ዛሬ ንግግሬን

by sharing a poem

ግጥም በማንበብ እጀምራለሁ

written by my friend from Malawi,

ማላዊ ከምትገኝ ጓደኛዬ የተጻፈ ነው

Eileen Piri.

አይሊን ፒይሪ ትባላለች

Eileen is only 13 years old,

አይሊን ፒይሪ የ13 አመት ልጅ ነች

but when we were going through the collection of poetry that we wrote,

ጽፈናቸው ከነበር የግጥም ስብስቦች መካከል ስፈልግ

I found her poem so interesting,

የሷን አስደናቂ ግጥም አገኘሁ

so motivating.

በጣም ያነሳሳል!

So I'll read it to you.

ስለዚህ እሱን አነብላቹሀለው

She entitled her poem "I'll Marry When I Want."

ለግጥሙ የሰጠችው አርዕስ "ስፈልግ ነው የማገባው" ይላል

(Laughter)

"I'll marry when I want.

ስፈልግ ነው የማገባው!

My mother can't force me to marry.

እናቴ ልታስገድደኝ አትችልም እንዳገባ

My father cannot force me to marry.

አባቴ ሊያስገድደኝ አይችልም እንዳገባ

My uncle, my aunt,

አጎት ፣ አክስቶቼ

my brother or sister,

ወንድም ፣ እህቶቼ

cannot force me to marry.

ሊያስገድዱኝ አይችሉም እንዳገባ

No one in the world

ማንም በዚች አለም

can force me to marry.

አይችልም ተገድጄ እንዳገባ

I'll marry when I want.

ስፈልግ ነው የማገባው!

Even if you beat me,

ብትደበድቡኝም

even if you chase me away,

ብታባሩኝ እንኳን

even if you do anything bad to me,

ምንም ብታደርጉ መጥፎ

I'll marry when I want.

ስፈልግ ነው የማገባው!

I'll marry when I want,

but not before I am well educated,

ሳልጨርስ አይደለም ሳልማር ትምህርቴን

and not before I am all grown up.

ሳይደረስ አይደለም ሳላድግ በእድሜ

I'll marry when I want."

ስፈልግ ነው የማገባው!

This poem might seem odd,

ይህ ግጥም ግር ሊላቹ ይችላል

written by a 13-year-old girl,

በ13 አመት ልጅ መጻፉ

but where I and Eileen come from,

ግን እኔና አይሊን ከመጣንበት አካባቢ

this poem, which I have just read to you,

ይሄ ግጥም

is a warrior's cry.

የአርበኞች ጥሪ ነው!

I am from Malawi.

እኔ ከማላዊ ነው የመጣሁት

Malawi is one of the poorest countries,

ማላዊ ደሀ ከሚባሉ አገራት አንዷነች

very poor,

በጣም ደሀ!

where gender equality is questionable.

የጾታ እኩልነት አጠራጣሪ የሆነባት አገር

Growing up in that country,

በዛች አገር በማደጌ

I couldn't make my own choices in life.

በህይወቴ ውስጥ የራሴን ምርጫ ማድረግ አልችልም

I couldn't even explore

በህይወት የማንነት እድሎችን እንኳን...

personal opportunities in life.

መመርመር አልችልም

I will tell you a story

አንድ ታሪክ ልንገራችሁ

of two different girls,

ስለ ሁለት የተለያዩ ልጃገረዶች ነው

two beautiful girls.

ስለ ሁለት ውብ ልጃገረዶች

These girls grew up

እነዚህ ልጆች

under the same roof.

በአንድ ጣራ ስር አብረው ነው ያደጉት

They were eating the same food.

አንድ አይነት ምግብ እየበሉ

Sometimes, they would share clothes,

አንዳንዴ አንድ ልብስ እየተጋሩ

and even shoes.

ጫማ አንኳን ሳይቀር

But their lives ended up differently,

ግን የህይወት ጉዟቸው የተለያየ ሆነ

in two different paths.

