The decorative use of wire in southern Africa

بەکارھێنانی داو بۆ ڕازاندنەوە لە ئەفریقا

dates back hundreds of years.

But modernization actually brought communication

بەڵام نوێگەری پەیوەندی و

and a whole new material, in the form of telephone wire.

کۆمەڵێک ماددەی لە شێوەی وایەری تەلەفۆن لەگەڵ خۆی دەھێنێت.

Rural to urban migration meant that newfound industrial materials

کۆچی لادێکان بۆ شارەکان، دۆزینەوەی کۆمەڵێک کانزایی بازرگانی بەدوا دادێت

started to replace hard-to-come-by natural grasses.

و بە دەست ھێنانی شتی دەست کرد قورس دەبێت.

So, here you can see the change

بۆیە، لێرە دەتوانیت ئەم گۆڕانکاریانە ببینیت

from use -- starting to use contemporary materials.

کە بۆ کانزایی سەردەم بەکار دێت.

These pieces date back from the '40s to the late '50s.

ئەم پارچانە بۆ ٤٠ کان و ٥٠ کان دەگەڕێنەوە.

In the '90s, my interest and passion for transitional art forms

لە ٩٠ کاندا، ئارەزووی ھونەری گۆڕانکاریم ھەبوو

led me to a new form,

کە منی بۆ قۆناغێکیت گواستەوە،

لە کامپێکی بچووکی دەرەوەی دوربانەوە دەست پێ دەکات.

which came from a squatter camp outside Durban.

And I got the opportunity to start working with this community

ھەلی کار کردن لەگەڵ ئەم کۆمەڵگەیە بۆ ڕەخسا

at that point, and started developing, really,

لەم کاتەدا کە سەرەتایی بەرەو پێشچوون بوو

and mentoring them in terms of scale, in terms of the design.

And the project soon grew from five to 50 weavers in about a year.

بەشداربووانی پڕۆژەکە لە ساڵێک دا لە ٥ کەس بۆ ٥٠ کەس بەرز بوویەوە.

Soon we had outgrown the scrap yards, what they could provide,

زۆر زوو ماددەی خاومان نەما تا کاری لەسەر بکەین و کارەکان خێراتر بوو،

so we coerced a wire manufacturer to help us,

بۆیە پەنامان بردە بەر بەرھەم ھێنەری داو،

and not only to supply the materials on bobbins,

تەنھا داوای داومان لێ نەکردن، بەڵکو،

but to produce to our color specifications.

داوامان کرد ڕەنگی تایبەتمان بۆ بەرھەم بھێنن.

At the same time, I was thinking, well,

لە ھەمان کاتدا بیرم دەکردەوە،

there's lots of possibility here to produce contemporary products,

ھەڵی بەرھەم ھێنانی کاڵایی پێویستە سەردەمییانە لێرە بەردەستە،

away from the ethnic, a little bit more contemporary.

دوور لە ناوچەگەرایی، بەڵکو کاڵایی سەردەمیانە.

So I developed a whole range around -- mass-produced range --

بۆیە، کۆمەڵێک کاڵام بەرھەم ھێنا، بە ڕێژەی بەرز

that obviously fitted into a much higher-end decor market

کە بە ئاشکرا بۆ بازاڕ کردن لە دیکۆر گونجاوتر بوو

that could be exported and also service our local market.

دەکرا ھەناردە بکرێت یان لە بازاڕی ناوەخۆیی بفرۆشرێت.

We started experimenting, as you can see, in terms of shapes,

دەستمان بە تاقی کردنەوە کرد، وەک دەبینن، لەم شێوەوە دەستمان پێ کرد،

forms. The scale became very important,

ڕێژەی بەرھەم ھێنان گرنگ بوو.

and it's become our pet project. It's successful,

پڕۆژەکەمان خۆشەویست و بە سوود بوو. سەری گرت،

it's been running for 12 years. And we supply the Conran shops,

١٢ ساڵە بەردەوامین، پێداویستیەکانی دووکانەکانی کۆنران دابین دەکەین،

and Donna Karan, and so it's kind of great.

بەھەمان شێوە دۆنا کاران، پڕۆژەیەکی نایابە.

This is our group, our main group of weavers.

ئەمە گروپەکەی ئێمەیە، کرێکارە سەرەکیەکانی چنینن.

They come on a weekly basis to Durban.

They all have bank accounts.

They've all moved back to the rural area where they came from.

It's a weekly turnaround of production.

This is the community that I originally showed you the slide of.

ئەمە ئەم کۆمەڵگەیە کە سەرەتا خستمە ڕوو.

And that's also modernized today,

لە ئێستادا، بەرەو پێش چووە.

and it's supporting work for 300 weavers.

و پاڵپشتی لە ٣٠٠ کارمەندی چنین دەکات.

And the rest says it all.

ھەموو شتەکانیتریش دیارن.
