Humanity takes center stage at TED,

मानवता टेड में केंद्र स्तर लेता है

but I would like to add a voice for the animals,

लेकिन मैं जानवरों के लिए एक आवाज जुटाना चाहता हूँ,

whose bodies and minds and spirits shaped us.

जिनके शरीर और दिमाग और भावनाओं  ने हमें रूप दिया ।

Some years ago, it was my good fortune

कुछ साल पहले, यह मेरा सौभाग्य था

to meet a tribal elder on an island

एक द्वीप पर एक ज्येष्ठ आदिवासी से मिलना

not far from Vancouver.

His name is Jimmy Smith,

and he shared a story with me

that is told among his people,

Once upon a time, he told me,

Even though they look different on the outside,

at a sacred cave deep inside the forest

to celebrate their unity.

When they arrived,

they would all take off their skins.

वे सब अपनी खाल उतार दें ।

Raven shed his feathers, bear his fur,

काला कौआ अपने पंख निकालता , भालू अपनी खाल,

and salmon her scales,

और सैल्मन अपने शल्क ,

and then, they would dance.

और फिर, वे सब  नृत्य करते थे।

But one day, a human made it to the cave

लेकिन एक दिन, एक मानव गुफा तक आ गया

and laughed at what he saw

और उसने जो देखा उसपे हँसा

because he did not understand.

Embarrassed, the animals fled,

शर्मिंदा हो कर, जानवरों भाग गए,

and that was the last time

they revealed themselves this way.

The ancient understanding that underneath

प्राचीन समझ कि

their separate identities, all animals are one,

अपनी अलग पहचान के भीतर, सभी जानवर एक हैं,

has been a powerful inspiration to me.

मेरे लिए एक शक्तिशाली प्रेरणा रही है।

I like to get past the fur, the feathers

मैं परे जाना चाहता हूं खालों के,  पंखों के

and the scales.

और शल्कों के ।

I want to get under the skin.

मैं खाल के अंदर जाना चाहता हूं |

No matter whether I'm facing a giant elephant

कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता कि मैं एक विशाल हाथी का सामना कर रहा हूं

or a tiny tree frog,

या एक छोटे से पेड़ मेंढक का,

my goal is to connect us with them, eye to eye.

मेरा लक्ष्य मनुष्यों को उनसे सहमती से जोड़ना है|

You may wonder, do I ever photograph people?

आप सोच रहे होंगे कि क्या मैं कभी भी लोगों की तस्वीर लेता हूं ?

Sure. People are always present in my photos,

जरुर। लोग, हमेशा मेरी तस्वीरों में मौजूद रहते हैं,

no matter whether they appear

कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता कि वे दिखाई दें

to portray tortoises

कछुओं को चित्रित करते हुए

or cougars

या तेंदुओं को

or lions.

या शेरों को।

You just have to learn how to look past their disguise.

आपको बस सीखना है कैसे उनके भेस के परे देखें |

As a photographer,

एक फोटोग्राफर के रूप में,

I try to reach beyond the differences

मैं मतभेदों से परे पहुँचने की कोशिश करता हूं

in our genetic makeup

हमारे आनुवंशिक मेकअप में

to appreciate all we have in common

उसकी सराहना करने के लिए जो हम सब  में सामान्य है

with every other living thing.

हर दूसरे जीव-जन्तु  के साथ।

When I use my camera,

I drop my skin

मैं अपनी खाल उतार देता हूं

like the animals at that cave

गुफा के उन जानवरों की तरह

so I can show who they really are.

As animals blessed

सौभाग्यशाली जानवरों के रूप में

with the power of rational thought,

तर्कसंगत सोच की शक्ति के साथ

we can marvel at the intricacies of life.

As citizens of a planet in trouble,

it is our moral responsibility

to deal with the dramatic loss in diversity of life.

But as humans with hearts,

we can all rejoice in the unity of life,

and perhaps we can change

what once happened in that sacred cave.

Let's find a way to join the dance.
