There is no reason to learn how to show you're paying attention

Learn to have a conversation

We've all had really great conversations.

There is no reason

So I have 10 basic rules. I'm going to walk you through all of them,

but honestly, if you just choose one of them and master it,

Number two: Don't pontificate.

If you want to state your opinion

Now, there's a really good reason why I don't allow pundits on my show:

Because they're really boring.

The famed therapist M. Scott Peck said

Number three: Use open-ended questions.

In this case, take a cue from journalists.

Start your questions with who, what, when, where, why or how.

If you put in a complicated question, you're going to get a simple answer out.

If I ask you, "Were you terrified?"

you're going to respond to the most powerful word in that sentence,

which is "terrified," and the answer is "Yes, I was" or "No, I wasn't."

သူ့တို့ဟာ အသံသွင်းတော့မှာကို အရမ်း ပိုဂရုထားမိတော့

and so they're more careful about what they claim to be an expert in

သူတို့ဟာ ဆရာတစ်ဆူဆိုတာနဲ့ သူတို့ အသေအချာ သိတာကို

and what they claim to know for sure.

အခိုင်အမာဆိုဖို့ ပိုပြီး သတိထားကြတယ်။

Do that. Err on the side of caution.

လုပ်တော့လုပ်ပါ၊ သတိတော့ထားပေါ့။

Talk should not be cheap.

ပြောဆိုတာ အပေါစား မဖြစ်သင့်ဘူးလေ။

Number six: Don't equate your experience with theirs.

နံပါတ် ခြောက်။ ကိုယ့်အတွေ့အကြုံကို သူတို့ဟာနဲ့ မနှိုင်းယှဉ်ပါနဲ့။

If they're talking about having lost a family member,

သူတို့ရဲ့ မိသားစုဝင်တစ်ဦး ဆုံးရှုံးတဲ့အကြောင်း ပြောနေရင်

don't start talking about the time you lost a family member.

ကိုယ့်မိသားစုဝင်တစ်ဦး ဆုံးရှုံးတဲ့ အကြောင်း စမပြောမိစေနဲ့။

If they're talking about the trouble they're having at work,

သူတို့အလုပ်က ဒုက္ခတွေအကြောင်း ပြောနေရင်

don't tell them about how much you hate your job.

ကိုယ့်အလုပ်ကို ဘယ်လောက် မုန်းတာကို မပြောနဲ့။

It's not the same. It is never the same.

မတူဘူး။ ဘယ်တော့မှ မတူဘူးလေ။

All experiences are individual.

အတွေ့အကြုံအားလုံးဟာ သီခြားစီပါ။

And, more importantly, it is not about you.

ပိုပြီး အရေးကြီးတာက ဒါက ကိုယ့်ကိစ္စမဟုတ်ဘူးလေ။

You don't need to take that moment to prove how amazing you are

ကိုယ်ဘယ်လောက် အံ့ဩစရာကောင်းတာ (သို့) ဘယ်လောက် ခံစားရတာ

or how much you've suffered.

ပြဖို့ ဒီကာလကို မသုံးသင့်ဘူး

Somebody asked Stephen Hawking once what his IQ was, and he said,

တစ်ခါက လူတစ်ဦးက Stephen Hawking ကို သူ့ IQ ဘယ်လောက်လဲ မေးတော့

"I have no idea. People who brag about their IQs are losers."

သူက "မသိဘူး၊ IQ အကြောင်း ကြွားသူတွေဟာ အရှုံးသမားတွေ"တဲ့။

Conversations are not a promotional opportunity.

စကားပြောဆိုခြင်းတွေဟာ ကြော်ငြာခွင့်တစ်ရပ် မဟုတ်ဘူး။

Number seven:

နံပါတ် ခုနှစ်။

Try not to repeat yourself.

ကိုယ်က ထပ်ထပ်မပြောမိစေနဲ့

It's condescending, and it's really boring,

ဒါဟာ တင်စီးတာ၊ တကယ် ပျင်းစရာကြီးဖြစ်ပြီး

and we tend to do it a lot.

ကျွန်မတို့ တော်တော် လုပ်တတ်ကြတယ်။

Especially in work conversations or in conversations with our kids,

အထူးသဖြင့် အလုပ် စကားဝိုင်းမှာ (သို့) ကလေးတွေနဲ့ စကားပြောတာမှာ

we have a point to make,

မှတ်သားမိစေဖို့ပါ၊

so we just keep rephrasing it over and over.

ဒါနဲ့ ဒါကို တစ်နည်းနည်းနဲ့ အထပ်ထပ် ဆက်ပြောတယ်။

Don't do that.