በሁለት የተለያዩ መንገዶች

The other girl is my little sister.

ሁለተኛዋ ልጅ ታናሽ እህቴ ናት

My little sister was only 11 years old

ታናሽ እህቴ 11 አመት ይሆናት ነበር

when she got pregnant.

ባረገዘችበት ወቅት

It's a hurtful thing.

በጣም የሚያሳምም ነገር ነው!

Not only did it hurt her, even me.

እሷ ብቻ አይደለችም እኔም ተጎድቻለሁ

I was going through a hard time as well.

የጭንቅ ጊዜ ነበር ያሳለፍኩት

As it is in my culture,

በባህላችን

once you reach puberty stage,

ለአቅመ ሄዋን በደረስን ጊዜ

you are supposed to go to initiation camps.

ወደ ልምምድ ካምፕ መሄድ ይኖርብናል

In these initiation camps,

በነዚህ ካምፖች

you are taught how to sexually please a man.

ወንድን በጻታ ግንኙነት እንደምታስደስቱ ትማራላቹ

There is this special day,

ልዩ የሆነ ቀን አለ

which they call "Very Special Day"

"በጣም ልዩ ቀን" ብለው የሚጠሩት

where a man who is hired by the community

በማህበረሰቡ የተቀጠረ ወንድ

comes to the camp

ወደ ካምፑ ይመጣና

and sleeps with the little girls.

ከሴት ህጻናቱ ጋር እንዲተኛ ይደረጋል

Imagine the trauma that these young girls

አስቡት እስቲ! እነዚህ ሴት ህጻናት ያለባቸውን ስቃይ

go through every day.

በየቀኑ!

Most girls end up pregnant.

አብዛኞቹ ልጃገረዶች ያረግዛሉ!

They even contract HIV and AIDS

በኤችአይቪ ኤድስ ይያዛሉ!

and other sexually transmitted diseases.

ሌሎች በጾታ ግንኙነት የሚመጡ በሽታዎች ጭምር

For my little sister, she ended up being pregnant.

ትንሷ እህቴ እርግዝና ነበር የገጠማት

Today, she's only 16 years old

አሁን 16 አመቷ ነው

and she has three children.

ሶስት ልጆች አሉዋት

Her first marriage did not survive,

የመጀመሪያ ትዳሯ አልሰመረም

nor did her second marriage.

ሁለተኛውም ቢሆን እንደዛው

On the other side, there is this girl.

በሌላ በኩል ደግሞ ይህቺ ልጅ አለች

She's amazing.

የምታስደንቅ ናት!

(Laughter)

(ሳቅ)

(Applause)

I call her amazing because she is.

አስደናቂ ነች ያልኩት ስለሆነች ነው!

She's very fabulous.

በጣም አስደማሚ ናት!

That girl is me. (Laughter)

ያቺ ልጅ እኔ ነኝ! (ሳቅ)

When I was 13 years old,

የ13 አመት ልጅ ሆኜ

I was told, you are grown up,

አድገሻል

you have now reached of age,

እድሜሽ ደርሷል

you're supposed to go to the initiation camp.

ወደ ልምምድ ካምፑ መሄድ አለብሽ ሲሉኝ ነበር

I was like, "What?

"ምን?" ነበር የኔ መልስ

I'm not going to go to the initiation camps."

ወደ ልምምድ ካምፑ አልሄድም አልኩ

You know what the women said to me?

አንድ ሴት ምን እንዳለችኝ ታውቃላቹ?

"You are a stupid girl. Stubborn.

ደደብ ልጅ ነሽ! ምንም የማይገባሽ!

You do not respect the traditions of our society, of our community."

የማህበረሰባችንን፣ የእኛን ባህል አታከብሪም!

I said no because I knew where I was going.

እንቢ! ያልኩት የት እንደምሄድ ስለማውቅ ነው

I knew what I wanted in life.

በህይወቴ ምን አንደምፈልግ ስለማውቅ ነው

I had a lot of dreams as a young girl.

