with the poor,

गरीब लोगों से प्रेम की कथा,

living on less than one dollar a day.

I went to a very elitist, snobbish,

मैं एक बेहद संभ्रांत, खडूस,

expensive education in India,

महँगे कॉलेज में पढा, भारत में,

and that almost destroyed me.

और उसने मुझे लगभग पूर्णतः बरबाद कर ही दिया था।

I was all set

सब फ़िक्स था -

to be a diplomat, teacher, doctor --

मैं डिप्लोमेट, शिक्षक, या डॉक्टर बनता --

all laid out.

सब जैसे प्लेट में परोसा पडा था।

Then, I don't look it, but I was the Indian national squash champion

साथ ही, मुझे देख कर ऐसा नहीं लगेगा, मैं स्क्वैश के खेल में भारत का राष्ट्रीय चैंपियन था

for three years.

तीन साल तक लगातार।

The whole world was laid out for me.

सारी दुनिया के अवसर मेरे सामने थे।

Everything was at my feet.

सब जैसे मेरे कदमों में पडा हो।

I could do nothing wrong.

मैं कुछ गडबड कर ही नहीं सकता था।

And then I thought out of curiosity

और तब, यूँही, जिज्ञासावश मैने सोचा कि

I'd like to go and live and work

मैं गाँव जाकर, रहना और काम करना चाहता था

and just see what a village is like.

बस समझने के लिये कि गाँव कैसा होता है।

So in 1965,

इसलिये १९६५ में,

I went to what was called the worst Bihar famine in India,

मैं बिहार गया - वहाँ अब तक का सबसे भीषण अकाल पडा था,

and I saw starvation, death,

और मैनें भूख और मौत का नंगा नाच देखा,

people dying of hunger, for the first time.

पहली बार ठीक मेरे सामने लोग भूख से मर रहे थे।

It changed my life.

उस अनुभव ने मेरा जीवन बदल डाला।

I came back home,

मैं वापस आया,

told my mother,

और मैने अपनी माँ से कहा,

"I'd like to live and work in a village."

"मैं एक गाँव में रहना और काम करना चाहता हूँ।"

Mother went into a coma.

माँ कोमा में चली गयी।

(Laughter)

"What is this?

"ये क्या कह रहा है?

The whole world is laid out for you, the best jobs are laid out for you,

सारी दुनिया के अवसर तेरे सामने हैं, और भरी थाली में लात मार कर तू

and you want to go and work in a village?

एक गाँव में रहना और काम करना चाहता है?

I mean, is there something wrong with you?"

मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा है कि आखिर तुझे हुआ क्या है?"

I said, "No, I've got the best eduction.

मैनें कहा, "नहीं, मुझे सर्वश्रेष्ठ शिक्षा मिली है।

It made me think.

उसने मुझे सोचने पर मजबूर कर दिया है।

And I wanted to give something back

और मैं कुछ वापस देना चाहता हूँ

in my own way."

अपने ही तरीके से।"

"What do you want to do in a village?

"पर तू आखिर एक गाँव में करेगा क्या?

No job, no money,

न रोजगार है, न पैसा है,

no security, no prospect."

I said, "I want to live

मैने कहा, "मै गाँव में रह कर

and dig wells for five years."

पाँच साल तक कुँए खोदना चाहता हूँ।"

"Dig wells for five years?

"पाँच साल तक कुँए खोदेगा?

You went to the most expensive school and college in India,

तू भारत के सबसे महँगे स्कूल और कॉलेज में पढा है,

and you want to dig wells for five years?"

और अब पाँच साल तक कुँए खोदना चाहता है?"

She didn't speak to me for a very long time,

उन्होंने मुझसे बहुत लम्बे समय तक बात तक नही की,

because she thought I'd let my family down.

क्योंकि उन्हें लगा कि मैंने अपने खानदान की नाक कटवा दी है।

But then,

लेकिन इसके साथ ही,

I was exposed to the most extraordinary knowledge and skills

मुझे सीखने को मिला दुनिया के सबसे बेहतरीन ज्ञान और कौशल

that very poor people have,

which are never brought into the mainstream --

which is never identified, respected,

applied on a large scale.

And I thought I'd start a Barefoot College --

और मैनें सोचा कि मैं बेयरफ़ुट कॉलेज की शुरुवात करूँगा --

college only for the poor.

