When I was 11,

I remember waking up one morning to the sound of joy in my house.

আমার মনে আছে এক দিন সকালে জেগে উঠে দেখি বাসাতে আনন্দের আবহ বইছে

My father was listening to BBC News

আমার বাবা বিবিসি'র খবর শুনছিলেন

on his small, gray radio.

তার ছোট ধুসর রঙের রেডিও'তে

There was a big smile on his face which was unusual then,

because the news mostly depressed him.

"The Taliban are gone!" my father shouted.

I didn't know what it meant,

but I could see that my father was very, very happy.

"You can go to a real school now," he said.

A morning that I will never forget.

A real school.

You see, I was six when the Taliban took over Afghanistan

তোমাদের বলি, আমার বয়স যখন ছয় তখন তালিবানরা আফগানিস্তান দখল করে নেয়

and made it illegal for girls to go to school.

এবং মেয়েদের বিদ্যালয়ে পড়তে যাওয়া নিষিদ্ধ ঘোষণা করে।

So for the next five years, I dressed as a boy

তাই, পরবর্তী ৫ বছর আমি ছেলেদের বেশ ধরে

to escort my older sister, who was no longer allowed

আমার বড় বোনকে পাহারা দিয়ে গোপনে বিদ্যালয়ে নিয়ে যেতাম

to be outside alone, to a secret school.

কারণ তখন মেয়ে একা বের হওয়া নিষেধ ছিল।

It was the only way we both could be educated.

আমাদের শিক্ষিত হবার জন্য এটাই ছিলো একমাত্র উপায়।

Each day, we took a different route

প্রতিদিন আমরা ভিন্ন পথে রওনা হতাম

so that no one would suspect where we were going.

যেন কেউ আমাদের সন্দেহ না করে যে আমরা কোথায় যাচ্ছি।

We would cover our books in grocery bags

বাজারের থলেতে আমাদের বইগুলো লুকিয়ে রাখতাম

so it would seem we were just out shopping.

যেন বাইরে থেকে মনে হয় আমরা শুধু বাজার করার জন্য বের হয়েছি।

The school was in a house,

বিদ্যালয়টি একটি বাসার মধ্যে ছিল,

more than 100 of us packed in one small living room.

যেখানে আমরা ১০০ জন একটি ছোট কক্ষে গাদাগাদি করে থাকতাম।

It was cozy in winter but extremely hot in summer.

শীতকালে ভালই লাগত কিন্ত গ্রীষ্মে ভীষণ কষ্ট হত।

We all knew we were risking our lives --

আমরা সবাই -শিক্ষক, ছাত্রী এবং অভিভাবগবৃন্দ এটা বুঝতে পারতাম

the teacher, the students and our parents.

আমরা আমাদের জীবনের ঝুকি নিচ্ছি।

From time to time, the school would suddenly be canceled

তালেবানদের সন্দেহের কারণে প্রায়ই

for a week because Taliban were suspicious.

বিদ্যালয়টি এক সপ্তাহের জন্য বন্ধ হয়ে যেত।

We always wondered what they knew about us.

আমরা শংকায় থাকতাম যে তালেবানরা আমাদের সম্পর্কে জেনে গেছে।

Were we being followed?

তারা কি আমাদের অনুসরণ করছে?

Do they know where we live?

তারা কি আমাদের অবস্থান সম্পর্কে জানে?

We were scared,

আমরা শঙ্কিত ছিলাম,

but still, school was where we wanted to be.

কিন্তু তারপরও আমরা চাইতাম বিদ্যালয়টি থাকুক।

I was very lucky to grow up in a family

আমার ভাগ্য ভালো যে এমন একটি পরিবারে বেড়ে উঠেছি

where education was prized and daughters were treasured.

যেখানে শিক্ষা ছিল আশির্বাদ আর মেয়েরা ছিল ঐশ্বর্য ।

My grandfather was an extraordinary man for his time.

আমার নানা তার সময়ের একজন অসামান্য মানুষ ছিলেন।

A total maverick from a remote province of Afghanistan,

আফগানিস্তানের প্রত্যন্ত গ্রামের একজন একরোখা মানুষ,

he insisted that his daughter, my mom,

যিনি তার মেয়ে, আমার মাকে,

go to school, and for that he was disowned by his father.

তার বাবার নিষেধ অমান্য করে জোর করে বিদ্যালয়ে পাঠিয়েছিলেন।

But my educated mother became a teacher.

কিন্তু আমার শিক্ষিত মা একজন শিক্ষিকা হয়েছিলেন।

There she is.

এই যে তিনি এখানে ।

She retired two years ago, only to turn our house

প্রতিবেশী মেয়েরা যেন পড়তে পারে

into a school for girls and women in our neighborhood.

তিনি ২ বছর আগে অবসর নিয়েছেন আমাদের বাসাতে বিদ্যালয় বানাতে।

And my father -- that's him --

এবং আমার বাবা - এই যে তিনি-

he was the first ever in his family to receive an education.

