When I was 11,

کە تەمەنم ١١ ساڵان بوو،

I remember waking up one morning to the sound of joy in my house.

بیرمە لە خەو هەستام بە دەنگی پێکەنینێک کە ماڵەکەی پڕکرد بوو.

My father was listening to BBC News

باوکم بوو کە گوێی لە هەواڵەکانی BBC گرت بوو

on his small, gray radio.

لە رادیۆ رەساسیە بچوکەکەی.

There was a big smile on his face which was unusual then,

زەردەخەنەیەکی گەورە لەسەر دەموچاوی بوو کە ئەو کات نائاسایی بوو،

because the news mostly depressed him.

"The Taliban are gone!" my father shouted.

I didn't know what it meant,

but I could see that my father was very, very happy.

بەڵام لەوە تێگەشتم کە باوکم بەراستی دڵخۆش بوو.

"You can go to a real school now," he said.

پێی وتم: ئێستا دەتوانیت بچیتە قوتابخانەیەکی راستەقینەوە.

A morning that I will never forget.

ئەو رۆژەم هەرگیز لە یاد ناچێت.

A real school.

قوتابخانەیەکی راستەقینە.

You see, I was six when the Taliban took over Afghanistan

تەمەنم شەش ساڵان بوو کە تاڵیبان ئەفغانستانی داگیر کرد

and made it illegal for girls to go to school.

و قوتابخانەی لە کچان قەدەغە کرد.

So for the next five years, I dressed as a boy

بۆیە لە ماوەی پێنج ساڵی دواتردا، وەکو کوڕێک جلوبەرگم دەپۆشی

to escort my older sister, who was no longer allowed

تاوەکو پاسەوانی خوشکە گەورەکەم بم لە کاتی چوونی بۆ قوتابخانەیەکی نهێنی

to be outside alone, to a secret school.

چونکە چیتر بۆی نەبوو بەتەنها بچێتە دەرەوە

It was the only way we both could be educated.

ئەوە تاکە رێگە بوو تاوەکو هەردووکمان بخوێنین.

Each day, we took a different route

هەموو رۆژێک، رێگەیەکی جیاوازمان دەگرتە بەر

so that no one would suspect where we were going.

تاوەکو کەس گومان نەکات کە ئێمە بۆ کوێ دەچین.

We would cover our books in grocery bags

کتێبەکانمان لە عەلاگەی سەوزەدا هەڵدەگرت

so it would seem we were just out shopping.

تاوەکو وەها دەربکەوێت کە تەنها بۆ بازاڕی هاتووینەتە دەر.

The school was in a house,

قوتابخانەکە لە ماڵێکدا بوو،

more than 100 of us packed in one small living room.

زیاتر لە ١٠٠ خوێندکار پێکەوە لە یەک ژووری بچووکدا بووین.

It was cozy in winter but extremely hot in summer.

لە زستاندا خۆش بوو، بەڵآم لە هاویندا زۆر گەرم بوو.

We all knew we were risking our lives --

دەمانزانی بەم کارە ژیانمان دەخەینە مەترسییەوە

the teacher, the students and our parents.

مامۆستاکە، خوێندکارەکان، و دایک و باوکمان.

From time to time, the school would suddenly be canceled

هەندێ جار، لە پڕ قوتابخانەکەمان دادەخرا

for a week because Taliban were suspicious.

بۆ ماوەی هەفتەیەک چونکە تاڵیبان گومانیان هەبوو.

We always wondered what they knew about us.

هەمیشە لە خۆمان دەپرسی ئایا ئەوان دەربارەی ئێمە چی دەزانن.

Were we being followed?

ئایا ئێمە چاودێری دەکرێین؟

Do they know where we live?

ئایا دەزانن لە کوێ دەژین؟

We were scared,

ئێمە ترسا بووین.

but still, school was where we wanted to be.

بەڵام لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا هەر دەمانویست بچینەوە قوتابخانە.

