There is hurt, here,

I know that trick; I've done it a million times.

You're just smelling for smoke

so you can follow the trail back to a burning house,

But I know she will anyway,

so instead I'll always keep an extra supply

of chocolate and rain boots nearby,

because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can't fix.

Okay, there's a few that chocolate can't fix.

But that's what the rain boots are for,

I want her to look at the world

through the underside of a glass-bottom boat,

at the galaxies that exist

on the pinpoint of a human mind,

because that's the way my mom taught me.

That there'll be days like this.

When you open your hands to catch

and wind up with only blisters and bruises;

when you step out of the phone booth and try to fly

Because there's nothing more beautiful

And yes, on a scale from one to over-trusting,

I am pretty damn naive.

But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar.

It can crumble so easily,

but don't be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it.

Remember that good things come in threes

Always apologize when you've done something wrong,

but don't you ever apologize

for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining.

Your voice is small, but don't ever stop singing.

And when they finally hand you heartache,

All right, so I want you to take a moment,

and I want you to think of three things that you know to be true.

They can be about whatever you want --

technology, entertainment, design,

your family, what you had for breakfast.

The only rule is don't think too hard.

So here are three things I know to be true.

I know that Jean-Luc Godard was right when he said that,

"A good story has a beginning, a middle and an end,

although not necessarily in that order."

I know that I'm incredibly nervous and excited to be up here,

which is greatly inhibiting my ability to keep it cool.

Okay, so these are three things I know to be true.

ئەمە ئەو سێ شتەیە کە لای من ڕاستن

But there are plenty of things I have trouble understanding.

So I write poems to figure things out.

بۆیە هۆنراوە دەنووسم بع ئەوەی لە شتەکان تێ بگەن

Sometimes the only way I know how to work through something

هەندێ جار تاکە ڕێگە بۆ ئەوەی لە شتێک تێ بگەیت

لە ڕێگەی نوسینی هۆنراوەیەکەوەیە

is by writing a poem.

Sometimes I get to the end of the poem,

وە زۆر جار دەگەمە کۆتای هۆنراوەکە

look back and go, "Oh, that's what this is all about,"

وە سێرێکی دواوە دەکەم و ئەڵێم ئۆو ئێستا دەزانم ئەم شتە دەربارەی چی بوو

وە هەندێ جار دەگەمە کۆتای و

and sometimes I get to the end of the poem

بە هیچ نەگەیشتووم

and haven't solved anything,

but at least I have a new poem out of it.

بەڵام بە لایەنی کەمەوە هۆنراوەیەکی نوێم نووسیوە

Spoken-word poetry is the art of performance poetry.

هۆنراوەی وتراو هونەری پێشکەشکردنی هۆنراوەیە

I tell people it involves creating poetry

من بە خەڵکی دەڵێم کە ئەوە لە نێو داڕشتی هۆنراوەدایە

that doesn't just want to sit on paper,

ئێمە نامانەوێت تەنها لەسەر کاغەزێک دانیشین

that something about it demands it be heard out loud

شتێک لە هۆنراوەدا هەیە کە وای لێ دەکات دەنگی ببیسترێت

or witnessed in person.

When I was a freshman in high school,

I was a live wire of nervous hormones.

And I was underdeveloped and over-excitable.

And despite my fear

of ever being looked at for too long,

I was fascinated by the idea of spoken-word poetry.

بەڵام شەیدای بیرۆکەی خوێندنەوەی هۆنراوە بووم

I felt that my two secret loves, poetry and theater,

هەستم کرد دوو شت هەیە کە زۆر ئارەزویان دەکەم هۆنراواو شانۆ

بەیەک گەیشتن و منداڵێکیان بوو کە ئاویش هۆنراوا خوێندنەوە بوو

had come together, had a baby,

وە ئەم منداڵە تازاەیە دەبوایە بم ناسیایە

a baby I needed to get to know.

بۆیە بڕیارم دا کە چانسێک بدەم بە خەونەکەم

So I decided to give it a try.

My first spoken-word poem,

وە یەکەم هۆنراوام خوێندەوە

packed with all the wisdom of a 14-year-old,

لەبەردام مناڵێکی چواردە ساڵان بوو

was about the injustice

دەربارەی ستەم بوو

of being seen as unfeminine.

