I went to a very elitist, snobbish,

The whole world was laid out for me.

Everything was at my feet.

I could do nothing wrong.

And then I thought out of curiosity

I'd like to go and live and work

and just see what a village is like.

So in 1965,

ئەوەبو لە ساڵی 1965 دا

I went to what was called the worst Bihar famine in India,

چوم بۆ ئەو شوێنەی بە خراپترین قاتوقڕی بیهار ناودەبرێت لە هیندستان

and I saw starvation, death,

و برسێتی و مردنم بینی

people dying of hunger, for the first time.

بۆ یەکەمجار ئەوەم بینی کە خەڵک لە برسان دەمرن

It changed my life.

I came back home,

گەڕامەوە ماڵەوە

told my mother,

بە دایکمم وت

"I'd like to live and work in a village."

Mother went into a coma.

دایکم لە هۆش خۆی چو

(Laughter)

"What is this?

ئەوە چیە؟

The whole world is laid out for you, the best jobs are laid out for you,

هەمو جیهانت لەبەر دەستدایە، هەمو ئیشە باشەکانت لەبەر دەستدایە

and you want to go and work in a village?

کەچی تۆ دەتەوێ بچیت لە لادێ ئیش بکەیت؟

I mean, is there something wrong with you?"

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، هیچ کێشەیەکت هەیە؟

I said, "No, I've got the best eduction.

وتم نا، من باشترین خوێندنم خوێندووە

It made me think.

ئەمە وای لێ کردوم بیر بکەمەوە

And I wanted to give something back

و دەمویست شتێک ببەخشم لە بەرامبەردا

in my own way."

بە رێگەیەکی تایبەت بە خۆم.

"What do you want to do in a village?

- دەتەوێ چی بکەی لە لادێ؟

No job, no money,

کار نیە، پارە نیە

no security, no prospect."

I said, "I want to live

and dig wells for five years."

و بۆ ماوەی پێنج ساڵ بیر هەڵکەنم.

"Dig wells for five years?

- پێنج ساڵ بیر هەڵکەنیت؟

You went to the most expensive school and college in India,

تۆ چویت بۆ گرانترین خوێندنگە و کۆلێجی هندستان و

and you want to dig wells for five years?"

ئێستاش دەتەوێ بچیت بۆ ماوەی پێنج ساڵ بیر هەڵکەنیت؟

She didn't speak to me for a very long time,

دایکم ماوەیەکی زۆر قسەی لەگەڵ نەکردم

because she thought I'd let my family down.

چونکە وای دەزانی خێزانەکەمان شەرمەزار دەکەم.

But then,

بەڵام دواتر

I was exposed to the most extraordinary knowledge and skills

ئەو نایابترین زانین و شارەزاییەم بەدەست هێنا

that very poor people have,

کە خەڵکە هەرە هەژارەکە هەیانبو

which are never brought into the mainstream --

کە هیچ کاتێ نەهێنراونەتە پێشەوە -

which is never identified, respected,

applied on a large scale.

And I thought I'd start a Barefoot College --

ئینجا بیرم کردەوە کە کۆلێجی بێر فوت - پێپەتی دابمەزرێنم

college only for the poor.

کۆلێجێک بێت تەنیا بۆ هەژاران.

What the poor thought was important

ئەو شتانەی کە خەڵکی هەژار بە گرنگی دەزانن

would be reflected in the college.

لەو کۆلێجەدا رەنگ دەداتەوە

I went to this village for the first time.

بۆ یەکەمجار چوم بۆ ئەم گوندە

Elders came to me

بەتەمەنەکان هاتن بۆ لام

and said, "Are you running from the police?"

وتیان: لە دەست پۆلیس راتکردووە؟

I said, "No."

وتم: نا.

(Laughter)

-پێکەنین-

"You failed in your exam?"

- لە تاقیکردنەوە دەرنەچویت؟

I said, "No."

وتم: نا.

"You didn't get a government job?" I said, "No."

- لە حکومەت دانامەزرێیت؟ وتم: نا

"What are you doing here?

- چی دەکەیت لێرە؟

Why are you here?

بۆچی لێرەیت؟\

The education system in India

سیستمی پەروەردە لە هیندستان

makes you look at Paris and New Delhi and Zurich;

وات لێ دەکات بڕوانیتە پاریس و نیودەلهی و زوریخ

what are you doing in this village?