I was very lucky to grow up in a family

من بەبەخت بووم کە لە خێزانێکدا گەورە بووم

where education was prized and daughters were treasured.

کە خوێندن بەهادار بوو، و کچانیش رێزلێگیراو بوون.

My grandfather was an extraordinary man for his time.

باپیرم پیاوێکی ناوازە بوو لە سەردەمی خۆیدا.

A total maverick from a remote province of Afghanistan,

پیاوێکی سەربەخۆی ملکەچنەکەری ناوچەیەکی دوورەدەستی ئەفغانستان.

he insisted that his daughter, my mom,

سوور بوو لەوەی کچەکەی، کە دایکی منە، بچێتە قوتابخانە

go to school, and for that he was disowned by his father.

هەر لەبەر ئەوەش باوکی پەیوەندییەکانی لەگەڵی پچڕاند.

But my educated mother became a teacher.

و دایکە خوێندەوارەکەم بوو بە مامۆستا.

There she is.

ئەوە خۆیەتی.

She retired two years ago, only to turn our house

دوو ساڵ پێش ئێستا خانەنشین بوو، تەنها بۆ ئەوەی

into a school for girls and women in our neighborhood.

ماڵەکەمان بکات بە قوتابخانە بۆ کچان و ئافرەتانی گەڕەکەکەمان.

And my father -- that's him --

و باوکیشم... ئەوە خۆیەتی...

he was the first ever in his family to receive an education.

یەکەمین کەسی خێزانەکەی بوو کە بخرێتە بەر خوێندن.

There was no question that his children

هیچ گومان لەوەدا نەبوو کە منداڵەکانی

would receive an education, including his daughters,

بچنە بەر خوێندن، بە کچەکانیشییەوە،

despite the Taliban, despite the risks.

سەرەڕای هەبوونی تاڵیبان، سەرەڕای هەموو مەترسییەکان.

To him, there was greater risk in not educating his children.

لای ئەو نەچوونی منداڵەکانی بۆ قوتابخانە مەترسیدارتر بوو.

During Taliban years, I remember

لە ماوی دەسەڵاتی تاڵیباندا، لە بیرمە

there were times I would get so frustrated by our life

هەندێ کات هەبوو کە زۆر بێزار دەبووم لەو ژیانەی تێیدا بووین

and always being scared and not seeing a future.

کە هەمیشە ترسا بووین و داهاتوویەکی روونمان نەدەبینی.

I would want to quit,

هەندێ جار دەمویست کۆڵ بدەم،

but my father,

بەڵام باوکم،

he would say,

پێی دەگووتم،

"Listen, my daughter,

گوێ بگرە کچەکەم،

you can lose everything you own in your life.

دەکرێت هەموو شتێکت لە دەست بدەیت لە ژیاندا.

Your money can be stolen. You can be forced to leave your home during a war.

دەکرێت پارەت لێ بدزرێت، یاخود ناچار بکرێیت ماڵەکەت بەجێ بهێڵیت لە کاتی جەنگدا.

But the one thing that will always remain with you

بەڵام تاکە شت کە بۆ هەمیشە لەگەڵت دەمێنێتەوە

is what is here,

ئەوەیە کە لێرەدایە.

and if we have to sell our blood to pay your school fees,

و ئەگەر پێویست بکات کە خوێنمان بفڕۆشین بۆ پێدانی تێچووی قوتابخانەکەت،

we will.

ئەوا دەیکەین.

So do you still not want to continue?"

کەوایە ئێستاش هەر ناتەوێت بەردەوام بیت؟

Today I am 22.

ئەمڕۆ من تەمەنم ٢٢ ساڵە.

I was raised in a country that has been destroyed

لە وڵاتێک گەورە بوومە کە دەیان ساڵی جەنگ

by decades of war.

بوونەتە هۆی رووخاندنی.

