As a teacher, I've internalized this message.

Every day, all around us,

we see the consequences of silence

لە پۆلەکە، من ئالینگاری قوتابییەکانم دەکەم

manifest themselves in the form of discrimination,

بۆ لێکۆلینەوەی لە زانست لە ژیانیان

violence, genocide and war.

لەرێگەی شیعرەوە.

پێکەوە کار دەکەین بۆ پڕ کردنەوەی ئەو بۆشاییانە، بۆ ناسینەوەیان و ناونانیان،

In the classroom, I challenge my students

to explore the silences in their own lives

بۆ تێگەیشتن لەوەی ئەوانە سەرچاوەی شەرم نین.

through poetry.

We work together to fill those spaces,

لە هەوڵدا بۆ دروستکردنی بارودۆخێک لەناو پۆلەکەدا

to recognize them, to name them,

کە قوتابییەکان تیایدا هەست بە ئارامی بکەن

زانیاری بگۆرنەوە بە بێدەنگی،

to understand that they don't have to be sources of shame.

من چوار بنەمای سەرەکیم لەسەر تەختەکە هەیە

In an effort to create a culture within my classroom

کە لە لێشەوەی پۆلەکە دادەنیشن،

کە هەموو قوتابییەک بەژداری دەکات لە سەرەتای ساڵ:

where students feel safe sharing the intimacies

of their own silences,

بە ڕەخنەییەوە بخوێنەوە، بە ئاگایی بنووسە،

I have four core principles posted on the board

بە روونی قسەبکە، و راستی بڵێ.

that sits in the front of my class,

which every student signs at the beginning of the year:

و خۆم بینیوە کە زۆر بیرم لە خاڵی کۆتایی دەکردەوە،

read critically, write consciously,

راستی بلێ.

speak clearly, tell your truth.

و بۆم دەرکەوت

ئەگەر داوا لە قوتابییان بکەم قسە بکەن،

And I find myself thinking a lot about that last point,

پێویستە راستییەکەی بڵێم

tell your truth.

و راستگۆ بم لەگەڵیان دەربارەی کاتەکان

And I realized that

کە شکستم هێناوە تیایدا.

if I was going to ask my students to speak up,

بۆیە پێم وتن کە گەورەبوون،

I was going to have to tell my truth

and be honest with them about the times

where I failed to do so.

So I tell them that growing up,

as a kid in a Catholic family in New Orleans,

during Lent I was always taught

that the most meaningful thing one could do

was to give something up,

sacrifice something you typically indulge in

to prove to God you understand his sanctity.

I've given up soda, McDonald's, French fries,

تێگەیشتم کە گرینگترین شت بتوانم بیکەمە قوربانی

French kisses, and everything in between.

دەنگی خۆم بوو، بەڵام وەک ئەوە بوو هەستم پێ نەکردبێت

But one year, I gave up speaking.

کەوا زۆر لەمێژ بوو وازم لێ هێنابوو.

I figured the most valuable thing I could sacrifice

زۆر لە ژیانم بەسەربرد

was my own voice, but it was like I hadn't realized

بە گوگنی ئەوەی خەڵک دەیانەوێ بیبیستن

لە جیاتی ئەوەی پێویستییانە،

that I had given that up a long time ago.

بە خۆمم وتت کە نەمدەویست ببمە ویژدانی کەس

چونکە هێشتاش دەمەوێت خۆم بم،

I spent so much of my life

بۆیە هەندێکات هیچ ناڵێم،

telling people the things they wanted to hear

instead of the things they needed to,

told myself I wasn't meant to be anyone's conscience

پشگۆێ خستن هەڵدەبژێرم بە بێدەنگ بوونم،

بێ ئاگا لەوەی کە ڕەوایی پێویستی بە وشە نییە

because I still had to figure out being my own,

so sometimes I just wouldn't say anything,

بۆ پەسەند کردنی هەبوون.

کە کریستیان لێی دراچونکە هاورەگەز باز بوو،دەستەکانم خستە باخەڵم

appeasing ignorance with my silence,

و رۆیشتم و سەرم نزم بوو تەنانەت ئەگەر تێبینیشم نەکردبێت.

unaware that validation doesn't need words

نەمتوانی بۆفیەکەم بەکاربێنم بۆ چونکە دامخستبوو

to endorse its existence.

When Christian was beat up for being gay,

بە ئەوە بیریهێنامەوە کە لە لێوم دابوو

I put my hands in my pocket

کاتێک کەسێکی بێماڵ لە قورنەکە

and walked with my head down as if I didn't even notice.

