The language I'm speaking right now

ئەو زمانەی کە ئێستا قسەی پێ دەکەم

is on its way to becoming the world's universal language,

بە خێرایی دەبێتە زمانێکی جیهانی،

for better or for worse.

Let's face it,

با ڕاستی بڵێین،

it's the language of the internet,

it's the language of finance,

it's the language of air traffic control,

of popular music,

English is everywhere.

Now, Mandarin Chinese is spoken by more people,

but more Chinese people are learning English

than English speakers are learning Chinese.

Last I heard,

there are two dozen universities in China right now

teaching all in English.

English is taking over.

And in addition to that,

it's been predicted that at the end of the century

almost all of the languages that exist now --

there are about 6,000 --

There will only be some hundreds left.

And on top of that,

it's at the point where instant translation of live speech

is not only possible, but it gets better every year.

The reason I'm reciting those things to you

هۆکاری گێڕانەوەی ئەم شتانە بۆ ئێوە

is because I can tell that we're getting to the point

ئەوەیە کە ئەتوانم بڵێم دەگەینە خاڵێک

where a question is going to start being asked,

کە پرسیار بکەین،

which is: Why should we learn foreign languages --

ئایا بۆچی دەبێت فێری زمانی بیانی ببین،

other than if English happens to be foreign to one?

ئەگەر ئینگلیزی بۆ خۆی زمانێکی بیانی بێت؟

Why bother to learn another one when it's getting to the point

بۆچی زەحمەت بکێشین بۆ فێربوونی زمانێکی تر

where almost everybody in the world will be able to communicate in one?

ئەگەر دنیا وای لێبێت کە هەموو کەسێک بتوانێت بە یەک زمان قسە بکات؟

I think there are a lot of reasons,

پێم وایە هۆکاری زۆر هەیە بۆ ئەمە،

but I first want to address

بەڵام ئەمەوێت یەکەم شت ئاماژە بەم

the one that you're probably most likely to have heard of,

بەوەی کە ڕەنگە زۆربەتان بیستبێتتان،

because actually it's more dangerous than you might think.

چونکە لە ڕاستیدا زۆر مەترسیدارترە لەوەی بیری لێ ئەکەنەوە.

And that is the idea

ئەوەش بیرۆکەکەیە

that a language channels your thoughts,

that the vocabulary and the grammar of different languages

gives everybody a different kind of acid trip,

That is a marvelously enticing idea,

but it's kind of fraught.

So it's not that it's untrue completely.

So for example, in French and Spanish

بۆ نمونە، لە فەڕەنسی و ئیسپانیدا

the word for table is, for some reason, marked as feminine.

وشەی مێز، بۆ مێینە بەکارهاتوە لەبەر هەندێک هۆکار.

So, "la table," "la mesa," you just have to deal with it.

کەواتە، مێز، "" لا مێسا،" پێویستە خۆتی بۆ بگونجێنیت.

It has been shown

وا پێشاندراوە

that if you are a speaker of one of those languages

کەوا ئەگەر تۆ بە یەکێک لەو زمانانە قسە بکەیت و

and you happen to be asked

پرسیارت لێبکرێت

how you would imagine a table talking,

چۆن خەیاڵی ئەوە دەکەیت مێز قسە بکات،

then much more often than could possibly be an accident,

لەوانەیە زیاتر رووداوێک بێت،

a French or a Spanish speaker

قسەکەری فەرەنسی یان ئیسپانی

says that the table would talk with a high and feminine voice.

کەوا مێزەکە ئەیەوێت بە دەنگێکی بڵند و مێینە قسە بکات.

So if you're French or Spanish, to you, a table is kind of a girl,

کەواتە ئەگەر تۆ فەرەنسیبیت یان ئیسپانی، مێز جۆرێکە لە کچ بۆ تۆ.

as opposed to if you are an English speaker.

بەپێچەوانەوە ئەگەر قسەکەرێکی ئینگلیزیبیت.

It's hard not to love data like that,

ئەوا قورسە زانیارییەکی ئاوات حەزلێنەبێت و

and many people will tell you that that means

زۆر کەس پێت ئەڵێن ئەوە واتای ئەوەیە کە

that there's a worldview that you have if you speak one of those languages.