በልጅነት ብዙ ህልሞች ነበሩኝ

I wanted to get well educated,

በደንብ መማር እፈልግ ነበር

to find a decent job in the future.

ወደፊት ጥሩ ስራ አንዲኖረኝ

I was imagining myself as a lawyer,

እራሴን ጠበቃ ሆኜ እስለው ነበር

seated on that big chair.

ትልቅ ወንበር ላይ ተቀምጬ

Those were the imaginations that

በሀሳብ የምስለው

were going through my mind every day.

በየቀኑ በአእምሮዬ የሚመላለሰው እሱ ነበር

And I knew that one day,

ደግሞ አውቅ ነበር አንድ ቀን

I would contribute something, a little something to my community.

የሆነ ነገር፣ የሆነ ትንሽ ነገር ለ ማህበረሰቤ እንደማበረክት

But every day after refusing,

ግን እንቢ ካልኩኝ በኋላ በየቀኑ

women would tell me,

ሴቶቹ

"Look at you, you're all grown up. Your little sister has a baby.

"እራስሽን ተመልከቺ እስቲ? ትልቅ ሆነሻል! እህትሽ አንኳን ልጅ አላት!

What about you?"

አንቺስ?" ይሉኛል

That was the music that I was hearing every day,

ይሄን ዘፈን ነበር በየቀኑ እሰማ የነበረው

and that is the music that girls hear every day

ይሄን ዘፈን ነበር በየቀኑ ልጆቹ ይሰሙ የነበረው

when they don't do something that the community needs them to do.

ምንም ሳያደርጉ ሲቀሩ ማህበረሰቡ እንዲሆኑ የሚፈልገው እሱን ነው

When I compared the two stories between me and my sister,

የኔንና የእህቴን ታሪክ ሳነጻጽረው

I said, "Why can't I do something?

ለራሴ "የሆነ ነገር ማድረግ አለብኝ?" አልኩ

Why can't I change something that has happened for a long time

አንድ ነገር መለወጥ ለምንድ ነው የማልችለው?

in our community?"

ያውም! ከጥንት ጀምሮ የነበረን ነገር

That was when I called other girls

በዛን ጊዜ ነው ሌሎቹን ልጆች የሰበሰብኳቸው

just like my sister, who have children,

ልክ እንደ እህቴ ልጆች ያላቸውን

who have been in class but they have forgotten how to read and write.

ይማሩ ነበር ግን ማንበብና መጻፍ ጠፍቶባቸዋል

I said, "Come on, we can remind each other

ኑና እርስ በራሳችን እንማማር አልኳቸው

how to read and write again,

ማንበብና መጻፍ እንደገና እንሞክር

how to hold the pen, how to read, to hold the book."

ብእር እንዴት እንደሚያዝ፣ እንዴት እንደሚነበብ፣ መጽሀፍ እንደሚያዝ

It was a great time I had with them.

በጣም ትልቅ ጊዜ ነበር ያሳለፍነው

Nor did I just learn a little about them,

ስለ እነርሱ ትንሽ አወኩኝ

but they were able to tell me their personal stories,

የግል ታሪካቸውን ያጫውቱኝ ነበር

what they were facing every day

በእናትነታቸው

as young mothers.

በየቀኑ ስለሚገጥማቸው ነገር

That was when I was like,

ያኔ ሀሳብ መጣልኝ

'Why can't we take all these things that are happening to us

እነዚህ በኛ ላይ የሚሆኑትን ነገሮች ይዘን

and present them and tell our mothers, our traditional leaders,

ለእናቶቻችን ለባህላዊ መሪዎቻችን ለምን አንነግራቸውም?

that these are the wrong things?"

እነዚህ ነገሮች ስህተት አንደሆኑ ለምን አናስረዳም?

It was a scary thing to do,

ለማድረግ የሚያስፈራ ነገር ነበር

because these traditional leaders,

ምክንያቱም ባህላዊ መሪዎቻችን

they are already accustomed to the things

አምነው የተቀበሉት ልማድ ነው

that have been there for ages.

