Humanity takes center stage at TED,

مرۆڤایەتی شانۆی تێدی گرتووە،

but I would like to add a voice for the animals,

بەڵام من دەمەوێت پاڵپشتی ئاژەڵان بکەم،

whose bodies and minds and spirits shaped us.

کە جەستە و مێشک و ڕۆحیان داپۆشیوین.

Some years ago, it was my good fortune

چەند ساڵێک لەمەوبەر، بەختێکی باشم هەبوو

to meet a tribal elder on an island

چاوم کەوت بە خانی هۆزێک لە دوورگەیەک

not far from Vancouver.

نزیک شاری ڤانکۆڤەر.

His name is Jimmy Smith,

ناوی (جیمی سمیس) بوو،

and he shared a story with me

چیڕۆکێکی بۆ باسکردم

that is told among his people,

کە لە نێوان خەڵکی باسدەکرێت،

who call themselves the Kwikwasut'inuxw.

کە بەخۆیان دەگووت کویکواسوتەنوک.

Once upon a time, he told me,

ڕۆژێک لە ڕۆژان، پێی گووتم،

all animals on Earth were one.

هەموو ئاژەڵانی سەر زەوی یەکن.

Even though they look different on the outside,

هەرچەندە لە دەرەوە جیاواز دەردەکەون،

inside, they're all the same,

لەناوەوە، هەموویان وەکو یەکن،

and from time to time they would gather

و لە جارێکەوە بۆ جارێکی تر کە کۆدەبنەوە

at a sacred cave deep inside the forest

لە ئەشکەوتە قووڵ و ترسناکەکەی نێو دارستانەکە

to celebrate their unity.

بۆ خۆشی گێڕانی یەکبوونیان.

When they arrived,

کاتێک گەڕانەوە،

they would all take off their skins.

هەموو پێستەکانیان داکەند.

Raven shed his feathers, bear his fur,

قەلەڕەش پەڕەکانی هەڵدەکات، ورچیش کوڵکەکەی،

and salmon her scales,

و سەلەموون پوولەکەکانی،

and then, they would dance.

و دواتر، سەما دەکەن.

But one day, a human made it to the cave

بەڵام ڕۆژێکیان، مرۆڤێک دەچێتە ئەشکەوتەکە

and laughed at what he saw

و پێکەنی بەوەی بینی

because he did not understand.

چونکە تێنەگەیشت لە دۆخەکە.

Embarrassed, the animals fled,

مایەی شەرمەزارییە، ئاژەڵەکان دوورکەوتنەوە،

and that was the last time

و ئەوە کۆتا جاربوو

they revealed themselves this way.

بەم شێوەیە خۆیان داکەند.

The ancient understanding that underneath

ئەو تێگەیشتنە دێرینەی کە لە ژێر

their separate identities, all animals are one,

ناسنامەی جیایان دایە، کە هەموو ئاژەڵان یەکن،

has been a powerful inspiration to me.

بووە سروشێکی بەهێز بۆم.

I like to get past the fur, the feathers

حەز دەکەم کوڵکەکە و پەڕەکان و پوولەکان تێپەڕبکەم.

and the scales.

I want to get under the skin.

دەمەوێت بگەمە ژێر پێستەکە.

No matter whether I'm facing a giant elephant

گرنگ نییە ڕووبەڕووی فیلێکی گەورە دەبمەوە

or a tiny tree frog,

یاخود بۆقێکی داری بچووک،

my goal is to connect us with them, eye to eye.

ئامانجم بەستنی پەیوەندییە لەگەڵیان، چاو لە نێو چاو.

You may wonder, do I ever photograph people?

ڕەنگە بپرسن، هەرگیز وێنەی خەڵکم گرتووە؟

Sure. People are always present in my photos,

بەدڵنیاییەوە. خەڵکی هەمیشە بوونیان هەبووە لە وێنەکانم،

no matter whether they appear

گرنگ نییە دەردەکەون

to portray tortoises

بۆ وێنەگرتنی کیسەڵەکان

or cougars

یاخود پڵنگەکان

or lions.

یاخود شێرەکان.

You just have to learn how to look past their disguise.

تەنها پێویستە فێربیت کە چۆن سەیری خۆحەشاردانی ئەوان بکەیت.

As a photographer,

وەکو وێنەگرێک،

I try to reach beyond the differences

هەوڵدەدەم بگەمە دواوەی جیاوازییەکان

in our genetic makeup

لە تێکەڵەی بۆ ماوەییمان

to appreciate all we have in common

بۆ نرخاندنی ئەو شتانەی تیایدا هاوبەشین

with every other living thing.

لەگەڵ هەموو شتە زیندووەکانی تردا.

When I use my camera,

کاتێک کامێڕاکەم بەکاردەهێنم،

I drop my skin

پێستەکەم فڕێ دەدەم

like the animals at that cave

هاوشێوەی ئاژەڵەکانی ئەشکەوتەکە

so I can show who they really are.

ئینجا دەتوانم شێوەی ڕاستەقینەیان ببینم.

As animals blessed

وەکو پیرۆزی ئاژەڵەکان

with the power of rational thought,

بە هێزی بیرۆکەی ئەقڵی،

we can marvel at the intricacies of life.

دەتوانین سەرسوڕهێنەربین لە ئاڵۆزییەکانی ژیان.

As citizens of a planet in trouble,

کە هاوڵاتییانی ئەم هەسارەیە لە کێشەدان،

it is our moral responsibility

بەرپرسیارییەتی ڕەوشتی ئێمەیە

to deal with the dramatic loss in diversity of life.

بۆ مامەڵەکردن لەگەڵ لەدەستدانی درامایی لە هەمەجۆری ژیان.

But as humans with hearts,

بەڵام وەکو مرۆڤێکی خاوەن دڵ،

we can all rejoice in the unity of life,

دەکرێت هەموومان شادمان بین بە یەکگرتوویی ژیان،

and perhaps we can change

و ڕەنگە بتوانین ئەوە بگۆڕین

what once happened in that sacred cave.

کە لە ئەشکەوتە ترسناکەکە ڕوویدا.

Let's find a way to join the dance.

با ڕێگایەک بدۆزینەوە بۆ بەژداریکردن لە سەمایەکە.
