The education system in India

I said, "No, I want to actually start a college

So the elders gave me some very sound and profound advice.

So we built the first Barefoot College

They go back and solar-electrify their own village.

This woman went back

and solar-electrified the first village,

set up a workshop --

the first village ever to be solar-electrified in Afghanistan

[was] by the three women.

This woman

is an extraordinary grandmother.

היא סבתא יוצאת מן הכלל.

55 years old, and she's solar-electrified 200 houses for me in Afghanistan.

היא בת 55, והיא דאגה לאספקת חשמל ל-200 בתים באפגניסטן.

And they haven't collapsed.

She actually went and spoke to an engineering department in Afghanistan

We went to Africa,

and we did the same thing.

All these women sitting at one table from eight, nine countries,

all chatting to each other, not understanding a word,

because they're all speaking a different language.

and actually becoming solar engineers.

I went to Sierra Leone,

and there was this minister driving down in the dead of night --

comes across this village.

Comes back, goes into the village, says, "Well what's the story?"

הוא נכנס לכפר ושאל " מה הסיפור פה?"

They said, "These two grandmothers ... "

והם אמרו "יש לנו שתי סבתות..."

"Grandmothers?" The minister couldn't believe what was happening.

"סבתות?" השר לא האמין למשמע אוזניו.

"Where did they go?" "Went to India and back."

,איפה הן היו?" "הן הלכו להודו וחזרו."

Went straight to the president.

הו הלך ישירות לנשיא.

He said, "Do you know there's a solar-electrified village in Sierra Leone?"

ואמר לו "אתה יודע שיש כפר עם חשמל סולארי בסיירה לאון?"

He said, "No." Half the cabinet went to see the grandmothers the next day.

הוא ענה "לא." למחרת חצי מהקבינט נסעו לראות את הסבתות.

"What's the story."

"מה העניין."

So he summoned me and said, "Can you train me 150 grandmothers?"

אז הוא זימן אותי אליו ושאל "אתה יכול להכשיר בשבילי 150 סבתות?"

I said, "I can't, Mr. President.

עניתי "אני לא יכול, אדוני הנשיא.

But they will. The grandmothers will."

So he built me the first Barefoot training center in Sierra Leone.

And 150 grandmothers have been trained in Sierra Leone.

we went to select a grandmother in Gambia.

I knew which woman I would like to take.

The community got together and said, "Take these two women."

I said, "No, I want to take this woman."

עניתי להם "לא, אני רוצה את האישה ההיא."

They said, "Why? She doesn't know the language. You don't know her."

הם אמרו "למה? היא לא דוברת את השפה. אתה לא מכיר אותה."

I said, "I like the body language. I like the way she speaks."

עניתי להם "אני אוהב את שפת הגוף שלה. אני אוהב את האופן שהיא מדברת."

"Difficult husband; not possible."

"יש לה בעל קשה, לא אפשרי."

Called the husband, the husband came,

קראנו לבעל והוא בא,

swaggering, politician, mobile in his hand. "Not possible."

מהדס, פוליטיקאי עם טלפון סלולארי ביד. "לא אפשרי."

"Why not?" "The woman, look how beautiful she is."

"למה לא?" "האשה, תראה כמה שהיא יפה."

I said, "Yeah, she is very beautiful."

אמרתי לו "כן, היא מאוד יפה."

"What happens if she runs off with an Indian man?"

"ומה יקרה אם היא תברח עם גבר הודי?"

That was his biggest fear.

זה היה הפחד הכי גדול שלו.

I said, "She'll be happy. She'll ring you up on the mobile."

אמרתי לו "היא תהיה מאושרת. היא תתקשר לטלפון הנייד שלך."

She went like a grandmother

היא הלכה בתור סבתא

and came back like a tiger.

וחזרה כנמרה.

She walked out of the plane

היא ירדה מהמטוס

and spoke to the whole press as if she was a veteran.

ודיברה עם הכתבים כאילו היא עשתה זאת כל חייה.

She handled the national press,

היא התמודדה עם התקשורת הלאומית,

and she was a star.

והיא הפכה לכוכבת.

And when I went back six months later, I said, "Where's your husband?"

כשחזרתי לשם שישה חודשים מאוחר יותר, שאלתי אותה "איפה בעלך?"

"Oh, somewhere. It doesn't matter."