بۆچوونێکی جیهانیانەت هەیە ئەگەر بە یەکێک لەو زمانانە قسە بکەیت.

But you have to watch out,

بەڵام پێویستە وریابیت،

because imagine if somebody put us under the microscope,

چونکە بیهێنە پێش چاوت ئەگەر کەسێک بمان خاتە ژێر مایکرۆسکۆپێکەوە،

the us being those of us who speak English natively.

What is the worldview from English?

بیروبۆچوونەکانی ئینگلیزی چییە؟

So for example, let's take an English speaker.

بۆ نموونە، با قسەکەرێکی زمانی ئینگلیزی بێنین.

Up on the screen, that is Bono.

ئەوەی سەر سکرینەکە، بۆنۆیە.

He speaks English.

ئەو بە ئینگلیزی قسەدەکات.

I presume he has a worldview.

وای دادەنێم تێڕوانینی بۆ جیهان هەبێت.

Now, that is Donald Trump.

ئێستا، ئەوەش دۆناڵد ترەمپە.

In his way,

بە ڕێگای خۆی،

he speaks English as well.

ئەویش هەر بە ئینگلیزی قسە ئەکات.

And here is Ms. Kardashian,

and she is an English speaker, too.

So here are three speakers of the English language.

What worldview do those three people have in common?

بیروبۆجوونەکان چین ئەو سێ کەسە هەیانە بەشێوەیەکی گشتی؟

What worldview is shaped through the English language that unites them?

شێوەی بیروبۆجونەکان چین کە لەڕێگایەوە زمانی ئینگلیزی ئەوان یەک دەگرن؟

It's a highly fraught concept.

ئەوە چەمکێکی بەرزی ترسناکە. و

And so gradual consensus is becoming that language can shape thought,

هێواش هێواش گۆدەنگی ئەخاتە سەر ئەوەی کە دەکرێت زمان وێنەی بیرکردنەوە بکێشێت،

but it tends to be in rather darling, obscure psychological flutters.

بەڵام پێدەچێت بیرۆکەکان بن کە دەبنە تێکچوونی دەروونی نامۆ.

It's not a matter of giving you a different pair of glasses on the world.

مەسەلەی ئەوە نییە دوو چاویلکەی جیاوازت باتێ بۆ بینینی جیهان.

Now, if that's the case,

ئێستا، ئەگەر ئەوە گرفتەکە بێت.

then why learn languages?

کەواتە بۆچی فێری زمان ببیت؟

If it isn't going to change the way you think,

ئەگەر شێوازی بیرکردنەوەت نەگۆڕێت،

what would the other reasons be?

هۆکارەکانی دیکەی چی بێت؟

There are some.

چەند هۆکارێک هەن.

One of them is that if you want to imbibe a culture,

یەک لەوان ئەگەر بتەوێت کلتورەکەت جێگیر بکەیت،

if you want to drink it in, if you want to become part of it,

ئەگەر بەردەوام بیت لەخواردنەوە، ئەگەر دەتەوێت ببیت بەبەشیک لە ئەو،

then whether or not the language channels the culture --

پاشان ئەگەر زمان کلتور ئاڕاستە بکات یان نا --و

and that seems doubtful --

ئەوەش جێگەی گومانە --

if you want to imbibe the culture,

پێویستە لە کلتور تێبگەیت،

you have to control to some degree

پێویستە هەتا ڕادەیەک کۆنترۆڵت هەبێت

the language that the culture happens to be conducted in.

بەسەر زمانەکەی کلتورەکەی پێ نیشان ئەدرێت.

There's no other way.

هیچ ڕێگایەکی دیکە نییە.

There's an interesting illustration of this.

نیشاندانێکی سەرنجڕاکێش هەیە بۆ ئەمە.

I have to go slightly obscure, but really you should seek it out.

پێویستە کەمێک نادیاربم، بەڵام بەدڵنییاوە پێویستە بگەڕێت بەدوایدا،

There's a movie by the Canadian film director Denys Arcand --

فیلمێک هەیە لەلایەن دەرهێنەری کەنەدی دێنیس ئارکاند --

read out in English on the page, "Dennis Ar-cand,"

بە ئینگلیزی سەر پەڕەکە بخوێنەرەوە، "دێنیس ئار - کاند،"

if you want to look him up.