چی دەکەیت لەم لادێیە؟

Is there something wrong with you you're not telling us?"

کێشەیەکت هەیە کە پێمانی ناڵێیت؟

I said, "No, I want to actually start a college

وتم: نا، دەمەوێت کۆلێجێک دابمەزرێنم

only for the poor.

تەنیا بۆ هەژاران.

What the poor thought was important would be reflected in the college."

ئەو شتانەی هەژاران بە گرنگی بزانن لەم کۆلێجەدا رەنگ دەداتەوە

So the elders gave me some very sound and profound advice.

بەمجۆرە بەتەمەنەکان چەند ئامۆژگارییەکەی باش و بەجێیان کردم.

They said, "Please,

وتیان: تکایە

don't bring anyone with a degree and qualification

کەسی خاوەن بڕوانامە مەهێنە

into your college."

بۆ ناو کۆلێجەکەت.

So it's the only college in India

ئەوە تاکە کۆلێجە لە هندستان

where, if you should have a Ph.D. or a Master's,

کە ئەگەر دکتۆرا یان ماستەرت هەبێت

you are disqualified to come.

مەرجی ئەوەت نابێت بچیت.

You have to be a cop-out or a wash-out or a dropout

پێویستە شکستخواردو بیت و وازت لە خوێندن هێنابێت

to come to our college.

بۆ ئەوەی بتوانیت بێیت بۆ کۆلێجەکەمان.

You have to work with your hands.

پێویستە بە دەستەکانت کار بکەیت

You have to have a dignity of labor.

پێویستە شەرەفی کارکردنت هەبێت

You have to show that you have a skill that you can offer to the community

پێویستە ئەوە دەربخەیت کە شارەزاییەکت هەیە دەتوانیت ببیەخشیت بە کۆمەڵگەکەت

and provide a service to the community.

و خزمەتێک بە کۆمەڵگەکە بگەیەنیت.

So we started the Barefoot College,

بەمجۆرە کۆلێجی بێر فوتمان دامەزراند

and we redefined professionalism.

Who is a professional?

کێ پیشەگەرە؟

A professional is someone

پیشەگەر ئەو کەسەیە

who has a combination of competence,

confidence and belief.

A water diviner is a professional.

A traditional midwife

is a professional.

A traditional bone setter is a professional.

These are professionals all over the world.

ئەمانە لە هەمو جیهاندا پیشەگەرن

You find them in any inaccessible village around the world.

دەتوانیت لە هەمو گوندە دورەدەستەکانی جیهاندا بیاندۆزیتەوە

And we thought that these people should come into the mainstream

و ئێمە بیرمانکردەوە کە پێویستە ئەم کەسانە بێنە پێشەوە

and show that the knowledge and skills that they have

is universal.

It needs to be used, needs to be applied,

needs to be shown to the world outside --

So the college works

following the lifestyle and workstyle of Mahatma Gandhi.

You eat on the floor, you sleep on the floor, you work on the floor.

لەسەر زەوی نان دەخۆیت، لەسەر زەوی دەخەویت، لەسەر زەوی کار دەکەیت.

There are no contracts, no written contracts.

You can stay with me for 20 years, go tomorrow.

Whatever idea you have, come and try it.

It doesn't matter if you fail.

Battered, bruised, you start again.

شکست بهێنیت، دوبارە دەست پێ دەکەیتەوە

It's the only college where the teacher is the learner

ئەوە تاکە کۆلێجە کە مامۆستاکە فێرخوازە

and the learner is the teacher.

و فێرخوازەکە مامۆستایە

And it's the only college where we don't give a certificate.

و تاکە کۆلێجیشە کە بڕوانامە نابەخشێت

You are certified by the community you serve.

بڕوانامەکەت ئەو کۆمەڵگەیە پێتی دەبەخشێت کە خزمەتی دەکەیت

You don't need a paper to hang on the wall

پێویستت بە وەرەقە نیە بە دیوارەکەتدا هەڵیواسیت

to show that you are an engineer.

بۆ ئەوەی دەریبخەیت کە ئەندازیاریت

So when I said that,

بۆیە کە وام وت

they said, "Well show us what is possible. What are you doing?

وتیان: نیشانمان بدە چی دەکرێت؟ تۆ چی دەکەیت؟

This is all mumbo-jumbo if you can't show it on the ground."