کەلە دیدێکی نێرانە دەبینرا

The poem was very indignant,

هۆنراوایەکی زۆر توڕانە بوو

وە زۆر زیادە ڕۆی تیادا کرابوو

and mainly exaggerated,

but the only spoken-word poetry that I had seen up until that point

وە لەو کاتەوە هۆی سەرەکی لە خوێندنەوەی هۆنراوە

was mainly indignant,

بەشێکی سەرەکی تووڕەی بوو

so I thought that's what was expected of me.

لەبەر ئەوە وا هەست ئەکەم هەر ئەوەم لێ چاوەڕوان دەکرێت

The first time that I performed,

یەکەم جار کە هۆنراوام خوێندەوە

the audience of teenagers hooted and hollered their sympathy,

ئامادە بووەکان کە هەرزەکار بوون دەستیان کرد با چەپڵە لێدان

and when I came off the stage, I was shaking.

وە کە لە سەر تەختی شانۆ هاتمە خوارێ دەلەرزیم

I felt this tap on my shoulder,

وە هەستم کرد یەکێک دەستی کێشا بە شانمدا

and I turned around to see

وە کە ئاوڕم دایەوە

this giant girl in a hoodie sweatshirt emerge from the crowd.

کچێکی زۆر باڵا بەرز بو کە لە ناو ئامادە بوانەوە هاتبوو

She was maybe eight feet tall

لەوانەیە بەرزیەکەی هەشت پێ ببێت

and looked like she could beat me up with one hand,

وە وا دیار بوو کە دەتوانێت بە یەک دەستی لێم بدات

but instead she just nodded at me and said,

بەڵام لە جیاتی ئەوە سەری بۆ لەقاندم

وتی:"مەترسە ،هەستم بە هۆنراوەکەت کرد،سوپاس"

"Hey, I really felt that. Thanks."

لەو کاتەوە لەگەڵ شانۆدا ڕاهاتم

And lightning struck.

چومە ناو ئەو جۆرە بار و دۆخەوە

I was hooked.

I discovered this bar on Manhattan's Lower East Side

وە بۆم دەر کەوت کە ئەم تەختی شانۆییە خواروی ڕۆژهەڵاتی مانگاتن

میوانداری خوێندنەوەی هۆنراوای ئازادە دەکرد

that hosted a weekly poetry open Mic,

and my bewildered, but supportive, parents took me

وە باوکم پشتگیری کردم و ڕازی بو بمبات بۆ ئەوێ

to soak in every ounce of spoken word that I could.

بۆ ئەوەی بتوانم کە هەموو ئەو شتانەی لە ناخم دایە بیهێنمە دەرەوە

I was the youngest by at least a decade,

ئەو کاتە زۆر منداڵ بوو، بەلایەنی کەمەوە دە ساڵ لەوانی تر منداڵ تر بووم

but somehow the poets at the Bowery Poetry Club

didn't seem bothered by the 14-year-old wandering about.

بەلایانەوە ئاسای بوو کە کچێکی تەمەن چواردە ساڵ لەگەڵیاندا ئەمادە بێت

In fact, they welcomed me.

لەڕاستیدا ئەوان بەخێرهاتنیان کردم

And it was here, listening to these poets share their stories,

وە لەوێ کاتێک گوێم لە هۆنراوە چیرۆکەکانیان گرت

ئەوە فێر بووم کە مەرج نیە هۆنراوە شێوەیەکی توند و تیژی هەبێت

that I learned that spoken-word poetry didn't have to be indignant,

ئەکرێت بە ئازار بێت،یان پێکەنیناوی بێت

it could be fun or painful

or serious or silly.

یان جدی بێت یان هیچ بێت

The Bowery Poetry Club became my classroom and my home,

ئەو یانەیە وەک و ماڵێکی لێ هاتبوو بۆ من،وەک ئەو پۆلەی کە تیایدا فێر دەبم

and the poets who performed

وە ئەو هۆنەرانەی لەویادا هۆنراوایان پێشکەش کرد

encouraged me to share my stories as well.

Never mind the fact that I was 14.

گوێ مەدەن بەو ڕاستیەی کە من تەمەنم چواردە ساڵان بوو

They told me, "Write about being 14."

