When you have 21 minutes to speak,

Well, it turns out when brains triple in size,

Well, it turns out the prefrontal cortex does lots of things,

The research that my laboratory has been doing,

Well, it turns out it's precisely the same remarkable machinery that all of us have.

Human beings have something

that we might think of as a "psychological immune system,"

We synthesize happiness, but we think happiness is a thing to be found.

I took a copy of the "New York Times"

and tried to find some instances of people synthesizing happiness.

Here are three guys synthesizing happiness.

" انا الان أفضل صحيا, ماديا، نفسيا،عقليا ..

"I'm better off physically, financially, mentally ..."

وفي كل مجال آخر " ولا املك اي دقيقة قد أندم عليها

"I don't have one minute's regret. It was a glorious experience."

،لقد كانت تجربة خلابة" أؤمن أنني استفدت كثيرا منها"

"I believe it turned out for the best."

من تلك الشخصيات المفعمة بكل هذه السعادة؟

Who are these characters who are so damn happy?

حسناً, أول شخص هو جيم رايت

The first one is Jim Wright.

وقد يكون بعضكم كباراً لدرجة انهم يعلمون من هو, فقد كان احد اعضاء رئيس مجلس النواب

Some of you are old enough to remember:

he was the chairman of the House of Representatives,

and he resigned in disgrace

وقد استقال " بخزي " عندما قام شاب جمهوري يدعى " نيوت جرينش"

when this young Republican named Newt Gingrich found out about

باكتشاف صفقة مشبوهة قام بها سابقاً

a shady book deal that he had done.

He lost everything.

The most powerful Democrat in the country lost everything:

What does he have to say all these years later about it?

He's pretty much covered them there.

Moreese Bickham is somebody you've never heard of.

Moreese Bickham uttered these words upon being released.

He was 78 years old.

He'd spent 37 years in Louisiana State Penitentiary

for a crime he didn't commit.

He was ultimately [released for good behavior halfway through his sentence.]

What did he have to say about his experience?

This guy's not saying, "There were some nice guys. They had a gym."

"Glorious" -- a word we usually reserve for something like a religious experience.

Harry S. Langerman uttered these words.

who was the original drummer for the Beatles,

Because when people synthesize happiness,

as these gentlemen seem to have done,

we all smile at them, but we kind of roll our eyes and say,

"Yeah, right, you never really wanted the job."

"Oh yeah, right -- you really didn't have that much in common with her,

and you figured that out just about the time

as what we might call "natural happiness."

What are these terms?

Natural happiness is what we get when we get what we wanted,

and synthetic happiness is what we make when we don't get what we wanted.

وتلك المولفة هي التي نحصل عليها عندما لا نحصل على ما نريد.

And in our society, we have a strong belief

that synthetic happiness is of an inferior kind.

Why do we have that belief?

Well, it's very simple.

What kind of economic engine would keep churning

if we believed that not getting what we want

could make us just as happy as getting it?

a shopping mall full of Zen monks

I want to suggest to you

that synthetic happiness is every bit as real and enduring

as the kind of happiness you stumble upon

when you get exactly what you were aiming for.

Now, I'm a scientist, so I'm going to do this not with rhetoric,

but by marinating you in a little bit of data.

it's a 50-year-old paradigm called the "free choice paradigm."

It's very simple.

You bring in, say, six objects,

and you ask a subject to rank them from the most to the least liked.

In this case, because this experiment uses them,

these are Monet prints.

Everybody ranks these Monet prints from the one they like the most

Now, what's the right response to that?

Now, here's the experiment we did,

We did this experiment with a group of patients

What do they do?

Well, let's first check and make sure they're really amnesiac.

فعلا فاقدوا الذاكرة . فقد سألناهم

We ask these amnesiac patients to tell us which one they own,

which one they chose last time, which one is theirs.

اي من هذه اخترتم المرة السابقة. اي من هذه خاصتكم ؟

And what we find is, amnesiac patients just guess.

These are normal controls, where if I did this with you,

all of you would know which print you chose.

But if I do this with amnesiac patients, they don't have a clue.

They can't pick their print out of a lineup.

Here's what normal controls do: they synthesize happiness. Right?

This is the change in liking score,

the change from the first time they ranked to the second time they ranked.

Normal controls show -- that was the magic I showed you;

Amnesiacs do exactly the same thing. Think about this result.

These people like better the one they own,

but they don't know they own it.

What these people did when they synthesized happiness

ان ماحدث لهؤلاء عندما ولفوا السعادة

is they really, truly changed

their affective, hedonic, aesthetic reactions to that poster.

ردة فعلهم الجمالية والوجدانية لهذه اللوحة

They're not just saying it because they own it,

وهم لا يقولون ذلك فقط لانهم يملكون هذه اللوحة

because they don't know they own it.