Fewer than six percent of women my age have made it beyond high school,

کەمتر لە %٦ی ئافرەتانی هاوتەمەنم توانیویانە دوای خوێندنی ئامادەیی بەردەوام بن،

and had my family not been so committed to my education,

و ئەگەر خیزانەکەم زۆر پابەند نەبوونایە بە خوێندنەکەمەوە،

I would be one of them.

منیش یەکێک دەبووم لەوان.

Instead, I stand here a proud graduate of Middlebury College.

لە جێی ئەوە، ئێستا بە شانازییەوە وەکو دەرچوویەکی کۆلێژی میدڵبێریم راوەستاوم.

When I returned to Afghanistan, my grandfather,

کە گەڕامەوە ئەفغانستان، باپیرم،

the one exiled from his home for daring to educate his daughters,

ئەو کورەی لە ماڵی باوکی دەرکرا بەهۆی ئەوەی کچەکانی خستەبەر خوێندن،

was among the first to congratulate me.

یەکێک بوو لەوانەی پێش هەموو کەس پیرۆزبایی لێ کردم.

He not only brags about my college degree,

ئەو تەنها بە بڕوانامەی کۆلێژەکەمەوە خۆی هەڵناکێشێت،

but also that I was the first woman,

بەڵکو ئەوەش کە یەکەم ئافرەت بوومە،

and that I am the first woman

و یەکەم ئافرەتیشم،

to drive him through the streets of Kabul.

کە بە ئۆتۆمبێل بیگەڕێنم بەناو شەقامەکانی کابوڵدا.

My family believes in me.

خێزانەکەم بڕوایان پێمە.

I dream big, but my family dreams even bigger for me.

خەونی گەورە دەبینم، بەڵام خێزانەکەم لە خۆم زیاتر خەونی گەورەتریان هەیە بۆم.

That's why I am a global ambassador for 10x10,

هەر بۆیە باڵوێزی جیهانی 10x10م.

a global campaign to educate women.

کە کەمپینێکی جیهانییە بۆ پەروەردەکردنی ئافرەتان.

That's why I cofounded SOLA,

هەر بۆیە بە هاوبەشی خاوەندارێتی SOLAم کرد.

the first and perhaps only boarding school

یەکەم و رەنگە تاکە قوتابخانەی نیشتەجێبوون بێت

for girls in Afghanistan,

تایبەت بە کچان لە ئەفغانستان.

a country where it's still risky for girls to go to school.

وڵاتێک کە تا ئێستاش مەترسیدارە بۆ کچان کە بچنە قوتابخانە.

The exciting thing is that I see students at my school

ئەوەی سەرسامکەرە ئەوەیە کە لە قوتابخانەکەمدا خوێندکاری وەها دەبینم

with ambition grabbing at opportunity.

کە ئامانجی بەرزیان هەیە و بە دوای هەلدا دەگەڕێن.

And I see their parents and their fathers

و بەخێوکەرەکانیان و باوکیان دەبینم

who, like my own, advocate for them,

کە هەر وەکو باوکی من داکۆکیان لێ دەکەن،

despite and even in the face of daunting opposition.

ئەمەش سەرەڕای هەبوونی دژایەتییە ورە روخێنەرەکان.

Like Ahmed. That's not his real name,

هەر وەکو ئەحمەد، ئەمە ناوێکی خوازراوە،

and I cannot show you his face,

و ناشتوانم روخساری پیشانتان بدەم،

but Ahmed is the father of one of my students.

بەڵام ئەحمەد باوکی یەکێک لە خوێندکارەکانمە.

Less than a month ago, he and his daughter

کەمتر لە مانگێک بەر لە ئێستا، خۆی و کچەکەی

were on their way from SOLA to their village,

لە رێگە بوون لە قوتابخانەکەوە بەرەو لادێکەی خۆیان،

and they literally missed being killed

لە هەوڵیکی کوشتن رزگاریان بوو

by a roadside bomb by minutes.

بە بۆمبی لاڕێگە بە چەند خولەکێک.