پێیان وتم کە بنوسە "دەربارەی کچێکی چواردە ساڵ"

So I did and stood amazed every week

بۆیە نووسم وە هەموو هەفتەیەک سەرسام دەبوون پێم

کاتێک ئەو هۆنەرە گەورە مەزنانە

when these brilliant, grown-up poets

laughed with me and groaned their sympathy

لەگەڵم پێ دەکەنین و بە سۆزیان پشت گیریان دەکردم

and clapped and told me, "Hey, I really felt that too."

چەپڵەیان لێ دەداو پێیان دەوتم "هەستم بەوە کرد کە دەتویست بیگەیەنیت"

Now I can divide my spoken-word journey

ئێستا یەتوانم گەشتی هۆنراوا خوێندنەوەم

into three steps.

بکەم بە سێ قۆناغەوە

Step one was the moment I said,

قۆناغی یەکەم ئەو قۆناغە بوو کە بۆ خۆم دەووت

"I can. I can do this."

"من داتوانم ،دەتوانم ئەوە بکەم.

And that was thanks to a girl in a hoodie.

وە ئەمەش بە هۆی کچە باڵا بەرزەکەوە بوو

Step two was the moment I said,

دوورم قۆناغ ئەو ساتە بوو کە بە خۆمم وتت

"I will. I will continue.

بەردەوام دەبم،من بەردەوام دەبم

I love spoken word. I will keep coming back week after week."

زۆرم حەز لە هۆنراوە خوێندەوەیە من بەردەوام دەبم لەسەر هاتنم هەفتە لەسەر هەفتە

And step three began

وە قۆناغی سێیەم دەستی پێ کرد

when I realized I didn't have to write indignant poems,

کاتێک هەستم بەوە کرد پێویست ناکات هۆنراوەکانم توڕەی بێت

ئەگەر وا نەبم

if that's not what I was.

There were things that were specific to me,

هەندێ شت هەبوون کە دیاری کراو بون بۆ من

and the more that I focused on those things,

وە هەتا زیاتر تەرکیزم بکردایەتە سەر ئەو شتانە

the weirder my poetry got,

هۆنراوەکانم ناوازە تر ئابوون

but the more that it felt like mine.

بەڵام هەستم دەکرد زیاتر لە من دەچوون

It's not just the adage "Write what you know."

شتەکە تەنها پەێڕە و کردنی ئەوە نیە کە ئەڵێت "ئەوەی دەیزانیت بینووسە"

It's about gathering up all of the knowledge and experience

کۆکردنەوەی هەموو عەو زانیاری و ئەزموونانەیە

you've collected up to now

کە تا ئێستا پێکەوەت ناوە

to help you dive into the things you don't know.

یارماتیت دەدات کە بچیتە ناو ‌قوڵای ئەو شتانەی کە نایزانیت

I use poetry to help me work through what I don't understand,

من هۆنراوە بەکار دەهێنم بۆ تێگەشتنی ئەو شتانەی کا ناتوانم لێیان تێ بگەم

but I show up to each new poem

with a backpack full of everywhere else that I've been.

When I got to university, I met a fellow poet

who shared my belief in the magic of spoken-word poetry.

When I was in high school I had created Project V.O.I.C.E.

as a way to encourage my friends to do spoken word with me.

We stayed full-time students, but in between we traveled,

دەوامی خۆمان دەکرد بەڵام لە بنکەیەکدا گەشتمان دەکرد

performing and teaching

وتار بێژیمان نمایش و فێری

nine-year-olds to MFA candidates,

منداڵانی تەمەن نۆ ساڵان دەکرد

from California to Indiana to India

لەکالی فۆڕنیاوە بۆ ئیندیان و بۆ هیندستان

to a public high school just up the street from campus.

بۆ یەکێک لە ئامادەییەکانی بەرامبەر بەشی ناو خۆییەکەمان

And we saw over and over

وە بینیمانەوە دوبارە و دوبارە

the way that spoken-word poetry

ئەو ڕێگەیەی کە هۆنراوە خوێندنەوە

cracks open locks.

But it turns out sometimes, poetry can be really scary.

Turns out sometimes,

you have to trick teenagers into writing poetry.