एक कॉलेज केवल गरीबों के लिये।

What the poor thought was important

गरीब लोग क्या सोचते है, ये मुख्य मसला था,

would be reflected in the college.

यही इस कॉलेज की नीव भी थी।

I went to this village for the first time.

इस गाँव में यह मेरा पहला दिन था।

Elders came to me

बडे-बूढे मेरे पास आये

and said, "Are you running from the police?"

और पूछा, "क्या पुलिस से भाग कर छुपे हो?"

I said, "No."

मैने कहा, "नहीं।"

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

"You failed in your exam?"

"परीक्षा में फ़ेल हो गये हो?"

I said, "No."

मैने कहा, "नहीं।"

"You didn't get a government job?" I said, "No."

"तो सरकारी नौकरी नहीं मिल पायी होगी?" मैनें कहा, "वो भी नहीं।"

"What are you doing here?

"तब यहाँ क्या कर रहे हो?

Why are you here?

यहाँ क्यों आये हो?

The education system in India

भारत की शिक्षा व्यवस्था

makes you look at Paris and New Delhi and Zurich;

तो आपको पेरिस और नई-दिल्ली और ज़ुरिख़ के ख़्वाब दिखाती है;

what are you doing in this village?

तुम इस गाँव में क्या कर रहे हो?

Is there something wrong with you you're not telling us?"

तुम कुछ तो ज़रूर छिपा रहे हो हमसे?"

I said, "No, I want to actually start a college

मैने कहा, "नहीं, मैं तो एक कॉलेज खोलने आया हूँ,

only for the poor.

केवल गरीबों के लिये।

What the poor thought was important would be reflected in the college."

गरीब लोगों को जो ज़रूरी लगता है, वही इस कॉलेज में होगा।"

So the elders gave me some very sound and profound advice.

तो बुज़ुर्गों नें मुझे बहुत नेक और सार्थक सलाह दी।

They said, "Please,

उन्होंने कहा, "कृपा करके,

don't bring anyone with a degree and qualification

किसी भी डिग्री-होल्डर या मान्यता-प्राप्त प्रशिक्षित व्यक्ति को

into your college."

अपने कॉलेज में मत लाना।"

So it's the only college in India

लिहाज़ा, ये भारत का इकलौता कॉलेज है

where, if you should have a Ph.D. or a Master's,

जहाँ, यदि आप पी.एच.डी. या मास्टर हैं,

you are disqualified to come.

तो आपको नाकारा माना जायेगा।

You have to be a cop-out or a wash-out or a dropout

आपको या तो पढाई-छोड, या भगोडा, या निलंबित होना होगा

to come to our college.

हमारे कॉलेज में आने के लिये।

You have to work with your hands.

आपको अपने हाथों से काम करना होगा।

You have to have a dignity of labor.

आप को मेहनत की इज़्जत सीखनी होगी।

You have to show that you have a skill that you can offer to the community

आपको ये दिखाना होगा कि आपके पास ऐसा हुनर है जिस से कि लोगों का भला हो सकता है

and provide a service to the community.

और आप समाज को कोई सेवा प्रदान कर सकते हैं।

So we started the Barefoot College,

तो हमने बेयरफ़ुट कॉलेज की स्थापना की,

and we redefined professionalism.

और हमने पेशेवर होने की नई परिभाषा गढी।

Who is a professional?

आख़िर पेशेवर किसको कहा जाये?

A professional is someone

एक पेशेवर व्यक्ति वो है

who has a combination of competence,

जिसके पास हुनर हो,

confidence and belief.

आत्म-विश्वास हो, और भरोसा हो।

A water diviner is a professional.

ज़मीन-तले पानी का पता लगाने वाला पेशेवर है।

A traditional midwife

एक पारंपरिक दाई

is a professional.

एक पेशेवर है।

A traditional bone setter is a professional.

एक कढाई गढने वाला पेशेवर है।

These are professionals all over the world.

सारी दुनिया में ऐसे पेशेवर भरे पडे हैं।

You find them in any inaccessible village around the world.

ये आपको दुनिया के किसी भी दूर-दराज़ गाँव में मिल जायेंगे।

And we thought that these people should come into the mainstream

और हमें लगा कि इन लोगों को मुख्यधारा में आना चाहिये

and show that the knowledge and skills that they have

और दिखाना चाहिये कि इनका ज्ञान और इनकी दक्षता

is universal.

