My father was listening to BBC News

on his small, gray radio.

There was a big smile on his face which was unusual then,

ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਦੇਖ ਸਕਦੀ ਸੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਲਿਦ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਸੀ

I didn't know what it meant,

but I could see that my father was very, very happy.

"ਤੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਬਾਕਾਇਦਾ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਏਂ", ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ

"You can go to a real school now," he said.

ਉਹ ਸਵੇਰ ਮੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦੀ

A morning that I will never forget.

"ਬਾਕਾੲਿਦਾ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਕੂਲ"

A real school.

ਦੇਖੋ, ਮੈਂ ਛੇ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਸੀ ਜਦ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਨ ਨੇ ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਉੱਪਰ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕੀਤਾ

ਅਤੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਣਾ ਗ਼ੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ

You see, I was six when the Taliban took over Afghanistan

and made it illegal for girls to go to school.

to be outside alone, to a secret school.

It was the only way we both could be educated.

Each day, we took a different route

so that no one would suspect where we were going.

We would cover our books in grocery bags

so it would seem we were just out shopping.

The school was in a house,

more than 100 of us packed in one small living room.

We all knew we were risking our lives --

the teacher, the students and our parents.

ਕਦੇ ਕਦੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਛੁੱਟੀ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ

ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਹਫਤੇ ਲਈ ਵੀ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ

From time to time, the school would suddenly be canceled

for a week because Taliban were suspicious.

We always wondered what they knew about us.

Do they know where we live?

ਪਰ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਅਸੀਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਸੀ

We were scared,

but still, school was where we wanted to be.

ਮੈਂ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਖੁਸ਼ਕਿਸਮਤ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਐਸਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ

I was very lucky to grow up in a family

where education was prized and daughters were treasured.

My grandfather was an extraordinary man for his time.

A total maverick from a remote province of Afghanistan,

he insisted that his daughter, my mom,

go to school, and for that he was disowned by his father.

But my educated mother became a teacher.

ਦੋ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਰਿਟਾਇਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਪਰ ਸਿਰਫ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ

There she is.

She retired two years ago, only to turn our house

into a school for girls and women in our neighborhood.

ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੱਬਾ - ਇਹ ਰਹੇ

And my father -- that's him --

ਉਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਮਿਲੀ

he was the first ever in his family to receive an education.

There was no question that his children

would receive an education, including his daughters,

ਸਾਰੇ ਜ਼ੋਖਿਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਨੀ ਦਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ

despite the Taliban, despite the risks.

To him, there was greater risk in not educating his children.

During Taliban years, I remember

ਬਹੁਤ ਵਾਰੀ ਮੈਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਲਖੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਤੰਗ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ

there were times I would get so frustrated by our life

ਅਤੇ ਏਨਾ ਡਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਅੱਗੇ ਕੁਛ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿਖਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ

and always being scared and not seeing a future.

ਮੈਂ ਸਭ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ਸੀ

I would want to quit,

ਪਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ

but my father,

ਉਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੇ

ਸੁਣ ਧੀਏ

he would say,

ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਗੁਆ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ

"Listen, my daughter,

you can lose everything you own in your life.

ਤੇਰੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਚੋਰੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਲਾਮ ਵੇਲੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਛੱਡਣਾ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

Your money can be stolen. You can be forced to leave your home during a war.

ਪਰ ਇੱਕ ਚੀਜ ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਰਹੇਗੀ

But the one thing that will always remain with you

ਤੇ ਉਹ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੈ

is what is here,

ਅਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਖੂਨ ਵੇਚ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪੜਾਉਣਾ ਪਿਆ

and if we have to sell our blood to pay your school fees,

ਅਸੀਂ ਪੜਾਵਾਂਗੇ

we will.

ਇਸਲਈ, "ਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੜਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ ?"

So do you still not want to continue?"

Today I am 22.

I was raised in a country that has been destroyed

by decades of war.

Fewer than six percent of women my age have made it beyond high school,

and had my family not been so committed to my education,

I would be one of them.

Instead, I stand here a proud graduate of Middlebury College.

When I returned to Afghanistan, my grandfather,

ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਾਉਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਦਖਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ

the one exiled from his home for daring to educate his daughters,

ਉਸਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਈ ਦਿੱਤੀ।

was among the first to congratulate me.

ਉਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਤਾਰੀਫਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ

He not only brags about my college degree,

ਸਗੋਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਔਰਤ ਹਾਂ

ਮੈਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਔਰਤ ਹਾਂ

but also that I was the first woman,

ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੁਲ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸੈਰ ਕਰਵਾਈ।

and that I am the first woman

to drive him through the streets of Kabul.

My family believes in me.

I dream big, but my family dreams even bigger for me.

ਇਸੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮੈਂ 10X10 ਦੀ ਗਲੋਬਲ ਅਬੈਂਸਡਰ ਹਾਂ

That's why I am a global ambassador for 10x10,

ਜੋ ਔਰਤ-ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਗਲੋਬਲ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਹੈ

a global campaign to educate women.

That's why I cofounded SOLA,

ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਲਈ।

the first and perhaps only boarding school

ਇਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਹਾਲੇ ਵੀ ਜ਼ੋਖਿਮ ਭਰੀ ਹੈ

for girls in Afghanistan,

a country where it's still risky for girls to go to school.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਲੱਗਦੈ ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਕੂ਼ਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ

The exciting thing is that I see students at my school

ਕਾਮਯਾਬੀ ਲਈ ਜ਼ਨੂੰਨ ਭਾਲਦੇ ਹੋਏ

with ambition grabbing at opportunity.

ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਲਦੈਨ ਨੂੰ

And I see their parents and their fathers

who, like my own, advocate for them,

despite and even in the face of daunting opposition.

Like Ahmed. That's not his real name,

ਪਰ ਅਹਿਮਦ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਦਾ ਵਾਲਿਦ ਹੈ।

and I cannot show you his face,

but Ahmed is the father of one of my students.

ਮਹੀਨੇ ਕੁ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਉਹ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਧੀ

Less than a month ago, he and his daughter

SOLA ਤੋਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਵੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ

were on their way from SOLA to their village,

ਉਹ ਕਤਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ-ਹੁੰਦੇ ਬਚੇ

and they literally missed being killed

ਸੜਕ ਉੱਪਰ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਬ-ਹਮਲਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ।

by a roadside bomb by minutes.

ਜਦ ਉਹ ਘਰ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਫੋਨ ਵੱਜਿਆ

As he arrived home, the phone rang,

ਕੋਈ ਚੇਤਾਵਨੀ ਭਰੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲਿਆ

ਕਿ ਜੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਸਕੂਲ ਭੇਜਿਆ

a voice warning him

that if he sent his daughter back to school,

ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਨਗੇ।

"ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੈ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹੁਣੇ ਮਾਰ ਦੇ।

they would try again.

"Kill me now, if you wish," he said,

ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਧੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣ ਦਿਆਂਗਾ

"but I will not ruin my daughter's future

ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਛੜੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ।"

because of your old and backward ideas."

ਮੈਂ ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਬਾਰੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ

What I've come to realize about Afghanistan,

and this is something that is often dismissed in the West,

ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਸਫਲ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੈ

that behind most of us who succeed

is a father who recognizes the value in his daughter

and who sees that her success is his success.

ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਕਿ ਮਾਵਾਂ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਲਈ ਮਦਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ

It's not to say that our mothers aren't key in our success.

ਸਗੋਂ ਉਹ ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਅਾਤੀ ਤੇ ਭਰੋਸੇਮੰਦ ਮਾਰਗਦਰਸ਼ਕ ਹੈ

In fact, they're often the initial and convincing negotiators

ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਲਈ।

of a bright future for their daughters,

ਪਰ ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿਚਲੇ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ

but in the context of a society like in Afghanistan,

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਹੈ।

we must have the support of men.

ਤਾਲਿਬਾਨ ਰਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਦ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ

Under the Taliban, girls who went to school

100 ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ

ਯਾਦ ਰਹੇ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਕਤ ਇਹ ਗ਼ੈਰਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਸੀ।

numbered in the hundreds --

ਪਰ ਅੱਜ, ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੀਹ ਲੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

remember, it was illegal.

But today, more than three million girls are in school in Afghanistan.

ਇੱਥੋਂ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਤੋਂ ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ

Afghanistan looks so different from here in America.

ਮੈਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਮਰੀਕੀ ਬਦਲਾਅ ਨੂੰ ਬੜਾ ਸਹਿਜ/ਸਥਾਈ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ

I find that Americans see the fragility in changes.

ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਡਰ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਬਦਲਾਅ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਾਪਰਨਾ

I fear that these changes will not last

ਅਮਰੀਕੀ ਫੌਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੜ ਪਰਤਣ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਵੀ।

much beyond the U.S. troops' withdrawal.

ਪਰ ਹੁਣ ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਾਪਸ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ

But when I am back in Afghanistan,

ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦੀ ਹਾਂ

when I see the students in my school

ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਾਲਦੈਨ ਜੋ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਲੜਦੇ ਹਨ

and their parents who advocate for them,

ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ ਦਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ

who encourage them, I see a promising future

ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਸਥਾਈ ਬਦਲਾਅ।

ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਅਫ਼ਗ਼ਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਇੱਕ ਉਮੀਦ ਤੇ ਸੰਭਾਵਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ

and lasting change.

To me, Afghanistan is a country of hope and boundless possibilities,

ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ

and every single day

SOLA ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

the girls of SOLA remind me of that.

ਮੇਰੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਵੱਡੇ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਲੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

Like me, they are dreaming big.
