You know, what I do is write for children,

मैं बच्चो के लिए कहानियाँ लिखता हूँ ,

and I'm probably America's

और शायद मैं अमेरिका का

most widely read children's author, in fact.

And I always tell people

और मैं हमेशा लोगो से कहता हूँ

that I don't want to show up looking like a scientist.

You can have me as a farmer, or in leathers,

about circles and epiphanies.

And you know, an epiphany

is usually something you find that you dropped someplace.

You've just got to go around the block

to see it as an epiphany.

A friend of mine did that -- Richard Bollingbroke.

It's the kind of complicated circle

that I'm going to tell you about.

My circle began back in the '60s

यह चक्र 60 के दशक में शुरू हुआ था

in high school in Stow, Ohio

ओहियो(Ohio) में स्टोव(Stow) के हाई स्कुल में

where I was the class queer.

जहाँ मैं अपनी क्लास में सबसे अलग था |

I was the guy beaten up bloody

हर हफ्ते लडको के प्रसाधन कक्ष में

every week in the boys' room,

until one teacher saved my life.

She saved my life by letting me go to the bathroom

She did it in secret.

I had a thumb, I had 85 dollars,

and I ended up in San Francisco, California --

met a lover --

and back in the '80s, found it necessary

to begin work on AIDS organizations.

About three or four years ago,

I got a phone call in the middle of the night

from that teacher, Mrs. Posten,

who said, "I need to see you.

उन्होंने कहा "मैं तुमसे मिलना चाहती हूँ "

I'm disappointed

मैं दुखी हूँ कि

that we never got to know each other as adults.

तुम्हारे बड़े होने के बाद हम कभी मिले ही नहीं |

Could you please come to Ohio,

क्या तुम ओहियो(Ohio) आ सकते हो,

and please bring that man

और उस आदमी को भी लेकर आना

that I know you have found by now.

मैं जानती हु जिसे अब तुमने खोज लिया होगा |

And I should mention

और मैं तुम्हे बताना चाहूंगी

that I have pancreatic cancer,

कि मुझे केंसर(cancer) है,

and I'd like you to please

be quick about this."

Well, the next day we were in Cleveland.

तो हम अगले ही दिन क्लीवलैंड(Cleveland) चले गए

We took a look at her, we laughed, we cried,

हम उनसे मिले, साथ में हँसे, साथ में रोये,

and we knew that she needed to be in a hospice.

हमे पता था उन्हें अस्पताल में होना चाहिए था|

We found her one, we got her there,

हम उन्हें एक अस्पताल में लेकर गए,

and we took care of her

उनकी देख रेख की

and watched over her family,

और उनके परिवार का भी ख्याल रखा,

because it was necessary.

क्युकि ये जरुरी था,

It's something we knew how to do.

और हमे पता था कि ये कैसे करना है |

And just as the woman who wanted to know me as an adult

और वो मुझे बड़े होने के बाद मुझसे मिलना चाहती थी

got to know me,

जो वो मिल पायी,

she turned into a box of ashes

उसके बाद वो राख के कलश में बदल गयी

and was placed in my hands.

जो कि मेरे हाथो पर रखा था |

And what had happened

और तब वो

was the circle had closed,

चक्र पूरा हो गया था,

it had become a circle --

ये वो चक्र बन गया

and that epiphany I talked about

और आत्मबोध जिसके बारे में मैंने आपको बताया

presented itself.

और यंहा दिखाया

The epiphany is

आत्मबोध यह है कि

that death is a part of life.

मृत्यु जीवन का हिस्सा है |

She saved my life;

उन्होंने मुझे बचाया था,

I and my partner saved hers.

मैंने और मेरी संगिनी ने उन्हें बचाया |

And you know, that part of life needs everything

और आप जानते हैं , जीवन के इस हिस्से को वही सब चाहिए

that the rest of life does.

जो बाकी जीवन को चाहिए|

It needs truth and beauty,

इसे सत्य और सौंदर्य चाहिए,

and I'm so happy it's been mentioned so much here today.

और मैं बहुत खुश हूँ कि आज हमने इसके बारे में इतनी सारी बात की |

It also needs --

इसे और कुछ भी चाहिए

it needs dignity,

इसे गरिमा, स्नेह

love and pleasure,

और आनंद चाहिए |

and it's our job to hand those things out.

और यह सब बाटना हमारा कर्तव्य है |
