And I'm going to paint solar systems on the backs of her hands

so she has to learn the entire universe

before she can say, "Oh, I know that like the back of my hand."

So the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn't coming,

I'll make sure she knows

she doesn't have to wear the cape all by herself,

Because there's nothing more beautiful

You will put the wind in win some, lose some.

And no matter how many land mines erupt in a minute,

be sure your mind lands

on the beauty of this funny place called life.

And yes, on a scale from one to over-trusting,

I am pretty damn naive.

But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar.

It can crumble so easily,

but don't be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.

Remember that good things come in threes

Always apologize when you've done something wrong,

but don't you ever apologize

for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining.

And when they finally hand you heartache,

All right, so I want you to take a moment,

and I want you to think of three things that you know to be true.

واريدكم أن تفكروا في ثلاثة اشياء

They can be about whatever you want --

والتي يمكن ان تكون في اي مجال

technology, entertainment, design,

التكنولوجيا ، والترفيه ، وتصميم ،

your family, what you had for breakfast.

The only rule is don't think too hard.

So here are three things I know to be true.

I know that Jean-Luc Godard was right when he said that,

"A good story has a beginning, a middle and an end,

although not necessarily in that order."

I know that I'm incredibly nervous and excited to be up here,

which is greatly inhibiting my ability to keep it cool.

Okay, so these are three things I know to be true.

حسناً تلك كانت الامور الثلاثة التي أعي انها صحيحة

But there are plenty of things I have trouble understanding.

ولكن لدي الكثير من الامور التي اعاني بمشكلة في فهمها

So I write poems to figure things out.

لذا انا اكتب القصائد لمحاولة تحين مكنونتها

Sometimes the only way I know how to work through something

واحيانا الطريقة الوحيدة التي تمكنني من معرفة الاشياء

is by writing a poem.

Sometimes I get to the end of the poem,

look back and go, "Oh, that's what this is all about,"

and sometimes I get to the end of the poem

and haven't solved anything,

but at least I have a new poem out of it.

Spoken-word poetry is the art of performance poetry.

ان الشعر المقرؤ هو فن أداء الشعر

I tell people it involves creating poetry

و أنا أقول للناس أنه ينطوي ضمن كتابة الشعر

that doesn't just want to sit on paper,

فنحن لا نريد فحسب أن نجلس على الورق ،

that something about it demands it be heard out loud

ان شيئاً في الشعر يتطلب منه ان يكون مسموع الصوت

or witnessed in person.

وان يكون مجسد بالشخص

When I was a freshman in high school,

عندما كنت طالبة في المدرسة الثانوية ،

I was a live wire of nervous hormones.

عشت حياة صاخبة

And I was underdeveloped and over-excitable.

وكنت غير واعية

ومفرطة في الانفعال

And despite my fear

وعلى الرغم من خوفي

of ever being looked at for too long,

من ان ينظر الي من حولي فترة طويلة

I was fascinated by the idea of spoken-word poetry.

كنت مفتونة بفكرة إلقاء الشعر

I felt that my two secret loves, poetry and theater,

شعرت ان لدي شغفين رئيسين .. المسرح .. والشعر

قد تجسدا في حب واحد .. وأنجبا حلمي - إلقاء الشعر -

had come together, had a baby,

وهذا الطفل الجديد .. توجب علي التعرف عليه

a baby I needed to get to know.

لذلك قررت أن أعطي فرصة لهذا الحلم

So I decided to give it a try.

My first spoken-word poem,

وكان القائي الاول للشعر

packed with all the wisdom of a 14-year-old,

امام طفل عمره 14 عاماً

was about the injustice

وكان حول الظلم

of being seen as unfeminine.

كما ينظر إليه من منظور غير أنثوي.

The poem was very indignant,

وكانت قصيدة ساخطة جدا ،

ومبالغ فيها ،

and mainly exaggerated,

but the only spoken-word poetry that I had seen up until that point

وبات الامر الاساسي في إلقاء شعري مذ ذاك الحين

was mainly indignant,

هو السخط

so I thought that's what was expected of me.

ولذلك اعتقد أن هذا ما هو متوقع مني.

The first time that I performed,

المرة الأولى التي ألقيت فيها

the audience of teenagers hooted and hollered their sympathy,

استقبلني الجمهور بالتهليل والتصفيق

and when I came off the stage, I was shaking.

وعندما تقدمت حينها الى المنصة

I felt this tap on my shoulder,

شعرت بالضغط على كتفي

and I turned around to see

والتفت حولي لأرى

this giant girl in a hoodie sweatshirt emerge from the crowd.

