Richard Turere: My invention that made peace with lions

This is where I live. I live in Kenya,

ኬንያ ውስጥ ነው የምኖረው

at the south parts of the Nairobi National Park.

ከናይሮቢ ብሄራዊ ፓርክ አጠገብ በደቡብ በኩል

Those are my dad's cows at the back,

ከበስተጀርባ ያሉት የአባቴ ላሞች ናቸው

and behind the cows,

ከላሞቹ በስተጀርባ...

that's the Nairobi National Park.

ይሄ የናይሮቢ ብሄራዊ ፓርክ ነው

Nairobi National Park is not fenced in the south widely,

የናይሮቢ ብሄራዊ ፓርክ በደቡብ በኩል አጥር የለውም

which means wild animals like zebras

ያ ማለት ልክ እንደ የሜዳ አህያ ያሉ እስስሳቶች

migrate out of the park freely.

ከፓርኩ በነጻነት ወጥተው ይመላለሳሉ

So predators like lions follow them,

ስለዚህ እንደ አንበሳ ያሉ አዳኝ እንስሳቶች ይከተሏቸዋል

and this is what they do.

እናም እንደዚህ ነው የሚያደርጉት

They kill our livestock.

ከብቶቻችንን ይገድሉብናል!

This is one of the cows which was killed at night,

ማታ ላይ ከተገደሉት ላሞች መካከል ይቺ አንዷ ናት

and I just woke up in the morning and I found it dead,

በጠዋት ስነሳ ሞቶ አገኘሁት

and I felt so bad,

መጥፎ ስሜት ነበር የተሰማኝ!

because it was the only bull we had.

ምክንያቱም ያለን ብቸኛ በሬ እሱ ነበር!

My community, the Maasai, we believe that

በማህበረሰባችን በማሳይዎች ዘንድ የሚታመን ነገር አለ

we came from heaven with all our animals and all the land

ከእንስሳቶቻችን ከመሬቱ ጋር ነው ከገነት የወረድነው

for herding them, and that's why we value them so much.

እነሱን ለማገድ ነው! ለዛም ነው ከፍ ያለ ስፍራ የምንሰጣቸው!

So I grew up hating lions so much.

አንበሶቹን እየጠላሁ ነበር ያደግኩት

The morans are the warriors

ሞራንኖች ጦረኞች ናቸው!

who protect our community and the livestock,

ማህበረሰባችንንና ከብቶቻችንን የሚጠብቁ እነሱ ናቸው

and they're also upset about this problem.

ይሄ ችግር እነሱንም አበሳጭቷቸው ነበር

So they kill the lions.

ስለሆነ አንበሶችን ገደሏቸው!

It's one of the six lions which were killed in Nairobi.

ይሄ ከተገደሉት ስድስት አንበሶች አንዱ ነው

And I think this is why the Nairobi National Park lions are few.

ለዛም ይመስለኛል በናይሮቢ ብሄራዊ ፓርክ የአንበሶች ቁጥር ያነሰው

So a boy, from six to nine years old, in my community

በማህበረሰባችን ከ6 እስከ 9 አመት የሆነ ልጅ

is responsible for his dad's cows,

የቤተሰቡን ከብቶች የመጠበቅ ሀላፊነት አለበት

and that's the same thing which happened to me.

የኔም ስራ ይሄው ነበር!

So I had to find a way of solving this problem.

ችግሩን መቅረፊያ መንገድ መፈለግ ነበረብኝ

And the first idea I got was to use fire,

መጀመሪያ የታየኝ ሀሳብ እሳት መጠቀም ነበር

because I thought lions were scared of fire.

ምክንያቱም ሳስበው አንበሶቹ እሳት ይፈራሉ

But I came to realize that that didn't really help,

ግን ቆይቶ ስገነዘብ አዋጪ አልነበረም

because it was even helping the lions

ለምን? ጭራሽ! አንበሶቹ...

to see through the cowshed.

ከአጥሩ አልፈው እንዲያዩ ያግዛቸዋል

So I didn't give up. I continued.

ግን ተስፋ አልቆረጥኩም ጥረት ማድረግ ቀጠልኩ!

And a second idea I got was

ሁለተኛ የመጣልኝ ሀሳብ...

to use a scarecrow.

ማስፈራሪያ ማቆም ነበር

I was trying to trick the lions

አንበሶቹን ለመሸወድ ነበር ጥረቴ

[into thinking] that I was standing near the cowshed.

ከከብቶቹ አጥር አጠገብ የቆምኩ እንዲመስላቸው

But lions are very clever. (Laughter)

ግን አንበሶቹ ብልጥ ነበሩ!

