When I turned 19, I started my career

کاتێک بووم بە ١٩، کاری خۆم دەستپێکرد

as the first female photojournalist

وەک یەکەم ئافرەتی وێنەگری ڕۆژنامەوان

in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

لە کەرتی غەزە، فەلەستین.

My work as a woman photographer

کارەکەی من وەک وێنەگری ئافرەت

was considered a serious insult

بە سوکایەتی دادەنرێت

to local traditions,

بۆ نەریتە ناوخۆییەکان،

and created a lasting stigma

و نەنگییەکی بەردەوامیشی دروست دەکرد

for me and my family.

The male-dominated field made my presence

unwelcome by all possible means.

They made clear that a woman

must not do a man's job.

Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me

ئاژانسەکانی وێنە لە غەزە ڕەتیانکردەوە مەشق بە من بکەن

because of my gender.

لەبەر ڕەگەزەکەم.

The "No" sign was pretty clear.

نیشانەی “نەخێر” زۆر ڕوون بوو.

Three of my colleagues

سێ لە هاوکارەکانم

went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area

ئەوەندە دوور منیان برد بۆ ئەوەی بە ناوچەیەکی هەوای کراوەم بگەیەنن

where the explosion sounds

کە دەنگی تەقینەوە

were the only thing I could hear.

تاکە دەنگ بوو کە دەمتوانی گوێبیستی بم.

Dust was flying in the air,

تۆز لە هەوادا دەفڕی،

and the ground was shaking like a swing beneath me.

و ئەرزەکە وەک ئەوەی لە ژێرمدا بجوڵێتەوە دەلەرزی.

I only realized we weren't there to document the event

من تازە بۆم دەرکەوتبوو ئێمە بۆ وەرگرتنی بەڵگەی ڕووداوەکە لەوێ نەبووین

when the three of them got back into the armored Jeep

کاتێک سێ لەوان گەڕانەوە ناو جیپە زرێپۆشەکە

and drove away, waving and laughing,

و دوورکەوتنەوە، دەستیان ڕادەوەشاند و پێدەکەنین،

leaving me behind in the open air strike zone.

بەجێیان هێشتم لە ناوچەی هەوا کراوەکە.

For a moment, I felt terrified,

بۆ ساتێک، هەستم بە ترس کرد،

humiliated, and sorry for myself.

ڕیسوابوو، و بە داخەوە بووم بۆ خۆم.

My colleagues' action was not

کاردانەوەی هاوکارەکانم′

the only death threat I have received,

تاکە هەڕەشەی مەرگ نەبوو کە پێم گەیشتبوو،

but it was the most dangerous one.

بەڵکو مەترسیدارترین دانە بوو.

The perception of women's life in Gaza

تێڕوانینی ژیانی ئافرەتان لە غەزە

is passive.

نادیارە.

Until a recent time, a lot of women were not allowed

تا ئەم دواییانە، زۆربەی ئافرەتەکان ڕێگایان پێ نەدەدرا

to work or pursue education.

تاوەکو کاربکەن یان بە دوای خوێندندا بچن.

At times of such doubled war including

لو کاتی ئەو جەنگە دوو بەرەکییەدا لەوانە

both social restrictions on women

هەردوو سنوردارکردنی کۆمەڵایەتی بۆ سەر ئافرەتان

and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,

و ناکۆکی نێوان ئیسرائیل-فەلەستین،

women's dark and bright stories were fading away.

چیڕۆکی تاریک و ڕوونی ئافرەتان کاڵبوونەوە.

To men, women's stories were seen

بۆ پیاوەکان، چیرۆکی ئافرەتەکان

as inconsequential.

وەکو شتێکی بێ مانا دەبیندرا.

I started paying closer attention

دەستم کرد بە گرینگیدانی زیاتر

to women's lives in Gaza.

بەو ژنانەی لە غەزەدا دەژیان.

Because of my gender, I had access

بەهۆی ڕەگەزەکەمەوە، من دەسەڵاتم هەبوو

to worlds where my colleagues were forbidden.

بۆئەو شوێنانەی بۆ هاوکارەکانم قەدەغە بوون.

Beyond the obvious pain and struggle,

بەدەر لە ئازار و تێکۆشانی ئاشکرا،

there was a healthy dose

دۆزێکی تەندروست هەبوو

of laughter and accomplishments.

لە پێکەنین و ئەنجام.

In front of a police compound in Gaza City

لەبەردەم یەکەیەکی پۆلیسی شاری غەزە

during the first war in Gaza,

لە کاتی جەنگی یەکەم لە غەزە،

an Israeli air raid managed to destroy the compound

هێرشێکی ئاسمانی ئیسرائیلی توانی ئەو یەکەیە تێکبشکێنێت

and break my nose.

و لوتی منیش بشکێنێت.

For a moment, all I saw was white, bright white,

بۆ ساتێک، هەموو ئەوەی کە دەمبینی سپی بوو، سپییەکی ڕوناک،

like these lights.

وەک ئەم ڕوناکییە.

I thought to myself I either got blind

وا بیرمکردەوە یان کوێر بووم

or I was in heaven.

یان لە بەهەشتدا بووم.

By the time I managed to open my eyes,

بە پێی کات توانیم چاوم بکەمەوە،

I had documented this moment.

ئەو ساتەم لەپێش چاوە.

Mohammed Khader, a Palestinian worker

موحەمەد خدر،

who spent two decades in Israel,

کە دوو دەیەی لە ئیسرائیل بەڕێکردووە،

as his retirement plan,

وەک پلانی خانەنشینی،

he decided to build a four-floor house,

بڕیاریدا خانوویەکی چوار- نهۆمی دروست بکات،

only by the first field operation at his neighborhood,

تەنیا بە ئۆپەراسیۆنی مەیدانی لە گەڕەکەکەی خۆی،

the house was flattened to the ground.

خانوەکە تەخت کرابوو لەگەڵ زەویدا.

Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised

هیچ شتێک نەمابوو جگە لەو کۆترانەی گەورەی کردبوون

and a jacuzzi, a bathtub

و جاکوزی، حەوزی خۆ شوشتن

that he got from Tel Aviv.

کە لە تەل ئەبیب هێنابووی.

Mohammed got the bathtub

موحەمەد حەوزی خۆ شوشتنەکەی

on the top of the rubble

لەسەرەوەی خۆڵ و خاشاکەکە دۆزیەوە

and started giving his kids

و دەستی کرد بە پێدانی

an every morning bubble bath.

هەموو بەیانییەک حەمامێکی بڵقاوی.

My work is not meant to hide the scars of war,

کاری من ئەوە نییە کە ترسناکییەکانی جەنگ بشارێتەوە،

but to show the full frame

بەڵکو بۆ نیشاندانی چوارچێوەیەکی تەواو

of unseen stories of Gazans.

لە چیرۆکە نەبینراوەکانی دانیشتوانی غەزە.

As a Palestinian female photographer,

وەکو وێنەگرێکی ئافرەتی فەلەستینی،

the journey of struggle, survival and everyday life

گەشتێکی خەبات، ڕزگار بوون و ژیانی ڕۆژانە

has inspired me to overcome the community taboo

ئیلهامی پێم بەخشی بۆ زاڵبوون بەسەر تابووی کۆمەڵگادا

and see a different side of war and its aftermath.

و بینینی لایەنێکی جیاوازی جەنگ و دەرئەنجامەکەی.

I became a witness with a choice:

من دەبم بە شایەتحاڵ بە هەڵبژاردنێک:

to run away or stand still.

بۆ ئەوەی ڕا بکەم یان بمێنمەوە.
