Sports mania:

Okay, religious mania:

そして、宗教マニア

there's rapture, there's weeping,

歓喜、そして涙、

there's visions.

世界観があります

Manias can be good.

マニアは良い事をもたらしたり、

Manias can be alarming.

恐怖をあおったり

または、命取りになることもあります

Or manias can be deadly.

The world has a new mania.

世界には新しいマニアが出現しました

A mania for learning English.

英語勉強マニアです

Listen as Chinese students practice their English,

How many people are trying to learn English worldwide?

JW：世界中でどれぐらいの人達が英語を学んでいるのでしょうか？

Two billion of them.

20億人です

JW：ラテンアメリカで、

in Southeast Asia,

and most of all, in China.

If you're a Chinese student,

you start learning English in the third grade, by law.

3年生から英語を習い始めます、法律により

That's why this year,

China will become the world's largest English-speaking country.

Why English?

何故英語なのか？一言で言えば「機会」です

In a single word: opportunity.

より良い生活、より良い職を得るための機会

Opportunity for a better life, a job,

to be able to pay for school, or put better food on the table.

学費を払える様になるため、より良いものを食べる為の機会です

Imagine a student taking a giant test for three full days.

ある学生が丸3日かけて試験を受けるところを想像してください

Her score on this one test literally determines her future.

この試験の成績により

文字通り彼女の将来は決まるのです

She studies 12 hours a day

for three years to prepare.

Twenty-five percent of her grade is based on English.

It's called the gaokao, and 80 million high school Chinese students

The intensity to learn English

is almost unimaginable, unless you witness it.

T (yelling more loudly): I want to change my life!

JW：それで英語マニアは良いのか、悪いのか？

JW: So is English mania good or bad?

Is English a tsunami, washing away other languages?

英語は他の言語を洗い流してしまう

津波なのか？　そうでは無いでしょう

Not likely.

English is the world's second language.

英語は世界中で使われる外国語です

Your native language is your life.

あなたの母語はあなたの人生です

But with English you can become part of a wider conversation --

しかし英語により、より大きな会話に参加できる様になります

a global conversation about global problems,

世界規模の問題を話し合う世界規模の会話

like climate change or poverty,

気候変動や貧困など

or hunger or disease.

または飢えや病気

The world has other universal languages.

世界は他にも普遍的な言語があります

Mathematics is the language of science.

数学は科学での言語ですし

Music is the language of emotions.

音楽は感情の言語です

And now English is becoming the language of problem-solving.

そして英語は今、問題解決の為の言語になろうとしています

Not because America is pushing it,

アメリカが後押ししているからではなく、

but because the world is pulling it.

世界がそれを求めているからです

英語マニアというのは転換点です

So English mania is a turning point.

Like the harnessing of electricity in our cities,

我々の街で電気が使える様になる様に、

またはベルリンの壁崩壊の様に

or the fall of the Berlin Wall,

English represents hope

英語はより良い未来への

for a better future --

象徴です

a future where the world has a common language

世界に共通の問題を解決する為の言語が

to solve its common problems.