فتاة عملاقة تخرج من الجمهور

She was maybe eight feet tall

ربما طولها ثمانية أقدام

and looked like she could beat me up with one hand,

وبدا وكأنها قادمة لكي تضربني بيد واحدة

but instead she just nodded at me and said,

لكن بدلا من ذلك هزت لي رأسها

وقالت : " لا تخافي لقد شعرت بذلك .. "

"Hey, I really felt that. Thanks."

وهنا امتثلت للمسرح

And lightning struck.

ودخلت في الاجواء

I was hooked.

I discovered this bar on Manhattan's Lower East Side

that hosted a weekly poetry open Mic,

and my bewildered, but supportive, parents took me

فوافق والدي على أخذي إلى هناك ودعمي في هذا الخصوص

to soak in every ounce of spoken word that I could.

لكي أخرج ما في نفسي من كلمات بالقدر الذي استطيعه

I was the youngest by at least a decade,

كنت الاصغر حينها .. الاصغر ب10 سنوات على الاقل

but somehow the poets at the Bowery Poetry Club

ولكن بصورة ما الشعراء في ذلك النادي

didn't seem bothered by the 14-year-old wandering about.

لم يمانعوا من وجود مُلقية عمرها 14 عاماً

In fact, they welcomed me.

في الواقع ، قد رحبوا بي.

And it was here, listening to these poets share their stories,

وكان حينها عندما استمعت الى شعرهم وقصصهم

ادركت فحسب انو لا يتوجب ان يكون القاء الشعر يشوبه السخط

that I learned that spoken-word poetry didn't have to be indignant,

فهو يمكن ان يكون مؤلماً .. او مضحكاً

it could be fun or painful

or serious or silly.

جدياً .. او سخيفاً

The Bowery Poetry Club became my classroom and my home,

لقد اصبح نادي الشعر ذاك منزلي .. و صفي الذي اتعلم فيه

and the poets who performed

والشعراء الذين أدوا هناك

encouraged me to share my stories as well.

شجعوني على مشاركة قصصي كذلك.

Never mind the fact that I was 14.

ناهيك عن حقيقة أني كنت ابنة 14 --

They told me, "Write about being 14."

قالوا لي "، أكتبي عن كونك ابنة 14 عاماً "

So I did and stood amazed every week

إذاً .. أديت حينها أدائي .. ووقفت مذهولة

بكل هؤلاء الشعراء الناضجين المبدعين

when these brilliant, grown-up poets

laughed with me and groaned their sympathy

وضحكت معهم .. ودعموني بتعاطفهم

and clapped and told me, "Hey, I really felt that too."

Now I can divide my spoken-word journey

into three steps.

Step one was the moment I said,

"I can. I can do this."

"أنا أستطيع ... أستطيع أن أفعل ذلك."

And that was thanks to a girl in a hoodie.

وكان ذلك بفضل وجود الفتاة في هوديي.

Step two was the moment I said,

والخطوة الثانية لحظة قلت لنفسي ،

"I will. I will continue.

سوف أستمر .. سوف أستمر

I love spoken word. I will keep coming back week after week."

لقد احببت إلقاء الشعر .. وسوف أأتي الى هنا كل اسبوع

And step three began

وبدأت الخطوة الثالثة حين

when I realized I didn't have to write indignant poems,

أدركت أنني يمكنني كتابة قصائد لا تحمل السخط

ان لم يكن الامر يتطلب ذلك

if that's not what I was.

There were things that were specific to me,

هناك أشياء كانت محددة بالنسبة لي ،

and the more that I focused on those things,

the weirder my poetry got,

but the more that it felt like mine.

It's not just the adage "Write what you know."

It's about gathering up all of the knowledge and experience

to help you dive into the things you don't know.

I use poetry to help me work through what I don't understand,

but I show up to each new poem

with a backpack full of everywhere else that I've been.

When I got to university, I met a fellow poet

When I was in high school I had created Project V.O.I.C.E.

And we saw over and over

the way that spoken-word poetry

cracks open locks.

But it turns out sometimes, poetry can be really scary.

Turns out sometimes,

you have to trick teenagers into writing poetry.

So I came up with lists. Everyone can write lists.

And the first list that I assign

if we all started sharing our lists out loud.

At a certain point, you would realize that someone has the exact same thing,

But one of my students, a freshman named Charlotte,

three times my age."

I asked her what that meant,

and she said, "Miss, it's kind of a long story."

And I said, "Charlotte, it sounds pretty interesting to me."