विश्व-स्तर की है।

It needs to be used, needs to be applied,

इसका इस्तेमाल किया जाना ज़रूरी है,

needs to be shown to the world outside --

और इसे बाहरी दुनिया के सामने लाना ज़रूरी है --

that these knowledge and skills

कि ये ज्ञान और कारीगरी

are relevant even today.

आज भी काम की है।

So the college works

तो कॉलेज में

following the lifestyle and workstyle of Mahatma Gandhi.

महात्मा गाँधी की जीवन-शैली और काम के तरीके का पालन होता है।

You eat on the floor, you sleep on the floor, you work on the floor.

आप ज़मीन पर खाते हैं, ज़मीन पर सोते हैं, ज़मीन पर ही चलते हैं।

There are no contracts, no written contracts.

कोई समझौता, लिखित दस्तावेज़ नहीं है।

You can stay with me for 20 years, go tomorrow.

आप मेरे साथ २० साल रह सकते है, और कल जा भी सकते हैं।

And no one can get more than $100 a month.

और किसी को भी $१०० महीने से ज्यादा नहीं मिलता है।

You come for the money, you don't come to Barefoot College.

यदि आप पैसा चाहते हैं, आप बेयरफ़ुट कॉलेज मत आइये।

You come for the work and the challenge,

आप काम और चुनौती के लिये आना चाहते हैं,

you'll come to the Barefoot College.

आप बेयरफ़ुट आ सकते हैं।

That is where we want you to try crazy ideas.

यहाँ हम चाहते हैं कि आप आयें और अपने आइडिया पर काम करें।

Whatever idea you have, come and try it.

चाहे जो भी आपका आइडिया हो, आ कर उस पर काम कीजिये।

It doesn't matter if you fail.

कोई फ़र्क नहीं पडता यदि आप फ़ेल हो गये तो।

Battered, bruised, you start again.

गिर कर, चोट खा कर, आप फ़िर शुरुवात कीजिये।

It's the only college where the teacher is the learner

ये शायद अकेला ऐसा कॉलेज हैं जहाँ गुरु शिष्य है

and the learner is the teacher.

और शिष्य गुरु है।

And it's the only college where we don't give a certificate.

और अकेला ऐसा कॉलेज जहाँ हम सर्टिफ़िकेट नहीं देते हैं।

You are certified by the community you serve.

जिस समुदाय की आप सेवा करते हैं, वो ही आपको मान्यता देता है।

You don't need a paper to hang on the wall

आपको दीवार पर काग़ज़ का टुकडा लटकाने की ज़रूरत नहीं है,

to show that you are an engineer.

ये दिखाने के लिये कि आप इंजीनियर हैं।

So when I said that,

तो जब मैंने ये सब कहा,

they said, "Well show us what is possible. What are you doing?

तो उन्होंने पूछा, "ठीक है, बताओ क्या संभव है. तुम क्या कर रहे हो?

This is all mumbo-jumbo if you can't show it on the ground."

ये सिर्फ़ बतकही है जब तक तुम कुछ कर के नहीं दिखाते।"

So we built the first Barefoot College

तो हमने पहला बेयरफ़ुट कॉलेज बनाया

in 1986.

सन १९८६ में।

It was built by 12 Barefoot architects

इसे १२ बेयरफ़ुट आर्किटेक्टों ने बनाया था,

who can't read and write,

जो कि अनपढ थे,

built on $1.50 a sq. ft.

$1.5 प्रति वर्ग फ़ुट की कीमत में।

150 people lived there, worked there.

१५० लोग यहाँ रहते थे, और काम करते थे।

They got the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2002.

उन्हें २००२ में आर्किटेक्चर का आगा ख़ान पुरस्कार मिला।

But then they suspected, they thought there was an architect behind it.

I said, "Yes, they made the blueprints,

मैने कहा, "हाँ, उन्होंने नक्शे बनाये थे,

but the Barefoot architects actually constructed the college."

मगर बेयरफ़ुट आर्किटेक्टों ने असल में कॉलेज का निर्माण किया।"

We are the only ones who actually returned the award for $50,000,

शायद हम ही ऐसे लोग होंगे जिन्होंने $50,000 का पुरस्कार लौटा दिया,

because they didn't believe us,

and we thought that they were actually casting aspersions

on the Barefoot architects of Tilonia.

I asked a forester --

high-powered, paper-qualified expert --

I said, "What can you build in this place?"

मैने कहा, "इस जगह पर क्या बनाया जा सकता है?