ለዘመናት የነበረ ነገር ነው

A hard thing to change,

ለመቀየር የሚከብድ ነገር

but a good thing to try.

ግን ለመሞከር ጥሩ የሆነ

So we tried.

ስለዚህ ሞከርነው!

It was very hard, but we pushed.

በጣም ከባድ ነበር ግን ገፋንበት

And I'm here to say that in my community,

እናም አሁን በማህበረሰባችን

it was the first community after girls

የመጀመሪያዎቹ ሴቶች ነን

pushed so hard to our traditional leader,

መሪዎቻችንን ስንጫን

and our leader stood up for us and said no girl has to be married

እናም መሪዎቻችን ከጎናችን ቆሙው

before the age of 18.

ማንም ሴት 18 አመት ሳይሞላት ማግባት የለባትም አሉ

In my community,

በማህበረሰባችን

that was the first time a community,

ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ

they had to call the bylaws,

በህግ ደረጃ

the first bylaw that protected girls

የመጀመሪያው ሴት ልጆችን የሚከላከል ህግ

in our community.

ሆነ!

We did not stop there.

እዚህ ጋር አላቆምንም

We forged ahead.

ወደፊት ተራመድን

We were determined to fight for girls not just in my community,

በኛ ማህበረሰብ ብቻ ሳይሆን ለያንዳንዷ ሴት ህጻን መብት ለመዋጋት ቆረጥን

but even in other communities.

በሌላም ማህበረሰብ ቢሆን

When the child marriage bill was being presented in February,

የህጻናት የጋብቻ ህግ በቀረበበት ጊዜ

we were there at the Parliament house.

በአገሪቱ ፓርላማ ተገኝተን ነበር

Every day, when the members of Parliament were entering,

በየቀኑ የፓርላማ አባላቱ በሚገቡበት ሰአት

we were telling them, "Would you please support the bill?"

እባካችሁ ህጉን ደግፉ! እንላቸው ነበር

And we don't have much technology like here,

እዚህ አንዳለው አይነት ቴክኖሎጂ አልነበረንም

but we have our small phones.

ግን ትናንሽ ስልኮች ነበሩን

So we said, "Why can't we get their numbers and text them?"

ስለዚህ ቁጥራቸውን ፈልገን ለምን በጽሁፍ መልክት አንልክላቸውም? ተባባልን

So we did that. It was a good thing.

አደረግነው! ጥሩ ነገር ነበር!

(Applause)

So when the bill passed, we texted them back,

ህጉ ከጸደቀ በኋላ መልሰን በጽሁፍ መልክት ላክንላቸው

"Thank you for supporting the bill."

"ህጉን ስለደገፋቹ እናመሰግናለን"

(Laughter)

(ሳቅ)

And when the bill was signed by the president,

ፕሬዝዳንቱ ህጉን በፊርማው ሲያጸድቅ

making it into law, it was a plus.

ቋሚ ሆነ! ይሄ ተጨማሪ ድል ነበር

Now, in Malawi, 18 is the legal marriage age, from 15 to 18.

አሁን በማላዊ የጋብቻ እድሜ 18 አመት ነው ከ15 እስከ 18

(Applause)

It's a good thing to know that the bill passed,

የህጉ መጽደቅ በራሱ ጥሩ ነገር ነበር

but let me tell you this:

ግን አንድ ነገር ልንገራቹ

There are countries where 18 is the legal marriage age,

18 አመት የጋብቻ እድሜ የሆነባቸው አገሮች አሉ

but don't we hear cries of women and girls every day?

ግን በየቀኑ የሴቶች የህጻናት ለቅሶ እየሰማን አይደለም?

Every day, girls' lives are being wasted away.

በየቀኑ የሴት ህጻናቱ ህይወት ይባክናል

This is high time for leaders to honor their commitment.

