Meet Tony. He's my student.

‎چاوپێکەوتنی تۆنی. ئەو خوێندکارمە.

He's about my age,

‎لە تەمەنی مندایە،

and he's in San Quentin State Prison.

‎و لە زیندانی ویلایەتی سان قوینتینە.

When Tony was 16 years old,

one day, one moment,

"It was mom's gun.

Just flash it, scare the guy. He's a punk.

Then last minute, I'm thinking, 'Can't do this. This is wrong.'

My buddy says, 'C'mon, let's do this.'

And those three words, Tony's going to remember,

‎و ئەم سێ وشەیە، تۆنی بیریدەمێنێتەوە،

because the next thing he knows, he hears the pop.

There's the punk on the ground, puddle of blood.

And that's felony murder --

25 to life, parole at 50 if you're lucky,

and Tony's not feeling very lucky.

So when we meet in my philosophy class in his prison

and I say, "In this class, we will discuss the foundations of ethics,"

Tony interrupts me.

"What are you going to teach me about right and wrong?

I know what is wrong. I have done wrong.

I am told every day,

‎هەموو ڕۆژێک دەڵێم،

by every face I see, every wall I face, that I am wrong.

‎ھەر ڕوخسارێک ببینم، ھەر دیوارێک ‎ڕووبەڕوی دەبمەوە، کە من هەڵەم.

If I ever get out of here, there will always be a mark by my name.

‎گەر لێرە بڕۆمە دەرەوە، ‎دەبێت بە پەڵەیەک بەسەر ناوەکەمەوە.

I'm a convict; I am branded 'wrong.'

من تاوانبارم؛ من نیشانەکەم 'ھەڵەیە.'

What are you going to tell me about right and wrong?"

‎''چیم فێر دەکەن دەربارەی ڕاست و هەڵە؟

So I say to Tony,

بۆیە بە تۆنی دەڵێم،

"Sorry, but it's worse than you think.

‎"ببورە، بەڵام ئەوە خراپترە ‎لەوەی بیری لێ دەکەیتەوە.

You think you know right and wrong?

پێتوایە ڕاست و ھەڵە دەزانی؟

Then can you tell me what wrong is?

دواتر دەتوانی پێمبڵێیت ھەڵە چییە؟

No, don't just give me an example.

نەخێر، تەنھا نموونەیەکم پێمەدە.

I want to know about wrongness itself, the idea of wrong.

دەمەوێ دەربارەی خودی ھەڵەبوون بزانم، بیرۆکەی ھەڵە.

What is that idea?

ئەو بیرۆکەیە چییە؟

What makes something wrong?

چی وا لە شتێک دەکات ھەڵە بێت؟

How do we know that it's wrong? Maybe you and I disagree.

‎چۆن دەزانین ئەوە هەڵەیە؟ ‎لەوانەیە من و تۆ هاوڕا نەبین.

Maybe one of us is wrong about the wrong.

‎لەوانەیە یەکێکمان هەڵەبین لەبارەی هەڵەکە.

Maybe it's you, maybe it's me -- but we're not here to trade opinions;

لەوانەیە تۆ بیت، یان من-- بۆ بازرگانیکردن بە

everyone's got an opinion.

بیرۆکەمان لێرە نین؛ ھەمووان بیرۆکەیان ھەیە.

We are here for knowledge.

ئێمە لێرەین بۆ زانیاری.

Our enemy is thoughtlessness. This is philosophy."

‎دوژمنمان بێ ئاگایە. ئەمە فەلسەفیە."

And something changes for Tony.

و شتێک بۆ تۆنی دەگۆڕێت.

"Could be I'm wrong. I'm tired of being wrong.

‎"دەکرێ هەڵەبم. ماندوو بووم لە هەڵە کردن.

I want to know what is wrong.

دەمەوێ بزانم ھەڵە چییە.

I want to know what I know."

دەمەوێت بزانم چی دەزانم."

What Tony sees in that moment is the project of philosophy,

‎تۆنی چی لە پڕۆژە فەلسەفیەکەی تێگەشت بوو،

the project that begins in wonder --

پڕۆژەکە کە بە سەرسوڕمان دەست پێ دەکات--

what Kant called "admiration and awe

کانت چی دەڵێت بە " ڕازیبوون و ترس

at the starry sky above and the moral law within."

‎ئەستێرەکانی ئاسمان لە سەرەوەن ‎و یاسای ڕەوشتیش بەهەمان شێوە."

What can creatures like us know of such things?

‎چ جانەوەرێ وەک ئێمە ‎ دەکرێ ئەمانە بزانێت؟

It is the project that always takes us back to the condition of existence --

پڕۆژەیەکە هەمیشە دەمانباتەوە بۆ دۆخی بوون --

what Heidegger called "the always already there."

ھایدگە چی دەڵێت بە " پێشتر ھەمیشە لەوێ بووە."

It is the project of questioning what we believe and why we believe it --

‎پڕۆژەکی پرسیارکرنە کە بڕوامان ‏‎بە چییە و بۆچی بڕوامان پێیەتی--

what Socrates called "the examined life."

‎سوقرات چی دەڵێت بە "تاقیکردنەوەی ژیان."

Socrates, a man wise enough to know that he knows nothing.

سوقرات، ئەو پیاوە زانایەی کە دەیزانی ھیچ نازانێت.

Socrates died in prison,

سوقرات لە بەندیخانە مرد،

his philosophy intact.

فەلسەفەکەی ماوەتەوە.

So Tony starts doing his homework.

ئیتر تۆنی دەستی کرد بە کردنی ئەرکی ماڵەوە.

He learns his whys and wherefores, his causes and correlations,

‎فێری بۆچی بوو، ‎هۆکار و ھاوپەیوەندیەکانی،

his logic, his fallacies.

‎ژیربێژیەکەی، بەهەڵەدا چوونی.

Turns out, Tony's got the philosophy muscle.

His body is in prison, but his mind is free.

Tony learns about the ontologically promiscuous,

the epistemologically anxious,

the ethically dubious, the metaphysically ridiculous.

So when he gives me his final paper,

in which he argues that the categorical imperative

is perhaps too uncompromising

وادیار بوو بیر و ڕای خۆی ناگۆڕێت

to deal with the conflict that affects our everyday

‎کار کردن لەم کێشەیە ‎کاریگەری لەسەرماندەبێت

and challenges me to tell him

و بەرەنگاری کردمەوە کە پێی بڵێم

whether therefore we are condemned to moral failure,

‎لەبەر ئەوەی بڕیارمانداوە بەشکستی ڕەوشتی،

I say, "I don't know.

دەڵێم، " نازانم.

Let us think about that."

ڕێگەمان بدە بیری لێ بکەینەوە."

Because in that moment, there's no mark by Tony's name;

‎چونکە لەو کات، نیشانەیەک نەبوو لەسەر ناوی؛

it's just the two of us standing there.

تەنھا دووانمان لەوێ وەستابووین.

It is not professor and convict,

ئەمە پڕۆفیسۆر و تاوانبار نیە،

it is just two minds ready to do philosophy.

تەنھا دوو مێشکن بۆ فەلسەفەکردن.

And I say to Tony,

وە من بە تۆنی دەڵێم،

"Let's do this."

" با ئەمە بکەین."