دەبێت هەرزەکاران بخەڵەتێنین بۆ ئەوەی هۆنراوە بنوسن

So I came up with lists. Everyone can write lists.

وە بیرۆکەیەکم بۆ هاتنووسینی لیست هەموو کەسێک دەتوانێت ئەوە بکات

And the first list that I assign

وە یەکەم لیست لە ژێر ناونیشانی

is "10 Things I Know to be True."

"ئەو دە شتەی کە دەزانم ڕاستە"

وە دواتر ئەمەتان بۆ دەردەکەوێت

And here's what happens, you would discover it too

if we all started sharing our lists out loud.

ئەگەر هەمومان هاوبەشی بەلیستەکانمان بکەین بە دەنگێ

At a certain point, you would realize that someone has the exact same thing,

لە خاڵێکی دیاریکراودا ئەوەتان بۆ دەردەکەوێت

کە کەسێک هەیە کە هەمان ئەو شتانەی هەیە لە لیستەکەدا

or one thing very similar,

یان شتێکی هاوشێوەی ئەوە

to something on your list.

And then someone else

has something the complete opposite of yours.

Third, someone has something you've never even heard of before.

خاڵی سێیەم ئەوەیە لەوانەیە کەسێک شتێک لە ناو لیستەکەی هەبێت کلەوانەیە پێشتر بیستبێتت

Fourth, someone has something you thought you knew everything about,

خاڵی چوارەم چەند کەسێک شتێکیان هەیە کە تۆ پێت وابوو هەموو شتێک دەزانیت دەربارەی

but they're introducing a new angle of looking at it.

بەڵام ئەوان بە شێوازێکی نوێ پێشکەشیان کردووە

And I tell people that this is where great stories start from --

وە من بەو کەسانە دەڵێم ئا ئێرە ئەو شوێنەیە کە چیرۆکی زۆر گرنگی لێوە دەست پێ دەکات

these four intersections

ئەم چوار خاڵە یەکتر بڕە

of what you're passionate about

کە دەربارەی حەز و ئارەزوەکانی تۆیە

and what others might be invested in.

وە لەوانەیە بۆ کەسانێکی تر بوارێکی باشی وەبەر هێنان بێت

And most people respond really well to this exercise.

وە کەسانێک هەن بەڕاستی دێن بە دەم ئەم کارەوە

But one of my students, a freshman named Charlotte,

بەڵام یەکێک لە خوێند کارەکانم کە ناوی شارلوت بوو

was not convinced.

بڕوای بەمە نەبوو

Charlotte was very good at writing lists, but she refused to write any poems.

شارلۆن زۆر باش بوو لە نوسینی لیستەکاندا ،بەڵام ڕەتی کردەوە کە هۆنراوەیەک بنوسێت

"Miss," she'd say, "I'm just not interesting.

خانمەکەم "ئەو وتی من ئاوەزو ناکەم"

I don't have anything interesting to say."

من هیچ شتێکم نیە کە شایەنی باس بێت

So I assigned her list after list,

بەڵام من هانم دەدا لیست لە دوای لیست بنوسێت

and one day I assigned the list

"10 Things I Should Have Learned by Now."

"١٠شت کە ئەبێت فێری ببم لەمەو دوا"

Number three on Charlotte's list was,

خاڵی ژمارە سێ لە لیستەکەی شارتۆن ئەوە بوو

"I should have learned not to crush on guys

پێویستە فێر بم کە حەز لە پیاوانێک نەکەم

three times my age."

کە تەمەنیان سێ ئەوەندەی تەمەنی خۆم بێت

I asked her what that meant,

پێم وت کە ئەمە واتای چی؟

and she said, "Miss, it's kind of a long story."

ئەویش وتی: خانمەکەم،ئەمە جۆرە چیرۆکێکی دوور و درێژە"

And I said, "Charlotte, it sounds pretty interesting to me."

وە من پێم وتت"شارلوت ئەمە زۆر جێگەی باسە لای من"

And so she wrote her first poem,

ئەو کاتە دەستی کرد بە نوسینی یەکەم هۆنراوە

a love poem unlike any I had ever heard before.

And the poem began,

"Anderson Cooper is a gorgeous man."