ئەگەر نەتوانیت شتەکانت لەسەر ئەرزی واقیع دەربخەیت قسەکانت هیچ بایەخیان نیە

So we built the first Barefoot College

یەکەم کۆلێجی بێر فوتمان دامەزراند

in 1986.

It was built by 12 Barefoot architects

12 ئەندازیاری بێر فوت دروستیان کرد

who can't read and write,

کە نەخوێندەوار بون

built on $1.50 a sq. ft.

150 people lived there, worked there.

They got the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2002.

But then they suspected, they thought there was an architect behind it.

I said, "Yes, they made the blueprints,

but the Barefoot architects actually constructed the college."

We are the only ones who actually returned the award for $50,000,

because they didn't believe us,

and we thought that they were actually casting aspersions

I asked a forester --

I said, "What can you build in this place?"

لێم پرسی: تۆ بیت لەم جێگەیە چی دروست دەکەیت؟

He had one look at the soil and said, "Forget it. No way.

تەماشایەکی خاکەکەی کرد و وتی: فەرامۆشی بکە، ئەستەمە

Not even worth it.

ئەوە ناهێنێت.

No water, rocky soil."

ئاو نیە، زەوییەکەی بەردینە.

I was in a bit of a spot.

And I said, "Okay, I'll go to the old man in village

and say, 'What should I grow in this spot?'"

He looked quietly at me and said,

"You build this, you build this, you put this, and it'll work."

This is what it looks like today.

Went to the roof,

چوم بۆ سەربان

and all the women said, "Clear out.

هەمو ژنەکان وتیان: چۆڵی کە

The men should clear out because we don't want to share this technology with the men.

هەمو پیاوان پێویستە ئێرە بەجێ بهێڵن چونکە نامانەوێ ئەم تەکنەلۆجیایە فێر ببن.

This is waterproofing the roof."

ئەمە سەقفێکە ئاو دانادات

(Laughter)

It is a bit of jaggery, a bit of urens

کەمێک شەکری بۆر و کەمێک میز و

and a bit of other things I don't know.

کەمێک شتی تری تیایە کە من نایزانم

But it actually doesn't leak.

بەڵام بە راستی ئاو دانادات

Since 1986, it hasn't leaked.

لە ساڵی 1986ەوە ئاوی دانەداوە

This technology, the women will not share with the men.

ئەم تەکنەلۆجیایە ژنان فێری پیاوانی ناکەن

It's the only college

تاکە کۆلێجە

which is fully solar-electrified.

کە کارەباکەی بەتەواوی پشت بە وزەی خۆر دەبەستێت

All the power comes from the sun.

45 kilowatts of panels on the roof.

And everything works off the sun for the next 25 years.

So long as the sun shines,

we'll have no problem with power.

But the beauty is

that is was installed

by a priest, a Hindu priest,

who's only done eight years of primary schooling --

never been to school, never been to college.

He knows more about solar

دڵیناتان دەکەم ئەو لە هەمو کەس زیاتر

than anyone I know anywhere in the world guaranteed.

لە وزەی خۆر دەزانێت لە جیهاندا

Food, if you come to the Barefoot College,

خۆراک، ئەگەر تۆ بێیت بۆ کۆلێجی بێر فوت

is solar cooked.

خۆراکەکە بە وزەی خۆر لێ دەنرێت

But the people who fabricated that solar cooker

بەڵام ئەو کەسانەی کە ئەم چێشتلێنەری وزەی خۆرەیان دروستکردووە

are women,

ژنانن

illiterate women,

ژنانی نەخوێندەوار

who actually fabricate

کە لە راستیدا

the most sophisticated solar cooker.

ئاڵۆزترین چێشتلێنەری وزەی خۆریان دروست کردووە

It's a parabolic Scheffler solar cooker.

چێشتلێنەرێکی قوپاوی شێفلەری وزوی خۆرە

Unfortunately, they're almost half German,

بە داخەوە نزیکەی نیوەی ئامێرەکە ئەڵمانییە

they're so precise.

زۆر وردە

(Laughter)

You'll never find Indian women so precise.

هەرگیز ژنی هندی بەو وردییە نادۆزیتەوە

Absolutely to the last inch,

تا دوا ئەندازە وردە

they can make that cooker.

ئەوان دەتوانن ئەو چێشتلێنەرە دروست بکەن

And we have 60 meals twice a day

و رۆژی دو جار بەشی ٦٠ کەس خواردن ئامادە دەکەین

of solar cooking.