As he arrived home, the phone rang,

هەر کە گەشتە ماڵەوە، زەنگێکی موبایلی پێگەیشت

a voice warning him

دەنگێک هەڕەشەی لێ کرد

that if he sent his daughter back to school,

کە ئەگەر کچەکەی بنێرێتەوە قوتابخانە،

they would try again.

ئەوا دووبارە هەوڵی کوشتنی دەدەنەوە.

"Kill me now, if you wish," he said,

ئەویش پێی گووتن: ئەگەر دەتانەوێت ئێستا بمکوژن،

"but I will not ruin my daughter's future

بەڵام من داهاتووی کچەکەم ناشێوێنم

because of your old and backward ideas."

بەهۆی بیروبۆچونە کۆن و دواکەوتووەکانتانەوە.

What I've come to realize about Afghanistan,

ئەو دەرەنجامەی پێی گەشتووم لەسەر ئەفغانستان،

and this is something that is often dismissed in the West,

ئەمەش شتێکە زۆرجار لە رۆژئاوادا پشتگوێ خراوە،

that behind most of us who succeed

کە لە پشتی هەریەک لە ئێمەوە کە سەرکەوتوو دەبین

is a father who recognizes the value in his daughter

باوکێک هەیە کە بەهای کچەکەی دەزانێت

and who sees that her success is his success.

و سەرکەوتنی کچەکەی بە سەرکەوتنی خۆی دەزانێت.

It's not to say that our mothers aren't key in our success.

ئەمە مانای ئەوە نییە کە دایکەکانمان کلیلی سەرکەوتنی ئێمە نین.

In fact, they're often the initial and convincing negotiators

لە راستیدا، زۆرجار ئەوان گفتوگۆکەر و قایلپێکەری سەرەکین

of a bright future for their daughters,

بۆ دابینکردنی داهاتوویەکی پرشنگ بۆ کچەکانیان،

but in the context of a society like in Afghanistan,

بەڵام لە تێگەشتنی کۆمەڵگەیەکی وەکو ئەفغانستان،

we must have the support of men.

دەبێت پاڵپشتی پیاوانمان بەدەست خستبێت.

Under the Taliban, girls who went to school

لەژێر دەسەڵاتی تاڵیباندا، رێژەی ئەو کچانەی دەچوونە قوتابخانە

numbered in the hundreds --

یەک دانە بوو لە سەدان کچ...

remember, it was illegal.

لە بیرتان بێت، نایاسایی بوو.

But today, more than three million girls are in school in Afghanistan.

بەڵام ئەمڕۆ، زیاتر لە ٣ میلیۆن کچ لە قوتابخانە دەخوێنن لە ئەفغانستان.

Afghanistan looks so different from here in America.

ئەفغانستان زۆر جیاوازە لە ئەمریکا.

I find that Americans see the fragility in changes.

ئەمریکییەکان گوڕانکارییەکان بێبەها دەبینن.

I fear that these changes will not last

دەترسم کە ئەم گۆڕانکارییانە نەمێننەوە

much beyond the U.S. troops' withdrawal.

لە دوای رۆشتنی هێزە چەکدارەکانی ئەمریکا.

But when I am back in Afghanistan,

بەڵام کە دەگەڕێمەوە ئەفغانستان،

when I see the students in my school

کاتێک خوێندکارەکانی نێو قوتابخانەکەم دەبینم

and their parents who advocate for them,

و دایک و باوکیان کە داکۆکیان لێ دەکەن،

who encourage them, I see a promising future

کە هانیان دەدەن، داهاتوویەکی گەش دەبینم

and lasting change.

و گۆڕانکارییەکی هەمیشەیی.

To me, Afghanistan is a country of hope and boundless possibilities,

بۆ من، ئەفغانستان وڵاتی هیوا و ئەگەری بێسنوورە.

and every single day

و هەموو رۆژێک

the girls of SOLA remind me of that.

کچەکانی SOLA ئەوەم بیر دەخەنەوە.

Like me, they are dreaming big.

هەر وەکو من، ئەوانیش خەونی گەورە دەبینن.