ከመሪዎቻችን አሁን የሚያስፈልገው የገቡትን ቃል እንዲያከብሩ ነው

In honoring this commitment,

ቃል ማክበር ማለት

it means keeping girls' issues at heart every time.

የሴት ህጻናትን ጉዳይ ሁሌም ከልብ መያዝ ነው

We don't have to be subjected as second,

እንደ ሁለተኛ ደረጃ መታየት የለብንም

but they have to know that women, as we are in this room,

ማወቅ ያለባቸው ነገር! ሴቶች በዚህ ክፍል ውስጥ እንዳለነው

we are not just women, we are not just girls,

ሴት ብቻ! ልጆች ብቻ! አይደለንም!

we are extraordinary.

ከምንም ነገር በላይ ነን!

We can do more.

የተሻለ ማድረግ እንችላለን

And another thing for Malawi,

ስለ ማላዊ ሌላው ነገር

and not just Malawi but other countries:

በማላዊ ብቻ አይደለም በሌሎችም አገሮች

The laws which are there,

ያሉት ህጎች

you know how a law is not a law until it is enforced?

ህግ እስካልተፈጸመ ድረስ ህግ አይሆንም

The law which has just recently passed

በቅርብ ያጸደቅነው ህግ

and the laws that in other countries have been there,

በሌሎች አገራትም ያለው ህግ

they need to be publicized at the local level,

በየአካባቢው መሰራጨት አለበት

at the community level,

በየማህበረሰቡ

where girls' issues are very striking.

የሴት ህጻናት ጉዳይ አስቸጋሪ በሆነበት ሁሉ

Girls face issues, difficult issues, at the community level every day.

በየቀኑ በማህበረሰብ ደረጃ ሴት ህጻናት ከባድ ችግር ይጋረጥባቸዋል

So if these young girls know that there are laws that protect them,

ስለዚህ እነዚህ ሴት ህጻነት የሚጠብቃቸው ህግ አንዳለ ካወቁ

they will be able to stand up and defend themselves

ተነስተው እራሳቸውን መከላከል ይችላሉ

because they will know that there is a law that protects them.

ምክንቱም የሚጠብቃቸው ህግ እንዳለ ስለሚያውቁ ነው

And another thing I would say is that

ሌላ ማለት የምፈልገው

girls' voices and women's voices

የሴት ህጻናት፣ የሴቶች የትግል ድምጽ

are beautiful, they are there,

ውብ ነው! ሁሉም ጋር አለ

but we cannot do this alone.

ይሄንን ግን ብቻችንን ማድረግ አንችልም

Male advocates, they have to jump in,

ወንዶች ትግላችንን ሊቀላቀሉን

to step in and work together.

ከጎን ሆነው አብረን መስራት አለብን

It's a collective work.

የጋራ ሀላፊነት ነው!

What we need is what girls elsewhere need:

ለሴት ህጻናት የሚያስፈልገውን ሁሉ መሟላት አለበት

good education, and above all, not to marry whilst 11.

ጥሩ ትምህርት፣ ከሁሉም በላይ በ11 አመት አለመዳር

And furthermore,

በተጨማሪ

I know that together,

አንድ ላይ ከሆንን

we can transform the legal,

ህግን

the cultural and political framework

ባህላዊና ፖለቲካዊ ዳራን

that denies girls of their rights.

የሴት ህጻናትን መብት የሚነፍገውን መቀየር እንችላለን

I am standing here today

እዚህ ከፊታቹ በመሆን ዛሬ

and declaring that we can end child marriage in a generation.

ለትውልዶች ያለ እድሜ ጋብቻን ማስቆም እንደምንችል እነግራቹሀለው

This is the moment

በዚች ቅጽበት!

where a girl and a girl, and millions of girls worldwide,

ሴት ህጻናት ሚሊዮኖች በአለም ዙሪያ ያሉ ሁሉ

will be able to say,

ድምጻቸውን ከፍ አድርገው

"I will marry when I want."

"ስፈልግ ነው የማገባው!" ማለት መቻል አለባቸው!