We have a dentist --

she's a grandmother, illiterate, who's a dentist.

She actually looks after the teeth

of 7,000 children.

Barefoot technology:

this was 1986 -- no engineer, no architect thought of it --

but we are collecting rainwater from the roofs.

Very little water is wasted.

All the roofs are connected underground

to a 400,000 liter tank,

If we have four years of drought, we still have water on the campus,

because we collect rainwater.

60 percent of children don't go to school,

So we thought of starting a school

بۆیە بیرمان لەوە کردەوە قوتابخانەیەک دابمەزرێنین

at night for the children.

بۆ مناڵان کە شەوان بکرێتەوە

Because the night schools of Tilonia,

بەهۆی قوتابخانەکانی شەوی تیلۆنیاوە

over 75,000 children have gone through these night schools.

زیاد لە 75 هەزار مناڵ بەم قوتابخانەی شەوانەدا تێپەڕیون

Because it's for the convenience of the child;

چونکە ئەمە بۆ رەزامەندی مناڵەکەیە

it's not for the convenience of the teacher.

نەک بۆ رەزامەندی مامۆستاکە.

And what do we teach in these schools?

چی لەم قوتابخانانەدا دەڵێینەوە؟

Democracy, citizenship,

دیموکراسی، هاوڵاتیبون

how you should measure your land,

دەبێت چۆن زەوییەکەت بپێویت

what you should do if you're arrested,

چی دەکەیت ئەگەر دەستگیر کرایت

what you should do if your animal is sick.

چی دەکەیت ئەگەر ئاژەڵێکت نەخۆش کەوت

This is what we teach in the night schools.

ئەمانە ئەو شتانەن لە قوتابخانەی شەودا دەیانڵێینەوە

But all the schools are solar-lit.

بەڵام هەمو ئەم قوتابخانانە بە وزەی خۆر روناککراونەتەوە

Every five years

هەمو پێنج ساڵ جارێک

we have an election.

هەڵبژاردنێک دەکەین

Between six to 14 year-old children

بۆ مناڵانی 6 - 14 ساڵ

participate in a democratic process,

بەشداری پرۆسەیەکی دیموکراسی دەکەن

and they elect a prime minister.

و سەرۆک وەزیر هەڵدەبژێرن

The prime minister is 12 years old.

سەرۆک وەزیر تەمەنی 12 ساڵە

She looks after 20 goats in the morning,

بەیانیان چاودێری 20 بزن دەکات

but she's prime minister in the evening.

بەڵام پاش نیوەڕوان سەرۆک وەزیرە

She has a cabinet,

کابینەیەکی هەیە

a minister of education, a minister for energy, a minister for health.

وەزیری پەروەردە، وەزیری وزە، وەزیری تەندروستی

And they actually monitor and supervise

و ئەوان بە راستی چاودێری و سەرپەرشتی

150 schools for 7,000 children.

150 خوێندنگە و 7000 مناڵ دەکەن

She got the World's Children's Prize five years ago,

پێنج ساڵ لەمەوبەر خەڵاتی مناڵانی جیهانی وەرگرت

and she went to Sweden.

و چو بو سوید

First time ever going out of her village.

یەکەمجار بو لادێیەکەی خۆی بەجێ بهێڵێت

Never seen Sweden.

هەرگیز سویدی نەدیبو

Wasn't dazzled at all by what was happening.

بە هیچ جۆرێک بە روداوەکە سەری نەسوڕمابو

And the Queen of Sweden, who's there,

و شاژنی سوید کە لەوێدایە

turned to me and said, "Can you ask this child where she got her confidence from?

روی تێکردم و وتی "دەتوانی لەم مناڵە بپرسیت ئەم متمانە بەخۆبونەی لەکوێوە هێناوە؟

She's only 12 years old,

تەمەنی تەنیا 12 ساڵە

and she's not dazzled by anything."

و بە هیچ شتێک سەرسام نیە.

And the girl, who's on her left,

و کچەکە، کە لە لای چەپی شاژنەوەیە

turned to me and looked at the queen straight in the eye

روی تێ کردم و تەماشای ناو چاوی شاژنی کرد

and said, "Please tell her I'm the prime minister."

وتی: تکایە پێی بڵێ کە من سەرۆک وەزیرم.

Where the percentage of illiteracy is very high,

we use puppetry.