He had one look at the soil and said, "Forget it. No way.

उसने मिट्टी पर एक नज़र डाली और कहा, "यहाँ कुछ नहीं हो सकता।

Not even worth it.

जगह इस लायक नहीं है।

No water, rocky soil."

न पानी है, मिट्टी पथरीली है।"

I was in a bit of a spot.

मैं कठिन परिस्थिति में था।

And I said, "Okay, I'll go to the old man in village

और मैने कहा, "ठीक है, मैं गाँव के बूढे के पास जा कर

and say, 'What should I grow in this spot?'"

पूछूँगा कि, 'यहाँ क्या उगाना चाहिये?'"

He looked quietly at me and said,

"You build this, you build this, you put this, and it'll work."

This is what it looks like today.

और वो जगह आज ऐसी दिखती है।

Went to the roof,

मैं छत पर गया,

and all the women said, "Clear out.

और सारी औरतों ने कहा, "यहाँ से जाओ।

The men should clear out because we don't want to share this technology with the men.

आदमी नहीं चाहिये क्योंकि हम इस तरकीब को आदमियों को नहीं बताना चाहते।

This is waterproofing the roof."

ये छत को वाटरप्रूफ़ करने की तकनीक है।"

(Laughter)

It is a bit of jaggery, a bit of urens

इसमें थोडा गुड है, थोडी पेशाब है

and a bit of other things I don't know.

और ऐसी कई चीजें जो मुझे नहीं पता है।

But it actually doesn't leak.

लेकिन इसमें पानी नहीं चूता है।

Since 1986, it hasn't leaked.

१९८६ से आज तक, पानी नहीं चुआ है।

This technology, the women will not share with the men.

इस तकनीक को, औरतें मर्दों को नहीं बताती हैं।

It's the only college

ये अकेला ऐसा कॉलेज है

which is fully solar-electrified.

All the power comes from the sun.

45 kilowatts of panels on the roof.

छत पर ४५ किलोवाट के पैनल लगे हैं।

And everything works off the sun for the next 25 years.

और सब कुछ अगले २५ सालों तक सिर्फ़ सौर-ऊर्जा से चल सकता है।

So long as the sun shines,

तो जब तक दुनिया में सूरज है,

we'll have no problem with power.

हमें बिजली की कोई समस्या नहीं होगी।

But the beauty is

मगर सबसे बढिया बात ये है कि

that is was installed

by a priest, a Hindu priest,

who's only done eight years of primary schooling --

जो सिर्फ़ आठवीं कक्षा तक पढे हैं --

never been to school, never been to college.

कभी स्कूल नहीं गये, कभी कॉलेज नहीं गये।

He knows more about solar

इन्हें सौर-तकनीकों के बारे में ज्यादा जानकारी है

than anyone I know anywhere in the world guaranteed.

विश्व के किसी भी और व्यक्ति के मुकाबले, ये मेरी गारंटी है।

Food, if you come to the Barefoot College,

भोजन, यदि आप बेयरफ़ुट कॉलेज में आयेंगे,

is solar cooked.

आपको सौर-ऊर्जा से बना मिलेगा।

But the people who fabricated that solar cooker

मगर जिन लोगों ने उस सौर-चूल्हे को बनाया है,

are women,

वो स्त्रियाँ हैं,

illiterate women,

अनपढ स्त्रियाँ,

who actually fabricate

जो अपने हाथ से

the most sophisticated solar cooker.

अत्यंत जटिल सौर-चूल्हा बनाती हैं।

It's a parabolic Scheffler solar cooker.

ये परवलय (पैराबोला) आकारा का बिना रसोइये का चूल्हा है।

Unfortunately, they're almost half German,

दुर्भाग्य से, ये आधी जरमन हैं,

they're so precise.

वो इतनी सूक्ष्मता से नाप-झोक करती हैं।

You'll never find Indian women so precise.

आपको भारतीय महिलायें इतनी सूक्ष्म नाप-तोल करती नहीं मिलेंगी।

Absolutely to the last inch,

they can make that cooker.

And we have 60 meals twice a day

of solar cooking.

We have a dentist --

she's a grandmother, illiterate, who's a dentist.

She actually looks after the teeth

of 7,000 children.

Barefoot technology:

this was 1986 -- no engineer, no architect thought of it --

ये १९८६ है - किसी इंजीनियर, या आर्किटेक्ट इस बारें में नहीं सोचा --

but we are collecting rainwater from the roofs.