سەیری منی کرد و چاوی بەرز کردبوەوە

بۆ سەلماندنێک کە ئەو شایەنی بینینی بوو.

I couldn't use my locker for weeks because the bolt on the lock

reminded me of the one I had put on my lips

زیاتر قەلەقی شاشەی مۆبایلەکەم بووم

when the homeless man on the corner

وەک زیاتر لە تێر کردنی.

کاتێک ئافرەتەکە لە ئاهەنگەکە گوتی “ شانازیت پێوە دەکەم.

looked at me with eyes up merely searching

for an affirmation that he was worth seeing.

دەبێت زەحمەت بێت فێرکردنی ئەو فەقیرانە، ئەو منداڵە تەمبەڵانە”.

I was more concerned with touching the screen on my Apple

لێوی خۆم گەزیم، چونکە پێویستمان بە پارەی ئەو بو

than actually feeding him one.

When the woman at the fundraising gala

زیاتر لەوەی قوتابییانم پێویستیان بە رێز بوو. کاتی زۆرمان بەسەر برد

said "I'm so proud of you.

It must be so hard teaching those poor, unintelligent kids,"

بە گوێگرتن لەوەی خەڵک دەیڵێت

I bit my lip, because apparently we needed her money

more than my students needed their dignity.

کە زۆر بە دەگمەن گرینگی بەو شتانە دەدەین،

We spend so much time

بێدەنگی پاشماوەی ترسە.

listening to the things people are saying

هەست کردنە بە عەیبەکانت

that we rarely pay attention to the things they don't.

زمانت دەچەوسێنیتەوە.

ئەو هەوایەی لە سینگت دەگەرێتەوە

Silence is the residue of fear.

چونکە هەست بە سەلامەتی ناکات لە سییەکانت.

بێدەنگی جینۆسایدی رواندانە، بێدەنگی کاترینایە.

It is feeling your flaws

gut-wrench guillotine your tongue.

بێدەنگی ئەوەی کە گوێت لێ دەبێت کاتێک جانتای تەواو بەجێ نەماون.

It is the air retreating from your chest

because it doesn't feel safe in your lungs.

ترس ئەو دەنگەی لە سێدارەدانە کە بەستراوەتەوە.

Silence is Rwandan genocide. Silence is Katrina.

ئەوە خەڵوزە، زنجیرە، ئیمتیازە و ئەمە ئازارە

It is what you hear when there aren't enough body bags left.

کات نییە بۆ کۆکردنەوەی شەرەکانت

کە شەرەکان هەر خۆیان کۆیانکردیتەوە.

It is the sound after the noose is already tied.

نایەڵام بێدەنگی خۆی بخاتە ناو بڕیارەکانم.

It is charring. It is chains. It is privilege. It is pain.

من بە کریستیان دەڵێم کە شێرە،

There is no time to pick your battles

رەمزی ئازایەتی و بلیمەتی.

when your battles have already picked you.

پرسیاری ناوی ئەو کەسە بێماڵە دەکەم

I will not let silence wrap itself around my indecision.

و رۆژەکەی چۆن بوو، چونکە هەندێ کات

I will tell Christian that he is a lion,

زۆربەی خەڵک دەیانەوێ مرۆڤ بن.

a sanctuary of bravery and brilliance.

بەو ژنە دەڵێم کە قوتابییەکانم قسەی لەبارەوە دەکەن وەک دواین ناویان ثریو بوو،

I will ask that homeless man what his name is

and how his day was, because sometimes

یان چونکە سەیری حەلقەی “ وایەرت” کردووە

all people want to be is human.

مانای وانییە هیچ بزانی دەربارەی منداڵەکانم.

I will tell that woman that my students can talk about

کەوایە ئەمساڵ،

transcendentalism like their last name was Thoreau,

لە جیاتی واز هێنان لە شتێک،

and just because you watched one episode of "The Wire"

من هەموو رۆژێک دەژیم وەک ئەوەی مایکرۆفۆنێک

doesn't mean you know anything about my kids.

لە ژێر قورگم گیر بووە،

So this year,

قۆناغێک کە لە ژێرەوەی ڕێگری کردنم.

instead of giving something up,

I will live every day as if there were a microphone

چونکە کێ دەبێت سندوقی سابوون هەبێت

tucked under my tongue,

لە کاتێلدا ئەوەی پێویستتە دەنگییەتی؟

a stage on the underside of my inhibition.

سوپاس.

Because who has to have a soapbox
