in a 1968 speech where he reflects upon the Civil Rights Movement,

As a teacher, I've internalized this message.

Every day, all around us,

هەموو ڕۆژێک، هەموو ئەوانەی دەوروبەرمان،

we see the consequences of silence

ئەنجامی بێدەنگی دەبینین

manifest themselves in the form of discrimination,

کە خۆیان بە شێوەی جیاکاری،

violence, genocide and war.

توندوتيژى، كۆمەڵ كوژى و جەنگ دەردەخەن.

In the classroom, I challenge my students

لە پۆلدا، پێشبڕکێ بە خوێندکارانم دەکەم

to explore the silences in their own lives

بۆ ئەوەی درک بە بێدەنگی ژیانیان بکەن

through poetry.

بەهۆی هۆنراوەوە.

We work together to fill those spaces,

کار دەکەین بۆ پڕکردنەوەی ئەو بۆشایانە،

to recognize them, to name them,

بۆ ئەوەی بیانناسینەوە، و ناویان بنێین،

to understand that they don't have to be sources of shame.

بۆ ئەوەی تێبگەین کە نابێت ببن بە سەرچاوەی شەرم بۆمان.

In an effort to create a culture within my classroom

لە هەوڵدان بۆ دروستکردنی کلتورێک لە پۆلدا

where students feel safe sharing the intimacies

کە فێرخوازان بتوانن بێدەنگی خۆیان

of their own silences,

بە ئاسودەیی دەر ببڕن،

I have four core principles posted on the board

من چوار بنەمای سەرەکیم لەسەر تەختەکە نووسیوە

that sits in the front of my class,

تەختەکە لە پێشەوەی پۆلەکەمە،

which every student signs at the beginning of the year:

کە هەموو فێرخوازێک پێش دەسپێکردنی ساڵەکە واژۆی دەکات:

read critically, write consciously,

ڕەخنەگرانە بخوێنەوە، بە ئاگاوە بنووسە،

speak clearly, tell your truth.

بە ڕونی قسە بکە، ڕاستییەکە بڵێ.

And I find myself thinking a lot about that last point,

من زۆر جار بیر لە کۆتا خاڵ دەکەمەوە،

tell your truth.

ڕاستییەکە بڵێ.

And I realized that

ئەوەم بۆ دەرکەوت کە

if I was going to ask my students to speak up,

ئەگەر داوام لە خوێندکارەکانم کردبا قسە بکەن،

I was going to have to tell my truth

ئەوا دەبوو خۆشم ڕاستییەکەم گوتبا و

and be honest with them about the times

ڕاستگۆ بووبام کە چەندین جار

where I failed to do so.

نەم توانیوە ئەو کارە بکەم.

So I tell them that growing up,

بۆیە پێم گوتن کە لەکاتی گەورەبونم دا،

as a kid in a Catholic family in New Orleans,

وەکوو منداڵێک لە خێزانێکی کاسۆلیکی لە شاری نیو ئۆرڵنز،

during Lent I was always taught

لە کاتی ڕۆژوو گرتندا، فێرکرا بووم

that the most meaningful thing one could do

مانادارترین شت کە کەسێک بیکات

was to give something up,

ئەوەیە کە واز لە شتێک بهێنیت،

sacrifice something you typically indulge in

شتێک بکەیتە قوربانی کە چێژی لێ دەبینی

to prove to God you understand his sanctity.

I've given up soda, McDonald's, French fries,

French kisses, and everything in between.

But one year, I gave up speaking.

بەڵام ساڵێک، وازم لە قسەکردن هێنا.

I figured the most valuable thing I could sacrifice

بیرم کردەوە کە گرنگترین شت کە بتوانم بیکەمە قوربانی

was my own voice, but it was like I hadn't realized

دەنگی خۆم بوو، بەڵام وەکوو ئەوە وابوو کە هەستم پێ نەکرد بوو

that I had given that up a long time ago.

کە زۆر دەمێک بوو وازم لێی هێنا بوو.

I spent so much of my life

زۆرێک لە ژیانی خۆم بەسەربرد لە

telling people the things they wanted to hear

گوتنی ئەو قسانەی کە خەڵک دەیویست ببیبستێت

instead of the things they needed to,

لەجیاتی قسە پێویستەکانیان،

told myself I wasn't meant to be anyone's conscience

بە خۆمم گوت من نەم ویستووە ببم بە ویژدانی کەس

because I still had to figure out being my own,

چونکە دەبوو خۆم دۆزیبایەوە،

so sometimes I just wouldn't say anything,

بۆیە هەندێک کات هەر هیچم نە دەگوت،

appeasing ignorance with my silence,

بەردەوام بووم لە فەرامۆش کردن و بێدەنگی

unaware that validation doesn't need words

بێ ئاگا لەوەی کە پەسندکردن پێویستی بە وشە نییە

to endorse its existence.