"Did you see him on 60 Minutes,

racing Michael Phelps in a pool --

nothing but swim trunks on --

diving in the water, determined to beat this swimming champion?

After the race, he tossed his wet, cloud-white hair

and said, 'You're a god.'

No, Anderson, you're the god."

چەپڵە

Now, I know that the number one rule to being cool

ئێستا ئەزانم بۆ یەوەی سەرکەوت و جیاواز بیت

ئەبێت گوێ بە هەندێ شت نەدەیت

is to seem unfazed,

to never admit that anything scares you

هەرگیز دان بە ئەوەدا نەنێیت کە ئەترسیت

یان سەرسامت دەکات،یان پەرۆشت دەکات

or impresses you or excites you.

Somebody once told me

جارێک یەکێک پێی وتم

it's like walking through life like this.

وەک و ئەوە وایە کە بەرەو ژیان بڕۆی ئە ئاوا....

You protect yourself

تۆ هەمیشە لە هەوڵی ئەوەدایت خۆت بپارێزیت

from all the unexpected miseries or hurt that might show up.

لەهەموو ئەو نە خۆشی و ئازارانەی لەناکاو ڕوبەڕوت ئەبێتەوە

But I try to walk through life like this.

بەڵام من بەم شێوەیە بەرەو ژیان دەڕۆم

And yes, that means catching all of those miseries and hurt,

بەڵێ ئەوەش مانای گرتنەوەی هەموو ناخۆشی و ئازارەکانن

but it also means that when beautiful, amazing things

بەڵام بە هەمان شێوە شتە جوانەکان و دڵ خۆش کەرەکان

تەنها بە کەوتنە خوارەوەیان لە ئاسمان

just fall out of the sky,

I'm ready to catch them.

من ئامادەم هەموویان بگرمەوە

I use spoken word to help my students

من وتە بێژی بە کار دەهێنم تاک و یارمەتی خوێندکارەکانم بدەم

rediscover wonder,

وە شتی زۆر سەرسوڕهێنەریان بۆ دیاری دەکەم

to fight their instincts to be cool and unfazed

تاکو بتوانن زاڵ بن بەسەر غەریزەکانیاندا و ئارام بن و گوێ بەهەندێ شت نەدەن

and, instead, actively pursue being engaged with what goes on around them,

so that they can reinterpret and create something from it.

It's not that I think that spoken-word poetry

من ناڵێم وتە بێژی

شێوازێکە لە هوونەر کە زۆر نمونەییە

is the ideal art form.

I'm always trying to find the best way to tell each story.

من هەمیشە هەوڵم داوە کە باشترین ڕێگە بدۆزمەوە بۆ گێڕانەوەی هەریەکە لە چیرۆکەکان

I write musicals; I make short films alongside my poems.

من ئۆپەرتی شانۆی ئەنووسم ،وە کورتە فلیم دروست ئەکەم شان بە شانی هۆنراوەکانم

But I teach spoken-word poetry

بەڵام گرنگیەکی زۆر دەدەم بە خوێندنەوەی هۆنراوە

because it's accessible.

هەموو کەسێک لە توانایدا نیە کە میوزیک بخوێنێتەوە

Not everyone can read music or owns a camera,

یاخود خاوەنی کامێرای خۆی بێت

but everyone can communicate in some way,

and everyone has stories that the rest of us can learn from.

Plus, spoken-word poetry allows for immediate connection.

هەروەها وتە بێژی هۆکارێکی پەیوەندی کردنی خێرایە

It's not uncommon to feel like you're alone

یاخود کەسێک نیە تێیان بگات

or that nobody understands you,

but spoken word teaches

بەڵام وتە بێژی فێری دەکات

that if you have the ability to express yourself

توانای ئەوت هەبێت کە ئەوەی لە ناخت دایە دەری ببڕیت

and the courage to present those stories and opinions,

وە پاڵت پێوە پێوە ئەنێت کە بیر و ڕاو چیرۆکەکانت باس بکەیت

you could be rewarded

هەروەها دەکرێت تۆ پاداشت بکرێیتەوە

with a room full of your peers,

بە ژورێک کە پڕ بێت لە هاوبیرەکانی خۆت

or your community, who will listen.

