When I turned 19, I started my career

کاتێک بووم بە ١٩ ساڵ دەستم کرد بەم کارە

as the first female photojournalist

وەک یەکەم فۆتۆجۆرنالستی ژن

in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

.لە کەرتی غەزە، فەڵەستین

My work as a woman photographer

کارەکەم وەک ژنێکی وێنەگر

was considered a serious insult

وەک مەترسییەک تەماشادەکرا

to local traditions,

،بۆ سەر نەریتە لۆکاڵییەکان

and created a lasting stigma

بوو بە لەکەیەکی بەردەوامیش

for me and my family.

.بە خۆم و خێزانەکەمەوە

The male-dominated field made my presence

پیاوان کە دەستیان گرتبوو لەسەر ئەو بوارەدا

unwelcome by all possible means.

بە هەموو جۆرێک دژم وەستانەوە

They made clear that a woman

بە ئاشکرا دەیانگوت کە

must not do a man's job.

.ژن نابێت کاری پیاو بکات

Photo agencies in Gaza refused to train me

سەنتەرەکانی وێنە ئامادە نەبوون ڕاهێنانم پێبکەن

because of my gender.

.بەهۆی ڕەگەزەکەمەوە

The "No" sign was pretty clear.

.ئاماژەی (نەخێر) زۆر ڕون بوو

Three of my colleagues

سێ لە هاوپیشەکانم

went as far as to drive me to an open air strike area

بردیانم بۆ شوێنی بۆمببارانێک

where the explosion sounds

کە دەنگی تەقینەوە

were the only thing I could hear.

.تەنها شت بوو گوێم لێ بێت

Dust was flying in the air,

،تۆز دەچوو بە ئاسماندا

and the ground was shaking like a swing beneath me.

.زەمین وەک جۆلانێیەک لە ژێرمدا دەلەرییەوە

I only realized we weren't there to document the event

بۆم دەرکەوت ئێمە لەوێ نین تا ڕوداوەکان دۆکیومێنت بکەین

when the three of them got back into the armored Jeep

کاتێک هەرسێکیان بە جێبە سەربازییەکە گەڕانەوە

and drove away, waving and laughing,

،دەستیان بۆ ڕادەوەشاندم و پێدەکەنین

leaving me behind in the open air strike zone.

.لە شوێنی بۆمببارانەکە جێیانهێشتم

For a moment, I felt terrified,

بۆ چەند ساتێک، هەستم بە ترس و

humiliated, and sorry for myself.

شەرمەزاری کرد .بەداخەوە بووم بۆ خۆم

My colleagues' action was not

ئەو کارەی هاوپۆلەکانم

the only death threat I have received,

،یەکەمین ترسان لە مەرگ نەبوو .تا ئەوکات ڕوبەڕوی بوبێتمەوە

but it was the most dangerous one.

.بەڵام مەترسیدارتینیان بوو

The perception of women's life in Gaza

گوێگرتن و تێگەیشتن لە ڕەوشی ژنانی غەزە

is passive.

.بوونی نییە

Until a recent time, a lot of women were not allowed

تا ئێستا چەندین ژن ڕێگەیان لێدەگیرێت

to work or pursue education.

.کاربکەن یاخود بەردەوامبن لە خوێندن

At times of such doubled war including

لە کاتی ئەو دوو جەنگەدا

both social restrictions on women

هەردوو ڕیگریکردن لە ژنان و

and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,

،ناکۆکی نێوان ئیسرائیل و فەڵەستین

women's dark and bright stories were fading away.

چیرۆکە تاریک و درەوشاوەکانی .ژنان، لەناودەچوون

To men, women's stories were seen

پیاوان کارەکانی ژنانیان وەک

as inconsequential.

.شتێکی بێ نرخ دەبینی

I started paying closer attention

زیاتر وردبوومەوە

to women's lives in Gaza.

.لە ژیانی ژنانی غەزە

Because of my gender, I had access

بە هۆی ڕەگەزەکەمەوە، دەمتوانی بچمە

to worlds where my colleagues were forbidden.

.جیهانێکەوە، کە هاوڕیکانم بۆیان نەبوو

Beyond the obvious pain and struggle,

،لە تەنیشت ئازار و جەنگەوە

there was a healthy dose

هیوایەک هەبوو

of laughter and accomplishments.

.بۆ پێکەنین و سەرکەوتن

In front of a police compound in Gaza City

لە شوێنێ کۆبونەوەی پۆلیس لە شاری غەزە

during the first war in Gaza,

،لە ساتە وەختی یەکەمین جەنگدا

an Israeli air raid managed to destroy the compound

هێرشێکی ئاسمانی ئیسرائیلی لە شوێنی کۆبوونەوەکەیدا ئەنجامدرا

and break my nose.

،و لوتم شکا

For a moment, all I saw was white, bright white,

،بۆ چەند چرکەیەک بەرچاوم سپی بوو ،سپییەکی درەوشاوە

like these lights.

.وەک ئەم ڕوناکییانە

I thought to myself I either got blind

دەمگوت ڕەنگە کوێربوبم

or I was in heaven.

.یاخود لە بەهەشتم

By the time I managed to open my eyes,

،ئەو کاتەی توانیم چاوم بکەمەوە

I had documented this moment.

.ئەم دەمەم دۆکیومێنت کرد

Mohammed Khader, a Palestinian worker

محمد خادر، کارکەرێکی فەڵەستینییە

who spent two decades in Israel,

.دوو دەیەی لە ئیسرائیل بەسەر برد

as his retirement plan,

،تا کاتی خانەنشینبوونی

he decided to build a four-floor house,

،بڕیاری دا ماڵێکی چوار نهۆمی دروست بکات

only by the first field operation at his neighborhood,

،سەرەتای کارکردنەکەی لە کۆڵانەکەدا

the house was flattened to the ground.

.خانووەکەی تەختی زەوی کرا

Nothing was left but the pigeons he raised

هیچی بۆنەمایەوە، بێجگە لە کۆترەکانی

and a jacuzzi, a bathtub

لەگەڵ جاکوزی، بانوی حەمامەکەیدا

that he got from Tel Aviv.

.کە لە تەلئەبیبەوە هێنابووی

Mohammed got the bathtub

محمد بانووەکەی هێنایە دەرەوە

on the top of the rubble

لەسەر بینا ڕوخاوەکە داینا و

and started giving his kids

هەموو ئێوارەیەک

an every morning bubble bath.

.بۆ منداڵەکانی پڕ دەکرد لە کەفاو

My work is not meant to hide the scars of war,

،کاری من شاردنەوەی برینەکانی جەنگ نییە

but to show the full frame

بەڵکو پێشاندانی هەموو وێنە

of unseen stories of Gazans.

.نەبینراوەکانی چیرۆکی خەڵکی غەزەیە

As a Palestinian female photographer,

،وەک ژنێکی وێنەگری فەڵەستینی

the journey of struggle, survival and everyday life

گەشتی شەڕ و ڕزگاربوونی ژیانی ڕۆژانە

has inspired me to overcome the community taboo

وایلێکردم کار لەسەر ئەو شتانە بکەم کە لای کۆمەڵگەکەم تابووە و

and see a different side of war and its aftermath.

.دواتریش ڕوویەکی جیاوازی جەنگ ببینم

I became a witness with a choice:

بوون بە گەواهیدەر بە دوو :هەڵبژاردەوە

to run away or stand still.

.هەڵبێم، یاخود بمێنمەوە و بەرەنگاری بکەم
