ڕێگاکەیە بۆ كۆنتڕۆڵ کردنی ژیانی لە ڕێگەی پەروەردەوە بوو.

despite her social status as a divorcée in an ultra-conservative society,

ئێستا ٢٦ ساڵە.

ئەو گرەنتی وەرگرت لە ئێن جی ئۆی ناوخۆییەوە

and despite the opposition of her parents to her going back to school,

بۆ پارەدان بە خوێندنی بازرگانی لە زانکۆ

Fayza knew that her only way to control her life was through education.

ئامانجەکەی ئەوەیە کە کارێک بدۆزرێتەوە ئەو شوێنەی کە لێی دەژیت بەکرێ

وە منداڵەکانی لەگەڵ ئەو بهێنمەوە.

She is now 26.

She received a grant from a local NGO

دەوڵەتانی عەرەبیش تێدەپەڕن ئەوە چیە؟

to fund her business studies at the university.

و تێکۆشانی ژنان رووبەڕووی دەبێتەوە زۆر زۆر سەرکەون

Her goal is to find a job, rent a place to live in,

وەک ئەو ژنانەی کە وێنەم گرت.

and bring her kids back with her.

پێویست بوو بەسەر چەندین بەربەستدا زاڵ بم بۆ ئەوەی ببینم بە وێنەگر کە ئەمڕۆم

The Arab states are going through tremendous change,

خەڵکێکی زۆر بەدرێژایی ڕێگاکە پێم بڵێ چی دەتوانم و ناتوانم بیکەم

and the struggles women face are overwhelming.

لە هەموو ئەو شتانەی کە لە ناودا بوو وە چەندین ژن لە سەرانسەری جیهانی عەرەبیدا

Just like the women I photographed,

I had to overcome many barriers to becoming the photographer I am today,

نیشان بدە کە دەکرێت بۆ زاڵبوون بەسەر بەربەستەکانی پەروەردەدا

many people along the way telling me what I can and cannot do.

کە دەزانن باشترین ڕێگایە بۆ داهاتوویەکی باشتر

Umm El-Saad, Asma and Fayza, and many women across the Arab world,

وە لێرە حەز دەکەم کۆتایی پێ بهێنم بە وتەیەکی یاسمین

show that it is possible to overcome barriers to education,

یەکێک لەو چوار ژنە چالاکوانە من لە تونس چاوپێکەوتنم کرد.

which they know is the best means to a better future.

لە باوەڕەکانت پرسیار بکە

ئەو کەسەی کە دەتەوێت بیکەیت ئەو کەسەی کە ئەوان دەیانەوێت ئێوە بن

And here I would like to end with a quote by Yasmine,

بەندکردنی ئەوان قبوڵ مەکە بۆ دایکت تۆی ئازاد لە دایک کرد

one of the four activist women I interviewed in Tunisia.
