I went to this village for the first time.

The education system in India

So we built the first Barefoot College

So we came up with a great solution:

Television? No.

전화일까요? 아닙니다

Tell a woman.

So we went to Afghanistan for the first time,

and we picked three women

and said, "We want to take them to India."

They said, "Impossible. They don't even go out of their rooms,

I said, "I'll make a concession. I'll take the husbands along as well."

So I took the husbands along.

Of course, the women were much more intelligent than the men.

In six months,

how do we train these women?

Sign language.

수화입니다

You don't choose the written word.

서면으로 글을 쓰는 방식은 택하지 않습니다

You don't choose the spoken word.

또 구두 언어도 택하지 않습니다

You use sign language.

And in six months

they can become solar engineers.

They go back and solar-electrify their own village.

This woman went back

and solar-electrified the first village,

55 years old, and she's solar-electrified 200 houses for me in Afghanistan.

And they haven't collapsed.

그리고 그 설치물들은 붕괴되지 않고 잘 있습니다

She actually went and spoke to an engineering department in Afghanistan

and told the head of the department

the difference between AC and DC.

He didn't know.

Those three women have trained 27 more women

and solar-electrified 100 villages in Afghanistan.

We went to Africa,

우리는 또 아프리카로 가서

and we did the same thing.

All these women sitting at one table from eight, nine countries,

이 한 테이블에 앉아 있는 모든 여성은 8~9개국의 나라에서 왔습니다

all chatting to each other, not understanding a word,

한 마디도 이해하고 있지 않은 와중에 서로 수다를 떨고 있습니다

because they're all speaking a different language.

왜냐면 서로 전부 다른 언어를 쓰기 때문이지요

But their body language is great.

그러나 그들의 보디랭귀지는 위대합니다

They're speaking to each other

그들은 서로에게 이야기하고

and actually becoming solar engineers.

실제로 태양전기 엔지니어가 됩니다

I went to Sierra Leone,

제가 시에라 리온에 가는데

and there was this minister driving down in the dead of night --

이 마을을 가로질러 칠흑 같은 밤을 운전해서 가는

comes across this village.

이 장관이 계셨습니다

Comes back, goes into the village, says, "Well what's the story?"

다시 돌아와서, 마을에 가서 말하길, "어떤 이야기가 있는거야?" 라고 말하니

They said, "These two grandmothers ... "

그들이 말하길 "이 두 할머니께서..."라고

"Grandmothers?" The minister couldn't believe what was happening.

"할머니라고?" 그 장관은 무슨 일이 일어났는지 믿을 수 없었죠

"Where did they go?" "Went to India and back."

"그분들 어디로 갔었습니까?" "인도로 갔다가 다시 돌아오셨습니다."

Went straight to the president.

그는 바로 대통령께 보고하러 갔죠

He said, "Do you know there's a solar-electrified village in Sierra Leone?"

그는 "시에라 리온에 태양 전기화가 된 마을이 있다는 걸 알고 계셨습니까?"라고 말했습니다

He said, "No." Half the cabinet went to see the grandmothers the next day.

몰랐다는 답변 직후 내각의 절반이 다음날 할머니 두분을 뵈러 갔습니다

"What's the story."

"어찌 된 일입니까?"

So he summoned me and said, "Can you train me 150 grandmothers?"

그래서 결국 그는 절 불러 "당신이 150명의 할머니를 훈련 시킬 수 있겠소?" 물었죠

I said, "I can't, Mr. President.

전 "대통령님, 전 할 수 없습니다."라고 답했습니다

But they will. The grandmothers will."

"허나, 저 분들께선 할 것입니다"고 답했죠

So he built me the first Barefoot training center in Sierra Leone.

그래서 그가 제게 처음으로 시에라 리온의 맨발의 교육 센터를 지어주었습니다.

And 150 grandmothers have been trained in Sierra Leone.

we went to select a grandmother in Gambia.

Went to this village.

I knew which woman I would like to take.

The community got together and said, "Take these two women."

마을 사람들은 회의를 열어 "이 두 여자를 데려가라."라고 하더군요

I said, "No, I want to take this woman."

전 "아닙니다. 전 이분을 데려갔으면 합니다."라고 했죠

They said, "Why? She doesn't know the language. You don't know her."

그들은 "왜요? 그녀는 언어를 모르고, 당신 또한 그녀를 모르지 않습니까?"라며 묻더군요.

I said, "I like the body language. I like the way she speaks."

"전 그녀의 보디랭귀지가 맘에 듭니다. 그녀가 말하는 방식이 맘에 들어요."라고 답했습니다

"Difficult husband; not possible."

"남편분이 어려운 분입니다. 불가능 할 겁니다"

Called the husband, the husband came,

그래서 남편분을 불렀습니다

swaggering, politician, mobile in his hand. "Not possible."

팔자걸음에, 정치가, 그리고 한 손에 핸드폰을 들고 나타나선 "안됩니다."라고 하더군요

"Why not?" "The woman, look how beautiful she is."

"아니, 왜요?" "이 여자를 보세요. 얼마나 아름답습니까"

I said, "Yeah, she is very beautiful."

전 "네, 그녀는 매우 아름답습니다."라고 답했습니다

"What happens if she runs off with an Indian man?"

"그녀가 인도 남자와 도망가면 어찌합니까?"

That was his biggest fear.

그것이 그의 가장 큰 공포였던 겁니다

I said, "She'll be happy. She'll ring you up on the mobile."

"그녀가 매일 전화하도록 하겠습니다. 허락하면 그녀가 매우 행복해할 겁니다."라며 설득했죠

She went like a grandmother

그녀는 여느 할머니처럼 갔다가

and came back like a tiger.

그리고 호랑이처럼 돌아왔습니다

She walked out of the plane

그녀는 비행기 밖으로 걸어나와

and spoke to the whole press as if she was a veteran.

마치 참전용사처럼 대기하고 있던 기자단에게 말했습니다

She handled the national press,

그녀는 전국 언론들을 처리했고

and she was a star.

스타가 되었습니다

And when I went back six months later, I said, "Where's your husband?"

그리고 제가 6개월 후에 다시 가서 "남편분은 어디 계십니까?"라고 물었을 때

"Oh, somewhere. It doesn't matter."

"어딘가 있겠죠. 상관 없어요"라고 하더군요

that I think you don't have to look for solutions outside.

Look for solutions within.

내부에서, 안에서 해결책을 찾아보십시오

And listen to people. They have the solutions in front of you.

그리고 해결책을 이미 갖고 있는 당신 앞의 사람들의 말을 들어보십시오

They're all over the world.

Don't even worry.

Don't listen to the World Bank, listen to the people on the ground.