بۆ دەرخستنی بوونی.

When Christian was beat up for being gay,

کاتێک کرستیان ئازار درا لەبەر نێربازی

I put my hands in my pocket

دەستەکانم خستە ناو گیرفانم

and walked with my head down as if I didn't even notice.

و ڕۆشتم و سەرم نزم کرد وەک ئەوەی کە ئاگام لێی نەبوو بێت.

I couldn't use my locker for weeks because the bolt on the lock

بۆ ماوەی چەند هەفتەیەک نەم دەتوانی سەیری لۆکەرەکە بکەم

reminded me of the one I had put on my lips

چونکە بیری دەخستمەوە کە چۆن دەمم داخست بوو

when the homeless man on the corner

کاتێک پیاوە بێلانەکەی سەر کۆڵانەکە

looked at me with eyes up merely searching

سەری بەرز کردەوە، سەیری کردم بۆ ئەوەی

for an affirmation that he was worth seeing.

دڵنیا ببێتەوە کە ئەو شایەنی سەیر کردنە.

I was more concerned with touching the screen on my Apple

ئەوەندەی حەزم دەکرد کە ئامێرێکی ئەپڵ بەکار بهێنم

than actually feeding him one.

حەزم نە دەکرد سێوێکی پێ بدەم.

When the woman at the fundraising gala

کە ژنەکە لە بۆنەی کۆکردنەوەی پارەدا

said "I'm so proud of you.

گوتی "شانازیت پێوە دەکەم.

It must be so hard teaching those poor, unintelligent kids,"

فێڕکردنی ئەو منداڵە هەژارانە دەبێت زۆر قورس بێت"،

I bit my lip, because apparently we needed her money

گازم لە لێوم گرت، چونکە پێویستمان بە پارەکەی بوو زیاتر

more than my students needed their dignity.

لەوەی کە خوێندکارەکانم پێویستان بە شکۆ بوو

We spend so much time

کاتێکی زۆرمان بەسەر برد

listening to the things people are saying

لە گوێ گرتن لەوەی خەڵکی دەیڵین

that we rarely pay attention to the things they don't.

کە گوێ بەو شتانە نادەین کە نایڵێن.

Silence is the residue of fear.

بێدەنگی پاشماوەی ترسە.

It is feeling your flaws

هەست کردن بە هەڵەکانی خۆتە

gut-wrench guillotine your tongue.

کە دەنگت دەبڕێت و بێدەنگت دەکات.

It is the air retreating from your chest

هەوایە کە لە سینەت دێتە دەرەوە

because it doesn't feel safe in your lungs.

چونکە هەست بە ئاسودەی ناکا لەناو سیەکانتدا

Silence is Rwandan genocide. Silence is Katrina.

بێدەنگی جینیۆسایدی (رواندان)ە. بێدەنگی کاترینایە

It is what you hear when there aren't enough body bags left.

ئەوەیە گوێت لێدەبێت کە کفن نەماوە.

It is the sound after the noose is already tied.

دەنگی دوای لە سێدارەدانە.

It is charring. It is chains. It is privilege. It is pain.

سوتاندنە. زنجیر کردنە. مافی تایبەتە. ئازارە.

There is no time to pick your battles

کات نییە بۆ دیاری کردنی شەڕەکانت

when your battles have already picked you.

کاتێک شەڕەکانت تۆیان هەڵبژاردووە.

I will not let silence wrap itself around my indecision.

ڕێگە بە بێدەنگی نادەم دوو دڵم بکات.

I will tell Christian that he is a lion,

بە کریستیان دەڵێم کە ئەو شێرە،

a sanctuary of bravery and brilliance.

پەرستگای ئازایەتی و بلیمەتییە.

I will ask that homeless man what his name is

لە کەسە بێلانەکە دەپرسم ناوت چییە

and how his day was, because sometimes

و ڕۆژەکەی چۆن بووە، چونکە هەندێ کات

all people want to be is human.

تاکە شت کە خەڵکی دەیانەوێت مرۆڤ بوونە.

I will tell that woman that my students can talk about

transcendentalism like their last name was Thoreau,

and just because you watched one episode of "The Wire"

I will live every day as if there were a microphone

a stage on the underside of my inhibition.

لە جیاتی بێدەنگ بوون، هەموو ناخم دەردەخەم.

Because who has to have a soapbox

چونکە کێ پێویستی بە ستەیجە

when all you've ever needed is your voice?

کاتێک کە تاکە شت پێویستت بێ دەنگی خۆتە؟