ئەگەر دەتانەوێت بەدوایدا بگەڕێن.

He did a film called "Jesus of Montreal."

فیلمێکی دەرکرد بەناوی "جیسەس مۆنتریاڵ."

And many of the characters

زۆر بەی ئەکتەرەکان

are vibrant, funny, passionate, interesting French-Canadian,

کەنەدی فەڕەنسی کراوە، قسە خۆش بە جۆش و سەرنجڕاکێشن،

French-speaking women.

ژنانی قسەکەر بە فەڕەنسی.

There's one scene closest to the end,

دیمەنێک هەیە لە نزیک کۆتاییەکەوە،

where they have to take a friend to an Anglophone hospital.

پیویستە هاوڕێکەیان ببەن بۆ نەخۆشخانەیەکی ئینگلیزی.

In the hospital, they have to speak English.

لە نەخۆشخانەکەدا پێویستە بە ئینگلیزی قسە بکەن.

Now, they speak English but it's not their native language,

ئێستا، بە ئینگلیزی قسە دەکەن بەڵام زمانی ڕەسەنیان نییە،

they'd rather not speak English.

حەز ناکەن بەکاریبێنن.

And they speak it more slowly,

هێواش قسە ئەکەن،

they have accents, they're not idiomatic.

شێوازی قسەکردنی خۆیان هەیە، ئینگلیزی ڕەسەن نییە.

Suddenly these characters that you've fallen in love with

کتوپڕ ئەو ئەکتەرانە کەوا بەدرێژایی فیلمەکە خۆشتویستوون

become husks of themselves, they're shadows of themselves.

دەبن بە قاوغەکەی خۆیان، دەبن بە سێبەری خۆیان.

To go into a culture

بۆ چوونە ناو کلتور و

and to only ever process people through that kind of skrim curtain

بۆ ئەوەی خەڵک بەناو ئەو پەردە تەنکەدا بەریت

is to never truly get the culture.

ئەوەیە هەرگیز بەڕاستی لە کلتورەکە تێنەگەیت. و

And so to the extent that hundreds of languages will be left,

بۆیە هەتا ئەو ڕادەیەی چەند سەد زمانێک ئەمێنێتەوە،

one reason to learn them

یەک هۆکار بۆ ئەوەی فێریان بیت

is because they are tickets to being able to participate

لەبەر ئەوەیە کە بلیتن بۆ ئەوەی بتوانیت بەشداری بکەیت

in the culture of the people who speak them,

لە کلتوری خەڵکەکەیا کە قسە ئەکەن پێی،

just by virtue of the fact that it is their code.

تەنیا بەهۆی ئەو ڕاستییەوە کە ئەوە یاساکانی ئەوانە.

So that's one reason.

کەواتە ئەوە یەک هۆکار.

Second reason:

دووەم هۆکار:

it's been shown

نیشان دراوە

that if you speak two languages, dementia is less likely to set in,

کە ئەگەر بە دوو زمان قسە بکەیت، ئەگەری کەمترە تووشی مێشک پووکانەوەبیت، و

and that you are probably a better multitasker.

لەوانەیە کەسێکی باشتر بیت لە فرەکارکردندا.

And these are factors that set in early,

ئەمانەش ئەو هۆکارانەن کە زوو یەنە کایەوە، و

and so that ought to give you some sense

ئەوەش هەتا ڕادەیەک تێگەشتنێکت ئەیاتێ

of when to give junior or juniorette lessons in another language.

کە کەی وانەی دەستپێکردن دانێیت لە زمانێکی تردا.

Bilingualism is healthy.

دوو زمان زانی شتێکی تەندروستە. و

And then, third --

سێیەم هۆکاریش --

languages are just an awful lot of fun.

فێربوونی زمان شتێکی زۆر خۆشە.

Much more fun than we're often told.

زۆر خۆشتر لەوەی زۆرجار پێمان ئەوترێت.

So for example, Arabic: "kataba," he wrote,

بۆ نموونە، عەرەبی: "کەتەبە" ئەو نوسی،

"yaktubu," he writes, she writes.

"یەکتوبو"، ئەینوسێت.

"Uktub," write, in the imperative.

"ئوکتوب" بینوسە، دواخوازییە.