Puppets is the way we communicate.

You have Jokhim Chacha

who is 300 years old.

and there's a friction between the teacher and the parent,

the puppet calls the teacher and the parent in front of the whole village

and says, "Shake hands.

The attendance must not drop."

So this decentralized, demystified approach

of solar-electrifying villages,

we've covered all over India

ئێمە هەمو هیندستانمان داپۆشیوە

from Ladakh up to Bhutan --

هەر لە لاداکەوە تا بۆتان

all solar-electrified villages

هەمو ئەو گوندانە کارەبای وزەی خۆریان بۆ دابینکراوە

by people who have been trained.

لە لایەن کەسانێکەوە کە راهێنراون.

And we went to Ladakh,

ئێمە چوین بۆ لاداک

and we asked this woman --

و لەم ژنەمان پرسی

this, at minus 40, you have to come out of the roof,

لێرەدا پلەی گەرمی ٤٠ ژێر سەدی بووە و لە سەقفەکەوە هاتە دەرەوە

because there's no place, it was all snowed up on both sides --

چونکە رێگە نەمابو، هەمو لاکان بە بەفر گیرابو

and we asked this woman,

و لەم ژنەمان پرسی

"What was the benefit you had

چ سودێکت بینیوە

from solar electricity?"

لە کارەبای وزەی خۆر؟

And she thought for a minute and said,

بۆ ماوەی خولەکێک بیری کردەوە و وتی

"It's the first time I can see my husband's face in winter."

ئەمە یەکەمجارە بە زستان دەموچاوی هاوسەرەکەم دەبینم.

Went to Afghanistan.

چوین بۆ ئەفغانستان

One lesson we learned in India

وانەیەک کە لە هیندستانەوە فێری بوین ئەوە بو

was men are untrainable.

کە پیاوان راناهێنرێن.

(Laughter)

Men are restless,

پیاوان بێپشون

men are ambitious,

پیاوان بە تەماحن

men are compulsively mobile,

پیاوان گەڕۆکن

and they all want a certificate.

و هەمویان بڕوانامەیان دەوێت

(Laughter)

All across the globe, you have this tendency

لە هەمو جیهاندا ئەمە دەبینیت

of men wanting a certificate.

کە پیاوان بڕوانامەیان دەوێت

Why? Because they want to leave the village

بۆچی؟ چونکە دەیانەوێت لادێ بەجێ بهێڵن

and go to a city, looking for a job.

و بچن بۆ شار، بۆ کار بگەڕێن

So we came up with a great solution:

ئێمە چارەسەرێکی زۆر باشمان دۆزییەوە:

train grandmothers.

راهێنان بە داپیرەکان بکەین.

What's the best way of communicating

باشترین رێگەی پەیوەندیکردن

in the world today?

لەم سەردەمەدا چیە؟

Television? No.

تەلەفزیۆن؟ نا.

Telegraph? No.

تەلەگراف؟ نا.

Telephone? No.

تەلەفون؟ نا.

Tell a woman.

شتەکە بە ژنێک بڵێ.

So we went to Afghanistan for the first time,

بۆ یەکەمجار چوین بۆ ئەفغانستان

and we picked three women

و سێ ژنمان هەڵبژارد

and said, "We want to take them to India."

وتمان: دەمانەوێ بیانبەین بۆ هیندستان

They said, "Impossible. They don't even go out of their rooms,

وتیان: مەحاڵە، تەنانەت ئەوان لە ژورەکانیشیان ناچنە دەرەوە

and you want to take them to India."

تۆ دەتەوێت بیانبەیت بۆ هیندستان.

I said, "I'll make a concession. I'll take the husbands along as well."

وتم: ئیمتیازێکیش دەبەخشم. مێردەکەشی لەگەڵدا دەبەم

So I took the husbands along.

بۆیە مێرەدەکانیشم برد.

Of course, the women were much more intelligent than the men.

بەدڵنیاییەوە ژنەکان زۆر لە پیاوەکان زیرەکتر بون.

In six months,

لە ماوەی شەش مانگدا

how do we train these women?

چۆن راهێنانمان بەم ژنانە کرد؟

Sign language.

بە زمانی ئاماژە

You don't choose the written word.

تۆ وشەی نوسراو هەڵنابژێریت

You don't choose the spoken word.

تۆ وشەی وتراو هەڵنابژێریت

You use sign language.