তিনি তার পরিবারের প্রথম যিনি শিক্ষিত হয়েছিলেন।

There was no question that his children

তাদের সন্তানেরা এমনকি মেয়েরা

would receive an education, including his daughters,

নানা বাধা আর তালিবান হুমকির সত্তেও বিদ্যা অর্জন করবে,

despite the Taliban, despite the risks.

এ নিয়ে তাদের কোনো দ্বিধা ছিল না।

To him, there was greater risk in not educating his children.

তিনি অশিক্ষাকে সন্তানদের জন্য বিপদের কারণ মনে করতেন।

During Taliban years, I remember

আমার মনে আছে, তালিবান আমলে এমন একটা সময় ছিল

there were times I would get so frustrated by our life

আমি আমদের জীবন নিয়ে হতাশ হয়ে যেতাম

and always being scared and not seeing a future.

আর সর্বদা অন্ধকার ভবিষৎ নিয়ে শংকিত থাকতাম।

I would want to quit,

আমি হাল ছেড়ে দিতে চাইতাম,

but my father,

কিন্তু আমার বাবা,

he would say,

আমায় বলতেন,

"Listen, my daughter,

শোনো মেয়ে,

you can lose everything you own in your life.

তোমার জীবনে যা তোমার, তার সবকিছু তুমি হারিয়ে ফেলতে পারো।

Your money can be stolen. You can be forced to leave your home during a war.

তোমার সম্পদ চুরি হয়ে যেতে পারে। যুদ্ধের কারণে বাড়ি ছেড়ে চলে যেতে হতে পারে।

But the one thing that will always remain with you

কিন্তু তোমার শিক্ষার মত একটি সম্পদ

is what is here,

চিরদিন তোমার কাছে রয়ে যাবে,

and if we have to sell our blood to pay your school fees,

আর তাই তোমার বিদ্যালয়ের বেতনের জন্য যদি আমাদের রক্ত বিক্রি করতে হয়,

we will.

তবে আমরা তাই করব।

So do you still not want to continue?"

তাই তুমি কি চাও না লেখাপড়া চালিয়ে যেতে?

Today I am 22.

এখন আমার বয়স ২২ বছর।

I was raised in a country that has been destroyed

এমন এক দেশে বেড়ে উঠেছি যা আজ ধংশপ্রাপ্ত

by decades of war.

যুগের পর যুগ যুদ্ধের ফলে।

Fewer than six percent of women my age have made it beyond high school,

আমার মত ছয় শতাংশের কম নারী উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের গন্ডি পার হতে পেরেছে,

and had my family not been so committed to my education,

আর আমার পরিবার যদি আমার শিক্ষার ব্যাপারে দায়িত্বশীল না হত,

I would be one of them.

আমিও আজ তাদের মত হতাম।

Instead, I stand here a proud graduate of Middlebury College.

তাই আজ আমি মিডলবারি কলেজের একজন গর্বিত স্নাতক।

When I returned to Afghanistan, my grandfather,

আমি যখন আফগানিস্তানে ফিরে আসি,

the one exiled from his home for daring to educate his daughters,

was among the first to congratulate me.

He not only brags about my college degree,

শুধু আমার ডিগ্রী অর্জনের জন্য তিনি যে গর্বিত ছিলেন তাই নয়,

but also that I was the first woman,

বরং আমি ছিলাম প্রথম ডিগ্রী অর্জনকারী নারী,

and that I am the first woman

to drive him through the streets of Kabul.

My family believes in me.

I dream big, but my family dreams even bigger for me.

That's why I am a global ambassador for 10x10,

আর সে কারণেই আমি ১০x ১০ এর দুত হতে পেরেছি,

a global campaign to educate women.

যা নারী শিক্ষা নিয়ে বিশ্ব ব্যপী কর্মকান্ড পরিচালনা করে।

That's why I cofounded SOLA,

সে কারণে আমি sola তে সম্পৃক্ত হয়েছি,

the first and perhaps only boarding school

যা আফগানিস্তানে মেয়েদের জন্য

for girls in Afghanistan,

প্রথম এবং সম্ভবত একমাত্র বোর্ডিং স্কুল

a country where it's still risky for girls to go to school.

যেখানে মেয়েদের বিদ্যালয়ে যাওয়া এখনো ঝুকিপূর্ণ।

The exciting thing is that I see students at my school

আনন্দের বিষয় হলো আমি আমার স্কুলের

with ambition grabbing at opportunity.

ছাত্রীদের মাঝে সম্ভাবনাকে কাজে লাগানোর ইচ্ছা দেখতে পাই।

And I see their parents and their fathers

আর তাদের অভিভাবক ও বাবারা ঠিক সেই ভাবে

who, like my own, advocate for them,

প্রেরণা দেন, যেমনটা আমি পেয়েছি,

despite and even in the face of daunting opposition.