What do those things have in common?

ئەو شتانە لە چیدا هاوبەشن؟

All those things have in common

هەموو ئەوانە لەوەدا هاوبەشن

the consonants sitting in the middle like pillars.

کە پیتە نەبزوێنەکان وەک پایە لە ناوەڕاستی وشەکەدایە.

They stay still,

لە جێگەی خۆیان دەمێننەوە، و

and the vowels dance around the consonants.

بزوێنەکانیش بەچواردەوری نەبزوێنەکاندا سەما ئەکەن.

Who wouldn't want to roll that around in their mouths?

کێ هەیە نەیەوێت ئەوە لە دەمیا بێنێت و ببات؟

You can get that from Hebrew,

ئەوەت لە زمانی عیبرییەوە دەست ئەکەوێت،

you can get that from Ethiopia's main language, Amharic.

ئەوەت لە زمانی سەرەکی ئەسیوبیا، ئەمهاریکەوە دەستئەکەوێت.

That's fun.

ئەوەش خۆشە.

Or languages have different word orders.

یان زمانەکان ڕیزبەندی ووشەی جیا جیایان هەیە.

Learning how to speak with different word order

فێربوونی ئەوەی کە چۆن بە ڕیزبەندی جیاوازی وشەکان قسە بکەیت

is like driving on the different side of a street if you go to certain country,

وەک ئەوە وایە لەسەر سایدێکی جیاوازی شەقام لێخوڕیت لە وڵاتێکی دیاریکراو،

or the feeling that you get when you put Witch Hazel around your eyes

یان هەستەکەی پێت ئەگات کاتێک گیراوەی هەیزڵ ئەیەیت لە چاوەکانت و

and you feel the tingle.

هەست بە خورووەکەی ئەکەیت.

A language can do that to you.

زمانیش ئەتوانێت ئەوەت بۆ بکات.

So for example,

بۆ نموونە،

"The Cat in the Hat Comes Back,"

"پشیلە کڵاوبەسەرەکە گەڕایەوە،"

a book that I'm sure we all often return to,

کتێبێک کە دڵنیام زۆربەمان زۆر کات ئەگەڕێینەوە سەری،

like "Moby Dick."

وەک "مۆبی دیک."

One phrase in it is, "Do you know where I found him?

یەکێک لە دەستەواژەکانی تیایەتی، "ئەزانیت لە کوێ دۆزیمەوە؟

Do you know where he was? He was eating cake in the tub,

ئەزانیت لەکوێ بوو؟ لەناو گەرماوەکەدا کێکی ئەخوارد،

Yes he was!"

بەڵێ وای ئەکرد!"

Fine. Now, if you learn that in Mandarin Chinese,

باشە. ئێستا، ئەگەر ئەوە بە چینی ماندارینی فێربیت،

then you have to master,

ئەوا پێویستە بڵێیت،

"You can know, I did where him find?

"ئەتوانی بزانیت، ئەوەم کرد لەکوێ دۆزیمەوە ئەو؟

He was tub inside gorging cake,

گەرماوبوو لە ناوەوە کێکی ئەخواردن،

No mistake gorging chewing!"

هیچ هەڵەی تیا نییە، ئەیخوارد ئەیجوو.

That just feels good.

ئەوە لە خۆش ئەچێت.

Imagine being able to do that for years and years at a time.

بیهێنەرە بەرچاوت بتوانیت بۆ چەندین ساڵی لەدوای یەک ئەوە بکەیت.

Or, have you ever learned any Cambodian?

یان، هەرگیز هیچ فێری کەمبۆدی بوون؟

Me either, but if I did,

منیش فێرنەبووم، بەڵام ئەگەر فێری بوومایە،

I would get to roll around in my mouth not some baker's dozen of vowels

ئەبوو لەناو دەمما بتوانم نەک چەند پیتێکی بزوێنی دیاریکراو بەکاربێنم

like English has,

وەک ئینگلیزی،

but a good 30 different vowels

بەڵکو سی پیتی بزوێنی جیا جیا

scooching and oozing around in the Cambodian mouth

لەناو دەمی کەمبۆدییەکا گیزە ئەکەن و یەن و ئەچن

like bees in a hive.

وەک شانەی هەنگێک.

