You know, what I do is write for children,

دەزانن، کە من بۆ منداڵان دەنوسم،

and I'm probably America's

و لە ڕاستیدا، دەشێت من پڕخوێنەرترین نوسەری ئەمریکی منداڵان بم.

most widely read children's author, in fact.

And I always tell people

و هەمیشە بە خەڵکی ئەڵێم

that I don't want to show up looking like a scientist.

کە نامەوێت وەکو زانایەک خۆم دەربخەم.

You can have me as a farmer, or in leathers,

دەتوانن وا دا بنێن کە من جوتیارێکم، یان پیاوی چەرم،

and no one has ever chose farmer.

تا ئێستا کەس جوتیاری هەڵنەبژاردووە.

I'm here today to talk to you

من ئەمڕۆ لێرەم تا قسەتان بۆ بکەم

about circles and epiphanies.

دەربارەی بازنەکان و تێگەیشتنەکان.

And you know, an epiphany

و دەزانن، تێگەیشتن

is usually something you find that you dropped someplace.

ئاسایی شتێکە وادەزانی لە شوێنێک لێت کەوت.

You've just got to go around the block

دەبێت تەنها لە دەوری بلۆک بۆی بگەڕێیت

to see it as an epiphany.

وەکو تێگەیشتنێک بیبینی.

That's a painting of a circle.

ئەوە وێنەکێشانی بازنەیەکە.

A friend of mine did that -- Richard Bollingbroke.

هاوڕێیەکی خۆم ئەوەی کرد، ڕیچارد بۆڵینبڕۆک.

It's the kind of complicated circle

ئەوە جۆرێکی بازنەی ئاڵۆزە

that I'm going to tell you about.

کە من لە بارەیەوە پێتان دەڵێم.

My circle began back in the '60s

بازنەکەم لە ٦٠ەکان دەستی پێکرد

in high school in Stow, Ohio

لە ئامادەیی لە ستۆو، ئۆهیۆ

where I was the class queer.

کە من لەوێ نامۆیەکی پۆلەکە بووم.

I was the guy beaten up bloody

کوڕێک بووم هەموو هەفتەیەک لێدانم ئەخوارد لە ژووری کوڕەکان،

every week in the boys' room,

until one teacher saved my life.

هەتا مامۆستایەک ژیانمی پاراست.

She saved my life by letting me go to the bathroom

بە ڕێگەدان بۆ چوونم بۆ ژوری گەرماو ژیانمی پاراست

in the teachers' lounge.

لە هۆڵی مامۆستاکان.

She did it in secret.

ئەو بە نهێنی کردی.

She did it for three years.

بۆ ماوەی سێ ساڵ ئەوەی دەکرد.

And I had to get out of town.

و دەبوو لە شارۆچکەکە بڕۆمە دەرەوە.

I had a thumb, I had 85 dollars,

سەیرم کرد، ٨٥ دۆلارم پێ بوو،

and I ended up in San Francisco, California --

و لە سان فرانسیسکۆ، کالیفۆرنیا جێگیر بووم

met a lover --

خۆشەویستێکم ناسی،

and back in the '80s, found it necessary

لە ٨٠ـکاندا، بە پێویستم زانی

to begin work on AIDS organizations.

لە ڕێکخراوەکانی ئایدز دەست بە کاربکەم.

About three or four years ago,

نزیکەی سێ چوار ساڵ پێش ئێستا،

I got a phone call in the middle of the night

لە نیوەشەودا پەیوەندییەکم بۆ هات

from that teacher, Mrs. Posten,

لەو مامۆستایەوە، مستەر پۆستن،

who said, "I need to see you.

وتی، “پێویستە تۆ ببینم.

I'm disappointed

بێ ئومێدم

that we never got to know each other as adults.

کە هەرگیز وەک پێگەیشتووەکان یەکمان نەناسی.

Could you please come to Ohio,

تکایە دەتوانیت بێیت بۆ ئۆهیۆ،

and please bring that man

و تکایە ئەو پیاوە بهێنە

that I know you have found by now.

کە دەزانم ئێستا دۆزیوتەتەوە.

And I should mention

و پێویستە ئاماژەی پێ بکەم

that I have pancreatic cancer,

کە من شێرپەنجەی پەنکریاسمە،

and I'd like you to please

و تکایە پێم خۆشە تۆ

be quick about this."

خێرا بیت لەو بارەیەوە.”

Well, the next day we were in Cleveland.

باشە، ڕۆژی داهاتو لە کلیڤلاند بووین.

We took a look at her, we laughed, we cried,

سەیرێکی یەکمان کرد، پێکەنین، گریاین،

and we knew that she needed to be in a hospice.

و ئێمە زانیمان ئەو دەبوو لە نەخۆشخانە بێت.

We found her one, we got her there,

ئێمە دۆزیمانەوە، لەوێ بینیمان،

and we took care of her

ئاگامان لێی بوو

and watched over her family,

و چاودێری خێزانەکەیمان کرد،

because it was necessary.

چونکە ئەوە پێویست بوو.

It's something we knew how to do.

ئەوە شتێکە ئێمە دەزانین چۆن بیکەین.

And just as the woman who wanted to know me as an adult

و تەنها وەک ژنێک کە ویستی وەک پێگەیشتوویەک بمناسێت

got to know me,

ناسیمی،

she turned into a box of ashes

سندوقێک خۆڵەمێشی هەڵگرت

and was placed in my hands.

خستییە دەستمەوە.

And what had happened

و ئەوەی ڕوویدا

was the circle had closed,

بازنەیەک بوو داخرا،

it had become a circle --

و دەبوو بە بازنەیەک،

and that epiphany I talked about

و ئەو تێگەیشتنەی دەربارەی قسەم کرد

presented itself.

خۆی پێشکەش کرا.

The epiphany is

تێگەیشتنەکە

that death is a part of life.

ئەوەیە کە مردن بەشێکە لە ژیان.

She saved my life;

ئەو ژیانی منی پاراست،

I and my partner saved hers.

من و هابەشەکەم ئەوانەی ئەومان پاراست.

And you know, that part of life needs everything

و دەزانیت، ئەو بەشەی ژیان هەمووشتی پێویستە

that the rest of life does.

کە ژیانی ماوە دەیکات.

It needs truth and beauty,

پێویستی بە ڕاستی و جوانییە،

and I'm so happy it's been mentioned so much here today.

و من زۆر دڵخۆشم ئەمڕۆ لێرە زۆر ئاماژەی پێدرا.

It also needs --

هەروەها پێویستی بە...

it needs dignity,

پێویستی بە شکۆدارییە،

love and pleasure,

بە خۆشەویستی و خۆشییە،

and it's our job to hand those things out.

و ئەوە ئەرکی ئێمەیە ئەو شتانە بە دەستەوە بدەین.