And so she wrote her first poem,

Now, I know that the number one rule to being cool

الآن وأنا أعلم أن تكون مميزاً

فهذا يعني أن تكون رابط الجأش ،

is to seem unfazed,

to never admit that anything scares you

وان لا تعترف بأي شيء يخيفك

او يثيرك .. او يحمسك

or impresses you or excites you.

Somebody once told me

شخص ما قال لي ذات مرة

it's like walking through life like this.

ان هذا يبدو كما المشي في الحياة هكذا ..

You protect yourself

فأنت تحمي نفسك

from all the unexpected miseries or hurt that might show up.

من المآسي والاذية التي قد تظهر نتيجة كشفك لكل الامور .

But I try to walk through life like this.

ولكني أحاول أن أمشي في هذه الحياة هكذا .

And yes, that means catching all of those miseries and hurt,

ونعم هذا يعني اصطياد كل المآسي والأذى ،

but it also means that when beautiful, amazing things

لكنه يعني أيضا أنه عندما تظهر أشياء جميلة و مدهشة

امامي في الحياة

just fall out of the sky,

I'm ready to catch them.

I use spoken word to help my students

rediscover wonder,

to fight their instincts to be cool and unfazed

and, instead, actively pursue being engaged with what goes on around them,

It's not that I think that spoken-word poetry

is the ideal art form.

I'm always trying to find the best way to tell each story.

I write musicals; I make short films alongside my poems.

أكتب المسرحيات الغنائية ، و أصنع أفلاما قصيرة جنبا إلى جنب مع قصائدي.

But I teach spoken-word poetry

ولكني أهتم أكثر ما أهتم بتعليم إلقاء الشعر

لأنه سلس

because it's accessible.

فليس بإمكان الجميع قراءة الموسيقى

Not everyone can read music or owns a camera,

أو تملك كاميرا ،

but everyone can communicate in some way,

لكن يمكن للجميع التواصل بصورة ما

and everyone has stories that the rest of us can learn from.

فالجميع لديه قصص لكي تروى

بحيث يمكن للبقية من أن تتعلم منها .

Plus, spoken-word poetry allows for immediate connection.

بالاضافة الى ذلك ، إلقاء الشعر .. وسيلة تواصل مباشرة

خاصة ان الناس اليوم كثيراً ما تشعر بالوحدة

It's not uncommon to feel like you're alone

بل ويظنون ان احداً لا يستوعبهم ولا يتفهمهم

or that nobody understands you,

but spoken word teaches

ولكن علم الخطابة يعلمك

that if you have the ability to express yourself

ان تعبر عن نفسك

and the courage to present those stories and opinions,

ويحفزك على طرح افكارك وآرائك

you could be rewarded

والاكثر من هذا . ستحصل من جراءه

with a room full of your peers,

على غرفة كاملة من زملائك ،

or your community, who will listen.

أو من مجتمعك ، والذين يستمعون لك ولأفكارك ومشاكلك.

And maybe even a giant girl in a hoodie

وربما ستوجد فتاة ضخمة كتلك التي كانت في هودي

who will connect with what you've shared.

سوف تجد بينها وبينك الكثير من الامور المشتركة

And that is an amazing realization to have,

وهذا شيء رائعٌ جداً يمكنك ان تدركه

especially when you're 14.

خاصة عندما تكون في 14 من عمرك .

Plus, now with YouTube,

و اليوم مع موقع اليوتيوب ،

that connection's not even limited to the room we're in.

لم يعد مفهوم التواصل محتوم بغرفتك

I'm so lucky that there's this archive of performances

أنا محظوظة أن بهذا الأرشيف من العروض

الذي أستطيع أن إعرضه على طلابي.

that I can share with my students.

It allows for even more opportunities

انها تفتح أبواباً جديدة لهم

تمكنهم من إيجاد شاعر أو قصيدة

for them to find a poet or a poem that they connect to.

يمكنهم التناغم معها

Once you've figured this out,

إنه أمرٌ مغري -- بمجرد أن تعي هذا --

it is tempting to keep writing the same poem,

انه مغرٍ ان تستمر بكتابة نفس القصيدة

or keep telling the same story, over and over,

او ان تقص نفس القصة مرة تلو الاخرى

once you've figured out that it will gain you applause.

ما ان تعي ان تلك القصة حين ستُقص سوف تنال التصفيق

It's not enough to just teach that you can express yourself.

وهذا ليس كافياً لان تعلم نفسك كيفية التعبير عن نفسك

You have to grow and explore

فعليك أن تنمو وتستكشف

and take risks and challenge yourself.

وأن تخوض المجازفة وتعلن تحدي نفسك.