یان بەو کۆمەڵگەیەی کە گوێ ئەگرێک لە بیر و ڕاو گرفتەکانت

And maybe even a giant girl in a hoodie

یاخود لەوەانەیە کچێکی زەبەنگی وەک ئەوەی من لە هوودی توشی بووم

who will connect with what you've shared.

تۆش بەو شێوەیە لەگەڵ کەسێکی تر بگونجێن و بیر و ڕاکانتان بگۆڕنەوە

And that is an amazing realization to have,

وە ئەمە ڕاستیەکی زۆر مەزنە کە شتێکی وات لێ ڕوبات

especially when you're 14.

Plus, now with YouTube,

that connection's not even limited to the room we're in.

I'm so lucky that there's this archive of performances

من زۆر بەختەوەرم کە ئەرشیفم هەیە بۆ ئەم نمایش و کارانە

that I can share with my students.

It allows for even more opportunities

زۆر هەلی تریان بۆ دەڕەخسێت

for them to find a poet or a poem that they connect to.

کە ئەوان ئەتوانن بەردەوام لە پەیوەندیدا بن

Once you've figured this out,

زۆر هەستێکی خۆشە کاتێک ئەوەت بۆ دەردەکەوێت

it is tempting to keep writing the same poem,

کاتێک کەهەمان هۆنراوە دەنوسینەوە

or keep telling the same story, over and over,

یان هەمان جیرۆک دووبارە و دووبارە دەگێڕیتەوە

once you've figured out that it will gain you applause.

کاتێک کە بۆت دەردەکەوێت کە ئەوە مایەی چەپڵە لێدان و دەست خۆشی کردنە

It's not enough to just teach that you can express yourself.

وە ئەمە تەنها بەس نیە کە تۆ فێر ببیت ناخی خۆت دەرببڕیت

You have to grow and explore

بەڵکو تۆ پێویستە زیاتر گەشە بکەیت و بۆ زانیاری بگەڕێیت

and take risks and challenge yourself.

ئەبێت هەنگاوی بوێرانە بنێیت و بەرەنگاری خۆت بکەیت

And that is step three:

وە ئەوەش هەنگاوی سێیەمە

infusing the work you're doing

بۆ زیاتر نرخ ڕاگرتنی ئەو کارەی کە دەیکەیت

with the specific things that make you you,

لەڕێگەی ئەو خاسیەتە تایبەتیانەی خۆت کە وا بکات بەرهەمەکەت دەربڕین لە خۆت بکات

even while those things are always changing.

هەرچەندە ئەگەر ئەم شتانەش بەردەوام لە گۆڕانکاریدا بن

Because step three never ends.

لەبەر ئەوەی هەنگاوی سێ هەرگیز کۆتای نایەت

But you don't get to start on step three,

بەڵام نابێت لە خاڵی سێیەمەوە دەست پێ بکەیت

until you take step one first:

هەتا خاڵی یەک نەبڕیت کە ئەویش ئەوەیە کە بڵێیت : بەڵێ من ئەتوانم

"I can."

من زۆر سەفەر ئەکەم بە مەبەستی فێر بوون

I travel a lot while I'm teaching,

and I don't always get to watch all of my students reach their step three,

زۆر پەرۆش ئەبم کە ئەبینم خوێند کارەکانم ئەگەنە هەنگاوی سێ

بەڵام من زۆر بەختەوەر بووم لەگەڵ شارلوت

but I was very lucky with Charlotte,

کە توانیم هەرلە سەرەتاوە هەنگاو بە هەنگاو لەگەڵی دابم و ببینم

that I got to watch her journey unfold the way it did.

I watched her realize

من چاودێریم ئەکرد لە هەموو هەنگاوەکانیدا

that, by putting the things that she knows to be true into the work she's doing,

she can create poems that only Charlotte can write,

And I'm trying to tell stories only I can tell --

like this story.

I spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to tell this story,

زۆر کاتم بەسەر برد بۆ گێڕانەوەی ئەم چیرۆکە بە باشتین شێوە

and I wondered if the best way

وە پرسیارم لە خۆم ئەکرد ئایا باشترین ڕێگە

was going to be a PowerPoint, a short film --

ئەوەیە کە بە پاوەرپۆینت پێشکەشی بکەم یان بە شێوەی کورتە فلیم

And where exactly was the beginning, the middle or the end?