मगर हम बारिश के पानी को छत से इकट्ठा कर रहे थे।

Very little water is wasted.

बहुत ही कम पानी बर्बाद होता है।

All the roofs are connected underground

सारी छतों को ज़मीन के नीचे बने

to a 400,000 liter tank,

४००,००० लीटर के टैंक से जोडा हुआ है।

and no water is wasted.

और पानी बर्बाद नहीं होता।

If we have four years of drought, we still have water on the campus,

because we collect rainwater.

60 percent of children don't go to school,

because they have to look after animals --

sheep, goats --

domestic chores.

So we thought of starting a school

तो हमने सोचा कि एक स्कूल खोला जाये

at night for the children.

रात में, बच्चो को पढाने के लिये।

Because the night schools of Tilonia,

क्योंकि तिलोनिया के रात के स्कूलों में

over 75,000 children have gone through these night schools.

७५,००० बच्चों से ज्यादा रात को पढ चुके है,

Because it's for the convenience of the child;

क्योंकि ये बच्चों की सहूलियत के लिये है;

it's not for the convenience of the teacher.

ये शिक्षकों की सहूलियत के लिये नही है।

And what do we teach in these schools?

और हम यहाँ क्या पढाते हैं?

Democracy, citizenship,

प्रजातंत्र, नागरिकता,

how you should measure your land,

अपनी ज़मीनों की नाप कैसे करें,

what you should do if you're arrested,

अगर आपको पुलिस पकड ले, तो क्या करें,

what you should do if your animal is sick.

यदि आपका जानवर बीमार हो जाये, तो क्या करें।

This is what we teach in the night schools.

यही हम रात के स्कूलों में पढाते हैं।

But all the schools are solar-lit.

क्योंकि सारे स्कूल मे सौर-ऊर्जा है।

Every five years

हर पाँच साल में,

we have an election.

हम चुनाव करते हैं।

Between six to 14 year-old children

६ से ले कर १४ साल तक के बच्चे

participate in a democratic process,

इस प्रजातांत्रिक प्रणाली में हिस्सा लेते हैं,

and they elect a prime minister.

और वो एक प्रधानमंत्री चुनते हैं।

The prime minister is 12 years old.

प्रधानमंत्री की उम्र है १२ वर्ष।

She looks after 20 goats in the morning,

वो सुबह २० बकरियों की देखभाल करती है,

but she's prime minister in the evening.

मगर शाम को वो प्रधानमंत्री हो जाती है।

She has a cabinet,

उसका अपना मंत्रिमंडल है,

a minister of education, a minister for energy, a minister for health.

शिक्षा मंत्री, बिजली मंत्री, स्वास्थ-मंत्री।

And they actually monitor and supervise

और वो असल में देखभाल करते है

150 schools for 7,000 children.

करीब १५० स्कूलों के ७००० बच्चों की।

She got the World's Children's Prize five years ago,

पाँच साल पहले उसे विश्व बालक पुरस्कार से नवाजा गया था,

and she went to Sweden.

और वो स्वीडन गयी थी।

First time ever going out of her village.

पहली बार गाँव से बाहर निकली थी।

Never seen Sweden.

कभी स्वीडन देखा नहीं।

Wasn't dazzled at all by what was happening.

लेकिन आसपास की चीज़ों से ज़रा भी प्रभावित नहीं।

And the Queen of Sweden, who's there,

और स्वीडन की रानी, जो वहीं थीं,

turned to me and said, "Can you ask this child where she got her confidence from?

मेरी ओर मुडी, और कहा, "क्या आप इस बच्ची से पूछेंगे कि इतना आत्म-विश्वास कहाँ से आता है?

She's only 12 years old,

ये केवल १२ साल की है,

and she's not dazzled by anything."

और किसी से प्रभावित नहीं होती।"

And the girl, who's on her left,

और वो लडकी, जो उनके बायें ओर है,

turned to me and looked at the queen straight in the eye

and said, "Please tell her I'm the prime minister."

Where the percentage of illiteracy is very high,

जहाँ साक्षरता बहुत कम है,

we use puppetry.

Puppets is the way we communicate.

You have Jokhim Chacha

हमारे पास जोखिम चाचा है,

who is 300 years old.

He is my psychoanalyst. He is my teacher.

ये मेरे मनोवैज्ञानिक हैं। ये ही मेरे शिक्षक हैं।

He's my doctor. He's my lawyer.