- لانهم لايعلمون انهم يملكونها!

When psychologists show you bars,

وكما عندما يقوم علماء النفس بتحديد معطيات لكم

you know that they are showing you averages of lots of people.

فهي تلك التي يرونكم بها خصائص الناس الاعتيادين - المتوسطين -

And yet, all of us have this psychological immune system,

- و جميعنا نملك نظام المناعة النفسي هذا ..

this capacity to synthesize happiness,

الذي يمكنه ان يولف السعادة -

but some of us do this trick better than others.

ولكن بعضنا يمكنه القيام بهذه الخدعة افضل من غيرهم

And some situations allow anybody to do it more effectively

وبعض المواقف تجعلنا نقوم بذلك افضل

than other situations do.

It turns out that freedom,

the ability to make up your mind and change your mind,

is the friend of natural happiness,

because it allows you to choose among all those delicious futures

and find the one that you would most enjoy.

But freedom to choose,

is the enemy of synthetic happiness,

and I'm going to show you why.

Dilbert already knows, of course.

"Why complain about getting free paper?"

"Look at the quality of the free paper compared to your lousy regular paper!

"Now that you mention it, it does seem a little silkier!"

"What are you doing?"

"I'm helping people accept the things they cannot change." Indeed.

The psychological immune system works best

ان نظام المناعة النفسي يعمل بافضل ما يمكن

when we are totally stuck, when we are trapped.

عندما نكون في وضع مزري او مازق كبير

This is the difference between dating and marriage.

هذا هو الفرق بين المواعدة و الزواج.

You go out on a date with a guy,

اعني انه عندما تكونين في موعد مع شاب

and he picks his nose; you don't go out on another date.

فيقوم باللعب بأنفه فلن تخرجي معه مرة اخرى

بينما ان كنت متزوجة للرجل الذي يلعب بانفه ؟

You're married to a guy and he picks his nose?

He has a heart of gold. Don't touch the fruitcake!

You find a way to be happy with what's happened.

فانت تجد طريقة لكي تصبح سعيدا بما يحدث

Now, what I want to show you

والان ما اريد ان اريكم اياه

is that people don't know this about themselves,

ان الناس لايعلمون هذا عن انفسهم

and not knowing this can work to our supreme disadvantage.

Here's an experiment we did at Harvard.

هذه تجربة قمت بها في هارفرد

We created a black-and-white photography course,

فقد قمنا بعمل كورس تصوير - كورس تصوير بالابيض والاسود -

and we allowed students to come in and learn how to use a darkroom.

وقمنا بالسماح للطلاب بالتسجيل والتعلم عن كيفية استخدام غرف التحميض

So we gave them cameras, they went around campus,

واعطيناهم كميرات تصوير. واخذوا يجولوا في الحرم الجامعي

they took 12 pictures of their favorite professors

وصور كل منهم 12 صورة منها عن دكاترتهم او غرفهم او حتى كلابهم

and their dorm room and their dog,

and all the other things they wanted to have Harvard memories of.

واي شيء يريدون الاحتفاظ به كذكرى في هارفرد

They bring us the camera, we make up a contact sheet,

ثم احضروا لنا الكميرات وقمنا بعمل ورقة استبيان

they figure out which are the two best pictures.

لكي يختارون من تلك الصور افضل صورتين

We now spend six hours teaching them about darkrooms,

وكنا قد قضينا 6 ساعات نعلمهم حول غرف التحميض

and they blow two of them up.

وقد اخرجوا من تلك الصور صورتين

وقد حصل الجميع على صور رائعة مقاس 8×10

They have two gorgeous 8 x 10 glossies

of meaningful things to them, and we say,

لامور تعني لهم الكثير وقلنا لهم

اي من الصورتين يمكنكم ان تتخلوا عنها

"Which one would you like to give up?"

فقالوا " اعلينا ان نتخلى عن احداهما ؟"

"I have to give one up?"

"Yes, we need one as evidence of the class project.

قلنا نعم لانه يتوجب علينا ان نحتفظ باحدى الصور كدليل على خوضكم هذا الكورس

So you have to give me one. You have to make a choice.

لذا يتوجب عليكم اختيار واحدة لكي تتخلوا عنها

You get to keep one, and I get to keep one."

انت ستحتفظ بواحدة وانا ساخذ واحدة

Now, there are two conditions in this experiment.

الان كان هنالك نوعان من هذا الاختبار

In one case, the students are told,

في الحالة الاولى اخبرنا الطلاب " اتعلمون

"But you know, if you want to change your mind,

ان قمتم بتغير رايكم لاحقا فان اللوحة ستكون هنا

I'll always have the other one here,

and in the next four days, before I actually mail it to headquarters" --

لانه لدينا 4 ايام قبل ارسالها الى المركز الرئيسي

yeah, "headquarters" --

ساكون سعيدا --, نعم " المركز الرئيسي"

(Laughter)

ساكون سعيدا بابدالها مع تلك التي تملك في الحقيقة

"I'll be glad to swap it out with you.