And that is step three:

وهذه هي الخطوة الثالثة :

infusing the work you're doing

جبل العمل الذي تقومون به

with the specific things that make you you,

بالصفات الخاصة بك لجعل عملك يعبر عنك أنت

even while those things are always changing.

حتى لو كانت تلك الأمور تتغير دائما.

Because step three never ends.

لأن الخطوة الثالثة لا تنتهي أبدا.

But you don't get to start on step three,

ولكنك لا يمكنك أن تبدأ في الخطوة الثالثة ،

until you take step one first:

حتى يمكنك اتخاذ الخطوة الاولى : وهي قولك أستطيع.

"I can."

أنا أسافر كثيرا من أجل التدريس ،

I travel a lot while I'm teaching,

and I don't always get to watch all of my students reach their step three,

but I was very lucky with Charlotte,

التي تشرفت بأن تابعت رحلتها منذ بدايتها

that I got to watch her journey unfold the way it did.

I watched her realize

that, by putting the things that she knows to be true into the work she's doing,

she can create poems that only Charlotte can write,

about eyeballs and elevators and Dora the Explorer.

And I'm trying to tell stories only I can tell --

I spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to tell this story,

and I wondered if the best way

was going to be a PowerPoint, a short film --

And where exactly was the beginning, the middle or the end?

وأين بالضبط تقع بداية القصة ومضمونها أو نهايتها ؟

I wondered whether I'd get to the end of this talk

وكنت أتساءل ما إذا كنت في نهاية هذا الحديث

and finally have figured it all out, or not.

سوف أعي ذلك أم لا

And I always thought that my beginning was at the Bowery Poetry Club,

واعتقدت دائما أن بدايتي كانت في نادي الشعر

لكن من المحتمل أنها كانت قبل ذلك بكثير.

but it's possible that it was much earlier.

In preparing for TED,

أثناء التحضير لمؤتمر تيد ،

I discovered this diary page in an old journal.

صادفت صفحة المذكرات هذه في مجلة قديمة

I think December 54th was probably supposed to be 24th.

أعتقد كان من المفترض على الأرجح ان المقصود ب 54 ديسمبر هو 24 ديسمبر

It's clear that when I was a child,

من الواضح أنه عندما كنت طفلة ،

I definitely walked through life like this.

مشيت بالتأكيد خلال هذه الحياة هكذا .

I think that we all did.

وأعتقد أننا جميعاً قمنا بذلك

I would like to help others rediscover that wonder --

وأود أن أساعد الآخرين على اكتشاف هذه الروعة --

to want to engage with it, to want to learn,

في التفاعل والتعلم والاحتكاك

to want to share what they've learned,

والمشاركة .. ونقل ما تعلموه

what they've figured out to be true

and what they're still figuring out.

So I'd like to close with this poem.

لذلك أود أن أختتم المحادثة بهذه القصيدة.

عندما قصفت هيروشيما ،

When they bombed Hiroshima,

the explosion formed a mini-supernova,

شكل الانفجار شمساً صغيرة

so every living animal, human or plant

كل حيوان إنسان أو النبات

that received direct contact with the rays from that sun

حظي بهذا الاتصال المباشر

مع أشعة تلك الشمس

was instantly turned to ash.

تحول على الفور إلى رماد.

And what was left of the city soon followed.

و ما تبقى من المدينة سرعان ما تبعهم .

The long-lasting damage of nuclear radiation

الأضرار طويلة الأمد من الإشعاع النووي

caused an entire city and its population

تسببت في تحويل المدينة بأكملها وسكانها

to turn into powder.

When I was born, my mom says I looked around the whole hospital room

عندما ولدت ، أمي قالت لي أني تطلعت حولي في غرفة المستشفى

بنظرة تعبر على أنني كنت هنا من قبل

with a stare that said, "This? I've done this before."

She says I have old eyes.

قالت لي .. انني بدوت انني أملك أعيناً مُسنة في الحياة

When my Grandpa Genji died, I was only five years old,

وعندما توفي جدي جينجي ، كنت حينها إبنة خمس سنوات ،

but I took my mom by the hand and told her,

ولكني أمسك بيد والدتي وقلت لها حينها ..

"Don't worry, he'll come back as a baby."

"لا تقلقي ، سوف يعود كطفل رضيع."

And yet, for someone who's apparently done this already,

ورغم هذا .. لشخص يبدو انه قام بهذا من قبل

I still haven't figured anything out yet.

لم استوعب حتى اليوم شيئاً بصورة تامة

My knees still buckle every time I get on a stage.

فركبتي مازالت تقصف كلما هممت بالصعود الى المسرح

My self-confidence can be measured out

ويمكن قياس ثقتي بنفسي

in teaspoons mixed into my poetry,

بحجم ملاعق الشاي

and it still always tastes funny in my mouth.