(ሳቅ)

They will come the first day and they see the scarecrow, and they go back,

በመጀመሪያው ቀን ማስፈራሪያውን አይተው ተመለሱ

but the second day, they'll come and they say,

በሁለተኛው ቀን መተው...

this thing is not moving here, it's always here. (Laughter)

"ይሄ ነገር አይንቀሳቀስም ሁሌ እንደቆመነው" ይባባላሉ

(ሳቅ)

So he jumps in and kills the animals.

ስለዚህ ይዘሉና ከብቶቹን ይድላሉ

So one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a torch,

አንድ ምሽት ላይ በከብቶቹ አጥር ዙሪያ ባትሪ ይዤ እየተራመድኩ ነበር

and that day, the lions didn't come.

በእለቱ አንበሶቹ ሳይመጡ ቀሩ

And I discovered that lions are afraid of a moving light.

እናም አንበሶች የሚንቀሳቀስ ብርሀን እንደሚፈሩ ተገለጸልኝ

So I had an idea.

እንድ ሀሳብ መጣልኝ!

Since I was a small boy,

ከልጅነቴ ጀምሮ...

I used to work in my room for the whole day,

ቀኑን ሙሉ ክፍሌ ውስጥ ሆኜ እሰራ ነበር

and I even took apart my mom's new radio,

ከእናቴ አዲስ ሬድዮ ላይ ሳይቀር እቃ እወስድ ነበር!

and that day she almost killed me,

ያን ቀን ልትገለኝ ነበር!

but I learned a lot about electronics. (Laughter)

ግን ያው ስለ ኤሌክትሮኒክስ ብዙ ነገር ተማርኩ (ሳቅ)

So I got an old car battery,

ያረጀ የመኪና ባትሪ አገኘው

an indicator box. It's a small device found in a motorcycle,

ጠቋሚ ሳጥን፣ ሞተር ሳይክል ላይ የሚገኝ ትንሽ መሳሪያ ነው

and it helps motorists when they want to turn right or left. It blinks.

ሞተር ነጂው ወደ ቀኝና ወደ ግራ መታጠፍ ሲፈልግ የሚረዳው ነው ብልጭ ድርግም ይላል

And I got a switch where I can switch on the lights, on and off.

ሌላ ማብሪና ማጥፊያ ነበረኝ

And that's a small torch from a broken flashlight.

ይሀ ደግሞ ከተሰበረ የእጅ ባትሪ የተገኘ ትንሽ አንፖል ነው

So I set up everything.

ስለዚህ ሁሉን ነገር አስተካከልኩ

As you can see, the solar panel charges the battery,

እንደምታዩት የጸሀይ ብርሀን መሰብሰቢያው ባትሪውን ሀይል ይሞላዋል

and the battery supplies the power

ባትሪው ደግሞ ለሳጥኗ ሀይል ይሰጣል

to the small indicator box. I call it a transformer.

ትራንስፎርመር ብዬ ነው ምጠራው

And the indicator box makes the lights flash.

ጠቋሚዋ ሳጥን ደግሞ መብራቱ ብልጭ ድርግም እንዲል ያደርጋል

As you can see, the bulbs face outside,

እንደምታዩት አንፖሎቹ ወደ ውጪ ነው የተሰቀሉት

because that's where the lions come from.

ምክንቱም አንበሶቹ በዛ በኩል ነው የሚመጡት

And that's how it looks to lions when they come at night.

በምሽት አንበሶቹ ሲመጡ የሚታያቸው እንደዚህ ነው

The lights flash and trick

መብራቱ ብልጭ ድርግም እያለ ይሸውዳቸዋል

the lions into thinking I was walking around the cowshed,

አንበሶቹ የሚያስቡት በላሞቹ አጥር ዙሪያ እየተራመድኩ እንደሆነ ነው

but I was sleeping in my bed.

እኔ ግን አልጋዬ ላይ ተኝቻለሁ!

(Laughter)

አመሰግናለሁ

So I set it up in my home two years ago,

ይሄን የሰራሁት ከሁለት አመት በፊት ነበር

and since then, we have never experienced any problem with lions.

ከዛን ጊዜ አንስቶ ከአንበሶቹ ጥቃት ደርሶብን አያውቅም

And my neighboring homes heard about this idea.

ጎረቤቶቼ ስለ ሀሳቡ ሰምተው ነበር

One of them was this grandmother.

አንዷ አያታችን ነበረች

She had a lot of her animals being killed by lions,

አንበሶቹ ብዙ ከብቶች ገለውባት ነበር

and she asked me if I could put the lights for her.