In fact, I'll come to your dorm room, just give me an email.

سآتي إلى غرفتك واعطيك إياها

فقط ارسل لي ايميل او اتعلم سوف اتاكد انا منك

Better yet, I'll check with you.

You ever want to change your mind, it's totally returnable."

يمكنك ان تبدل رايك متى تريد انه خيارك

اما القسم الثاني من الطلاب فاخبرناهم العكس تماما

The other half of the students are told exactly the opposite:

اختاروا خياركم ولكن اعلموا انه فورا

"Make your choice, and by the way,

the mail is going out, gosh, in two minutes, to England.

سوف يتم ارسال اللوحة الثانية الى انجلترا

Your picture will be winging its way over the Atlantic.

صورتكم ستحلق فوق الاطلنطي

ولن ترونها لاحقا

You will never see it again."

Half of the students in each of these conditions

الان نصف الطلاب في كلا الحالتين

طلبنا منهم القيام بتوقعات عن مدى

are asked to make predictions

about how much they're going to come to like

امكانية ان يُعجبوا بالصورة التي احتفظوا بها

the picture that they keep

و بتلك التي تركوها خلفهم

and the picture they leave behind.

Other students are just sent back to their little dorm rooms

والنصف الاخر اعيدوا الى غرفهم

and they are measured over the next three to six days

وتم سؤالهم نفس السؤال لاحقا بعد ستة ايام

on their satisfaction with the pictures.

عن مدى اعجابهم ورضاهم عن صورتهم

Look at what we find.

انظروا ماذا وجدنا

First of all, here's what students think is going to happen.

اولا لنرى ماذا يعتقد الطلاب انه سيحدث.

They think they're going to maybe come to like the picture they chose

انهم يعتقدون انه يمكن لاحقا ان يُعجبوا بالصورة التي اختاروا

a little more than the one they left behind.

اكثر من تلك التي قرروا التخلي عنها

But these are not statistically significant differences.

ولكن هذه الاحصائيات لاتوضح اختلافات حقيقية

It's a very small increase, and it doesn't much matter

انه تغير طفيف ولا يمكن الاعتماد عليه

سواء كان الامر في حالة امكانية الاعادة او عدم الامكانية

whether they were in the reversible or irreversible condition.

Wrong-o.

( اخطئتم ) - محاكون مُخطئون. لانه هذا ما حدث فعلاً

Bad simulators.

Because here's what's really happening.

Both right before the swap and five days later,

فكلاهما قبل التبديل او بعد خمسة ايام

people who are stuck with that picture,

فهؤلاء الذين بقيوا مع الصورة بدون خيار بأن

who have no choice,

who can never change their mind,

يغيروا رأيهم لاحقا . أُعجبوا بصورتهم كثيرا

like it a lot.

And people who are deliberating -- "Should I return it?

اما اولئك الذين كانوا يتداولون فكرة - هل اعيدها ؟ ..

Have I gotten the right one?

هل اخترت الصورة الصحيحة ؟ ربما هذه ليست الافضل ؟

Maybe this isn't the good one. Maybe I left the good one?" --

ربما تركت الافضل ؟ - قد قتلوا انفسهم

have killed themselves.

ولم تعجبهم الصورة التي اختاروا وفي الحقيقة

They don't like their picture.

In fact, even after the opportunity to swap has expired,

وبعد ان انتهت المدة المسموحة لتبديل اللوحات

لم يُعجبوا بلوحتهم أيضاً, لماذا ؟

they still don't like their picture.

Why?

لان امكانية تبديلها ليست محفزة

Because the [reversible] condition is not conducive

to the synthesis of happiness.

للسعادة المولفة.

So here's the final piece of this experiment.

وهذه هي المرحلة الاخيرة من التجربة

We bring in a whole new group of naive Harvard students

فقد احضرنا مجموعة جديدة من طلاب هارفرد الجدد

and we say, "You know, we're doing a photography course,

وقلنا " لدينا كورس عن التصوير الضوئي"

and we can do it one of two ways.

يمكننا القيام بالامر بطريقتين

We could do it so that when you take the two pictures,

يمكننا القيام بالامر حيث يمكنكم ان تأخذوا الصورتين

you'd have four days to change your mind,

or we're doing another course where you take the two pictures

and you make up your mind right away and you can never change it.

Which course would you like to be in?" Duh!

دااه! 66 من الطلاب اي الثلثين,

Sixty-six percent of the students, two-thirds,

prefer to be in the course where they have the opportunity to change their mind.