زمانی ئاماژە بەکاردەهێنیت

And in six months

و لەماوەی شەش مانگدا

they can become solar engineers.

دەتوانن ببن بە ئەندازیاری وزەی خۆر

They go back and solar-electrify their own village.

دەگەڕێنەوە و گوندەکەی خۆیان بە کارەبای وزەی خۆر روناک دەکەنەوە

This woman went back

ئەم ژنە گەڕایەوە

and solar-electrified the first village,

و بە وزەی خۆر کارەبای بۆ یەکەم گوند دابین کرد

set up a workshop --

وۆرکشۆپێکی دامەزراند

the first village ever to be solar-electrified in Afghanistan

ئەمە یەکەم گوندی ئەفغانستان بو کە بە وزەی خۆر کارەبای بۆ دابین بکرێت

[was] by the three women.

لە لایەن ئەم ژنەوە بو.

This woman

ئەم ژنە

is an extraordinary grandmother.

داپیرەیەکی بێوێنەیە

55 years old, and she's solar-electrified 200 houses for me in Afghanistan.

تەمەنی 55 ساڵە، و بە وزەی خۆر کارەبای 200 ماڵی ئەفغانستانی بۆ دابین کردوم

And they haven't collapsed.

و تێک نەچون.

She actually went and spoke to an engineering department in Afghanistan

لە راستیدا چو بو بۆ بەشی ئەندازیاری لە ئەفغانستان

and told the head of the department

و بە سەرۆکی بەشەکەی وتبو

the difference between AC and DC.

جیاوازی نێوان کارەبای تەوژم گۆڕاو و نەگۆڕ لەچیدایە.

He didn't know.

سەرۆکەکە نەیدەزانی.

Those three women have trained 27 more women

ئەو سێ ژنە ٢٧ ژنی تریان فێر کردبو

and solar-electrified 100 villages in Afghanistan.

و بە وزەی خۆر کارەبایان بۆ ١٠٠ گوندی ئەفغانستان دابین کرد

We went to Africa,

چوین بۆ ئەفریقا

and we did the same thing.

و هەمان کارمان کرد

All these women sitting at one table from eight, nine countries,

هەمو ئەم ژنانە لە هەشت نۆ وڵاتەوە هاتونەتە سەر ئەم مێزە

all chatting to each other, not understanding a word,

هەمویان پێکەوە قسە دەکەن و یەک وشەش لە یەکتری تێ ناگەن

because they're all speaking a different language.

چونکە هەریەکە و بە زمانێک قسە دەکات

But their body language is great.

بەڵام زمانی جەستەیان زۆر نایاب بو

They're speaking to each other

قسەیان بۆ یەکتر دەکرد

and actually becoming solar engineers.

و بەڕاستی بون بە ئەندازیاری وزەی خۆر

I went to Sierra Leone,

چوم بۆ سیرالیۆن

and there was this minister driving down in the dead of night --

ئەم وەزیرەی لێ بو کە بە تاریکایی شەو

comes across this village.

بە گوندەکەدا تێپەڕ دەبو

Comes back, goes into the village, says, "Well what's the story?"

گەڕایەوە و پرسی: چیرۆکەکە چیە؟

They said, "These two grandmothers ... "

وتیان: ئەم دو داپیرەیە..

"Grandmothers?" The minister couldn't believe what was happening.

داپیرە؟ وەزیرەکە بڕوای نەدەکرد چی رودەدات.

"Where did they go?" "Went to India and back."

بۆ کوێ چون؟ چون بۆ هیندستان و گەڕاونەتەوە

Went straight to the president.

یەکسەر چون بۆ لای سەرۆک

He said, "Do you know there's a solar-electrified village in Sierra Leone?"

وتی: تۆ دەزانیت لە سیرالیۆن گوندێک هەیە بە وزەی خۆر کارەبای بۆ دابینکراوە؟

He said, "No." Half the cabinet went to see the grandmothers the next day.

وتی نا. رۆژی دواتر نیوەی کابینەی وەزیران چون بۆ لای داپیرەکان.

"What's the story."

چیرۆکەکە چیە؟

So he summoned me and said, "Can you train me 150 grandmothers?"

بانگی کردم وتی: ئایا دەتوانیت راهێنانم بە 150 داپیرە بۆ بکەیت>

I said, "I can't, Mr. President.

وتم: نەخێر سەرۆک کۆماری بەڕێز

But they will. The grandmothers will."