ဒါ မလုပ်ပါနဲ့။

Number eight: Stay out of the weeds.

နံပါတ် ရှစ်။ မှော်ပင်တွေကနေ ရှောင်ပါ။

Frankly, people don't care

ရှင်းရှင်းပြောရရင်၊ လူတွေဟာ နှစ်တွေ၊

about the years, the names,

အမည်တွေ၊ ရက်စွဲတွေ၊

the dates, all those details

စိတ်ထဲမှာ ပေါ်လာဖို့ ကိုယ်အပြင်းအထန်

that you're struggling to come up with in your mind.

လုပ်နေတဲ့ အသေးစိတ်အားလုံးကို ဂရုမစိုက်ဘူး။

They don't care. What they care about is you.

ဂရုမစိုက်ကြဘူး။ သူတို့ ဂရုစိုက်တာက ရှင့်ကိုပါ။

They care about what you're like,

ဂရုစိုက်တာက ရှင်က ဘယ်လိုမျိုးလဲ၊

what you have in common.

ဘာတွေမှာ တူလဲဆိုတာပါ။

So forget the details. Leave them out.

ဒီတော့ အသေးစိတ်တွေ မေ့လိုက်၊ ဒါတွေကို ချန်ထားလိုက်ပါ။

Number nine:

နံပါတ် ကိုး။

This is not the last one, but it is the most important one.

ဒါက နောက်ဆုံး တစ်ခု မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ ဒါပေမဲ့ အရေးကြီးဆုံး တစ်ခုပါ။

Listen.

နားထောင်ပါ။

I cannot tell you how many really important people have said

နားထောင်တာဟာ ကိုယ်ဖွံ့ဖြိုးအောင် လုပ်နိုင်တဲ့ နံပါတ်တစ် အရေးကြီးဆုံး

that listening is perhaps the most, the number one most important skill

အတတ်ပညာ ဖြစ်လောက်တာ တကယ့် အရေးပါတဲ့ လူဘယ်နှစ်ဦးက ပြောခဲ့တာ

that you could develop.

ကျွန်မ မပြောနိုင်ဘူး။

Buddha said, and I'm paraphrasing,

ဗုဒ္ဓပြောခဲ့တာ တနည်း ပြန်ပြောရရင်

"If your mouth is open, you're not learning."

"သင်ဟာ ပါးစပ်ဟနေရင် သင်ယူနေတာမဟုတ်ဘူး"တဲ့။

And Calvin Coolidge said, "No man ever listened his way out of a job."

Calvin Coolidge ပြောတာက "ဘယ်သူ မှ အလုပ်ပျက်ခံပြီး နားမထောင်ဘူး" တဲ့။

Why do we not listen to each other?

ဘာလို့ အချင်းချင်း နားမထောင်ကြတာလဲ။

Number one, we'd rather talk.

နံပါတ်တစ် ပြောရတာကို ပိုကြိုက်ကြတယ်။

When I'm talking, I'm in control.

ကိုယ်ပြောနေရင်၊ ကိုယ်လက်ထဲမှာ ရှိတယ်။

I don't have to hear anything I'm not interested in.

ကိုယ်စိတ်မဝင်စားတာ ဘာကိုမှ ကြားစရာမလိုဘူး။

I'm the center of attention.

ကိုယ်က အများ အာရုံစိုက်ရာ။

I can bolster my own identity.

ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် မြှင့်တင်နိုင်တယ်။

But there's another reason:

ဒါပေမဲ့ နောက်တစ်ကြောင်းက

We get distracted.

ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ အာရုံထွေပြားတာပါ။

The average person talks at about 225 word per minute,

သာမန်လူတစ်ယောက်ဟာ တစ်မိနစ် ၂၂၅ ခွန်းလောက်ပြောတယ်။

but we can listen at up to 500 words per minute.

ဒါပေမဲ့ တစ်မိနစ်ကို အလုံး ၅၀၀ လောက်ထိ ကျွန်မတို့ ကြားနိုင်တယ်

So our minds are filling in those other 275 words.

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မတို့ စိတ်တွေက အခြား ၂ရ၅ လုံး ဖြည့်နေရတာပေါ့။

And look, I know, it takes effort and energy

ကြည့်ပါ၊ ကျွန်မသိတာက တကယ်က တစ်ဦးဦးကို အာရုံစိုက်ဖို့

to actually pay attention to someone,

အားထုတ်မှုနဲ့ စွမ်းအင်လိုတာပါ။

but if you can't do that, you're not in a conversation.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါမလုပ်နိုင်ရင်တော့ ရှင်ဟာ စကားဝိုင်းထဲမှာ မဟုတ်ဘူး၊

You're just two people shouting out barely related sentences

ရှင်တို့ဟာ တစ်နေရာတည်းမှာ ဆက်စပ်ရုံသာရှိတဲ့ ဝါကျတွေကို

in the same place.