यही मेरे चिकित्सक हैं। यही मेरे वकील हैं।

He's my donor.

यही मुझे दान देते हैं।

He actually raises money,

यही धन भी जुटाते हैं,

solves my disputes.

मेरे झगडे भी सुलझाते हैं।

He solves my problems in the village.

ये मेरे गाँव की समस्या का समाधान करते हैं।

If there's tension in the village,

and there's a friction between the teacher and the parent,

So this decentralized, demystified approach

of solar-electrifying villages,

we've covered all over India

from Ladakh up to Bhutan --

लद्दाख से ले कर भूटान तक --

all solar-electrified villages

सब जगहों पर सौर-ऊर्जा

by people who have been trained.

उन लोगों द्वारा लायी जिन्हें प्रशिक्षण दिया गया।

And we went to Ladakh,

और हम लद्दाख गये,

and we asked this woman --

और हमने एक महिला से पूछा --

this, at minus 40, you have to come out of the roof,

कि आप, -४० डिग्री सेंटिग्रेट पर, छत से बाहर आयी हैं,

because there's no place, it was all snowed up on both sides --

क्योंकि बर्फ़ से आजू-बाजू के रास्ते बंद है --

and we asked this woman,

और हमने इस से पूछा,

"What was the benefit you had

"आपको क्या लाभ हुआ

from solar electricity?"

सौर ऊर्जा से?"

And she thought for a minute and said,

और एक मिनट तक सोचने के बाद, उसने कहा,

"It's the first time I can see my husband's face in winter."

"ये पहली बार है कि मैं सर्दियों में अपने पति का चेहरा देख पायी।"

Went to Afghanistan.

हम अफ़्गानिस्तान गये।

One lesson we learned in India

भारत में हमेने एक बात ये सीखी कि

was men are untrainable.

मर्दों को आप कुछ नही सिखा सकते।

(Laughter)

Men are restless,

आदमी उछ्छंखल होते हैं,

men are ambitious,

आदमी महत्वाकांक्षी होते हैं,

men are compulsively mobile,

वो एक जगह टिक कर बैठना नहीं पाते,

and they all want a certificate.

और उन सबको एक प्रमाण-पत्र चाहिये होता है।

(Laughter)

All across the globe, you have this tendency

दुनिया भर में, यही चाहत है

of men wanting a certificate.

आदमियों की, एक प्रमाण-पत्र चाहिये।

Why? Because they want to leave the village

क्यों? क्योंकि वो गाँव छोडना चाहते हैं,

and go to a city, looking for a job.

और शहर जाना चाहते हैं, नौकरी करने के लिये।

So we came up with a great solution:

तो हमने इस का एक बेहतरीन तरीका निकाला"

train grandmothers.

बूढी दादियों को प्रशिक्षण देने का।

What's the best way of communicating

अपनी बात दूर दूर तक फ़ैलाने का

in the world today?

आज की दुनिया में क्या तरीका है?

Television? No.

टेलीविजन? नहीं।

Telegraph? No.

टेलीग्राफ़? नहीं।

Telephone? No.

टेलीफ़ोन? नहीं।

Tell a woman.

एक स्त्री को बता दीजिये बस!

So we went to Afghanistan for the first time,

तो हम पहली बार अफ़्गानिस्तान गयी,

and we picked three women

और हमने तीन स्त्रियों को चुना

and said, "We want to take them to India."

और कहा, "हम इन्हें भारत ले जाना चाहते हैं।"

They said, "Impossible. They don't even go out of their rooms,

उन्होंने कहा, "असंभव। ये तो अपने कमरे तक से बाहर नही निकलती हैं,

and you want to take them to India."

और तुम भारत ले जाने की बात करते हो।"

I said, "I'll make a concession. I'll take the husbands along as well."

मैने कहा, "मैं एक छूट दे सकता हूँ। मैं उनके पतियों को भी साथ ले जाऊँगा।"

So I took the husbands along.

तो मैं उनके पतियों को भी ली आया।

Of course, the women were much more intelligent than the men.

ज़ाहिर है, औरतें आदमियों से कहीं ज्यादा बुद्धिमान होती हैं।

In six months,

छः महीने के भीतर,

how do we train these women?

हम इन औरतों को कैसे बदल दें?

Sign language.

इशारों की भाषा से।

You don't choose the written word.

