Eman Mohammed: The courage to tell a hidden story

When I turned 19, I started my career

जब मैं १९ वर्ष की हुई, तब मैंने अपनी जीविका आरम्भ करी

as the first female photojournalist

पहली महिला छाया पत्रकार की तरह

in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

फिलिस्तीन की गाज़ा पट्टी में

My work as a woman photographer

एक महिला छायाकार के रूप में मेरा काम

was considered a serious insult

एक गंभीर अपमान माना गया

to local traditions,

स्थानीय परंपराओं के लिए

and created a lasting stigma

यह स्थायी कलंक बन गया

for me and my family.

मेरे और मेरे परिवार के लिए

The male-dominated field made my presence

पुरुष प्रधान क्षेत्र ने हर संभव तरीके से मेरी उपस्थिति को

unwelcome by all possible means.

अनिष्ट कर दिया

They made clear that a woman

उन्होंने स्पष्ट कर दिया कि एक महिला को

must not do a man's job.

पुरुषों का काम नहीं करना चाहिए

Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me

गाज़ा में छाया संस्थानों ने मुझे प्रशिक्षित करने से मना कर दिया

because of my gender.

मेरे लिंग की वजह से

The "No" sign was pretty clear.

"नहीं" काफी स्पष्ट था

Three of my colleagues

मेरे तीन सहकर्मी मुझे

went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area

जंग के खुले मैदान में जितनी दूर हों सके लेकर गए

where the explosion sounds

जहाँ मैं सिर्फ विस्फोट की ध्वनियाँ ही

were the only thing I could hear.

सुन पा रही थी

Dust was flying in the air,

हवा में धूल उड़ रही थी

and the ground was shaking like a swing beneath me.

और मेरे नीचे की ज़मीन झूले की तरह हिल रही थी

I only realized we weren't there to document the event

मुझे बाद में एहसास हुआ कि हम वहाँ घटना को दस्तावेज़ करने नहीं गए थे

when the three of them got back into the armored Jeep

जब वो तीनों बख़्तरबंद जीप में बैठ के

and drove away, waving and laughing,

मेरी ओर हाथ हिलाकर, मुस्कुराते हुए वापिस चले गये

leaving me behind in the open air strike zone.

मुझे जंग के खुले मैदान में अकेला छोड़कर

For a moment, I felt terrified,

एक क्षण के लिए, मुझे भयभीत

humiliated, and sorry for myself.

अपमानित महसूस हुआ, खुद के लिए काफी खेद हुआ

My colleagues' action was not

मेरे सहकर्मियों के द्वारा दी गयी

the only death threat I have received,

मौत की धमकी पहली नहीं थी

but it was the most dangerous one.

परन्तु सबसे खतरनाक थी.

The perception of women's life in Gaza

गाज़ा में महिलाओं के जीवन की धारणा

is passive.

निष्क्रीय है

Until a recent time, a lot of women were not allowed

हाल ही तक, काफी महिलाओं को

to work or pursue education.

काम या शिक्षा प्राप्त करने की अनुमति नहीं थी

At times of such doubled war including

ऐसे दुगने युद्ध के समय जिसमें

both social restrictions on women

महिलाओं पर सामाजिक प्रतिबंध था

and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,

और इजरायल - फिलीस्तीनियों में संघर्ष,

women's dark and bright stories were fading away.

महिलाओं की काली एवम चमकदार कहानियाँ लुप्त होती जा रहीं थी

To men, women's stories were seen

पुरुषों के लिए, महिलाओं की कहानियाँ

as inconsequential.

महत्वहीन थी.

I started paying closer attention

मैने गाज़ा में महिलाओं के जीवन पर

to women's lives in Gaza.

करीब से ध्यान देना शुरू कर दिया

Because of my gender, I had access

मेरे लिंग की वजह से मुझे वहाँ जाने की अनुमति थी

to worlds where my colleagues were forbidden.

जहाँ मेरे सहकर्मियों का जाना वर्जित था

Beyond the obvious pain and struggle,

सपष्ट दर्द और संघर्ष के परे,

there was a healthy dose

एक स्वस्थ खुराक थी

of laughter and accomplishments.

हँसी और उपलब्धियों की

In front of a police compound in Gaza City

गाज़ा शहर में पुलिस परिसर के सामने

during the first war in Gaza,

गाजा में पहले युद्ध के दौरान

an Israeli air raid managed to destroy the compound

एक इजरायली हवाई हमला, परिसर को नष्ट करने में

and break my nose.

और मेरी नाक तोड़ने में कामयाब रहा.

For a moment, all I saw was white, bright white,

एक क्षण के लिए तो मुझे सब कुछ सफ़ेद, चमकदार सफ़ेद दिखाई दिया,

like these lights.

इन रोशनियों की तरह

I thought to myself I either got blind

मुझे लगा या तो में अंधी हो गयी हुँ

or I was in heaven.

या स्वर्ग में आ गयी हुँ

By the time I managed to open my eyes,

जब तक मैने अपनी आँखें खोली

I had documented this moment.

तब तक मैने उस क्षण को दर्ज कर लिए था

Mohammed Khader, a Palestinian worker

मुहम्मद खादर, एक फिलिस्तीनी कार्यकर्ता

who spent two decades in Israel,

जिन्होने दो दशक इसराइल में गुज़ारे,

as his retirement plan,

अपनी सेवानिवृत्ति योजना के रूप में,

he decided to build a four-floor house,

उन्होने एक चार मंजिल घर बनाने का फैसला किया,

only by the first field operation at his neighborhood,

the house was flattened to the ground.

Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised

and a jacuzzi, a bathtub

that he got from Tel Aviv.

वह तेल अवीव से लाये थे

Mohammed got the bathtub

मुहम्मद बाथटब को उठा कर

on the top of the rubble

मलबे के शीर्ष पर ले आये

and started giving his kids

और अपने बच्चों को

an every morning bubble bath.

हर प्रातः उसमें बुलबुला स्नान देना शुरू कर दिया

My work is not meant to hide the scars of war,

मेरा काम युद्ध के निशान छिपाना नहीं,

but to show the full frame

बल्कि गाज़न्स की

of unseen stories of Gazans.

अनदेखी कहानियों को पूर्ण रूप से दिखाना है

As a Palestinian female photographer,

एक फिलिस्तीनी महिला फोटोग्राफर के रूप में,

the journey of struggle, survival and everyday life

संघर्ष , उत्तरजीविता और रोजमर्रा की जिंदगी ने

has inspired me to overcome the community taboo

मुझे समुदाय वर्जना से उभरने के लिए प्रेरित किया है

and see a different side of war and its aftermath.

और युद्ध और उसके परिणाम के अलग पक्ष को देखने के लिए प्रेरित किया है

I became a witness with a choice:

मैं एक विकल्प के साथ एक गवाह बन गई:

to run away or stand still.

या तो भाग जाऊं या निस्तभता से खड़ी रहूँ