အော်နေတဲ့ လူနှစ်ဦးပါ။

You have to listen to one another.

အခြားသူကို နားထောင်ဖို့ လိုတယ်။

Stephen Covey said it very beautifully.

Stephen Covey က ဒါကို အရမ်း လှပစွာ

He said, "Most of us don't listen with the intent to understand.

ပြောထားတာက "အများစုဟာ နားလည်ဖို့ ရည်ရွယ်ပြီး နားထောင်တာမဟုတ်ဘူး၊

We listen with the intent to reply."

တုံ့ပြန်ဖို့ ရည်ရွယ်ပြီး နာဒထောင်တာ"တဲ့။

One more rule, number 10, and it's this one: Be brief.

နောက် စည်းမျဉ်း နံပါတ် ၁၀ က ဒါပါ။ အတိုချုပ်က

[A good conversation is like a miniskirt; short enough to retain interest,

(ကောင်းတဲ့ပြောဆိုမှုဟာ miniskirt လိုစိတ်ဝင်စားမှုထိန်းဖို့ အနေတော်တို

but long enough to cover the subject. -- My Sister]

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကိစ္စကိုဖုံးဖို့ အတန်သင့် ရှည်ရမယ်၊ အစ်မရေ)

All of this boils down to the same basic concept, and it is this one:

ဒါအားလုံးကို တူညီတဲ့ အခြေခံ သဘောထား အဖြစ်အကျဉ်းချုံးလိုက်တာက ဒါပါပဲ။

Be interested in other people.

အခြားလူတွေကို စိတ်ဝင်စားပါ။

You know, I grew up with a very famous grandfather,

ကျွန်မဟာ အရမ်း ထင်ရှားတဲ့ အဖိုးနဲ့ ကြီးပြင်းခဲ့ကာ

and there was kind of a ritual in my home.

အိမ်မှာ ဓလေ့လိုမျိုးရှိခဲ့တယ်။

People would come over to talk to my grandparents,

လူတွေ အဖိုးဆီလာလည်ပြီး စကားပြောကြတယ်။

and after they would leave, my mother would come over to us,

သူတို့ပြန်သွားတော့ အမေက ကျွန်မတို့ဆီလာပြီး

and she'd say, "Do you know who that was?

ပြောတာက "အဲဒါဘယ်သူလဲ သိလား။

She was the runner-up to Miss America.

သူမက Miss America ဒုတိယဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

He was the mayor of Sacramento.

သူက Sacramento ရဲ့ မြိုတော်ဝန်လေ။

She won a Pulitzer Prize. He's a Russian ballet dancer."

သူမက Pulitzer ဆုရခဲ့တာ။ သူက ရုရှား ဘဲလေး အကသမား။"တဲ့

And I kind of grew up assuming

ကျွန်မဟာ လူတိုင်းမှာ ပုန်းကွယ်နေတဲ့ သူတို့အကြောင်း အံ့ဩစရာ တစ်ခုခု

everyone has some hidden, amazing thing about them.

ရှိတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ ထင်မြင်ချက်နဲ့ ကြီးပြင်းလာခဲ့တာမျိုးပါ။

And honestly, I think it's what makes me a better host.

တကယ်တော့ ဒါက ကျွန်မကို ပိုတော်တဲ့ အစီစဉ်မှူးဖြစ်စေခဲ့ပါ။

I keep my mouth shut as often as I possibly can,

တတ်နိုင်သလောက် ကိုယ့်ပါးစပ်ကို ပိတ်ထားပြီး

I keep my mind open,

စိတ်ကို ဖွင့်ထားတာပါ။

and I'm always prepared to be amazed,

အံ့ဩဖို့ အမြဲ ပြင်ဆင်ထားပြီး

and I'm never disappointed.

ဘယ်တော့မှ စိတ်မပျက်ခဲ့ပါဘူး။

You do the same thing.

အလားတူ ရှင်တို့လည်း လုပ်ကြပါ။

Go out, talk to people,

အပြင်ကိုထွက်လိုက်ပါ၊ လူတွေကို ပြောဆိုပါ၊

listen to people,

လူတွေပြောတာ နားထောင်ပါ။

and, most importantly, be prepared to be amazed.

ပြီးတော့ ပိုအရေးကြီးတာက အံ့အားသင့်ဖို့ ပြင်ဆင်ထားပါ။