መብራቶቹን እንድ ገጥምላት ጠየቀችን

And I said, "Yes."

So I put the lights. You can see at the back, those are the lion lights.

እሺ አልኳት

መብራቱን ሰቀልኩላት! እነዛ ከጀርባ የምታዩት የአንበሶቹ ብራት ነው

Since now, I've set up seven homes around my community,

እስካሁን ድረስ በአካባቢዬ ላሉ ሰባት ቤቶች ሰርቼላቸዋለሁ

and they're really working.

እናም በደንብ እየሰሩ ነው

And my idea is also being used now all over Kenya

አሁን በመላው ኬንያ ሀሳቤን እየተጠቀሙበት ነው

for scaring other predators like hyenas, leopards,

ሌሎችንም እንደ ጅብ አቦሸማኔ ለመሰሉ አውሬዎች ማስፈራሪያነት እየዋለ ነው

and it's also being used

በተጨማሪ

to scare elephants away from people's farms.

ዝሆኖችን ከእርሻ ለማራቅ እየተጠቀሙበት ነው

Because of this invention, I was lucky to get a scholarship

በዚህ ፈጠራ ምክንያት ነጻ የትምህርት እድል ለማግኘት ችያለሁ

in one of the best schools in Kenya,

በኬንያ ምርጥ ከሚባሉት ትምህርት ቤቶች አንዱ

Brookhouse International School,

ብሩክሀውስ አለማቀፍ ትምህርት ቤት

and I'm really excited about this.

በዚህ በጣም ከፍተኛ ጉጉት አድሮብኛል

My new school now is coming in and helping

በአዲሱ ትምህርት ቤቴ በኩል እርዳታ እያደረጉ ነው

by fundraising and creating an awareness.

ገቢ በማሰባሰብና ግንዛቤ በመፍጠር

I even took my friends back to my community,

ጓደኞቼን ሳይቀር ወደ ቤት ይዣቸው መጣሁ

and we're installing the lights to the homes

በየቤቱ መብራቱን እየተከልን ነው

which don't have [any], and I'm teaching them how to put them.

እንዴት እንደሚሰራ እያስተማርኳቸው ነው

So one year ago, I was just a boy in the savanna grassland

እንግዲህ ከአመት በፊት በሳቫና ግራስ ላንድ የሚኖር ተራ ልጅ ነበርኩ

herding my father's cows,

የአባቴን ላሞች እያገድኩ

and I used to see planes flying over,

ያኔ አውሮፕላን ሲያልፍ አይነበር

and I told myself that one day, I'll be there inside.

እናም ለራሴ አንድ ነገር እል ነበር አንድ ቀን ውስጡ ገባለሁ

And here I am today.

ይሄው ዛሬ

I got a chance to come by plane for my first time for TED.

ለመጀመሪ ጊዜ ወደ ቴድ በአውሮፕላን መጣሁ

So my big dream is to become an aircraft engineer and pilot when I grow up.

አሁን ትልቁ ህልሜ ሳድግ የበረራ ኢንጅነርና ፓይለት መሆን ነው

I used to hate lions, but now because my invention

አንበሶቹን እጠላቸው ነበር ግን አሁን በፈጠራዬ ሰበብ

is saving my father's cows and the lions,

የአባቶቼ ላሞችና አንበሶቹን ማትረፍ ችያለሁ

we are able to stay with the lions without any conflict.

ያለምንም ችግር ከአንበሶቹ ጋር መኖር ችለናል

Ashê olên. It means in my language, thank you very much.

አሼዎ ኦሌኦን! በቋንቋዬ አመሰግናለሁ ማለት ነው

CA: You're working on other electrical inventions.

What's the next one on your list?

ቀጣይ ነገር ምንድነው?

RT: My next invention is,

ቀጣዩ ፈጠራዬ

I want to make an electric fence.CA: Electric fence?

የኤሌክትሪክ አጥር መስራት ነው

የኤሌክትሪክ አጥር?

RT: But I know electric fences are already invented,

የኤሌክትሪክ አጥር እንደ ተፈጠረ አውቃለሁ

but I want to make mine.

የራሴን የተለየ መፍጠር ነው ምፈልገው

(Laughter)

(ሳቅ)

CA: You already tried it once, right, and you --RT: I tried it before,

እስካሁን መቼም አንዴ ሞክረኀል አይደል!

በፊት ሞክሬ ነበር

but I stopped because it gave me a shock. (Laughter)

ግን ስለነዘረኝ ተውኩት

CA: In the trenches. Richard Turere, you are something else.