সে হোক না যত বড় বাধা আর বিরোধিতার শংকা।

Like Ahmed. That's not his real name,

আহমেদ সে রকম একজন বাবা।

and I cannot show you his face,

এটা তার আসল নাম নয়,

but Ahmed is the father of one of my students.

কিন্তু সে আমার এক ছাত্রীর বাবা

Less than a month ago, he and his daughter

প্রায় এক মাস আগে আহমেদ ও তার মেয়ে যখন

were on their way from SOLA to their village,

sola থেকে তাদের গ্রামে ফিরছিল,

and they literally missed being killed

মাত্র কয়েক মিনিট এর জন্য

by a roadside bomb by minutes.

রাস্তায় পুতে রাখা বোমার আক্রমন থেকে প্রাণে বেঁচে যায়।

As he arrived home, the phone rang,

বাড়িতে ফিরে আসার সাথে সাথে তার বাড়ির ফোন বেজে উঠলো,

a voice warning him

অপরিচিত কন্ঠ তাকে হুমকি দিয়ে বলল

that if he sent his daughter back to school,

আহমেদ যদি তার মেয়েকে আবার বিদ্যালয়ে পাঠায়,

they would try again.

তারা আবার এমন আক্রমনের শিকার হবে।

"Kill me now, if you wish," he said,

আহমেদ জবাব দিল, "যদি পারো, আমাকে এখনি মারো।"

"but I will not ruin my daughter's future

কিন্তু তোমাদের ভ্রান্ত বিশ্বাসের কারণে

because of your old and backward ideas."

আমার মেয়ে ভবিষত আমি নষ্ট হতে দিব না

What I've come to realize about Afghanistan,

আফগানিস্তান নেয়ে আমার উপলব্ধি এই যে

and this is something that is often dismissed in the West,

এখানের কিছু ধারণা পশ্চিমা চিন্তার সম্পূর্ণ বিপরীত,

that behind most of us who succeed

যেমন আমার মত প্রতেকের সাফল্যের পিছনে

is a father who recognizes the value in his daughter

বাবার ভূমিকা রয়েছে যিনি তার মেয়ের মর্যাদা সম্পর্কে সচেতন ছিলেন

and who sees that her success is his success.

আর মেয়ের সাফল্যের মাঝে নিজের সাফল্যে দেখতে পেয়েছিলেন।

It's not to say that our mothers aren't key in our success.

আমাদের সাফল্যের পিছনে মায়েদের কোনো ভূমিকা নেই ইটা বলা ভুল।

In fact, they're often the initial and convincing negotiators

বরং তারা তাদের মেয়েদের

of a bright future for their daughters,

উজ্জল ভবিষৎ এর প্রথম উদোক্তা ,

but in the context of a society like in Afghanistan,

কিন্তু আফগানিস্তানের মত সমাজের প্রেক্ষিতে

we must have the support of men.

পুরুষদের সাহায্য আমাদের একান্ত প্রয়োজন

Under the Taliban, girls who went to school

আমার মনে আছে,তালিবান আমলে

numbered in the hundreds --

নিষেধাজ্ঞা থাকা সত্তেও, শত শত মেয়ে

remember, it was illegal.

বিদ্যালয়ে পড়তে যেত.

But today, more than three million girls are in school in Afghanistan.

কিন্তু আজ আফগানিস্তানে ত্রিশ লক্ষের অধিক মেয়ে বিদ্যালয়ে পড়তে যাচ্ছে।

Afghanistan looks so different from here in America.

আমেরিকায় থেকে আফগানিস্তাকে সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন ভাবে দেখায়।

I find that Americans see the fragility in changes.

আমি দেখেছি আমেরিকানরা এই পরিবর্তনকে প্রচলিত ধারণা থেকে বেরিয়ে আসার লক্ষণ মনে করে।

I fear that these changes will not last

আমার ভয় হয় এই পরিবর্তন বেশিদিন টিকবে না

much beyond the U.S. troops' withdrawal.

মার্কিন যৌথ বাহিনী চলে যাওয়ার পর।

But when I am back in Afghanistan,

কিন্তু আফগানিস্তানে ফিরে আসার পর যখন দেখি,

when I see the students in my school

আমার বিদ্যালয়ে ছাত্রীরা আসছে

and their parents who advocate for them,

এবং তাদের অভিভাবকবৃন্দ এখানে আসার প্রেরণা দিচ্ছে,

who encourage them, I see a promising future

আমি তখন প্রতিশ্রুতিময় ভবিষ্যৎ আর

and lasting change.

আমূল পরিবর্তনের আভাস পাই।

To me, Afghanistan is a country of hope and boundless possibilities,

আমার কাছে আফগানিস্তান একটি অসীম সম্ভাবনা ও প্রতিশ্রুতি'র দেশ

and every single day

এবং প্রতিটা দিন

the girls of SOLA remind me of that.

SOLA 'র মেয়েরা আমাকে তা স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয়।

Like me, they are dreaming big.

আমার মত তারাও এখন বড় স্বপ্ন দেখছে।