يُفضلون الكورس الذي يمكنهم به تغير رايهم لاحقا

Hello? Sixty-six percent of the students choose to be in the course

هالو ؟ 66 بالمئة من الطلاب اختاروا ان يكونوا في الكورس

in which they will ultimately be deeply dissatisfied with the picture --

الذي سيكونون عدم راضين تماما باختيارهم للصورة

(Laughter)

لانهم لايعلمون اي الحالتين ستقوم السعادة المولفة بعملها

because they do not know the conditions under which synthetic happiness grows.

The Bard said everything best, of course, and he's making my point here

يقول الشاعر " كل شيء رائع " وهو يوضح عن نفس الفكرة التي اقولها هنا

but he's making it hyperbolically:

وقد قال بصورة رمزية

"'Tis nothing good or bad But thinking makes it so."

لا يوجد شيء جيد او سيء انما تفكيرنا هو الذي يجعلها كذلك

It's nice poetry, but that can't exactly be right.

انه شعر جميل, ولكنه لايمكن ان يكون صحيحا تماما

Is there really nothing good or bad?

هل حقا لايوجد شيء جيد و آخر سيء

Is it really the case that gall bladder surgery and a trip to Paris

هل القيام بجراحة للمرارة او الذهاب الى باريس ..

are just the same thing?

هما نفس الشيء ؟ هذا يبدو كاحد اسئلة اختبارات الذكاء

(Laughter)

That seems like a one-question IQ test.

They can't be exactly the same.

لايمكن ان يكون الامرين نفس الشيء.

In more turgid prose, but closer to the truth,

وبصورة جدية اكثر ولكن أقرب الى الحقيقة

was the father of modern capitalism, Adam Smith, and he said this.

قال والد الراسمالية الحديثة ادم سميث

ويستحق هذا الامر التأمل

This is worth contemplating:

"The great source of both the misery and disorders of human life

ان المصدر الاكبر لكل من البؤس او الاضطرابات في حياة الانسان

seems to arise from overrating the difference

يبدو انه يظهر من خلال المبالغة في التفريق

between one permanent situation and another.

بين حالة دائمة واخرى

Some of these situations may, no doubt, deserve to be preferred to others,

صحيح ان بعض الحالات بدون شك يمكن تفضيلها عن اخرى

but none of them can deserve to be pursued

ولكن لا يستحق اي منهما الملاحقة

with that passionate ardor which drives us to violate the rules

بذلك الحماس العاطفي الذي يدفعنا الى اختراق القواعد

either of prudence or of justice,

إما تلك المتعلقة بالحصافة او بالعدالة او لافساد طمأنينة عقولنا في المستقبل

or to corrupt the future tranquility of our minds,

either by shame from the remembrance of our own folly,

or by remorse for the horror of our own injustice."

او عن طريق تأنيب الضمير لظلمنا الذي اقترفانه بحق انفسنا

In other words: yes, some things are better than others.

بمعنى آخر, بعض الامور افضل من غيرها

We should have preferences that lead us into one future over another.

فنحن يجب ان نملك بعض التفضيلات التي تقودنا لمستقبل عوضاً عن آخر

But when those preferences drive us too hard and too fast

ولكن عندما تقودنا هذه التفضيلات بقوة وسرعة

because we have overrated the difference between these futures,

بسبب اننا بالغنا في التفريق بين هذين المستقبلين

we are at risk.

فنحن نغدو بخطر

When our ambition is bounded, it leads us to work joyfully.

لانه عندما يتقيد الطموح فأن هذا سيقودنا للعمل بفرح

When our ambition is unbounded,

عندما يكون الطموح غير مقيد فان هذا سيقودنا للكذب او للغش او للسرقة او لايذاء الاخرين

it leads us to lie, to cheat, to steal, to hurt others,

to sacrifice things of real value.

كما سيدفعنا للتضحية بقيمنا. وعندما تكون مخاوفنا محددة

When our fears are bounded,

we're prudent, we're cautious,

فنحن اكثر حكمة, اكثر حذرا, اكثر ابداعا

we're thoughtful.

When our fears are unbounded and overblown,

وعندما تكون مخاوفنا غير محددة او مبالغ بها

we're reckless, and we're cowardly.

فسنغدو متهورين وسنغدو جبناء

The lesson I want to leave you with, from these data,

ان الدرس الذي اريد ان اترككم معه من هذه النتائج

is that our longings and our worries are both to some degree overblown,

هو ان اهوائنا و همومنا تكون لدرجة ما مبالغ بها على نحو سواء

because we have within us the capacity to manufacture the very commodity

لاننا نملك القدرة على تصنيع تلك المشاعر

we are constantly chasing when we choose experience.

عندما نقوم باختيار ملاحقة احدى التجارب.