That is what a language can get you.

زمان ئەکرێت ئەوەت بۆ بەدەست بێنێت. و

And more to the point,

زیاتر بچینە سەر تەوەرەکە،

we live in an era when it's never been easier to teach yourself another language.

لە سەردەمێکدا ئەژین کە هەرگیز ئاسانتر نەبووە زمانێکی تر فێری خۆت بکەیت.

It used to be that you had to go to a classroom,

پێشتر بەشێوەیەک بوو کە ئەبوو بچیتە ناو پۆلێەکەوە، و

and there would be some diligent teacher --

مامۆستایەکی باشی لێئەبوو لەوێ --

some genius teacher in there --

مامۆستایەکی بلیمەت --

but that person was only in there at certain times

بەڵام ئەو کەسە تەنیا لە هەندێک کاتی دیاریکراودا لەوێ بوو و

and you had to go then,

ئەبوو لەو کاتانەیا بچیت، و

and then was not most times.

زۆربەی کات لەوێ نەبوو.

You had to go to class.

ئەبوو بچیتە پۆلەکەوە.

If you didn't have that, you had something called a record.

ئەگەر ئەوەت نەبووبێت، شتێکت هەبووە پێی وتراوە تۆمار.

I cut my teeth on those.

دەمێکە لەمەدا شارەزاییم پەیداکردووە.

There was only so much data on a record,

هێندە زانیاری هەبووە لەسەر تۆمارێک،

or a cassette,

یان لەسەر کاسێتێک،

or even that antique object known as a CD.

یان ئەو شتە کۆنەی ناسرابوو بە سی دی.

Other than that you had books that didn't work,

جگە لەوە کتێبت هەبووە کە سوودیان نەبووە،

that's just the way it was.

هەر بەو شێوەیە بووە.

Today you can lay down --

ئەمڕۆ ئەتوانی پاڵکەویت --

lie on your living room floor,

لەسەر زەوی ژووری دانیشتنەکەت پاڵکەویت،

sipping bourbon,

بۆربۆن بخۆیتەوە، و

and teach yourself any language that you want to

کام زمانەت حەزلێبێت خۆت فێرکەیت

with wonderful sets such as Rosetta Stone.

بەم سێتە باشانەی ناسراوە بە بەردی رۆزێتا.

I highly recommend the lesser known Glossika as well.

هەروەها پێشنیاری گلۆسیکاش ئەکەم کە کەمتر ناسراوە.

You can do it any time,

هەرکاتێک بتەوێ ئەتوانی بیکەیت،

therefore you can do it more and better.

بۆیە ئەتوانی زیاتر و باشتر بیکەیت.

You can give yourself your morning pleasures in various languages.

ئەتوانیت بەیانیانی خۆت بە چەندین زمانی هەمەجۆرەوە خەریک بکەیت.

I take some "Dilbert" in various languages every single morning;

هەر بەیانییەک لە چەندین زمانی هەمەجۆردا کەمێک ئەزمون وەر ئەگرم؛

it can increase your skills.

دەکرێت شارەزاییت زیاد بکات.

Couldn't have done it 20 years ago

بیست ساڵ لەمەوبەر نەمئەتوانی بیکەم

when the idea of having any language you wanted

ئەوکاتەی بیرۆکەی فێربوونی هەر زمانێکی بتەوێت

in your pocket,

لە گیرفانتا بێت و

coming from your phone,

لە مۆبایلەکەتەوە بێت،

would have sounded like science fiction to very sophisticated people.

لە خەیاڵی زانستی ئەچوو بۆ زۆر کەسی ئاڵۆز.

So I highly recommend

بۆیە پێشنیاری ئەوە ئەکەم

that you teach yourself languages other than the one that I'm speaking,

خۆت فێری زمانی تر بکەیت جگە لەوەی کە من قسەی پێئەکەم،

because there's never been a better time to do it.

چونکە هەرگیز کاتێکی لە ئێستا باشترت دەست ناکەوێت.

It's an awful lot of fun.

شتێکی زۆر خۆش ئەبێت.

It won't change your mind,

بیرکردنەوەت ناگۆڕێت،

but it will most certainly blow your mind.

بەڵام بەدڵنیاییەوە سەرسام ئەبیت پێی.