وە سەرەتاکەی لە کوێوە دەست پێ بکەم؟،یان ناوەڕاستەکەی یان کۆتاییەکەی؟

I wondered whether I'd get to the end of this talk

ئایا بە باشی ئەگەمە کۆتای قسەکانم؟

and finally have figured it all out, or not.

And I always thought that my beginning was at the Bowery Poetry Club,

I think December 54th was probably supposed to be 24th.

It's clear that when I was a child,

ئەوەی ڕونە ئەوەیە کە کاتێک من منداڵ بووم

I definitely walked through life like this.

بە دڵنیای من ئاوا دەڕۆیشتم بە ڕێدا لەم ژیانەدا

I think that we all did.

وابزانم هەمومان ئەوەمان کردووە

I would like to help others rediscover that wonder --

من ئەمەوێت یارمەتی کەسانی تر بەم بۆ دۆزینەوەی ئەو خۆشی یە

to want to engage with it, to want to learn,

لەتێکەڵ بوون لەگەڵی داو وە فێر بوون و

to want to share what they've learned,

what they've figured out to be true

So I'd like to close with this poem.

بۆیە من ئەمەوێت کۆتای بە قسەکانم بهێنم بەم هۆنراوەیە

"کاتێک کە بۆمبەکەیان کێشا بە هێرۆ شیمادا

When they bombed Hiroshima,

the explosion formed a mini-supernova,

تەقینەوەکەی بوو بە هۆی دروست بوونی خۆرێکی بچوک

so every living animal, human or plant

بۆیە هەموو گیان دارو مرۆڤ و ڕوەکەکان

that received direct contact with the rays from that sun

کە بە شێوەیەکی ڕاستەو خۆ

ئەو تیشکەیان بەر کەوت کەلەو خۆرەوە هات

was instantly turned to ash.

هەر خێرا بوون بە خۆڵە مێشسەر تا سەری شارەکە و هەموو دانیشتوانەکانی

And what was left of the city soon followed.

وە ئەوەشی لە شارەکە مایەوە بە دوای ئەواندا

The long-lasting damage of nuclear radiation

بە ماوەیەکی درێژ خایەن زەرەکانی تیشکە ناوەکیەکە گرتیەوە

caused an entire city and its population

بووە هۆی ئەوەی کە سەرتا سەری شارەکە و هەموو دانیشتوانەکەی

to turn into powder.

ببن بە خۆڵەمێش

When I was born, my mom says I looked around the whole hospital room

کەلەدایک بووم دایکم وتی لە نەخۆشخانە سەیری چواردەوری ژورەکەت کردووە

هەر وەک ئەوەی بڵێم:ئەمە؟من پێشتر لێوە بووم؟

with a stare that said, "This? I've done this before."

She says I have old eyes.

دایکم پێی وتم ئەو کاتە چاوەکانت زۆر پڕ دیاربوون

When my Grandpa Genji died, I was only five years old,

کاتێک کە جینی باپیرم مرد تەمەنم تەنها پێنج ساڵان بوو

but I took my mom by the hand and told her,

بەڵام من دەستی دایکمم گرت و پێم وت

"Don't worry, he'll come back as a baby."

"دڵ تەنگ مەبە،ئەو وەک و منداڵێکی ساوای لێ دێت و ئەگەڕێتەوە

And yet, for someone who's apparently done this already,

لەگەڵ ئەوەشی دا،هەر وەک و پێشتر یەکێک ئەمەی کردبێت

I still haven't figured anything out yet.

تا ئێستا بە تەواوەتی ڕاستی ئەوەم بۆ دەر نەکەوتووە

My knees still buckle every time I get on a stage.

ئەژنۆکانم ئێستاش ئەلەرزن هەر کاتێک ویستم بەرە و تەختی شانۆ سەرکەوم

My self-confidence can be measured out

وە متمانە بە خۆ بوونم دەتوانرێت پێوانە بکرێت

in teaspoons mixed into my poetry,

بە ڕێژۆی کۆچکە چایەک کە تێکەڵ بە هۆنراوەکانم بووە

and it still always tastes funny in my mouth.