तब आपक लिखित चीज़ों पर भरोसा नहीं करते।

You don't choose the spoken word.

बोलचाल की भाषा से भी काम नहीं बनता।

You use sign language.

आप इशारों की भाषा इस्तेमाल करते हैं।

And in six months

और छः महीनों में,

they can become solar engineers.

वो सौर-इंजीनियर बन गयीं।

They go back and solar-electrify their own village.

वो वापस जा कर अपने गाँव में सौर-बिजली ले आयीं।

This woman went back

इस स्त्री ने वापस जा कर,

and solar-electrified the first village,

पहली बार किसी गाँव में सौर-बिजली लगायी,

set up a workshop --

एक कारखाना लगाया --

the first village ever to be solar-electrified in Afghanistan

अफ़्गानिस्तान का पहला गाँव जहाँ सौर-बिजली आयी

[was] by the three women.

तीन औरतों द्वारा किया गया था।

This woman

ये स्त्री

is an extraordinary grandmother.

एक महान दादी माँ है।

55 years old, and she's solar-electrified 200 houses for me in Afghanistan.

५५ साल की उम्र में इसने अफ़गानिस्तान में २०० घरों को सौर-बिजली दी है।

And they haven't collapsed.

और ये खराब भी नहीं हुई है।

She actually went and spoke to an engineering department in Afghanistan

ये असल में अफ़्गानिस्तान के इंजीनियरिंग विभाग गयी,

and told the head of the department

और वहाँ के मुख्य-अधिकारी को बता कर आयी

the difference between AC and DC.

कि ए.सी. और डी.सी. में फ़र्क क्या होता है।

He didn't know.

उसे नहीं पता था।

Those three women have trained 27 more women

इन तीन औरतो ने २७ और औरतों को प्रशिक्षण दिया है,

and solar-electrified 100 villages in Afghanistan.

और अफ़्गानिस्तान के १०० गाँवों में सौर-बिजली लगवा दी है।

We went to Africa,

हम अफ़्रीका गये,

and we did the same thing.

और हमने यहे किया।

All these women sitting at one table from eight, nine countries,

ये सारी औरतें जो एक मेज पर बैठी हैं, अलग अलग आठ देशों की हैं,

all chatting to each other, not understanding a word,

सब बतिया रही हैं, मगर बिना एक भी शब्द समझे,

because they're all speaking a different language.

क्योंकि वो सब अलग अलग भाषा बोल रही हैं।

But their body language is great.

मगर इनकी भाव-भंगिमायें गजब की हैं।

They're speaking to each other

ये एक दूसरे से बतिया भी रही है,

and actually becoming solar engineers.

और सौर-इंजीनियर बन रही हैं।

I went to Sierra Leone,

मैं सियरा ल्योन ग्याअ,

and there was this minister driving down in the dead of night --

और वहाँ एक मंत्री से मिला जो रात के घनघोर अँधेरे में ड्राइविंग कर रहे थे --

comes across this village.

एक गाँव पहुँचा।

Comes back, goes into the village, says, "Well what's the story?"

वापस आया, गाँव पहुँचा, और कहा, "इस की क्या कहानी है?"

They said, "These two grandmothers ... "

उन्होंने कहा, "इन दो दादी-मांओं ने..."

"Grandmothers?" The minister couldn't believe what was happening.

"दादियों ने?" मंत्री साहब को भरोसा ही नहीं हुआ।

"Where did they go?" "Went to India and back."

"वो कहाँ गयी थी?" " भारत से लौट कर आयी हैं।"

Went straight to the president.

वो सीखे राष्ट्रपति के पास गया।

He said, "Do you know there's a solar-electrified village in Sierra Leone?"

उसने कहा, "आपको पता है कि सियरा ल्योन में एक सौर-बिजली युक्त गाँव है?"

He said, "No." Half the cabinet went to see the grandmothers the next day.

जवाब मिला, "नहीं।" अगले दिन आधे से ज्यादा मंत्रिमंडल इन औरतों से मिलने आ गया।

"What's the story."

"कहानी क्या है?"

So he summoned me and said, "Can you train me 150 grandmothers?"

तो उन्होंने मुझे बुलाया और कहा, "क्या आप मेरे लिये १५० दादियों को प्रशिक्षण दे सकते हैं?"

I said, "I can't, Mr. President.

मैने कहा, "जी नहीं, महामहिम।

But they will. The grandmothers will."