بەڵام ئەوان راهێنانیان پێ دەکەن. داپیرەکان دەیکەن.

So he built me the first Barefoot training center in Sierra Leone.

ئەو یەکەم ناوەندی راهێنانی بێر فوتی بۆ کردمەوە لە سیرالیۆن

And 150 grandmothers have been trained in Sierra Leone.

و 150 داپیرە لە سیرالیۆن راهێنانیان پێ کراوە

Gambia:

گامبیا:

we went to select a grandmother in Gambia.

چوین داپیرەیەک لە گامبیا هەڵبژێرین

Went to this village.

چوین بۆ ئەم گوندە

I knew which woman I would like to take.

دەمزانی دەمەوێت چ ژنێک هەڵبژێرم

The community got together and said, "Take these two women."

کۆمەڵگەکە کۆبونەوە و وتیان: ئەم دو ژنە ببە.

I said, "No, I want to take this woman."

وتم: نا دەمەوێت ئەم ژنە ببەم

They said, "Why? She doesn't know the language. You don't know her."

وتیان: بۆچی؟ زمان نازانێت. تۆ نایناسیت.

I said, "I like the body language. I like the way she speaks."

وتم: من زمانی جەستەم بەدڵە. چۆنێتی قسەکردنیم بەدڵە.

"Difficult husband; not possible."

مێردەکەی رازی نابێت، مەحاڵە

Called the husband, the husband came,

مێردەکەم بانگ کرد، هات

swaggering, politician, mobile in his hand. "Not possible."

خۆبەزلزان بو، مۆبایلێکی بەدەستەوە بو. وتی: نابێ

"Why not?" "The woman, look how beautiful she is."

بۆچی؟ وتی: سەیر کە ژنەکە چەند جوانە

I said, "Yeah, she is very beautiful."

وتم: بەڵێ زۆر جوانە

"What happens if she runs off with an Indian man?"

وتی: ئەی ئەگەر دوای پیاوێکی هیندی کەوت؟

That was his biggest fear.

ئەمە گەورەترین ترسی ئەو بو

I said, "She'll be happy. She'll ring you up on the mobile."

وتم: دڵخۆش دەبێت. بە مۆبایل قسەت لەگەڵ دەکات

She went like a grandmother

وەکو داپیرە رۆیشت

and came back like a tiger.

وەکو پڵنگێک گەڕایەوە.

She walked out of the plane

لە فڕۆکەکە دابەزی

and spoke to the whole press as if she was a veteran.

و قسەی بۆ راگەیاندنەکان کرد، وەکو سەربازێکی دێرین

She handled the national press,

مامەڵەی لەگەڵ راگەیاندنی نەتەوەییدا کرد

and she was a star.

و بو بە ئەستێرە

And when I went back six months later, I said, "Where's your husband?"

دوای شەش مانگ کاتێ گەڕامەوە لێم پرسی: مێردەکەت لەکوێیە؟

"Oh, somewhere. It doesn't matter."

وتی: لەم ناوەیە. گرنگ نیە.

I'll just wind up by saying

بەوە کۆتایی دەهێنم کە بڵێم

that I think you don't have to look for solutions outside.

کە بە بڕوای من پێویست ناکات لە دەرەوە بۆ چارەسەر بگەڕێیت

Look for solutions within.

لە ناوەوە بۆ چارەسەر بگەڕێ.

And listen to people. They have the solutions in front of you.

و گوێ لە خەڵک بگرە. ئەوان لەبەردەمتدا چارەسەریان هەیە.

They're all over the world.

ئەوان لە هەمو شوێنێکی جیهاندان.

Don't even worry.

تەنانەت نیگەرانیش مەبە.

Don't listen to the World Bank, listen to the people on the ground.

گوێ لە بانکی جیهانی مەگرە، گوێ لە خەڵکی مەیدانەکە بگرە

They have all the solutions in the world.

ئەوان هەمو چارەسەرەکانی جیهانیان لەلایە

I'll end with a quotation by Mahatma Gandhi.

بە وتەیەکی مهاتما گاندی کۆتایی دەهێنم کە دەڵێت:

"First they ignore you,

یەکەمجار پشتگوێت دەخەن

then they laugh at you,

پاشان پێت پێ دەکەنن

then they fight you,

ئینجا شەڕت لەگەڵ دەکەن

and then you win."