ولكنها لا تزال حلوة المذاق في فمي

But in Hiroshima, some people were wiped clean away,

ولكن في هيروشيما ، محي بعض الناس تماماً ،

leaving only a wristwatch or a diary page.

ولم يبق إلا ساعة اليد أو صفحة مذكرات.

So no matter that I have inhibitions to fill all my pockets,

وذلك بغض النظر برغبتي لملء نفسي بتعزية والتي لا تنجح

فأنا استمر بالمحاولة

I keep trying,

hoping that one day I'll write a poem

على أمل أن أكتب قصيدة ذات يوم

I can be proud to let sit in a museum exhibit

يمكنني أن أكون فخورة بأن تعرض في معرض متحف

as the only proof I existed.

كدليل وحيد على أنني كنت موجودة هنا .

لقد سُميتُ سارة ،

My parents named me Sarah, which is a biblical name.

وهو اسم ديني

In the original story, God told Sarah she could do something impossible, and --

في القصة الأصلية قال الله لسارة انه يمكنها ان تفعل شيئا مستحيلا

فضحكت ،

she laughed,

because the first Sarah,

لأن سارة الأولى ،

she didn't know what to do with impossible.

لم تكن تعرف مفهوم كلمة المستحيل

And me?

وأنا .. ايضاً لم اكن أعرفه

Well, neither do I,

but I see the impossible every day.

ولكني أرى المستحيل كل يوم.

Impossible is trying to connect in this world,

المستحيل أن تحاول الاتصال في هذا العالم ،

trying to hold onto others while things are blowing up around you,

أن تحاول التمسك الآخرين في حين ان الامور تتفجر من حولك ،

مع العلم أنه في الحين الذي كنت تتحدث فيه ،

knowing that while you're speaking,

انهم لا ينتظروا دورهم لكي يتحدثوا فحسب .. انهم حقاً يستمعون

they aren't just waiting for their turn to talk -- they hear you.

انهم يشعرون بالضبط بما تشعر أنت به

They feel exactly what you feel

at the same time that you feel it.

وفي نفس الوقت الذي تشعر به أنت

It's what I strive for every time I open my mouth --

انه ما احاول ان احاربه في كل كلمة اتحدث بها

that impossible connection.

ان اتغلب عن هذا التواصل المستحيل

There's this piece of wall in Hiroshima

هناك قطعة من جدار في هيروشيما

that was completely burnt black by the radiation.

احترقت تماما بسبب الإشعاع.

But on the front step, a person who was sitting there

ولكن من الجهة الاخرى .. كان يوجد شخصٌ جالس

blocked the rays from hitting the stone.

حجب الأشعة عن ضرب الحجر.

الشيء الوحيد الذي بقي الآن

The only thing left now

is a permanent shadow of positive light.

هو الظل الدائم للضوء إيجابي.

بعد القنبلة ،

After the A-bomb,

specialists said it would take 75 years

قال خبراء ان الامر سيستغرق 75 عاما

for the radiation-damaged soil of Hiroshima City

لكي تتمكن التربة المصابة بالإشعاع في مدينة هيروشيما

to ever grow anything again.

من أن ينمو أي شيء خلالها مرة أخرى.

But that spring, there were new buds popping up from the earth.

ولكن في هذا الربيع ، كان هناك براعم جديدة ظهرت من الأرض.

When I meet you, in that moment,

عندما إلتقيت بكم ، في تلك اللحظة ،

I'm no longer a part of your future.

أنا لم أعد جزءا من مستقبلكم .

I start quickly becoming part of your past.

فأنا أبدأ الآن بسرعة بأن اصبح جزءا من ماضيكم.

But in that instant, I get to share your present.

ولكن في هذه اللحظة ، انا أشارككم حاضركم

And you, you get to share mine.

And that is the greatest present of all.

I'll probably laugh at you.

I don't know if I can change the world yet,

because I don't know that much about it --

and I don't know that much about reincarnation either,

فأنا لا أعرف الكثير أيضاً عن التطور ونشر الافكار

ولكن إذا إستطعت أن تضحكني بما فيه الكفاية ،

but if you make me laugh hard enough,

قد انسى في أي عصر أنا ..

sometimes I forget what century I'm in.

This isn't my first time here. This isn't my last time here.

هذا ليس ظهوري الاول هنا .. ولن يكون الاخير

وهذه ليست الكلمات الاخيرة التي سوف اشاركها معكم

These aren't the last words I'll share.

But just in case, I'm trying my hardest