मगर ये दे सकती हैं। ये दादियाँ।"

So he built me the first Barefoot training center in Sierra Leone.

तो उन्होंने सियरा ल्योन में मेरे लिये पहला बेयरफ़ुट ट्रेनिंग सेंटर बनवाया।

And 150 grandmothers have been trained in Sierra Leone.

और १५० दादियं को सियरा ल्योन में प्रशिक्षण मिल चुका है।

Gambia:

गाम्बिया:

we went to select a grandmother in Gambia.

हम गाम्बिया में एक दादी माँ को चुनने के लिये गये।

Went to this village.

एक गाँव में पहुँचे।

I knew which woman I would like to take.

मुझे पता था कि मैं किस स्त्री को चुनना चाहता हूँ।

The community got together and said, "Take these two women."

सब लोग साथ जुटे और उन्होंने कहा, " इन दो स्त्रियों को ले जायें।"

I said, "No, I want to take this woman."

मैने कहा, "नहीं, मैं तो उसे ले जाना चाहता हूँ।"

They said, "Why? She doesn't know the language. You don't know her."

उन्होंने कहा, "क्यों? उसे तो भाषा भी नहीं आती। आप उसे जानते नहीं हैं।"

I said, "I like the body language. I like the way she speaks."

मैने कहा, "मुझे उसकी भाव-भंगिमायें और बात करने का तरीका अच्छा लगता है।"

"Difficult husband; not possible."

"उसका पति नहीं मानेगा: नहीं होगा।"

Called the husband, the husband came,

तो पति को बुलाया गया, वो आया,

swaggering, politician, mobile in his hand. "Not possible."

अकड से चलता हुआ, नेताओं की तरह, मोबाइल लहराता हुआ। "नही होगा।"

"Why not?" "The woman, look how beautiful she is."

"क्यों नहीं? "उसे देखो, वो कितनी सुंदर है।"

I said, "Yeah, she is very beautiful."

मैने कहा, "हाँ, बहुत सुंदर है।"

"What happens if she runs off with an Indian man?"

"अगर किसी भारतीय आदमी के साथ भाग गयी तो?"

That was his biggest fear.

ये उसका सबसे बडा डर था।

I said, "She'll be happy. She'll ring you up on the mobile."

मैने कहा, "वो खुश रहेगी, और तुम्हें मोबाइल पर कॉल करेगी।"

She went like a grandmother

वो दादी माँ की तरह गयी

and came back like a tiger.

और एक शेरनी बन कर वापस लौटी।

She walked out of the plane

वो हवाई-जहाज से बाहर निकली और

and spoke to the whole press as if she was a veteran.

प्रेस से ऐसे बतियाने लगी जैसे सदा से यही करती रही हो।

She handled the national press,

उसने राष्ट्रीय प्रेस को सम्हाला,

and she was a star.

और वो प्रसिद्ध हो गयी।

And when I went back six months later, I said, "Where's your husband?"

और जब मैं छः महीने बाद उस से मिला, मैने कहा, "तुम्हारा पति कहाँ है?"

"Oh, somewhere. It doesn't matter."

"अरे, कहीं होगा, उस से क्या फ़र्क पडता है।"

I'll just wind up by saying

मैं अपनी बात ये कह कर ख्त्म करना चाहूँगा

that I think you don't have to look for solutions outside.

कि मुझे लगता है कि समाधान आपके अंदर ही होता है।

Look for solutions within.

समस्या का हल अपने अंदर ढूँढिये।

And listen to people. They have the solutions in front of you.

और उन लोगों की बात सुनिये जो आप से पहले समाधान कर चुके हैं

They're all over the world.

सारी दुनिया में ऐसे लोग मौजूद हैं।

Don't even worry.

चिंता ही मत करिये।

Don't listen to the World Bank, listen to the people on the ground.

विश्व बैंक की बात सुनने से बेहतर है कि आप ज़मीनी लोगों की बातें सुनें।

They have all the solutions in the world.

उनके पास दुनिया भर के हल हैं।

I'll end with a quotation by Mahatma Gandhi.

मैं अंत में महात्मा गाँधी की कही बात दोहराना चाहता हूँ।

"First they ignore you,

"पहली वो आपको अनसुना कर देते हैं,

then they laugh at you,

फ़िर वो आप पर हँसते हैं,

then they fight you,

फ़िर वो आपसे लडते हैं,

and then you win."

और फ़िर आप जीते जाते हैं।"