بەڵام هیشتا تامی لە دەمدا خۆشە

But in Hiroshima, some people were wiped clean away,

بەڵام لە هێرۆشیما ،زۆربەی خەڵک بەتەواوەتی لەناو چوون

leaving only a wristwatch or a diary page.

هیچ شتێکیان لێ نەمایەوە لە سەعاتێکی دەست،یان پەڕەیەکی یادگاری نەبێت

So no matter that I have inhibitions to fill all my pockets,

هەرچەندە ئارەزوی گرتنی ماتەمینم بۆ ئەو کارەساتە هیچ سوودی نابێت

بەڵام بەردەوام بووم لە هەوڵ دان

I keep trying,

hoping that one day I'll write a poem

I can be proud to let sit in a museum exhibit

as the only proof I existed.

My parents named me Sarah, which is a biblical name.

کا ناوێکە لە ئینجیلدا هەیە

In the original story, God told Sarah she could do something impossible, and --

لەچیرۆکە ڕاستیەکەدا،ئەفسانە بە سارای ووتبو کە شتێکی مەحاڵ بکات

بە پێکەنی

she laughed,

because the first Sarah,

لەبەر ئەوەی یەکەم سارا

she didn't know what to do with impossible.

نەیدەزانم مەحاڵ واتای چیە

And me?

وە من؟هەروەها منیش نازانم

Well, neither do I,

but I see the impossible every day.

بەڵام من هەموو ڕۆژێک مەحاڵ دەبینم

Impossible is trying to connect in this world,

مەحاڵە ئەوە کە پەیوەندی بکەیت بەم جیهانەوە

trying to hold onto others while things are blowing up around you,

هەوڵ بدەیت کە خۆت بە کەسانی ترەوە ببەستیتەوە کاتێک شتەکان نایەن بە دەستەوە

ئەوە بزانیت لە کاتێکدا قسە دەکەیت

knowing that while you're speaking,

they aren't just waiting for their turn to talk -- they hear you.

هەست بەوە بکەن کە هەستی پێ دەکەیت

They feel exactly what you feel

at the same time that you feel it.

وە لە هەمان کاتدا تۆش هەست بەوە بکەیت

It's what I strive for every time I open my mouth --

من هەموو کاتێک هەوڵی ئەوە دەدەم کاتێک دەمم دەکەمەوە

that impossible connection.

ئەو پەێوەندیە مەحاڵە

There's this piece of wall in Hiroshima

ئەم پارچە دیوارەی لێلە هێرۆشیما

that was completely burnt black by the radiation.

کە بە تەواوی ڕەش بۆتەوە و ئەونەسوتاوە بەهۆی تێکشکانەوە

بەڵام لە پلەی یەکەم دا کەسێک کە لێرە دانێستبوو

blocked the rays from hitting the stone.

ڕێی لە تیشکەکان گرتبوو کە بەر بەردەکە بکەوێت

تاکە شت ماوەتەوە ئێستا

The only thing left now

is a permanent shadow of positive light.

سێبەرێکی بەردەوامی ڕوناکیە

But that spring, there were new buds popping up from the earth.

بەڵام ئەو بەهارە،چەند چڵە گیایەکی نوێ سەریان دەرهێنابوو لە خاکەکەیەوە

کاتێک دەتبینم لەو خولەکەدا

من چیتر بەشێک نیم لە داهاتووت

I start quickly becoming part of your past.

because I don't know that much about it --

لەبەر ئەوەی زۆر نازانم دەربارەی

and I don't know that much about reincarnation either,

وە هەروەها ن ناشزانم دەربارەی زیندوبونەوە

بەڵام ئەگەر بتوانیت بمخەیت پێکەنین

but if you make me laugh hard enough,

هەندێ جار بیرم دەچێتەر لە چ سەدەیەکدام

sometimes I forget what century I'm in.

This isn't my first time here. This isn't my last time here.

ئەمە یەکەم جارم نیە لێرە ،وە ئاخیر جاریشم نیە

ئەمە ئاخیر وشەکانم نیە کە دەیڵێم

These aren't the last words I'll share.

بەڵآم هەرچۆنێک بێت ،من هەوێی ئەوە دەدەم کە هەتا بتوانم
